Ben(B-Tek) Chung: How's everybody doing today?
00:00:06
It's a blessing to be here
00:00:08
to just be able to share with you guys a piece of inspiration that we have.
00:00:13
I just want to start off by asking: --I even ask myself, you know--
00:00:18
what is possible nowadays?
00:00:20
We were born in the 80s, '80s babies, grew up around that time,
00:00:25
everybody knows kind of what I am talking about.
00:00:27
Obviously, we got a little edge to us,
00:00:31
you know, grew up in the gang violence, seen the drug dealing,
00:00:37
the bad parts and also the good things.
00:00:41
Just because we are from these urban areas,
00:00:44
doesn't necessarily mean that it's all bad,
00:00:49
we just, for some reason, became more creative with what we had,
00:00:53
we became artists,
00:00:57
we became inspired.
00:01:01
So, obviously, myself, I was like the baby of the group.
00:01:04
Growing up around that time, we got to watch, I don't know
00:01:07
if you guys are familiar with the beach streets and the breaking,
00:01:11
and watching out hip-hop... --yeah, please, please, it's a good time!
00:01:17
(Applause)
00:01:19
We were born into this culture
00:01:21
and I didn't realize that we were born into this culture called hip-hop.
00:01:27
And for those of you who don't know,
00:01:30
hip-hop, yes, was birthed and created on the East Coast, in the Bronx,
00:01:35
(Applause)
00:01:37
but it created this ripple effect and it inspired the world.
00:01:41
And we are just one of the many that have been inspired by this movement,
00:01:47
and so that's what we started to do,
00:01:50
we didn't understand what there was out there for us
00:01:53
but we had to keep pushing,
00:01:55
so we became these 'garage kids,' that's what we were called.
00:01:58
We didn't have a dance studio, we didn't have hardwood floors,
00:02:01
we made it work.
00:02:03
And myself, being 10 years old, seeing these guys run around...
00:02:06
We would be at house parties and we would be in the garage,
00:02:10
dancing and fellowshiping...
00:02:13
Joe "Punkee" Larot: ...and oil stains on our shoes!
00:02:15
B.C.: ...on the carpets and things like that, oil stains and...
00:02:18
We used to wear helmets,
00:02:20
because we didn't have the hardwood floors,
00:02:23
we didn't ever dance in front of a mirror,
00:02:25
we didn't go to a performing art school,
00:02:26
I didn't even know those existed at the time.
00:02:29
And what's beautiful is that we had a piece of carpet,
00:02:34
it wasn't red and it wasn't round, but it was a lot dirtier than this,
00:02:38
(Laughter)
00:02:39
because a lot of our cars were leaking and things like that,
00:02:42
and we had to make it work.
00:02:45
But we were these garage kids in this garage,
00:02:49
labbing, creating, having an idea.
00:02:52
He has an idea, he has a philosophy, I have a concept
00:02:56
and we were in the garage and we tried to stay out of trouble.
00:03:02
Try to stay out of trouble but for the most part, obviously we did,
00:03:06
otherwise we wouldn't be here today.
00:03:10
We put this crew together, called The Jabbawockeez, in 2003,
00:03:15
so we are fastforwarding now.
00:03:18
It's a collective of different individuals from up and down California;
00:03:24
different ideas, different dreams, but also very similar.
00:03:30
One person that I would say, Gary Kendall --we call him Gee 1--
00:03:36
he was like our Yoda, and he really believed that...
00:03:41
J. L.: ...make it possible! B.C.:...we can.
00:03:44
He believed that we can take over the world,
00:03:48
he literally said that in a prayer, and I am here in a circle and he's like:
00:03:52
"You guys, you guys need to stop playing around,
00:03:55
I've been working so hard."
00:03:57
This guy, Gee, he used to be a backup dancer for Stevie B.,
00:04:00
he wanted to battle MC Hammer,
00:04:02
so he's a little bit older than myself but he really saw the talent that we had,
00:04:06
and he would just tell us we can take over the world, and we were like,
00:04:09
"That's pretty bold, Gee." (Laughter)
00:04:12
J. L.: I don't know about the world... B.C.: The world, Gee?! The world?
00:04:20
But I had to ride with them, I have to believe the things
00:04:24
that I don't necessarily see in front of me.
00:04:26
I have to sometimes lean on my brother to enlighten me,
00:04:31
I don't know everything, he doesn't know everything, none of us do.
00:04:34
So, ultimately, that's what we leaned on.
00:04:36
I'm like, "OK, Gee. Whatever you want to do. So, let's ride."
00:04:39
I love this, he knows that we love it.
00:04:44
We auditioned for "America's Got Talent," we got shut down in the second round,
00:04:48
J.L.: Lost, lost.
00:04:50
B.C.: We auditioned for ABDC,
00:04:53
Gary Kendall actually realized that he was sick,
00:04:56
passed away after we found out that we made the audition on ABDC.
00:05:01
We got on ABDC and rapped for Gee,
00:05:04
rapped for our history and our family and everybody that supported us,
00:05:08
and we won.
00:05:09
And from there on, it's been a blur.
00:05:12
We've been meeting everybody that we've been looking up to on TV,
00:05:16
our dreams have been coming true, it's alive, it's happening right now,
00:05:20
and that was impossible to us, that was impossible.
00:05:25
Now, we believe that it's possible,
00:05:27
and it would bring us a tremendous amount of joy,
00:05:31
for these underdog stories to be told to us one day,
00:05:35
so that we, together kin, make these things more probable.
00:05:40
From impossible to possible, to probable.
00:05:44
We are The Jabbawockeez, you guys, walk as one!
00:05:46
Thank you so much!
00:05:47
(Applause)
