00:00:06
my next destination is Mexico where an
00:00:08
incredible geological Wonder lies deep
00:00:10
under the Earth in a
00:00:12
cave but this is no ordinary hole in the
00:00:17
ground this may be the most bizarre and
00:00:20
dangerous place on the planet I've been
00:00:23
to so far right now if we were to stay
00:00:25
in here we would absolutely die we would
00:00:28
die
00:00:51
[Music]
00:00:58
w
00:01:07
I've explored many of the world's great
00:01:12
caves I've been inside giant
00:01:15
ones insanely small
00:01:20
ones wet
00:01:22
ones and scary ones filled with
00:01:26
bats and potentially deadly viruses
00:01:32
but in Chihuahua Mexico 300 M below the
00:01:35
Earth's surface is a huge chamber that's
00:01:39
home to one of the most magnificent
00:01:40
geological discoveries of all
00:01:43
time these spectacular Crystal
00:01:46
formations have been inomed in water in
00:01:48
this cave for hundreds of thousands of
00:01:51
years until it's
00:01:55
AC but just preparing for this
00:01:57
Expedition has proven to be a challenge
00:01:59
in itself
00:02:00
self it has taken almost 2 years to get
00:02:03
permission to enter the Cave the
00:02:05
crystals are delicate and the conditions
00:02:08
are so dangerous that only a small
00:02:10
number of explorers have gained access
00:02:12
to this
00:02:14
site the reason it's so dangerous is
00:02:17
that directly below the cave is a pocket
00:02:20
of 2,000 de molten
00:02:24
rock and it's because of this magma
00:02:26
chamber that the cave is sitting on that
00:02:28
the temperature inside is so incredibly
00:02:30
hot 45° C with 95% humidity the only way
00:02:35
I can simulate that before I go to the
00:02:36
cave is to get into the sauna and crank
00:02:39
it right
00:02:41
up there are few places on Earth as hot
00:02:44
and humid as the cave will be and this
00:02:46
sauna is the best way to experience
00:02:48
these extreme
00:02:51
conditions the idea is I want to see how
00:02:53
long I can physically stay in this room
00:02:55
stand it because it's going to be
00:02:57
horrible in the cave once I'm there I
00:02:59
will have a special chilling suit that
00:03:01
I'll be wearing but that'll still only
00:03:03
help a small amount it'll extend my
00:03:06
workable time in the cave from 15
00:03:08
minutes to about 45 minutes if I were to
00:03:11
stay any longer I would probably lose
00:03:13
Consciousness pass out and possibly
00:03:18
die the longer I sit inside this Cedar
00:03:21
Furnace the more I realize what this
00:03:23
Expedition is going to do to my body not
00:03:26
to mention our cameras and
00:03:28
microphones
00:03:36
I want to push myself as hard as I can
00:03:37
today in here just to get
00:03:40
myself mentally prepared as well as
00:03:42
physically prepared for the actual
00:03:44
rigors of being in the cave it's going
00:03:46
to be probably the most extreme thing
00:03:48
that I've ever
00:03:57
done on my way to Mexico I make a stop
00:04:00
in New York
00:04:03
City to scratch another item off my
00:04:05
bucket
00:04:06
[Music]
00:04:13
list this is the headquarters of the
00:04:15
Explorers Club which I am a member and I
00:04:18
have the incredible honor of being able
00:04:20
to carry one of their Flags into the
00:04:22
cave time to pick it
00:04:24
up this unique organization has been
00:04:27
fostering exploration for over a 100
00:04:29
years
00:04:30
its illustrious members include Robert
00:04:32
Perry Sir Edmund Hillary and Neil
00:04:36
[Music]
00:04:38
[Applause]
00:04:42
Armstrong one of the longstanding
00:04:44
traditions of the club is assigning
00:04:46
special Flags to be carried on
00:04:48
significant
00:04:51
Expeditions flags have been to both
00:04:53
poles across the Pacific with Thor hll
00:04:57
and to the Moon
00:05:00
uh George on behalf of the Explorers
00:05:02
Club members um the board of directors
00:05:05
and the flag and honors committee I'd
