00:00:00
I'm Clint and welcome to my art
00:00:01
fundamental Series where in each episode
00:00:03
we're going to be taking a look at
00:00:04
different art fundamentals that I think
00:00:06
every artist should know basic anatomy
00:00:08
and proportions is the topic of this
00:00:10
particular episode of
00:00:18
[Music]
00:00:21
swatches you want to do some basic
00:00:23
anatomy in proportion practicing let's
00:00:26
touch on that and then we'll talk about
00:00:28
some resources going back here I talked
00:00:31
about sketching the skeleton say that
00:00:33
you have a character uh or reference
00:00:35
photo like this now this is borrowed
00:00:37
from face do if you are looking for some
00:00:40
good stock images to sketch poses from
00:00:45
go check out face stock she is one of
00:00:48
the most prolific stock photo posters
00:00:52
out on Deviant Art and they are really
00:00:54
high quality very sharp very colorful
00:00:57
she's not a sponsor or anything they're
00:00:59
trying to find a starting point that's a
00:01:00
good one so if you're want to practice
00:01:02
your skeleton and your basic sketching
00:01:05
don't draw what you actually see that is
00:01:07
don't draw the skirt don't draw the hair
00:01:09
you're doing this version of that you
00:01:13
know about here to here divide that in
00:01:17
half that would be right around the
00:01:18
crotch halfway up and then halfway up
00:01:22
there and that is going to give me my
00:01:24
head and then I know a third of the way
00:01:27
down is going to be the shoulders the
00:01:28
shoulders kind of uh have this sort of
00:01:31
thing going on right and then a third of
00:01:33
the way down from there is going to be
00:01:35
the waist yep that'd be right about
00:01:36
where she has it and then we're looking
00:01:39
at this shape which is basically a
00:01:40
spherical shape with a notch cut out
00:01:43
representing the rib cage I want to make
00:01:45
sure I have the action line that is this
00:01:48
there's an overall lean to this body
00:01:50
right so I want to get that in as my
00:01:53
guideline and I'm looking at how much
00:01:55
she's turned so this spherical shape is
00:01:58
doing that sort of thing you can put in
00:02:01
a guideline he has a Center Line there I
00:02:04
think that's probably a good idea so
00:02:06
here running down to the notch out right
00:02:10
about that it also has a lean back a
00:02:13
little
00:02:14
bit you know that way so the upper body
00:02:17
leans back on the top a little bit comes
00:02:19
out forwards on the bottom some so that
00:02:23
would give you the rib cage and then
00:02:26
here like he just shows the spine in
00:02:27
this case the spine would be right there
00:02:30
the action line is often where the spine
00:02:33
is now there's a lot of different ways
00:02:35
that you can block in the hips I'm not a
00:02:37
big fan of doing the discs so I don't
00:02:40
usually block it in that way um I'm a
00:02:43
little more uh a fan of of using this uh
00:02:47
kind of
00:02:49
a shape like that uh this is more of a
00:02:53
Bridgeman's shape it's a little more
00:02:56
rectangular or cubicle and I find that
00:02:59
that tells me more information uh that I
00:03:02
need better than those do and then what
00:03:04
you can do is then put in the line so it
00:03:07
indicating where the legs intersect and
00:03:10
her body is turning so she's you can
00:03:13
understand that she's doing this twist
00:03:14
you can't only see that line but she's
00:03:16
doing that twist so that leg is coming
00:03:19
forwards that's why that hip is rotating
00:03:22
towards us and that hip would be we
00:03:26
could see just a little bit at the top
00:03:28
of that I would think so there we go so
00:03:30
that gives me the hip and these are also
00:03:33
going in opposites I've mentioned that
00:03:35
before in some of my other videos most
00:03:37
of the
00:03:38
time the hips and the shoulders going
00:03:42
opposite angles that's something that
00:03:43
you should know that way the body keeps
00:03:46
balanced you see the same thing here if
00:03:48
