00:00:00
artwork critiques Photoshop files and
00:00:02
reference sheets are all available on my
00:00:04
patreon well hello there guys and girls
00:00:06
my name's Mikey or welcome back to my
00:00:08
room it's time for another tutorial and
00:00:12
today I'm going to be showing you how to
00:00:14
use some very basic shapes in a simple
00:00:17
method to quickly draw younger and
00:00:19
smaller framed anime and manga girls now
00:00:23
this won't take too long as slimmer
00:00:25
framed and younger characters do tend to
00:00:27
have less curves to worry about building
00:00:29
up and you can keep your building blocks
00:00:31
much simpler because of that but seeing
00:00:34
as I am known for doing spicy fan art
00:00:36
from time to time it is worth mentioning
00:00:38
as a disclaimer but we do indeed want
00:00:40
our younger characters to be nicely
00:00:43
designed and visually appealing for our
00:00:45
own manga and anime at home despite
00:00:48
having less developed bodies but please
00:00:50
do not confuse that with trying to make
00:00:52
children look sexy that should be
00:00:54
obvious but you do have to kind of spell
00:00:56
things out sometimes on the Internet
00:00:58
so guys if you want to follow along then
00:01:01
just grab yourself a few sheets of super
00:01:03
simple printer paper like I have here
00:01:05
laid down together on top of each other
00:01:07
for a slightly better drawing surface
00:01:09
from a hard desk I have a super cheap
00:01:12
disposable mechanical pencil the
00:01:14
equivalent of a 2b pencil today a scrap
00:01:17
sheet of paper optional just to rest my
00:01:19
hand on so but I don't smudge and foul
00:01:21
up my own work as I go and because we're
00:01:24
going to be talking a bit more about the
00:01:26
physical dimensions of a child character
00:01:28
I've got a cheeky ruler this one today
00:01:30
is shatter resistant just in case that's
00:01:33
going to help measuring things out now
00:01:35
over time you will get very used to
00:01:37
actually understanding proportions
00:01:39
mostly just by eye so don't stress too
00:01:41
much about it but I thought it wouldn't
00:01:43
hurt if I just quickly go ahead and put
00:01:45
some very simple guidelines on sir
00:01:47
today's page now I'm going to measure 2
00:01:50
centimeters from the top and just draw a
00:01:52
very faint line across and again do not
00:01:54
worry too much your own selves at home
00:01:56
but this will just help is a very loose
00:01:57
guide and the reason I'm doing this is
00:02:00
because we're going to be talking about
00:02:01
head Heights now you might be familiar
00:02:03
that the most adult female characters
00:02:05
might range in people's designs from
00:02:07
being about 6 and a half maybe up to 8
00:02:10
head height stool which is absolutely
00:02:12
fine
00:02:13
but with younger characters versus
00:02:15
actually going to be a smaller number of
00:02:17
heads so to speak if it would fit in the
00:02:20
overall size of a character's body so
00:02:23
we're going to be working with
00:02:24
characters that are going to be about
00:02:25
five and a half head height stool today
00:02:27
in order to make them younger female
00:02:29
children and we'll use those basic
00:02:31
shapes to loosely map out the body so
00:02:34
I'm going to go ahead and just so that
00:02:36
it fits nicely honestly to paper I'm
00:02:37
just gonna count up three centimeters
00:02:39
six centimeters nine testing my maps
00:02:42
here 1215 and then I'm gonna go 16 and a
00:02:46
half so that we've got five and a half
00:02:49
head levels here and when it comes to
00:02:51
these character designs when you've got
00:02:53
this sort of scale you can kind of go
00:02:55
almost halfway about two and a half head
00:02:58
height tall very very loosely and again
00:03:01
these guidelines are just super lightly
00:03:04
here to help me draw more than one
00:03:08
character next to each other if they
00:03:09
believe the same proportions I'm gonna
00:03:11
very super lightly just like that count
00:03:14
down by two and a half head Heights and
00:03:16
split that off this will roughly be
00:03:18
where the hips over very bottom of the
00:03:20
bum line of our characters might sit but
00:03:23
other than that guys we're just gonna
00:03:24
dive straight in with some basic forms
00:03:26
so if we have a go of putting together a
00:03:29
very young adults sorry a very young
00:03:31
female anime or manga character
00:03:33
somewhere over on the left to begin with
00:03:35
I'm going to start with that basic
00:03:37
building block of the head I'm going to
00:03:39
go ahead and draw a circle which will
00:03:41
fill most but not all of that space and
00:03:43
I'm just going to build that up here I'm
00:03:45
going to work very roughly and very
00:03:47
quickly guys you might not get a super
