00:00:11
hey this is Ryan Turner here from vd.net
00:00:13
and today we're going to be putting an
00:00:16
injection pump and a timing belt on an
00:00:18
aaz now the same basic procedure works
00:00:22
for any ve pump diesel uh whether it be
00:00:26
an aaz an MF an me an ahu or even an alh
00:00:31
it's the same basic enough procedure uh
00:00:34
but this this one is going in our aaz
00:00:37
caddy swap so I bought this motor
00:00:40
without a pump on it so we're going to
00:00:41
put a pump on it because I had some and
00:00:44
then we're going to cover that uh in
00:00:45
this video here because a lot of people
00:00:48
are really intimidated when it comes to
00:00:50
putting a pump on a vehicle you know
00:00:52
because getting the crank time and the
00:00:54
cam time and the pump time and
00:00:56
everything together without bending
00:00:58
valves and making sure it runs just it's
00:01:00
really intimidating for a new guy that
00:01:02
hasn't done it before or even an
00:01:05
intermediate guy that hasn't done it
00:01:06
that often or hasn't done it in a while
00:01:08
I haven't done it in a while either so
00:01:10
I'm going to have to go back over some
00:01:12
of this stuff and refresh my memory even
00:01:14
though it's not that complicated of a
00:01:16
procedure it's just something that you
00:01:17
want to double check and triple check
00:01:18
and just make sure because this is a
00:01:20
very critical stage and you don't want
00:01:22
to mess anything up so time is your
00:01:24
friend here research is your friend here
00:01:26
watching this video a couple times might
00:01:28
help out so let's go ahead and let's
00:01:31
start this process and get this motor
00:01:33
ready to
00:01:34
go here we have the side of the aaz
00:01:37
motor um I don't know where the cam or
00:01:40
the crank is set I don't know where the
00:01:42
cam set we actually I've loosened the
00:01:44
gear off to get this back plate off
00:01:45
earlier in a video series and the pump
00:01:48
is just it's just thrown on here it's
00:01:50
still loose uh it's it's roughly tighten
00:01:54
down um so what we're going to do is
00:01:56
we're going to go through setting all
00:01:58
these things where they need need to be
00:02:01
a couple tools that we have is a crank
00:02:04
pul or a cam pulley sprocket we're going
00:02:06
to use that on this injection pump here
00:02:08
we have a Mark III
00:02:11
ahu uh crank lock both of these tools
00:02:14
came from metal nerd so you can check
00:02:16
those out at metal nerd.com and that'll
00:02:18
just fit over here um
00:02:22
into get my head out of the way into
00:02:25
some little grooves here and it just
00:02:26
Loosely holds it into place we'll
00:02:28
actually Bolt the crankshaft to it uh so
00:02:31
that'll hold that in place we will have
00:02:33
a um tool to lock the cam shaft into
00:02:37
position I that's still over there in
00:02:39
the box so I have to run over there and
00:02:40
get that um and then you'll also need
00:02:42
your assorted tools to do this you know
00:02:45
sockets and wrenches and all that
00:02:49
jazz we're going to start this process
00:02:51
by removing the valve cover on this
00:02:54
engine it happens to be
00:02:56
three 10 mm bolts and these little
00:02:59
grommets and
00:03:18
washers we will remove the valve cover
00:03:21
gasket as
00:03:26
well and now we will check to see where
00:03:29
the cam shaft is
00:03:31
at starting off with the cam shaft
00:03:34
there's a couple things that you want to
00:03:35
check first to make sure that it's a top
00:03:37
dead center the point of this lobe will
00:03:39
be up and the point of this lobe on
00:03:41
cylinder one will be up this is the
00:03:44
crankshaft and that means these valves
00:03:47
are not depressed at all and the valves
00:03:50
are completely closed so we'll look for
00:03:52
both of these to be up and then at the
00:03:55
end of the crankshaft we will look uh at
00:03:58
the slot there at the end of the cam
00:04:01
shaft here you will see a slot at the
00:04:03
end of it that goes across the entire
00:04:05
distance this is for a lock tool that
00:04:09
will slide in that Groove and go into
00:04:12
place
00:04:13
now currently it is not quite perfectly
00:04:16
aligned uh so it doesn't just slide in
00:04:19
there but if you look at the Lock tool
00:04:21
itself there's a lip here and this lip
00:04:24
is made to go inside that and lock into
00:04:27
place there this is not for to work this
00:04:30
is simply for alignment do not put your
00:04:32
tool in here in the end and try to break
00:04:35
the pulley loose if you are uh at that
00:04:38
step don't do that that'll just mess
00:04:40
stuff up use the actual pulley holder or
00:04:43
make one
00:04:46
yourself while the can shaft may be on
00:04:48
just about top dead center the
00:04:51
crankshaft may be halfway out the
00:04:54
crankshaft is made to rotate twice for
00:04:58
every time that the cam shaft here
00:04:59
rotates once so while this is on top
00:05:02
dead center just about the crankshaft
00:05:05
could be either on top dead center or it
00:05:07
could be 180° out so that's what we're
00:05:10
going to check next these two do have to
00:05:13
work in relationship so if you have uh
00:05:16
to rotate the crankshaft a large amount
00:05:18
you may also have to rotate the cam
00:05:20
shaft in
00:05:21
relationship uh with the crank shaft to
00:05:24
bring it into top dead center because
00:05:26
the this is an interference engine and
00:05:29
the valves will get in the way and stop
00:05:30
you from rotating
00:05:33
them here is the inspection hole to tell