this shoulder is high that means that
00:03:51
the opposite hip is high that is and
00:03:53
that ways the body can offset the weight
00:03:56
that creates this Dynamic one side often
00:03:59
has
00:04:00
a tight in Cut where the other side
00:04:03
often has a stretch so a simpler line on
00:04:08
this side and a cut on that side she's
00:04:11
stretching so you don't see that a lot
00:04:15
the Bones start up here and it's going
00:04:17
to follow that action line down shin has
00:04:21
a curve out uh depending on the angle
00:04:23
that you're viewing it right so bit of a
00:04:25
curve out down to the foot and you can
00:04:28
just represent that with your little
00:04:30
wedge shape at this
00:04:32
stage but then look at the for
00:04:35
shortening here right that one is
00:04:37
actually ending up higher now this arm
00:04:43
coming up elbow is right about the top
00:04:46
of the head and then up pretty much
00:04:49
straight from there then we have our
00:04:50
fist I me we could think of that as a
00:04:54
kind of a cube shape if you wanted to
00:04:56
this other arm we don't see a lot of it
00:04:58
but we imagine what's going on behind it
00:05:02
coming out here elbow coming down to the
00:05:04
end of the rib cage remember I mentioned
00:05:06
that so there we go that proves correct
00:05:09
and then that's coming to us a little
00:05:11
bit so we're getting some foreshortening
00:05:13
as it goes away which is why the upper
00:05:16
arm looks short compared to that one see
00:05:19
look at that length compared to this
00:05:21
length and then we have the hand right
00:05:25
here and with the head he just uses the
00:05:28
uh spherical shape a lot but uh let's
00:05:32
say that you want to do a more Cube
00:05:34
shape and you could put in a line for
00:05:37
basically the side of the head marking
00:05:39
the ear so we're kind of getting the
00:05:43
sphere shape and adding just a little
00:05:46
plar version to it and I often put in
00:05:51
just the curve of the eyes where the
00:05:54
eyes and eyebrows are so that is
00:05:56
something you can do uh with your
00:05:58
reference images and I would suggest
00:06:00
doing that and it gets you in the habit
00:06:02
of being able to sketch these very
00:06:04
quickly and if you do that enough then
00:06:06
you can sketch your own characters very
00:06:09
quickly starting with that you could
00:06:11
ditch this all together and turn it into
00:06:14
a completely different character like if
00:06:15
you want to turn this into a monster or
00:06:18
or a man whatever you can skin this into
00:06:21
something else and you know it'll be
00:06:24
okay because you started with a really
00:06:26
good accurate uh skeleton to begin all
00:06:30
right let's go on to the next item forms
00:06:34
you know you could have this as a
00:06:36
reference next to you and just doing
00:06:39
your own sketch and understanding how
00:06:42
these forms are working I'm not going to
00:06:44
do the whole thing but you can look at
00:06:46
the shapes he's using here the same sort
00:06:49
of shapes I did earlier the same
00:06:52
forms and sketch the forms of what's
00:06:55
going on and do that version of them
00:06:59
this one increase your understanding of
00:07:01
how to sketch a character uh without you
00:07:04
just relying on copying and that's a
00:07:08
common U failing that a lot of novice
00:07:11
artists make or you know I did the same
00:07:13
thing when I was learning how to draw I
00:07:15
copied what I saw line for line shade
00:07:19
for shade and it didn't increase my
00:07:21
understanding so what you have to do is
00:07:23
look beyond what the actual reference is
00:07:28
sketch the under L form and then turn it
00:07:32
into something else or just sketch the
00:07:34
form itself you just doing your studies
00:07:37
all right uh one other little practice
00:07:39
that you can do that's worth it head
00:07:41
rotations so you could do a bunch of
00:07:43
circles and this will serve as the
00:07:46
cranium of the heads that you're doing
00:07:49
and you can go in and start putting in
00:07:52
center lines and then you can put in the
