It is built at an altitude of 235 meters, at the bottom of the Barbaira valley, a tributary of the Nervia coming down from the ridge separating the valleys of Nervia and Roya. It is dominated by Monte Abellio (1015 m.) to the West, Monte Terca (1070 m.) to the North and Monte Morgi (820 m.) to the East. The precise site is a small steep promontory at the confluence of the Barbaira and the Rio d'Oggia.We are 6 kilometers upstream from Dolceacqua. The coast near Ventimiglia is only 14 km away and we are 55 km from Nice. Toponymy: "Rocchetta" means "small rock" or "small fortress, small citadel" and "Nervina" obviously derives from the name of the Nervia valley. Surrounded by mountains, Monte Abelio (1015m), Monte Terca (1070m) and Monte Morgi (870m). Its French twin locality is Sospel. They are located at the same level and at an equal distance (approximately 10 km) on each side of the border. Rocchetta means small rock or fortress, citadel.Nervina is derived from the name of Nervia. Old fortified town in the 12th century, it was called "Castrum Barbairre", it was destroyed by the Marquis of Dolceaqua (the same as that of the michettes).In the middle of the 16th century the castle of Monte Abelio controlled the Roya valley Rochetta is isolated and in a cul-de-sac, its defensive system is particular, access is allowed there thanks to two bridges from medieval times called "humpbacks".It is still inaccessible today except on foot and of course by Vespa!!! Die ersten dokumentarischen Informationen über Rocchetta Nervina stammen jedoch aus dem Jahr 1186, als in einer mittelalterlichen Handschrift und unter der Herrschaft der Grafen von Ventimiglia das Dorf Castrum Barbairae erwähnt wird, das nach Rio Barbaira benannt ist. In dem Dokument erfahren wir von einer Rebellion derselben Einwohner gegen den Herrn des Ortes, Enrichetto dei Conti di Ventimiglia, der sich zur Flucht gezwungen in sein Schloss flüchtete. Das Gebiet von Rocchettino, das bereits unter der Gerichtsbarkeit des Bezirks Saorgio stand, ging ab 1342 unter die Herrschaft der Dorias in die Markgrafschaft Dolceacqua über. In den dreißig Jahren von 1348 bis 1378 dominierten Repressalien, Brände und Überfälle das Dorf aufgrund der Konflikte zwischen dem Herzogtum Savoyen, den Doria und den Einwohnern von Rocchetta; Unter den wichtigen Ereignissen, die sich in der Grafschaft Rocchettina abspielten, ist die Verwüstung durch den "Tyrannen von Dolceacqua" Imperiale Doria im Jahr 1360 dokumentiert. From 1723 the territory of Rocchetta was included in the county of Nice and from 1729 in the province of Sospello. In 1732 the vassalage of Rocchetta Nervina passed to the Perrucca family.
