in the 2024 X5 so I have spent quite a00:01:20
bit of seat time in 2023 X5 models those00:01:25
pre-lcis from 2018 to 2023 doing00:01:30
exchanges with other dealerships00:01:31
dropping cars off at clients houses00:01:33
things like that so I've driven the00:01:36
23x5s quite a bit beyond even just you00:01:40
know putting around our parking lot this00:01:42
is the first time I've driven a00:01:44
2024 model so we will see what00:01:48
differences there are if any as far as00:01:51
driving goes now of course you're seeing00:01:53
the big difference right away with the00:01:56
cockpit that is00:01:58
this iDrive 8 infotainment system00:02:00
otherwise the interior is relatively the00:02:04
same as a 2023 we do have that different00:02:07
shift lever down there and a redesigned00:02:10
dashboard but I drive 8 is the headline00:02:12
difference for 2024 model X5 so the one00:02:17
thing that you notice immediately when00:02:20
you're driving x5s or the 2024x5 is00:02:23
something that you'll notice when you00:02:24
drive all x5s that is that the seating00:02:26
position is really really nice so both00:02:29
arm rests fall at the exact same height00:02:31
the steering wheel is really nice and00:02:34
centered so that Center Line of the BMW00:02:36
rondelle lines up right with the center00:02:39
line of your chest so the ergonomics are00:02:42
really really good so one thing that I'm00:02:44
noticing and this is true of pre-lci x5s00:02:49
as well but the inputs specifically the00:02:52
steering as we make some small turns00:02:55
around town here is really really smooth00:02:57
so the this was true for lci's like I00:03:00
said but the X5 definitely feels like00:03:03
it's tuned to be a luxurious vehicle to00:03:06
drive a very comfortable car to drive00:03:08
every day and if you've ever had time in00:03:11
an X3 me saying that the X5 is much more00:03:15
comfortable and luxury oriented as far00:03:17
as the inputs go specifically the00:03:18
steering should give you an idea of what00:03:20
I mean so it's the same difference from00:03:22
3 Series to 5 series if you get in a 300:03:24
Series and then you immediately get into00:03:26
a 5 series you'll notice that the 500:03:27
series drives much smoother it's a lot00:03:30
more tuned for luxury and comfort00:03:32
whereas the 3 Series is tuned to be a00:03:34
bit sportier same difference is true00:03:35
with X3 to X5 so the X3 feels a little00:03:38
bit tighter feels a little bit more00:03:40
sporty as far as the driving Dynamics go00:03:43
and the X5 it sort of dials that back in00:03:46
favor of comfort and luxury00:03:50
as far as ride quality goes this part of00:03:53
our test drive route as you'll see in a00:03:56
moment00:03:57
is really nice for assessing the ride00:03:59
quality of the car it's probably it's00:04:01
one of the reasons why this road is on00:04:04
our test drive route because it's really00:04:06
bumpy and it gives clients a good idea00:04:09
of how the car will ride to make sure it00:04:10
suits their preferences the X5 straddles00:04:14
a line between being dampened like a00:04:17
sporty car and being debit like a luxury00:04:19
car really really nicely so it does ride00:04:22
relatively soft it doesn't crash or have00:04:27
any harshness over bumps it is00:04:28
definitely tuned like I said just like00:04:30
the steering is to be a bit more00:04:33
luxurious and you get that in the ride00:04:35
quality as well it soaks up bumps really00:04:38
nicely the chassis remains composed over00:04:41
bumps and Imperfections in the pavement00:04:43
so it rides nicely but when you decide00:04:47
to toss it into a corner a little bit00:04:49
more aggressively it will comply it'll00:04:52
play along with you if you would like it00:04:54
to you can definitely have some one with00:04:58
the car it's not so luxury like like the00:05:01
7 Series where the seven series is tuned00:05:03
almost exclusively on that Spectrum from00:05:05
Comfort to Performance towards Comfort00:05:07
the X5 is a little bit further towards00:05:10

um the00:05:12
chassis and the suspension is tuned in00:05:15
such a way that you can still have fun00:05:17
with it if that's what you want to do00:05:19
