00:00:00
I'm Clint and welcome to my art
00:00:01
fundamental Series where in each episode
00:00:03
we're going to be taking a look at
00:00:04
different art fundamentals that I think
00:00:06
every artist should know basic anatomy
00:00:08
and proportions is the topic of this
00:00:10
particular episode of
00:00:15
swatches what are the art fundamentals
00:00:17
and why should you know them well
00:00:19
they're a core set of skills and
00:00:21
knowledge that apply to every kind of
00:00:23
art and artist and that is why you need
00:00:26
to know them the fact is if you don't
00:00:28
learn these things it's going to hold
00:00:30
you back until you do so whether you
00:00:33
want to become a concept artist or do I
00:00:36
don't know traditional portrait painting
00:00:38
you got to know this stuff so what are
00:00:41
they shapes and forms shading
00:00:45
perspective basic anatomy and
00:00:47
proportions color theory composition
00:00:49
values and observation skills in this
00:00:53
episode we're going to be tackling a
00:00:54
topic of basic anatomy and proportions
00:00:56
so let's jump over into Photoshop and
00:00:58
take a look topic of learning to draw
00:01:01
and understand Anatomy might conjure up
00:01:03
some ideas of images like this and while
00:01:06
this is definitely Anatomy it is more
00:01:09
advanced and that's not what we're going
00:01:11
to be covering here should you learn
00:01:13
that sort of stuff yeah maybe at some
00:01:15
point but let's start with these body
00:01:18
proportions head proportions skeleton
00:01:20
and mannequin sketching those
00:01:22
understanding some of the forms of the
00:01:24
body as well as symmetry issues now
00:01:27
these are starting not ending points
00:01:29
point this is square one there is so
00:01:33
much more out there to learn than this
00:01:36
so no you don't need to leave a comment
00:01:38
and say Clen you forgot to mention how
00:01:41
to draw hands no that's not a
00:01:44
fundamental thing okay these are more
00:01:46
important I'm going to give you an
00:01:48
overview of what you should go learn I'm
00:01:51
not giving you all the information right
00:01:53
now this is a guide for your education
00:01:56
not the full education let's start with
00:02:00
the figure and its
00:02:02
proportions proportions really give the
00:02:05
realism to your characters and whether
00:02:08
you end up using a stylized version of
00:02:10
this or not doesn't matter the fact is
00:02:13
you should know what normal is so that
00:02:16
you know how to deviate from it and be
00:02:20
okay don't want to twist the rules if
00:02:22
you don't know what the rules are this
00:02:25
is borrowed from the book figure drawing
00:02:27
for all its worth from Andrew LUN
00:02:30
link is in the description if you want
00:02:32
to pick that up now he uses the E head
00:02:35
figure for a lot of his drawing a normal
00:02:38
man is somewhere around 7 and 1/2 heads
00:02:41
tall in proportions you measure
00:02:43
something usually by the head length so
00:02:47
you get the height of a
00:02:49
head and then you use that as a unit of
00:02:52
measurement in the same way that in
00:02:54
America we use inches a lot of other
00:02:56
places in the world we use centimeters
00:02:58
it's your unit of measure measurement so
00:03:00
the normal adult human would be
00:03:02
somewhere around the 7
00:03:05
and2 however 7 and 1/2 is a rather
00:03:08
difficult number to quickly sketch out
00:03:13
if you push it up to eight Head Links
00:03:16
then all of a sudden this ratio is much
00:03:19
easier to sketch you can just divide
00:03:22
things in halves and then quarters and
00:03:25
then eights you can push it further with
00:03:28
fashion designs often pushing 8 and a
00:03:30
half or heroic or even fashion again
00:03:33
over to nine Head Links uh you will see
00:03:36
in a lot of fashion design sketches of
00:03:39
models that they are exceptionally tall
00:03:42
and lengthy with small heads compared to
00:03:45
the overall height of the body connected
00:03:48
to that is the proportions of the body
00:03:51
as it ages so you can see certain things
00:03:55
don't change that much particularly the
00:03:57
head the head grows very little compared
00:04:00
to the overall height of the body where
00:04:02
the rest of the body the uh torso and
00:04:05
the legs grow a lot more the legs being
00:04:08
the most this is something worth looking
00:04:10
into and understanding let's go to
00:04:13
simple figure Block in this is also from
00:04:17
the lumus book and this shows how he
00:04:20
goes about blocking in a character
00:04:22
without really going into a lot of the
00:04:25
anatomy and you can see how it breaks
00:04:27
down here he has the overall height of
00:04:30
the character from top to bottom the
00:04:33
