00:00:13
there are plenty of challenges to making
00:00:16
a building and Second Life we could talk
00:00:18
philosophy and workflow for probably an
00:00:21
hour but one thing that all creators
00:00:24
have to face along the way is physic
00:00:27
physics is probably one of the topics
00:00:29
that come up on the forums the most
00:00:31
often how can I get in my door it
00:00:35
doesn't do you much good to make a house
00:00:36
if you can't walk in the front door and
00:00:38
it's really not handy when you read
00:00:40
something on the floor and it turns out
00:00:42
to be in the middle of the room
00:00:44
so let's see how we can work around that
00:00:50
a house is a big project so rather than
00:00:53
do a step by step which we would
00:00:55
probably all get very tired of watching
00:00:58
I've taken some screenshots along the
00:01:01
way and my project that I was working on
00:01:03
yesterday and I will explain a little
00:01:04
bit about what's happening there to
00:01:07
start out with so let's look at the
00:01:09
simplest doorway you could possibly make
00:01:11
well pretty close anyway if you take
00:01:15
that simple doorway Dae file and you
00:01:18
upload it on the beta grid and then you
00:01:22
try to walk through the door you can't
00:01:26
you can analyze it you can use the
00:01:30
highest physics and you still can't get
00:01:32
through the door one thing that you
00:01:36
always need to remember and it's hard at
00:01:37
the beginning is that for a doorway or
00:01:40
even certain shapes of rooms to work
00:01:43
they have to be changed from convex hull
00:01:46
to prim in the features tab and then you
00:01:53
can walk through the door
00:02:01
this is a little shotgun house that I
00:02:04
was working on yesterday I have the
00:02:07
downstairs maid with the openings for
00:02:09
the windows and the door there's a stoop
00:02:11
in the front and a stoop in the back so
00:02:14
there are two doorways and five windows
00:02:17
now we don't have to worry about the
00:02:19
windows for physics because we aren't
00:02:20
going to be climbing through those
00:02:22
windows but we do need to make sure that
00:02:24
we can walk in through the front door
00:02:25
and walk out the back door or the other
00:02:28
way around now I could upload each wall
00:02:33
individually I could upload all the
00:02:36
walls together on the floor separate I
00:02:38
could make the stoop separate I could
00:02:40
put it all together that's all a choice
00:02:42
that a creator makes when they're making
00:02:44
their mesh I've decided on this model to
00:02:47
do all the walls together along with the
00:02:50
floor and the stoop and that's the
00:02:53
physics model we're going to be making
00:02:55
this is a cube style physics model and
00:02:58
we will be analyzing the mesh when we
00:03:00
upload there's another way to do it and
00:03:02
we're going to talk about that later
00:03:04
this method works both in second life
00:03:07
and on OpenSim and it's the one I've
00:03:09
been using forever yes this is the one
00:03:11
that we're going to use
00:03:14
in cue physics it's very important not
00:03:17
to have the pieces touch so you can see
00:03:19
on this close-up here that I have taken
00:03:21
cubes I've resized them I've sort of
00:03:23
done puzzle pieces around my house in
00:03:27
progress and I've made sure that I left
00:03:29
space in between each piece
00:03:34
while I was making these screenshots I
00:03:37
noted that there were lots of materials
00:03:40
listed on the right hand side notes and
00:03:42
spelling I also realized that I hadn't
00:03:47
explained to you that you can only have
00:03:48
8 materials per mesh intermesh now that
00:03:52
wasn't important when we were making a
00:03:53
picture frame or table or most furniture
00:03:57
but whether you get into houses you may
00:03:59
actually be using more than a few
00:04:01
materials if you try to use more than 8
00:04:04
materials the uploader and Second Life
00:04:07
but kind of decides on its own what to
00:04:10
do and divide your mesh for you into
00:04:12
pieces so you definitely don't get what
00:04:14
you want it's much better to plan ahead
00:04:17
and do it with only 8 material or divide
00:04:21
the mesh into pieces which is what I
00:04:23
usually do here's a close-up of the
00:04:26
stoop I put one on the back too of
00:04:29
