00:00:00
in the previous episodes of the series
00:00:02
we looked at 10 bushcraft knife skills
00:00:04
and 10 bushcraft axe skills both of
00:00:06
which can be seen by following the links
00:00:08
in the video description below
00:00:10
but now it's time to finish the trilogy
00:00:12
with 10 bushcraft skills in roughly 10
00:00:15
minutes
00:00:16
there are a few different types of saw
00:00:18
that i use when out in the woods
00:00:20
the saw that i choose to take with me
00:00:22
will depend on what tasks i'm doing and
00:00:24
at what time of year
00:00:26
if i'm building shelters i tend to take
00:00:28
a large folding pull saw
00:00:30
if it's winter camping then i often use
00:00:32
a folding bow saw
00:00:34
but if it's summertime or if i don't
00:00:36
need to be cutting large amounts of wood
00:00:38
then i will use a small folding saw
00:00:41
each have their benefits and drawbacks
00:00:43
without further ado let's learn some new
00:00:46
source skills
00:00:47
the first skill i'm going to cover will
00:00:49
involve the agawa folding bow saw
00:00:51
this is a great saw for use on canoe
00:00:53
trips and the folding design has been
00:00:55
really well thought through
00:00:57
there are times when you need to cut
00:00:58
short small diameter pieces of wood and
00:01:01
it can be really tricky to get any form
00:01:02
of good grip for the saw blade to bite
00:01:05
but if you have a bow saw you can lay a
00:01:08
small flexible stick over the frame and
00:01:10
place your feet on it to pin the saw
00:01:12
down
00:01:13
then you can pinch the top of the saw
00:01:14
between your knees to help keep the saw
00:01:16
blade straight
00:01:18
now all you need to do to cut wood fast
00:01:20
is to rub the log up and down against
00:01:22
the blade and it will cut in no time
00:01:25
this method is totally the opposite of
00:01:27
normal sawing as you are moving the wood
00:01:29
itself instead of the saw blade
00:01:31
doing it this way allows you to put much
00:01:33
more power into the cut and you can find
00:01:36
that it will cut wood faster than doing
00:01:37
it the conventional way of moving the
00:01:39
saw back and forth
00:01:41
it also means that you can cut much
00:01:42
shorter sections of wood that you would
00:01:44
not normally be able to do when pushing
00:01:46
the saw back and forth one of the main
00:01:48
problems when cutting wood out in the
00:01:50
forest is trying to keep the wood still
00:01:52
whilst cutting it
00:01:53
if you have a small diameter log or
00:01:55
stick that you need to cut
00:01:57
you can tuck them under your leg and
00:01:59
pinch them using the back of your knee
00:02:00
as a vise
00:02:02
now you can cut the wood whilst keeping
00:02:04
it still
00:02:05
and the saw blade is safely to the side
00:02:07
of your body so that when you finish the
00:02:09
cut there is no risk of the blade
00:02:11
following through and hitting your leg
00:02:13
again this method works well for small
00:02:16
diameter wood anything that is larger
00:02:18
will be difficult to keep locked under
00:02:20
your knee
00:02:21
but we will look at a different method
00:02:22
for larger logs later in the video
00:02:25
when making notches in wood for lashing
00:02:27
two pieces of wood flushed together i
00:02:29
would normally use a saw and then a
00:02:31
knife
00:02:32
however if all you have on you as a saw
00:02:35
you can still create a relatively smooth
00:02:37
square notch
00:02:38
using a small folding saw i make a
00:02:40
number of cuts in the wood all at the
00:02:43
same depth
00:02:44
then using the saw blade i make a small
00:02:47
twist to pry the cut open and the wood
00:02:49
will chip off
00:02:51
i always make sure i'm not twisting the
00:02:52
saw blade too hard and that i use the
00:02:55
thickest part of the blade nearest the
00:02:56
hinge as this is where you can produce
00:02:59
the most force
00:03:00
once all of the small pieces of wood
00:03:02
have been popped off you can then clean
00:03:04
up the notch by doing a number of pull
00:03:06
cuts to clear any protruding pieces and
00:03:08
square up the notch
00:03:11
a similar method you could do
00:03:13
is to make a small cut near the end of
00:03:14
the wood then twist the blade gently and
00:03:17
pop the small first piece off
00:03:21
then continue with the next cut and do
00:03:22
the same
00:03:24
and then the same with the next cut
00:03:25
after that
00:03:27
until you get to the required length of