you can throw it into a corner you can00:05:21
drive a little bit more aggressively and00:05:23
still get some respectable performance00:05:25
and composure out of the car it's damp00:05:28
and stiff enough to make body roll00:05:30
relatively limited that's more in the00:05:33
springs than the dampers but the Springs00:05:36
are tuned in such a way to make body00:05:38

like I said pretty limited it's not a00:05:43
car a big lumbering SUV like we were00:05:46
used to in the early 2000s anything that00:05:49
was an SUV would have you know those00:05:52
rollover warnings even on the sun visor00:05:56
not anymore the X5 is00:05:59
really composed in Corners it remains00:06:02
relatively flat even for its size its00:06:05
height its higher center of gravity00:06:06
being an SUV it does not suffer from a00:06:09
lot of the detriments that older SUVs00:06:12
had so that is to say that it drives a00:06:15
little bit like a car it is a little bit00:06:17
more car-like in its driving experience00:06:20
than00:06:21
SUVs evolved even just one generation00:06:23
ago not necessarily the pre-lci X5 but00:06:26
uh certainly the generation before that00:06:30
and generations have proceeded uh that F00:06:33
chassis X5 so this is a nice little00:06:35
Highway on-ramp here I'm gonna throw the00:06:37
car in sport mode give it a light00:06:39
acceleration not gonna do anything crazy00:06:41
but just give you guys an idea of the00:06:42
sound of the performance we'll grab a00:06:44
downshift00:06:46
paddle shift at about 4000 RPMs so that00:06:50
was about half throttle uh revving it00:06:53
not even close to all the way out you00:06:54
know this is going to be a customer's00:06:56
car at one point so we don't want to do00:06:57
anything too crazy or break any of our00:07:00
local traffic laws but the X5 picks up00:07:03
really nicely this is an X drive 40i so00:07:05
375 horsepower out of a three liter00:07:08
turbocharged inline six the b-58 that00:07:11
everyone knows and loves00:07:12
drives really really well performs well00:07:14
in the X5 does a great job of getting00:07:16
this relatively large SUV up to speed00:07:18
pretty well it sounds pretty nice it has00:07:20
a very traditional BMW straight six00:07:23
sound to it it doesn't have the00:07:24
mechanical raspiness of like the s54 or00:07:28
even the n55 was a more recent engine00:07:30
that still had that sort of tone to it00:07:31
the b58 sort of loses that sounds a00:07:34
little bit more synthetic not as00:07:36
mechanical or raspy is what is the term00:07:38
that a lot of people like to use for the00:07:41
older BMW straight sixes but00:07:43
still sounds nice still has a very00:07:45
straight six noise to it and as you00:07:48
heard it sounds nice when you're running00:07:51
through the RPMs and accelerating a00:07:52
little bit we are still in sport mode we00:07:54
can try that out for a second hopefully00:07:55
you guys can see the heads-up display00:07:57
okay there on the screen that gives us a00:08:00
sort of pseudo tachometer00:08:03
uh throttle response is a little bit00:08:05
stiffer holds the gears a little longer00:08:07
you can see it'll let the car engine00:08:08
break it won't just immediately go into00:08:10
a coasting mode or a higher gear to let00:08:14
you sort of sail it will hold the lower00:08:17
gear and you can get some engine braking00:08:18
out of it which is nice that sport mode00:08:21
is tuned you know to be a little bit00:08:23
more aggressive it's it's definitely00:08:25
more aggressive than Comfort mode and00:08:27
that's what you want if you're going00:08:28
through the effort of putting the car in00:08:30
sport mode you want it to feel sporty so00:08:32
I'm not going to paddle shift I'll just00:08:33
lean into the gas a little bit you can00:08:35
see I will paddle shift because I don't00:08:37
want to rub it out too high you can see00:08:38
it picks up really really nicely not00:08:42
very much turbo lag at all feels very00:08:44
responsive so if you want to make a00:08:46
quick pass on the highway just jabbing00:08:48
your foot in a little bit it will00:08:50
downshift right away as you saw and pick00:08:54
up speed really really nicely okay uh00:08:57