00:03:50
perfect art today I do apologize but
00:03:52
it's mostly about just getting your
00:03:54
ideas around the basic building blocks
00:03:56
that we're using and I've got a sense
00:03:58
lines of abyss characters looking off to
00:03:59
the left and I'm going to sweep down
00:04:01
left from the cheek fair so that it's
00:04:04
level with bottom of the circle before
00:04:06
sweeping in safely towards the chin and
00:04:08
then because this head is on a tilt I'm
00:04:10
going to maybe just flesh it out a bit
00:04:11
before I sweep up to the side of the
00:04:14
head like so meaning for our brow line
00:04:16
might be somewhere here just like this
00:04:19
and I'll get a cheeky ear popping out
00:04:21
off the side somewhere around here now I
00:04:24
have done a
00:04:25
much longer tutorial guys talking about
00:04:28
the heads of characters how to map the
00:04:30
face at different angles and get that
00:04:31
looking good and we've sat there in a
00:04:33
lot of detail in the last one so there's
00:04:35
a link somewhere on screen up there all
00:04:37
about that but today we're going to be
00:04:39
going a bit quick a few guys a bit more
00:04:40
digestible looking at the bodies now
00:04:42
when I do the head of a character I like
00:04:45
to then just have a very light vague
00:04:46
center line and this just tells me about
00:04:49
the weight of the character as I draw
00:04:51
down I'm gonna make sure that we're not
00:04:53
too far to one side of the other of this
00:04:55
line so that the weight drops fairly
00:04:58
evenly down onto the floor we'll try to
00:04:59
keep the poses relatively interesting if
00:05:01
we can today and I'm going to just come
00:05:03
down a little bit for what will be the
00:05:05
neckline of this character and already
00:05:08
with our much younger characters our
00:05:10
children we're actually going very very
00:05:12
thin with the neck we're going very
00:05:13
underdeveloped with all the muscles and
00:05:16
curves overall but we are still going to
00:05:18
put in a cheeky line for the shoulders
00:05:20
somewhere around about here and you can
00:05:23
see I'm not making this very wide at all
00:05:25
and then another cheeky line around
00:05:27
about the hips level but it's also going
00:05:29
to do something similar again it's not
00:05:31
too wide on the children and you'll
00:05:33
notice that I've gone a little bit
00:05:34
uneven this shoulder lines a bit that
00:05:37
way and this hip line inversely is a
00:05:39
little bit that way and it's always nice
00:05:42
to have fees gone to the post or
00:05:44
essentially a contracting against each
00:05:46
other to give nice balance and smooth
00:05:48
form to your character designs obviously
00:05:50
we can go level and flat but that tends
00:05:53
to result in very flattered level
00:05:54
characters and sometimes it's nice to
00:05:56
keep it interesting so with my character
00:05:59
looking off to the left I'm going to
00:06:00
imagine a spine line that sweeps in a
00:06:03
little bit goes down past four C's into
00:06:05
the lumbers before sweeping back out a
00:06:07
little bit more and I'm going to be
00:06:09
using a very small oval shape to just
00:06:11
lightly like this describe this area not
00:06:15
too thick not too fat it's a bit like an
00:06:17
egg that hangs off the neck that's
00:06:19
vaguely going to be our chests own and
00:06:21
then another one which is sitting on its
00:06:23
side so to speak this is a much flatter
00:06:25
oval shape and this is going to be the
00:06:28
bucket area of the hips it curves around
00:06:30
the topside imagine this sort of rough
00:06:32
shape but it's very flat on the bottom
00:06:35
as I sweep that shape in like so and
00:06:38
those are our main two kind of guiding
00:06:40
zones here's our ribcage roughly and
00:06:41
here are our hips for the characters now
00:06:44
the waiver I like to kind of just
00:06:46
balance her out before I build in the
00:06:48
center is put some circles for the
00:06:50
shoulders so we're going to follow this
00:06:52
line across here and I'm going to put a
00:06:54
circle just on the far side there and I
00:06:57
get to bring a circle on the near side
00:06:59
here something like so obviously I'm
00:07:01
working much darker so that you guys can
00:07:03
see clearly but this would all be very
00:07:05
very light building blocks for me
00:07:06
normally and then I can sweep down from
00:07:09
the top of this towards the center line
00:07:11
which again is off to the left of his
00:07:12
character to be maybe off collar bones
00:07:15
maybe they sweep in there that helps me
00:07:17
understand the shape but I've got going
00:07:19
up for shoulders just inside of there
00:07:20
and I could follow this center line down
00:07:22
imagining for the ribs
00:07:24