00:03:28
your notch
00:03:30
by doing it this way each piece of wood
00:03:32
that you are removing is always on the
00:03:34
outside and therefore has much less
00:03:36
resistance when popping it off
00:03:38
once you've tidied up your notch you can
00:03:40
then place your sticks together and lash
00:03:43
both notches together to create a right
00:03:45
angle for things like door or window
00:03:47
frames another notch that i often use in
00:03:49
a lot of my shelter builds is a saddle
00:03:51
notch this involves creating a curved
00:03:53
notch that allows the log to sit on top
00:03:55
of another round log
00:03:57
to make this notch i use the same small
00:03:59
folding saw but this time i start with a
00:04:02
shallow cut on the end
00:04:03
then each cut after that i make slightly
00:04:05
deeper
00:04:06
with the deepest notch being in the
00:04:08
middle
00:04:09
once all of the cuts have been made a
00:04:11
quick twist of the saw blade removes the
00:04:13
wood pieces and gives me a rough saddle
00:04:15
shape
00:04:16
then it's just a case of doing a number
00:04:17
of pull cuts to tidy up the notch as
00:04:19
much as possible it will never be as
00:04:21
smooth or tidy as it would be doing it
00:04:23
with a bushcraft knife or a chisel but
00:04:25
it will be enough to make the notch sit
00:04:27
firmly on another log of a similar
00:04:29
diameter
00:04:30
this type of notch is great for rafters
00:04:32
in the roof of the shelter
00:04:34
in winter when conditions are constantly
00:04:36
wet finding dry wood to start fire can
00:04:38
be tricky
00:04:39
in this particular conifer forest the
00:04:41
dominant tree species is the scots pine
00:04:44
you can see that there are plenty of
00:04:45
protruding branches on each tree that
00:04:47
have been broken off or are simply not
00:04:49
able to grow into a full branch because
00:04:51
of the lack of light
00:04:52
there is usually a significant amount of
00:04:54
resin in these branches where the
00:04:56
shoulder of the branch meets the main
00:04:57
trunk of the tree
00:05:00
resin can be an excellent natural fire
00:05:01
lighting resource and given that these
00:05:03
branches are high up in the tree they
00:05:05
are often very dry all year round
00:05:07
but how do you get them down
00:05:09
if you have a small folding saw in your
00:05:11
pack you can lash it to a long stick
00:05:13
using an arbor knot
00:05:14
the arbor knot is simple to tie just
00:05:16
make one overhand knot leaving a small
00:05:19
tag end and then make another overhand
00:05:21
knot in front of it but don't pull it
00:05:23
tight then pass this around the stick
00:05:25
and handle of the saw and put the
00:05:27
working end through the overhand knot
00:05:29
ratchet down on the knot to pull it
00:05:31
tight
00:05:32
then do the same to the base of the saw
00:05:33
handle so that it stays straight and
00:05:35
doesn't wobble
00:05:36
now you have a makeshift extended pole
00:05:38
saw to reach those resinous branches
00:05:41
when cutting the branches is best not to
00:05:43
put any downward pressure on the saw
00:05:45
just move it back and forth and let the
00:05:47
saw do the work
00:05:48
the weight of the stick will help to
00:05:49
maintain pressure
00:05:51
you can see clearly from this shot that
00:05:53
part of the branch which meets the trunk
00:05:55
of the tree has red colouring to it this
00:05:57
is tree resin and it's highly flammable
00:05:59
if you make small shavings from it it
00:06:01
will take a spark from a ferro rod or a
00:06:03
lighter really easily
00:06:05
here is a dead standing pine tree a
00:06:07
great resource for shelter building
00:06:10
this pine tree has been dead a while it
00:06:12
has no canopy and it would never have
00:06:13
been able to grow much further due to
00:06:15
the other larger trees blocking sunlight
00:06:17
from reaching it
00:06:19
this one tree can have multiple uses
00:06:22
if you are in need of a temporary saw
00:06:24
vise you can cut the tree around waist
00:06:26
height
00:06:27
then cut a v-notch in it
00:06:29
you can then use this v-notch as a vise
00:06:31
to hold long pieces of wood steady when
00:06:34
sawing
00:06:35
it's very sturdy because it's still held
00:06:37
together by the root system of the tree
00:06:39
even though it's already dead
00:06:41
you can cut small pieces of wood on it
00:06:43
too
00:06:44
when you are finished sewing be sure to
00:06:46