00:05:07
like to present you with flag number 74
00:05:09
to take with you on the Nika Crystal
00:05:12
Cave Expedition good luck thank you so
00:05:14
much my
00:05:17
pleasure and so armed with my historic
00:05:20
flag I head for
00:05:28
Mexico I arrive in the northern town of
00:05:31
Chihuahua traveling with fellow
00:05:33
Adventurer Nick H who will join me on
00:05:35
this incredible
00:05:37
journey well Nick and I have made it to
00:05:39
Mexico we just touched down in Chihuahua
00:05:41
and we're going to check in basically
00:05:43
just get a bit of an orientation safety
00:05:45
briefing that type of thing and then
00:05:47
rest up tonight because tomorrow it's
00:05:48
going to be a really long
00:05:53
day you're going to be so tired I'm sure
00:05:56
I'm sure about that exhausted cuz you
00:05:58
know there's
00:06:00
for uh more than 50° yes no and the
00:06:04
humid it's more than 50 yeah I thought
00:06:06
it was 45 uh 45 yesterday was uh 52
00:06:12
52 and wow fantastic I cannot wait uh
00:06:17
I'm just I'm on Cloud9 I'm so excited
00:06:20
cuz I've been literally dreaming about
00:06:23
going to this exact spot for 2 years now
00:06:26
so I'm like a kid in a candy
00:06:30
store of course this candy store can
00:06:33
kill
00:06:36
[Music]
00:06:42
you after 2 years of planning I've
00:06:45
traveled 3,000 km to Northern Mexico for
00:06:48
a once- in a-lifetime chance to explore
00:06:51
one of the most fascinating and
00:06:53
dangerous geological wonders of all time
00:06:57
well it has been a long track but I can
00:06:59
find finally see my destination town of
00:07:01
Nika and Nika
00:07:06
[Music]
00:07:11
Mountain we arrive at the mine and meet
00:07:14
up with the team that will assist us on
00:07:16
this
00:07:19
adventure this mountain has been
00:07:21
actively mined for over a 100 years and
00:07:24
the shafts run for thousands of meters
00:07:28
Underground
00:07:30
we begin with a rather claustrophobic
00:07:33
25-minute drive down to the staging
00:07:36
[Music]
00:07:41
area this is amazing this road is carved
00:07:44
right into the side of this mountain
00:07:47
quite the trip down that's for sure the
00:07:49
long dark winding tunnel with no
00:07:54
end this is one Wild
00:07:58
Ride
00:08:06
okay let me give you a little tour of
00:08:07
what's going on here this is what we
00:08:10
call the antichamber the area before
00:08:12
going into the cave and this is the sort
00:08:14
of the staging area we've got the
00:08:15
cooling packs here over here we've got
00:08:18
the freezers for storing the ice for the
00:08:22
suits and then down here liquids
00:08:25
Refreshments water you need to have a
00:08:26
lot of that down here wow every step I
00:08:28
take it gets hot
00:08:30
then there's the equipment staging area
00:08:32
here medical station this is my area
00:08:35
here for all my personal gear and then
00:08:39
through that metal door is the cave
00:08:42
within minutes I can feel the energy
00:08:44
draining effects of the climate down
00:08:46
here and this is just the beginning just
00:08:49
to put things in perspective this is the
00:08:51
cool staging area and it is 41° with 54%
00:08:56
humidity so it is only going to get much
00:08:59
much
00:09:00
worse much more impressive is it
00:09:03
possible today to go and get a quick
00:09:05
look yes the plan is we want you to go
00:09:08
to the cave yes no suit just go in fast
00:09:10
yes just to feel the the the real heat
00:09:13
exactly otherwise you won't understand
00:09:16
how your body is behaving in
00:09:19
a atmosphere like the extreme
00:09:21
environment like that get a taste of it
00:09:23
go in and feel it and then realize what
00:09:26
the suit is doing exactly when you're
00:09:28
wearing it and appreciate
00:09:29
how much it's helping you the doctor
00:09:31
measur your pressure and measures your
00:09:33
oxygen but we want to be sure that you
00:09:36