course because there's a student back
00:04:30
there and I also added a floor the
00:04:34
ceiling for this is going to be part of
00:04:37
the roof piece when I get to that
00:04:40
once you have your mesh physics made you
00:04:44
need to apply location and rotation and
00:04:48
scale and transform the origin to the
00:04:53
geometry hopefully you've been doing
00:04:55
this on each and every mesh but it's
00:04:57
really important when you get to physics
00:04:59
model so don't forget to do that you
00:05:02
want to export each piece separately
00:05:04
they should be joined and each would be
00:05:06
a single mesh and it's important that
00:05:09
you have a hint in the file name so that
00:05:12
you'll know which is the physics model
00:05:13
and which is the regular house
00:05:27
over on the beta grid I uploaded the
00:05:29
house model and use the default settings
00:05:33
for the level of detail later I upped
00:05:36
the second LOD higher so that it would
00:05:38
have better viewing at a longer distance
00:05:40
in the physics tab I chose the physics
00:05:45
model that I made when you first attach
00:05:48
the physics model to your regular model
00:05:50
it will look yellow in the viewfinder
00:05:51
preview at least in firestorm after you
00:05:55
hit the analyze button in the physic AB
00:05:58
it will turn to pink and blue and so
00:06:02
you'll be able to tell the difference
00:06:05
once you read your building you're going
00:06:09
to need to change it to prim remember we
00:06:11
did that at the very beginning and then
00:06:13
you can test your building by seeing if
00:06:15
you can walk through the doors and out
00:06:17
the doors and if you can res a cube in
00:06:20
the floor it's also good depending on
00:06:23
the bill to walk around they make sure
00:06:25
that you can walk into the corners and
00:06:27
that you do get stopped and not walk
00:06:29
through something
00:06:37
you also have the option of using planes
00:06:39
for physics and then you do not analyze
00:06:42
here's a list of some of the differences
00:06:44
and I strongly encourage you to explore
00:06:47
both kinds and see which works better
00:06:49
for your bills also right now cube
00:06:55
physics is the physics that's needed in
00:06:57
some OpenSim grids and plane physics
00:07:00
will not work there's major issues there
00:07:02
that may be fixed in the future it may
00:07:05
not be fixed so we don't know so be sure
00:07:08
and test that if your happen to be in
00:07:10
opensim also right now
00:07:13
the firestorm viewer has not been able
00:07:15
to upload cube physics correctly
00:07:18
sometimes you get a warning it depends
00:07:20
on the viewer version that you're using
00:07:23
sometimes you don't it just doesn't work
00:07:25
so to get around that you can use the
00:07:28
livened viewer which does indeed work
00:07:30
for tube physics or you can use plane
00:07:33
physics if you do not want to use the
00:07:35
Lindon viewer those are your choices and
00:07:37
hopefully that will all be fixed in the
00:07:40
future
00:07:49
you
00:07:52
next I made the roof and the ceiling and
00:07:56
uploaded that separately with its own
00:07:58
physics model this physics model was
00:08:00
much simpler it was just made up of two
00:08:02
cubes
00:08:05
you can see that when I baked my
00:08:08
textures I had several different things
00:08:11
overlapping each other and you can do
00:08:13
that by designating different textures
00:08:15
that you'll be baking to I did that with
00:08:18
the roof to the roof all fit on one
00:08:21
piece except for the ceiling and it's on
00:08:24
another one to be added to later there's
00:08:27
lots of different ways you can bake and
00:08:29
you have to figure out your own best
00:08:31
method
00:08:40
you
00:08:48
after you get your build up in world and
00:08:51
all put together and looking good be
00:08:54
sure and test your LOD s again hopefully
00:08:56
you did that when you were uploading so
00:08:58
that you don't have to upload again but
00:09:00
it's always good when you're finished to
00:09:02
do it one more time next up we're going
00:09:05
to work on the trim for the corners and
00:09:09
the door
00:09:20
you

Description:

A look at how to get through that &%#@ doorway --- or better known as "you need to make a physics model, Dude!". Also a few other tips along the way.