00:07:55
ey line now if you want you could also
00:07:58
put these into plain versions and so
00:08:01
then you would have the halfway there
00:08:05
have the ear turn in on that and you
00:08:08
just want to do a lot of versions of
00:08:11
these if you have some time to spare and
00:08:14
you're trying to think of what to
00:08:15
practice this is one just do a bunch of
00:08:18
spheres throw in the uh the angles being
00:08:22
different on each one of them maybe some
00:08:24
of them are really you know looking way
00:08:26
downwards the face is super for
00:08:29
shortened uh or go find some references
00:08:33
and just do this version of the
00:08:35
references don't draw all the features
00:08:37
don't worry about the noses don't worry
00:08:38
about the clothes anything like that
00:08:40
just draw the head rotations of each one
00:08:43
of them last up couple of recommended
00:08:46
resources let's turn this on so here we
00:08:49
go these are some of things that I
00:08:50
mentioned throughout the video first up
00:08:53
bridgman's drawing from life is a
00:08:55
collection of sketches it doesn't teach
00:08:57
you how to draw there are some notes of
00:09:01
things to pay attention to but it's not
00:09:03
necessarily how to draw it doesn't take
00:09:05
you step by step uh it does use the
00:09:07
planar the very angled version I think
00:09:11
this is a really good one to start with
00:09:14
because it shows what forms pay
00:09:15
attention to and it goes through each
00:09:17
part of the body head face upper body
00:09:21
hands all of that stuff uh how to draw
00:09:23
Comics the Marvel way it does have some
00:09:26
anatomy in it but it is a comic Focus
00:09:29
and if you wanted to go in that
00:09:31
direction a nice little addition to your
00:09:33
art book library and it focuses on using
00:09:37
cylindrical forms a big name in this
00:09:40
genre is of course burn Hogarth Dynamic
00:09:43
figure drawing almost a must have uh he
00:09:47
does a lot with motion and for
00:09:49
shortening but he uses a lot more
00:09:51
complex shapes all these sort of
00:09:53
teardrop shapes and while they are very
00:09:57
realistic or more difficult to learn how
00:09:59
to draw so keep that in mind maybe not
00:10:01
your starter and lastly we have figured
00:10:04
drawing for all it's worth by Andrew
00:10:06
Lumis we looked at several of his stuff
00:10:08
I did a little sensor don't flag my
00:10:10
video I didn't need it flagged it uses
00:10:13
anatomy and illustration Focus he's
00:10:15
talking about what you should learn
00:10:17
about Anatomy so that you can create
00:10:20
illustrations from it because he was a
00:10:23
big time illustrator doing book covers
00:10:25
and book illustrations and doing a lot
00:10:28
of advertisements that sort of thing so
00:10:30
he's like how can we do this and turn it
00:10:32
into a syllable image uh he teaches
00:10:36
several different styles uh from
00:10:38
sketching the mannequin multiple
00:10:39
versions of the mannequin cylinders uh
00:10:42
planar uh it's very thorough uh links
00:10:45
are in the description for all of these
00:10:48
and I have uh recommended a lot of these
00:10:50
before but I have since uh got swatches
00:10:53
to be an affiliate with Amazon so if you
00:10:55
do decide to go purchase these I'd
00:10:57
appreciate it if you use the link below
00:11:00
because about 10% of the sale will go
00:11:02

00:11:05
that's always awesome okay um so
00:11:08
hopefully this gives you a really good
00:11:10
rundown of some things to know about
00:11:14
anatomy and proportions maybe some
00:11:16
things that you need to go learn what
00:11:18
was some of the things that you learned
00:11:22
in anatomy that made the biggest
00:11:24
difference to you I'm just curious give
00:11:26
me a comment below and if you want to
00:11:28
see more videos about Anatomy or
00:11:31
different parts of it how to render it
00:11:33
that you find difficult and you'd like
00:11:35
to see some input in let me know in the
00:11:37
description below I'd love to hear about
00:11:39
it there's more videos on the art