are not going to faint in the caes we
00:09:38
would would take a lot of effort to
00:09:39
bring you out right so so we need you to
00:09:43
Pump Air I just to to measure
00:09:46
your volum probably we're going to be
00:09:49
here around 8 hours yes 9 it's going to
00:09:53
be a long day it's not a long day in
00:09:55
hours no but in the conditions it's
00:09:57
extreme exactly yeah so this is not a
00:10:00
normal workplace this is one of the most
00:10:02
extreme environments in the world so so
00:10:04
you have to be very careful is the
00:10:06
combination of the Sahara Desert and the
00:10:08
Amazon Amazon jungle
00:10:10
together sit
00:10:13
here before we can enter the cave Nick
00:10:16
and I must undergo medical
00:10:20
testing to ensure that we're fit enough
00:10:23
to withstand the stress that these
00:10:25
extreme conditions will put on our
00:10:28
bodies
00:10:30
once the medical team okays us it's time
00:10:33
to enter the
00:10:35
cave
00:10:38
unprotected but nothing can prepare you
00:10:41
for what lies Beyond this
00:10:43
door oh man that is
00:10:47
[Music]
00:10:54
unreal I'm about to enter the forbidding
00:10:57
climate of the Nika Crystal cave in
00:11:00
Mexico it's so hot and humid inside that
00:11:03
our cameras immediately fog
00:11:05
[Music]
00:11:07
up entering the cave
00:11:09
unprotected we'll start feeling the
00:11:11
effects of heat stroke within
00:11:14
minutes watch your footing it's very
00:11:17
very
00:11:18
uneven it's over 50° in here right now e
00:11:23
with about 90%
00:11:25
humidity the reason it's so hot in this
00:11:27
cave is that it lies on a fault and
00:11:29
underneath that fault is a magma chamber
00:11:32
it's that hot magma that's heating the
00:11:34
groundwater and then heating here with
00:11:36
all this incredible
00:11:38
humidity just want to get a feel for it
00:11:40
right now without the cooling suits so
00:11:44
that we can give it a real try later on
00:11:46
but look at these crystals my
00:11:49
[Music]
00:11:51
God these crystals are made of selenite
00:11:55
which is crystallized gypsum gypsum is
00:11:58
very common mineral it's actually the
00:12:01
same thing that's in drywall the Gip
00:12:02
rock that you have in your walls at home
00:12:05
but these crystals formed in extreme
00:12:08
heat when this chamber was filled with
00:12:09
water the water was well over
00:12:12
50° and was very stable for about half a
00:12:15
million
00:12:17
years and those conditions are so
00:12:20
incredibly unique and so rare that we
00:12:22
don't even know if there's anything like
00:12:23
this in the world other than this place
00:12:26
these crystals weigh about well the big
00:12:28
ones weigh about 50 tons if not a bit
00:12:30
more each and there's the large crystals
00:12:34
here and then there's what I call these
00:12:35
sharks teeth these daggers of crystals
00:12:38
that are all over the walls and the
00:12:41
[Music]
00:12:43
floor these is oppressive heat we're in
00:12:48
a furnace man it's
00:12:50
stifling what's happening is your body
00:12:53
is incapable of shedding the heat that's
00:12:54
in here so you sweat but it doesn't
00:12:56
evaporate your body tries to radiate the
00:12:58
the heat but it can't cuz the air is
00:12:59
hotter than your skin and so the heat
00:13:01
just builds up and your cells basically
00:13:03
die so right now if we were to stay in
00:13:06
here we would absolutely eventually die
00:13:08
we would die how many minutes have we
00:13:10
been
00:13:13
in I think we need to start working our
00:13:15
way back slowly because it'll probably
00:13:17
be about 12 minutes by the time we get
00:13:19
out of here so that's pushing it too
00:13:24
far okay let's go keep going
00:13:34
that is just unbelievable it's just hard
00:13:37
to imagine how hot it is in there and
00:13:39
when you scramble up those last few
00:13:41
steps it's just takes it out of you the
00:13:43