middle is right around the crotch the
00:04:35
top part is divided into thirs so one
00:04:39
third down is the shoulders another
00:04:42
third down is around the waist and
00:04:46
almost everything on the human body
00:04:49
falls on either a half measurement or a
00:04:54
third measurement and that makes it much
00:04:58
easier to sketch when you know these
00:05:00
things and when I'm talking about the
00:05:02
proportions here this is something you
00:05:05
should memorize you just need to take
00:05:08
the time and memorize and understand
00:05:12
what falls on what measurement in the
00:05:16
proportion and then that way you can
00:05:18
sketch characters without reference or
00:05:20
if you do have a reference it will make
00:05:22
the sketching from that reference even
00:05:24
faster so let's pull up over here and
00:05:26
take a look at some of his notes so we
00:05:29
have shoulders and the hips are at the
00:05:32
thirs 1/3 2/3 but then there's other
00:05:36
things that fall in Head Links so
00:05:39
obviously one head length down gives you
00:05:41
the chin cuz that's one head another
00:05:45
headlink down gives you the nipples
00:05:48
another headlink down gives you the navl
00:05:51
the belly button and then of course the
00:05:53
next head link gives you the crotch so
00:05:56
many of the real landmarks of the human
00:06:00
body fall on all of these major
00:06:03
measurements go memorize this stuff if
00:06:06
you want to sketch that how do you go
00:06:08
through that process so here this is
00:06:10
actually a pull from my character design
00:06:13
book I have characters designing and
00:06:14
drawing them I cover a little bit of
00:06:16
anatomy in that the link is in the
00:06:18
description if you want to go pick that
00:06:20
up say you want your character that tall
00:06:22
I Define the height of the character by
00:06:25
top and bottom divide in half divide it
00:06:28
in half again so you're getting
00:06:31
quarters and then divide the top
00:06:34
part here and then that would be your
00:06:37
one head length right and then you can
00:06:40
divide this into
00:06:42
thirs right so
00:06:45
1/3 1/3 and then I know that I then have
00:06:49
the shoulders and the waist and then I
00:06:53
have the nipples and then I have the
00:06:56
belly button if I want to divide that
00:06:58
again and then I have the bottom of the
00:07:00
knees all of my major ones just got
00:07:03
blocked in in a matter of seconds and
00:07:06
when you get used to doing that you can
00:07:08
just divide these up really fast boom
00:07:11
boom boom boom thirds from here right
00:07:15
about there and there there we go and
00:07:18
then all my major landmarks already
00:07:20
blocked in moving on E head figure
00:07:25
you're doing a triangle from the outside
00:07:28
of the shoulders down to the crotch now
00:07:31
these uh shapes change a little bit
00:07:34
depending on male and female uh go look
00:07:36
up the resources uh maybe I'll cover
00:07:38
that in another video there's all kinds
00:07:41
of little variations between male and
00:07:43
female I'm not going to cover that in
00:07:44
this particular episode but a triangle
00:07:48
gives you the upper body another
00:07:51
triangle going the other way gives you
00:07:55
the waist outline of the hips another
00:07:58
triangle down will give you the outside
00:08:01
of the thighs uh using an ellipse will
00:08:06
intersect with that triangle to then
00:08:09
give you the outside of the calves
00:08:11
coming down I don't show the space in
00:08:13
between there and then the arms come
00:08:15
down here the size of the rib cage is
00:08:18
right about there and then the elbows
00:08:20
stop at the bottom of the rib cage I
00:08:22
don't think I mentioned that earlier and
00:08:25
then the hand comes down and the wrist
00:08:27
is right about at the crotch level maybe
00:08:30
slightly above with the fingers ending
00:08:33
halfway down the thighs uh if you're
00:08:35
blogging in the upper body what you can
00:08:38
do is have your head length obviously
00:08:39
your head here and then you can run a
00:08:43
triangle down to the collar bone from
00:08:45
the outside with another triangle coming
00:08:48
from the shoulders essentially up to the
00:08:50
chin and back down now these are all
00:08:53
really useful if you're looking straight
00:08:57
on at the character this changes if the
00:09:00
character is being rotated to the side
00:09:03
uh you're going to have a different set
00:09:04
of you shapes that you're going to be
00:09:06
working with but if you're just doing
00:09:09
basic anatomy and you're sketching
00:09:11
characters from the front as a lot of
00:09:13
people do then you should know how to do
00:09:16
it uh kind of quick and dirty like this
00:09:19
all right next up
00:09:28
skeleton