you can see and it's still like the car00:09:00
is uh warning me that we're a little bit00:09:01
low on fuel but that's okay the b-58 is00:09:05
more than adequate to get this car up00:09:08
and moving perfectly fast the V8 options00:09:11
are really fun uh they sound really cool00:09:14
they're really powerful like really00:09:15
throw you back in your seat powerful but00:09:17
this six cylinder is more than enough00:09:20
for the past majority of folks that are00:09:22
going to be buying an X500:09:24
uh this is a nice little sweeping turn a00:09:27
highway off ramp here and I'm not00:09:28
pushing it very hard at all well below00:09:31
the limits of the car as we should be on00:09:33
the street00:09:34
but it feels really nice feels really00:09:37
composed the steering's direct you can00:09:38
point it where you want to go and it00:09:40
will listen and it will go which is00:09:42
really good no vagueness on Center00:09:44
um00:09:45
we can do the00:09:47
um not so professional but telling a00:09:51
steering tests where you just kind of00:09:52
wiggle the wheel to get a feel for Onsen00:09:55
or vagueness there's not very much of it00:09:57
in the X5 feels nice and direct00:10:01
so you can see as I make quick movements00:10:03
the car does actually move with the00:10:06
steering wheel feels very connected00:10:07
which is good this little section of00:10:09
Road here there's three manhole covers00:10:11
in a row right before our dealership I00:10:13
hit this every day on the way to work uh00:10:15
but we can go over those and you can see00:10:18
in my car which is a three series those00:10:21
bumps really toss your head around and00:10:23
the X5 it soaks us up really nicely00:10:26
it does a good job of not letting00:10:28
imperfections in the road that the right00:10:29
tires are experiencing translate to the00:10:32
entire body it sort of isolates the rest00:10:34
of the car from those movements which is00:10:36
really really nice00:10:38
but overall the X5 is just a really00:10:42
comfortable and usable car to drive00:10:45
every day it feels really nice to drive00:10:47
there's no jarring uh or uncomfortable00:10:50
or jerky movements in either the00:10:53
transmission the engine or the00:10:54
suspension00:10:55
it's all very smooth it's all very00:10:58
nicely tuned I hesitate to use the word00:11:01
serene that's something you usually00:11:03
reserve for like a Rolls-Royce still in00:11:06
the BMW corporate family but there is a00:11:10
sense of Serenity and sort of isolation00:11:12
you know as you heard we were going up00:11:14
up to 60 there on on the highway for a00:11:16
minute the wind noise is really Limited00:11:20
uh it doesn't it's there's no intrusive00:11:22
Road or tire noise you see that's a00:11:24
pretty big bump in a railroad track we00:11:25
hit there uh and it doesn't sound crashy00:11:28
or loud or obnoxious over the bumps uh00:11:31
it all just works together really nicely00:11:33
as an everyday vehicle as far as the00:11:37
physical comfort of things like the00:11:39
seats for example uh they are really00:11:41
nice and comfortable these seats are00:11:43
reasonably plush much softer BMW had a00:11:46
problem in the late 2000s and the early00:11:49
2010s with making their seats too hard00:11:52
they were just not very comfortable to00:11:55
sit in that problem has since been00:11:57
solved with even later fjazzy cars but00:11:59
most certainly all of the G chassis cars00:12:02
have adopted much softer and plusher00:12:06
seats which is really nice that's an00:12:07
important thing if you're sitting in the00:12:09
car a lot you want those seats to be00:12:11
comfortable and these ones are we do a00:12:13
quick00:12:14
turn around here00:12:16
turning radius is quite good for a full00:12:20
size or a mid-size I suppose in today's00:12:22
market SUV the X5 feels perfectly00:12:25
maneuverable in parking lots and those00:12:29
tighter areas the X7 has rear steer to00:12:32
sort of help mitigate that00:12:35
uh but the X5 doesn't really need it it00:12:37
has a perfectly reasonable turning00:12:40
radius00:12:54
so as you can see they're going over00:12:55
those bumps I've talked quite a bit00:12:58
about the suspension comfort in this00:13:02