entrance to the cave is one of the
00:13:45
highest points and that makes it one of
00:13:47
the hottest points so you really got
00:13:49
blasted when you first go in and first
00:13:50
come
00:13:52
out it feels like walking into a blast
00:13:55
furnace a wall of heat hits you and you
00:13:58
start to feel the pressure and the Heat
00:14:01
and you start to sweat
00:14:02
instantly it's like being in the most
00:14:05
unbelievably beautiful unbelievably
00:14:06
dangerous sauna you can
00:14:08
[Music]
00:14:15
imagine now that we have everything set
00:14:17
for tomorrow's extended exploration it's
00:14:20
time to go rest
00:14:21
up tomorrow is going to be a challenging
00:14:25
[Music]
00:14:27
day
00:14:29
[Music]
00:14:30
[Applause]
00:14:31
[Music]
00:14:33
and the next morning it's back down the
00:14:35
narrow winding tunnel to the
00:14:39
antichamber after our exploratory trip
00:14:41
yesterday Nick and I now know just how
00:14:44
hot it's going to be in
00:14:46
there so we really have to get ourselves
00:14:48
psyched for this
00:14:51
day Nick you got everything prepared
00:14:53
you're pretty much good to
00:14:57
go
00:14:59
the first task is to prepare the
00:15:01
specially designed cooling suits which
00:15:04
will enable us to safely stay in the
00:15:06
oppressive heat of the chamber up to
00:15:08
four times as long as yesterday's
00:15:10
unprotected
00:15:14
entrance the suits basically turn us
00:15:16
into human
00:15:20
popsicles these ice filled suits help to
00:15:23
Shield us from the outside heat while
00:15:25
also cooling our core body temperature
00:15:27
and providing us with chilled air to
00:15:30
breathe but the suit's effectiveness is
00:15:34
limited so we have to rely on our
00:15:36
instincts and our support team to keep
00:15:39
us from experiencing potentially fatal
00:15:41
heat
00:15:45
stroke okay first cave entry with the
00:15:48
cooling
00:15:49
suit Manuel and his team will be
00:15:52
monitoring us
00:15:55
closely only about 60 others have ever
00:15:58
EXP explored this cave for good reason
00:16:01
Beyond this door is one of the hottest
00:16:04
places on Earth in which humans have
00:16:06
tried to
00:16:07
[Applause]
00:16:15
survive inside the Crystal Cave in Nika
00:16:18
Mexico the heat and humidity are almost
00:16:21
unbearable over 50° C hot enough to kill
00:16:26
a person in minutes we wear special
00:16:29
cooling suits to hopefully keep us from
00:16:31
developing fatal heat
00:16:33
stroke although I'm anxious to make the
00:16:35
most of my limited time in here the
00:16:38
treacherous terrain and bulky suits make
00:16:40
getting around a Monumental
00:16:56
task every step on these slippery shark
00:16:59
tooth crystals has to be carefully
00:17:02
calculated
00:17:04
W one slip on this terrain could spell
00:17:11
disaster what's your
00:17:13
putting carrying an injured team member
00:17:16
out of the far reaches of this place
00:17:18
would be an almost impossible
00:17:21
task so we tread carefully over the half
00:17:24
million year old Crystal
00:17:27
formations what makes the discovery of
00:17:29
this one-of-a-kind geological wonder
00:17:31
even more fascinating is that until the
00:17:34
year 2000 this entire chamber was
00:17:36
completely
00:17:39
[Music]
00:17:44
underwater an interesting thing about
00:17:46
the mine here is that this cave is
00:17:49
temporary once the mine is no longer
00:17:51
viable they're going to turn off the
00:17:53
pumps and this whole Cavern will flood
00:17:55
yet again just like it was 500,000 years
00:17:57
ago totally lost to human
00:18:00
eyes this may be my one chance to
00:18:03
experience this incredible
00:18:15
place so right now I'm sitting up on one
00:18:17
of the larger
00:18:19
crystals and this is my
00:18:21
view
00:18:23
totally
00:18:25
unreal one of the Curious features of
00:18:27
the cave is there are some very big
00:18:30
crystals that are broken and fallen on
