He’d commanded armies on the eastern frontier. He rigorously practiced his Christian faith, attending mass daily and praying the Divine Office. He married an English princess, Edith, granddaughter of Alfred the Great. During the coronation mass, Otto’s sword, crown and scepter were laid before the altar. The Archbishop of Cologne, Wikfried, poured holy oil on his head before Otto took up the symbols of his rule. But Otto's greatest challenge would come in 955 at the Battle of Lechfeld, the ultimate showdown between the East Francian Franks and the Magyars.