and the shape of ribs stopped there with
00:07:26
her another kind of arching shape and
00:07:28
that they sweep down over the front to
00:07:31
mean the main tummy area of our
00:07:33
character you can imagine a belly
00:07:34
buttons gonna sit about there before
00:07:37
that sweeps right down to the middle of
00:07:38
the body section and I'm going to join
00:07:40
this by not accentuating the curves very
00:07:43
simple child's frame here so we're just
00:07:45
going to come down on this side and
00:07:47
pretty much just come in just to touch
00:07:49
before sweeping back out to the curve
00:07:52
there and then on this side because
00:07:54
we're seeing a bit more of a side of the
00:07:56
hips I will just come from the back of
00:07:58
this circle for the scapular in the
00:08:01
shoulder area and the back I'm gonna
00:08:03
sweep in a little bit but then I'm just
00:08:05
gonna gently curve out again and just
00:08:07
meet again in relatively straight lines
00:08:10
I'm thinking about back over across fat
00:08:13
of a hip so there's our main body area
00:08:16
guys and now I'm just going to be able
00:08:18
to design for right let's have one
00:08:20
straight leg coming right down towards
00:08:22
the center that's where it's going to be
00:08:24
hitting all that weight and that allows
00:08:27
me to think the next leg I'm gonna have
00:08:28
bent and maybe this cat is running or
00:08:30
kind of stepping along and I'm gonna
00:08:32
have that around about halfway down at
00:08:34
this bottom section I'll let the leg
00:08:36
drop to around about here but it's
00:08:39
probably gonna be swinging right back
00:08:40
off behind our character like so so
00:08:42
let's start with this full leg firstly
00:08:44
I'm gonna go ahead and have a nice
00:08:46
circle sitting above that half like
00:08:48
halfway line for a knee and I'm going to
00:08:51
from
00:08:52
here just sweep a fair line down here
00:08:55
and I'm just gonna let this line kind of
00:08:57
just travel all the way to the bottom
00:08:59
and I'm going to start out from this hip
00:09:01
here and I'm going to just let a relatively
00:09:03
straight line go all the way down here
00:09:05
as well I'm kind of making it point into
00:09:07
a pin this is just our rough guide but
00:09:09
also to help us understand we don't need
00:09:11
to worry too much about too much detail
00:09:13
so maybe I'm just going to have the leg
00:09:15
section relatively flat just a little
00:09:18
bit of curve at the front there before
00:09:20
it goes to the knee and then relatively
00:09:23
flat then straight again until I hit
00:09:25
this last little one half of a head
00:09:28
height section down here and on the
00:09:30
outside edge I'm going to just bring it
00:09:32
in as a curve just a touch in towards
00:09:34
our knee circle and then I'm going to
00:09:37
let it just sweep out again just for the
00:09:39
carves but not too much I'm not going to
00:09:42
wildly in and out of these shapes on
00:09:44
keeping the consistency of this leg size
00:09:47
relatively consistently tapered as we
00:09:50
make our way down then another circle
00:09:52
over here to be the knee of the other
00:09:54
leg so I'm just going to give that some
00:09:57
mass by sweeping down here you can of
00:09:59
course just imagine this whole section
00:10:01
as a single cone shape or just a couple
00:10:03
of cylinders together and then as I
00:10:05
follow that sweep back over here I'm
00:10:07
going to imagine a straight line is
00:10:08
under there to around about there and
00:10:10
that this kind of shape is also just
00:10:13
sweeping down into there and then we've
00:10:16
got the always difficult feet of our
00:10:18
characters I'll have these ones may be
00:10:20
wearing heels so I'm going to do the old
00:10:22
sweep downward curve for the top section
00:10:25
four foot then a cheeky circle that sits
00:10:28
underneath everything that's our heel
00:10:30
down there doing all the work taking
00:10:31
most of a weight and then the flattened
00:10:33
front area of the foot these are just
00:10:36
shapes that you get very used to putting
00:10:38
in as you kind of studied shoes as they
00:10:41
are in sorry feet as they are in shoes
00:10:43
over time so don't worry too much like
00:10:47
so and then over here I'm going to do
00:10:49
something very similar and going to
00:10:50
measurement we've got the heel of our
00:10:51
character just over there the sweep of
00:10:54
the foot again my disclaimer this isn't
00:10:56
going to be perfect something over here
00:10:57
and then let's just sweep out a little
00:10:59
bit to show the top of the foot section
00:11:02
there
00:11:03
and the heel of a shoe somewhere down
00:11:05
there and then maybe on this side we've
00:11:08
got this arm going down the front
00:11:10
section of the arm will drop to the