make a final horizontal cut as low down
00:06:48
on the stump as possible
00:06:50
for some deciduous trees like hazel
00:06:52
willow and chestnut there may be a
00:06:54
chance of new tree growth from the stump
00:06:56
in a few years time
00:06:58
if you don't have a need to cut a tree
00:07:00
down but you are still in need of a vice
00:07:02
to keep wood still when sawing
00:07:04
you can use a stick with a y branch on
00:07:06
it and place another stick leaning
00:07:08
against this y branch to form a frame to
00:07:11
rest your log on
00:07:13
this form of saw vice works best with
00:07:15
long locks as the log you are cutting
00:07:17
actually acts as another leg for the saw
00:07:19
vice almost like a tripod and it makes
00:07:22
it much sturdier
00:07:23
this type of sawvise is great as you can
00:07:26
adjust the height to whatever is
00:07:27
comfortable for your needs
00:07:29
whether you're a small or a tall person
00:07:31
the height of the vise can be adjusted
00:07:33
to fit
00:07:34
you can even cut short lengths of log on
00:07:36
it
00:07:37
but the best part is that when you are
00:07:39
done you can simply separate the logs
00:07:41
from each other and they become portable
00:07:43
you can take them back to base camp or
00:07:45
move on to another spot
00:07:47
when cutting longer heavier logs the
00:07:49
wood will often split at the end of the
00:07:51
cut as the weight of the log puts too
00:07:53
much downward pressure on the cut as the
00:07:55
material removed gets thinner
00:07:57
normally when cutting firewood this
00:07:59
wouldn't matter
00:08:01
but if you are using the logs for making
00:08:02
a timber frame for a shelter or even if
00:08:05
you are doing diy at home and you are
00:08:07
using pre-cut lumber this tip will still
00:08:10
help
00:08:11
as you saw through the log when you get
00:08:13
about three quarters of the way through
00:08:15
take your saw blade out and make another
00:08:17
cut on the underside of the log
00:08:19
you might need to push and pull the saw
00:08:21
a number of times to make the undercut
00:08:23
once you've done this
00:08:25
go back to cutting the wood as normal
00:08:27
but towards the end of the cut as you
00:08:28
feel it about to split
00:08:30
increase the speed of your cutting
00:08:31
motion and the log should cut cleanly
00:08:34
with no split
00:08:35
it's not something that you would need
00:08:36
to do often when in the woods but when
00:08:38
using pre-cut lumber or when you want a
00:08:41
cut to look tidy
00:08:42
this is a great tip for making a clean
00:08:44
cut without the wood splitting off
00:08:47
when making a fire from a bow drill you
00:08:49
need to burn in the hole with the
00:08:50
spindle to begin with
00:08:52
and then you need to create a notch for
00:08:54
the wood dust to gather and for your
00:08:55
ember to be seated
00:08:57
you can use a knife to make this notch
00:08:59
but this can be time consuming
00:09:01
if you have a small folding saw
00:09:03
you can make two cups at angles towards
00:09:05
the burnt in hole
00:09:07
and then remove the material to make
00:09:08
your v-notch
00:09:10
it's much quicker and easier making the
00:09:12
notches this way
00:09:13
as generally folding saws are cross cut
00:09:15
saws and therefore they are designed to
00:09:18
cut across the grain of the wood
00:09:20
which makes it fast to remove the
00:09:21
material
00:09:22
to create the v-notch on a bow drill
00:09:25
you can use just about anything to
00:09:26
support wood when making a cut
00:09:29
if a branch is slightly off the floor
00:09:31
you can place your log or stick over
00:09:33
this and saw away
00:09:34
more often than not for any small
00:09:36
diameter wood that i'm cutting in the
00:09:38
forest i will just rest the stick or log
00:09:40
across my foot and use this as a support
00:09:43
i can raise or lower my foot to open the
00:09:45
cup and reduce the friction on the blade
00:09:47
to stop it pinching
00:09:49
it's simple
00:09:50
and unlike all the other vices and
00:09:52
supports i don't have to make the
00:09:53
support from the forest it's already
00:09:55
there with me and that's it
00:09:57
like tolkien's return of the king the
00:09:59
trilogy is complete 10x 10 knife and 10
00:10:03
saw skills in 10 minutes
00:10:05
well technically if you add them
00:10:06
together that would be 30 minutes but
00:10:08
either way there are 30 tips on the holy
00:10:11
trinity of bushfire tools
00:10:13