little drive but it's just something00:13:04
that jumps out at me with the X5 it's00:13:07
dampened really nicely they've done a00:13:09
really nice job tuning the suspension to00:13:11
not totally forgo the ability to have00:13:14
fun and to be an athletic car if you00:13:17
toss it around it will work00:13:19
but you can go over those bumps and00:13:23
you know not be jostled around too00:13:25
aggressively the car still feels00:13:27
perfectly nice going over the imperfect00:13:31
roads that we find so often here in New00:13:33
Jersey00:13:34
so just sitting at a red light here you00:13:36
can see there's traffic going by00:13:38
um the usual happenings of a small Road00:13:44
a local Road like this traffic and00:13:45
whatnot and the X5 isolates that00:13:48
exterior noise quite nicely it does a00:13:51
good job of drowning out you can00:13:54
can we drive past these cars you can00:13:56
hear them going by certainly I won't say00:13:58
you can it's not quite on that level00:14:00
like that's again Rolls-Royce stuff00:14:02
where you can't hear cars driving by00:14:04
um but the X5 does a nice job of sort of00:14:06
masking their wind noise you get very00:14:07
little wind noise like I said from your00:14:10
own mirrors and whatnot in the car so00:14:12
that just adds to the sort of nice00:14:15
comfortable feel of the car00:14:18
but as we arrive back to our dealership00:14:21
here we'll give this school bus a00:14:24
right of way here00:14:26
and take some time to go through our00:14:29
final thoughts on the 2024x5 the big00:14:31
thing I want to talk about does it feel00:14:33
significantly different than the 202300:14:35
you know I'll start with just the ride00:14:37
quality no it feels just uh just the00:14:39
same as the 23x5 to me I think it rides00:14:42
and that's a great thing by the way00:14:43
that's a big compliment it rides just as00:14:46
nicely as the 2023 does it handles just00:14:48
as nicely as a 2023 does the engine does00:14:51
feel more potent with that bump in00:14:54
Horsepower you definitely feel that it00:14:57
does not go unnoticed specifically those00:14:59
sort of kick down situations on the00:15:01
highway where you're just going you know00:15:03
50 and you put your foot in it you give00:15:06
it a little bit of throttle for a pass00:15:08
this feels00:15:09
uh you know properly quick uh it feels00:15:13
like something that actually has some00:15:16
power to it so that's really nice the00:15:19
added horsepower is a great benefit uh00:15:22
the one thing that I've noticed that is00:15:23
a nice improvement over 2023s is the00:15:27
steering the 2023s did have a little bit00:15:30
of vagueness on Center if you were going00:15:31
down the highway you would sometimes00:15:33
have to adjust it a little bit00:15:36
to keep yourself in the lane going00:15:39
straight not a problem at all00:15:41
but the 2024 that's the the real thing I00:15:44
noticed has has remedied that the00:15:46
steering feels a little bit more direct00:15:48
a little bit easier to control so that's00:15:51
really nice the steering Precision has00:15:54
definitely been increased but as far as00:15:56
driving goes I'd say the two things00:15:58
you'll notice the most if you're coming00:15:59
out of a 23 are that engine the response00:16:02
and the power availability in the 202400:16:05
40i models is a big Improvement you'll00:16:08
notice that even more if you're coming00:16:09
out of a 45e going to a 50 e you got an00:16:11
even bigger power increase that the00:16:14
steering has definitely been improved so00:16:16
overall the X5 is a thoroughly00:16:19
redesigned car for 2024 we have all00:16:21
those nice exterior changes the new00:16:23
technology and interior the new engines00:16:26
all around00:16:27
but the Driving Experience is also00:16:31
improved in terms of steering an engine00:16:34
like I said and all the Fantastic things00:16:36
that we liked about the 23x5 are carried00:16:39
over the ride quality the chassis the00:16:42
playfulness if you want it can be a fun00:16:44
car to toss around or it's just a great00:16:46
everyday Cruiser on highways going to00:16:49
work taking the kids to school stuff00:16:50