00:11:12
bottom length of the ribs so I'm going
00:11:14
to go down to about here just behind the
00:11:15
character and in imagine a hands coming
00:11:18
up somewhere like so and I'm going to
00:11:21
just make that relatively uniform and
00:11:23
relatively thick it does get a little
00:11:26
bit thinner towards for wrists end but
00:11:28
I'll highlight that on the other arm in
00:11:30
such a sector in just a second and I'm
00:11:32
gonna have a paddle of a hand and we're
00:11:34
gonna look slightly side onto this panel
00:11:36
where I'm just going to basically say
00:11:38
this is beside where we've got the
00:11:39
smaller fingers again keep your design
00:11:42
very simple if you try to over work the
00:11:43
hands on your simpler characters you're
00:11:45
just gonna give yourself a headache so
00:11:47
I'm just gonna curl in these fingers
00:11:49
very loosely have one finger point up in
00:11:52
a kind of bangbang situation and then
00:11:55
have a firm do something similar just
00:11:57
get that shape out of a way maybe we've
00:12:00
got an eye of this characters just
00:12:03
somewhere in here you can see the scale
00:12:06
of a head is super cute compared to the
00:12:08
size and overall scale of a body maybe
00:12:10
they're gonna be winking something like
00:12:13
that just to give you an idea of a
00:12:14
playfulness and then on this arm
00:12:16
starting from the circle but we've got
00:12:18
for our shoulder again I'm going to
00:12:19
maybe just pop down and out a little bit
00:12:22
more here and then maybe just pop
00:12:25
straight up there
00:12:26
and so again I'm just gonna get a circle
00:12:28
here where that joint is for our elbow
00:12:30
and that's actually just gonna be joined
00:12:31
up to make this a straight cylinder
00:12:34
situation nice and easy and then where
00:12:37
we go out for the hand another little
00:12:38
flattened circle there and I'm just
00:12:40
gonna join that up again just like this
00:12:42
and just like this and then this one is
00:12:45
gonna be waving so let's have a very
00:12:48
small paddle shape that's the center
00:12:51
part the hand I'm going to take off a
00:12:53
section right about here which is been
00:12:55
going to be for the thumb just like so
00:12:59
and then the rest of her fingers are
00:13:01
going to sprout out of that section so
00:13:02
let's draw a line to guide me to where
00:13:04
they're going and I'm just going to put
00:13:06
in four little nubbins basically one two
00:13:10
let's make the middle to hang out
00:13:11
together so it's two and free and then
00:13:15
smallest finger just off
00:13:16
there for four and then just a little
00:13:22
bit of shape in there just so you've got
00:13:23
that as a guide and basically just like
00:13:26
that we end ourselves up with a very
00:13:27
small framed character so what you can
00:13:30
do depending on how much they're
00:13:32
developing and how much they're growing
00:13:33
is you might just have a little bit of
00:13:35
bump in the chest again we're not
00:13:37
talking about making it too sexy but
00:13:38
there might just be a bit of boob shape
00:13:40
that's just going to create a much more
00:13:42
effeminate style for the character and
00:13:45
I'm working on the front centerline area
00:13:47
here I'm just creating slight sort of
00:13:50
bump shapes just there and just fair I'm
00:13:53
not trying to map out an entire rounded
00:13:55
curve or anything like that just a
00:13:57
little bit of bump to give it a bit of
00:13:58
gender and a bit of form and obviously
00:14:00
you've got just the type lines where the
00:14:02
hips themselves meet onto the main
00:14:04
section of the thighs and all of that
00:14:05
area okay great so basically what I'm
00:14:09
going to do is I'm going to use that
00:14:10
exact same method that I've just shown
00:14:12
you here in a little bit of time-lapse
00:14:14
now guys I'm going to just do that to
00:14:16
build up two more characters here in two
00:14:19
different poses firm up those lines and
00:14:21
shapes just so we've got lots of
00:14:23
examples for you guys to work with at
00:14:25
home and I'll see you right at the end
00:14:29
[Music]
00:15:25
[Applause]
00:15:26
[Music]
00:16:22
okay there guys
00:16:24
so welcome back and yeah let's take a
00:16:26
little bit of a look at what we've just
00:16:27
been up to so much like the actual
00:16:30
building block process I've been using
00:16:31
for this young anime character on the
00:16:33
left over here in the middle I've had
00:16:35
someone coming a bit more directly
00:16:37
towards us just so that we could get a
00:16:39
feel for these different curve and
00:16:40
shapes especially in the torso
00:16:42
and after I build up this basic shape
00:16:45
for the head and come down from the neck
00:16:47