00:18:32
the floor here there's really only one
00:18:34
thing that could have caused it and
00:18:36
that's an ancient earthquake look at
00:18:39
this this
00:18:41
Crystal probably weighs about 50 tons
00:18:44
but yet it was snapped like it was a
00:18:46
piece of dry spaghetti I don't know when
00:18:48
it happened but I do know that this cave
00:18:51
does lie on a fault line so earthquakes
00:18:54
are certainly not unheard of here and
00:18:56
this proof positive of that
00:18:59
as we struggle to explore as much of the
00:19:01
cave as possible we get the sign that
00:19:04
our time is almost up you have 10
00:19:07
minutes okay I copy that 10
00:19:11
minutes with little time or energy left
00:19:14
I find a good spot to fulfill my duties
00:19:16
to the club to which I proudly
00:19:18
[Music]
00:19:20
belong
00:19:22
that there we are in honor of this
00:19:25
exploration proudly displaying the flag
00:19:28
of the Explorers Club here in the
00:19:30
Crystal Cave of
00:19:31
[Applause]
00:19:33
[Music]
00:19:34
giants this Explorers Club flag has an
00:19:37
illustrious history it's been chased by
00:19:40
Nazis it's been to Greenland 12,000 ft
00:19:42
below the surface of the ocean it's been
00:19:44
along the Amazon and now it's been to
00:19:47
the Crystal
00:19:53
Cave getting so
00:19:56
weak we've stayed well beyond what is
00:19:58
considered a safe amount of time and our
00:20:01
cooling suits are beginning to fail
00:20:05
W can't see where my footh holds
00:20:09
are our Mexican support team is becoming
00:20:12
concerned for our safety and warn us to
00:20:14
get back to the antichamber as quickly
00:20:16
as possible okay okay we're working our
00:20:19
way back we just need to find the
00:20:21
way getting low on cool
00:20:25
air we're heading out now we have to go
00:20:29
right
00:20:31
now
00:20:33
[Music]
00:20:35
okay okay we're already over time we got
00:20:37
to get out of here our time is up let's
00:20:43
go it takes every ounce of strength we
00:20:46
have to get back to the
00:20:49
entrance even the sauna couldn't prepare
00:20:51
me for the brutal effects of prolonged
00:20:53
exposure to these
00:20:56
conditions we fin finally make it out
00:20:59
and the relatively cool 41° antichamber
00:21:02
is a welcome relief okay we're coming
00:21:06
out that last entry was supposed to be
00:21:09
15 minutes but it ended up being 23
00:21:12
which doesn't sound like lots
00:21:14
but when you're counting down the
00:21:17
survivability of a place in
00:21:19
minutes those few minutes make a big
00:21:21
difference percentage wise time to rest
00:21:25
and
00:21:26
rehydrate God that's hard
00:21:30
this cave is just so absolutely
00:21:32
beautiful it's such a treasure it's like
00:21:34
being inside a giant geode that normally
00:21:37
a big one you could hold in your hand
00:21:39
this is just so massive so unique and I
00:21:42
consider it such a privilege to be able
00:21:45
to go inside and experience
00:21:48
it as harsh as it might
00:21:52
be this is what I do I explore the
00:21:54
extremes and there's nothing more
00:21:56
extreme than this place
00:22:01
the inhospitable climate and the beauty
00:22:04
of this unique natural
00:22:06
phenomenon made the adventure to the
00:22:08
Crystal Caves one of my most
00:22:10
memorable if such an impressive sight
00:22:13
can remain hidden from us for so
00:22:16
long then what other wonders remain to
00:22:18
be uncovered on this
00:22:20
[Music]
00:22:26
planet
00:22:29

Description:

In 2000, a remarkable find was made in Chihuahua, Mexico, of a spectacular cave filled with giant crystals, some over 12 meters long. But it is a intensely difficult spot to explore – with temperatures over 50 degrees C and humidity approaching 100%. George leads an Explorers Club Flag Expedition into the cave, wearing special refrigerated suits and respirators to battle the extreme environment.