you'll notice what I'm putting in a
00:16:48
light line which is actually kind of
00:16:51
indicating the curve of the spine and
00:16:53
that's a really great indicator to help
00:16:55
you understand what's going on for flow
00:16:57
of the torso I did it here where we kind
00:16:59
of swept down there and actually did it
00:17:01
here as well a little bit straight to
00:17:03
down the middle and I understood that
00:17:05
our character's body will be kind of
00:17:07
going slightly off to the right as she
00:17:09
sort of runs towards us and that meant
00:17:12
that the chest cavity area here I was
00:17:14
kind of just making that oval swing a
00:17:17
little bit more off in the right hand
00:17:19
directions at when towards the bottom
00:17:20
and obviously I've got the sweep of the
00:17:22
shoulders again contrapposto ever so
00:17:25
slightly balancing each other out with
00:17:27
the sweep of the hips and bringing
00:17:29
myself down again with these younger
00:17:31
characters and he's less defined shapes
00:17:33
it's a much easier to go ahead and start
00:17:36
getting the legs in I essentially once
00:17:38
again started off with a kind of a cone
00:17:40
shape I just made a triangle that swept
00:17:42
down to a slightly thinner point where
00:17:44
the foot is from almost for center of
00:17:46
the torso area and out from the hips
00:17:49
swinging all the way down and then half
00:17:51
way down there I just had a circle to
00:17:53
indicate the knee and then just kind of
00:17:55
put some bump for the outside of the
00:17:57
thigh and a little bit for the calf but
00:17:59
not much at all and then because his
00:18:02
legs coming to waters I just had to for
00:18:04
shorten things bring four knee up ever
00:18:06
so slightly and swing that leg up and
00:18:08
back so it gets lost behind us but you
00:18:10
can kind of imagine that if this surface
00:18:12
is curving like it's cylinder down here
00:18:16
making its way down there then this
00:18:18
surface is curving like a cylinder much
00:18:21
more like this who's now pointing
00:18:23
slightly towards us it's always nice to
00:18:25
get an understanding for mapping of your
00:18:27
surfaces it's going to help you guys
00:18:29
massively and then of course it seemed like a good
00:18:32
idea to also describe this character
00:18:34
from the back so it's just slide right
00:18:35
up over here and then again I've got
00:18:37
just a character facing towards us we've
00:18:39
got some sort of nice stated pose for
00:18:42
shoulders this time this line is even
00:18:44
more foreshortened even smaller and then
00:18:48
the hips again also pretty small as well
00:18:50
because we're seeing things relatively
00:18:52
slide on as a twist in a body here so I
00:18:54
had to think for myself right the spine
00:18:56
line is coming down here down the middle
00:18:59
and then hooking back around the lumbar
00:19:00
region as it meets into the bottom and
00:19:02
then again with the legs I've kept the
00:19:05
flattest edge running down the front of
00:19:07
the leg something that you can always do
00:19:08
with simple character designs if their
00:19:11
leg is nice and straight so this is the
00:19:13
triangle shape you can probably still
00:19:15
see here just like that and another
00:19:17
triangle or a pin shape just coming
00:19:19
straight down there and again just a bit
00:19:22
of bump for the outside bits of the back
00:19:25
of vo wait what do I want to call these
00:19:28
areas I've lost it for the muscle group
00:19:30
the muscle group of the back of the legs
00:19:31
here a good stretch you get and then
00:19:33
down over the carves and so on into the
00:19:35
feet and again if you're kind of doing
00:19:38
basic character designs a little bit the
00:19:40
cheat for I personally always do as I
00:19:42
tend to always give for character's
00:19:43
shoes and that is because it saves me
00:19:46
from having to draw feet and having to
00:19:48
draw for toes we will do some tutorials
00:19:51
in the future where we're going to take
00:19:52
a look more at how to do different faces
00:19:55
and different styles we will look at
00:19:57
more adult torsos what you do for a
00:19:59
curvy voluptuous character who's very
00:20:01
breasty and so on we'll look at the legs
00:20:03
in more details and eventually we'll
00:20:05
have to learn to draw the dreaded feet
00:20:07
as well but I really did in today's
00:20:09
tutorial just want to cover the basic
00:20:11
building block shapes that you can use
00:20:13
to draw a much younger and smaller
00:20:15
framed character just so that it goes
00:20:17
hand in hand really with the much cuter
00:20:19
younger face tutorial that we just had
00:20:22
as well so thank you very much for
00:20:24
following along guys of course you've
00:20:26
probably been noticing that there's some