00:05:36
whether the the crankshaft is at top
00:05:39
dead center or not there is a little
00:05:41
arrow right here that looks down and it
00:05:45
points onto a mark on the flywheel
00:05:49
itself so let's look at that
00:05:51
Mark this is just an extra head lying
00:05:54
around if you look right here there is a
00:05:57
little zero with a tick on it um you can
00:06:02
also tell it's between these notches
00:06:04
right here so if you're rotating around
00:06:06
and you see a notch here or you know
00:06:09
that you're coming up pretty close to it
00:06:11
uh and that arrow that is on the
00:06:13
transmission will Point down at this and
00:06:15
then you will line up that arrow with
00:06:18
this tick mark on the on the flywheel
00:06:21
itself um to know where if you're at top
00:06:24
dead center so let's look down then
00:06:26
through the hole at
00:06:28
that
00:06:34
here we are going to attempt to rotate
00:06:36
the crankshaft and the cam shaft
00:06:38
together so that we can bring them
00:06:40
around to top dead center um this is
00:06:43
going to take a
00:06:46
12 um 19 mm for the crankshaft bolt if
00:06:51
you have an older motor and it happens
00:06:54
to be a Sixpoint and not a 12o now would
00:06:57
be a good time to go ahead and replace
00:06:59
that bolt uh with the upgraded 12p Point
00:07:03
style we are also going to use our um
00:07:08
cam shaft holding
00:07:10
tools basically they're a set of angle
00:07:12
irons with some little Nubs at the end
00:07:16
to hold on to the crankshaft you could
00:07:19
make these yourself if you wanted to uh
00:07:21
this particular set came from metal nerd
00:07:24
uh very good stuff so I would go check
00:07:27
them out Chuck there as a good guy and
00:07:30
he's makes great
00:07:31
products so we're going to
00:07:34
start kind of doing this
00:07:37
together but you could do a little bit
00:07:40
at a
00:07:47
time now you can go so far and you can
00:07:50
lightly feel them tap now I'm not
00:07:52
putting any pressure here you can you
00:07:55
can feel the valves there so we
00:07:58
definitely don't want to exert any
00:08:01
pressure on this to bend these
00:08:28
valves
00:08:36
all right our cam shaft is just about
00:08:38
perfect at top dead center it's not
00:08:40
quite I need a little bit of tweaking
00:08:42
for the lock to slide in so that's
00:08:49
okay now we're going to take our
00:08:51
flashlight and look down on the hole and
00:08:53
see if we can tell how close we
00:08:58
are
00:09:19
all right now we are going to take our
00:09:21
cam shaft locking
00:09:23
tool put it down here at the back and
00:09:26
then take our c am shaft rotating
00:09:32
tool and we're going to wiggle it back
00:09:34
and forth till the lock slides
00:09:47
in and you want it nice and even so the
00:09:50
lock will
00:09:51
wiggle back and forth in the channel
00:09:54
there's not a lot of wiggle room um but
00:09:58
you just you want to make sure that that
00:09:59
you do that and there's actually a
00:10:00
procedure that I'll post uh where you
00:10:02
can use feeler gauges to make to make
00:10:04
sure that this is perfectly perfectly
00:10:07
perfect now that the crankshaft and the
00:10:09
cam shaft are both locked into position
00:10:11
we're going to take a 19 mm the same one
00:10:13
we use on our crankshaft and take our uh
00:10:17
hold down tool and break this bolt loose
00:10:19
and free the sprocket up for the actual
00:10:21
timing of the pump and
00:10:23
everything
00:10:28
so
00:10:29
we'll hold
00:10:37
that there we
00:10:39
go lightly loosen
00:10:45
it then we are going to take and knock
00:10:48
this loose from behind with a
00:10:52
punch to remove the cam sprocket there
00:10:55
is a tiny hole in the back plate here
00:10:58
that I'm going to take a 316 Allen
00:11:02
because that just works well and I'm
00:11:04
going to tap lightly tap it till it
00:11:06
comes
00:11:15
off there we go we can see now that it
00:11:17
is
00:11:19
loose zooming in here with the pump in
00:11:21
the right location you can see that you
00:11:24
have access to the other pump mounting
00:11:27
bolts as well to loosen or tighten the
00:11:30
pump our pump is still pretty loose uh
00:11:34
because I haven't tightened them up yet
00:11:36
so with the pump locked in place I'm
00:11:38
going to go ahead and snug up the three
00:11:40
bolts here plus the one on the back side
00:11:43
of the pump and then we'll get ready to
00:11:45
throw our timing belt on
00:11:47
here now that the cam shaft is locked
00:11:51
and the gear is loose the crankshaft is
00:11:55
locked into place the pump is locked
00:11:57
into place we are ready to put our
00:11:59
timing belt on
00:12:01
finally sometimes it's a good idea if if
00:12:03
you're in colder areas to let the timing
00:12:05
belt sit out in the sun or over a HVAC
00:12:09
vent to try to warm up uh you don't want
00:12:12
to apply any real heat to it you just
00:12:14
want it to be warm so that it stretches
00:12:16
and gives a
00:12:17
bit um the tensioner is on but I've
00:12:21
already taken the nut off of it so that
00:12:23
it can slide out and what we're going to
00:12:25
do is we're just going to barely put on
00:12:29
the outside
00:12:32
edge start by wrapping it around whoops
00:12:36
it will jump off on you so don't worry
00:12:38
about
00:12:40
that this distance the distance between
00:12:43
these teeth don't matter because this
00:12:46
pulley does
00:12:48
Bend but what does matter is the spacing
00:12:52
between the P the injection pump pulley
00:12:56
and the crankshaft so you want to make
00:12:59
sure that you have all of this slack
00:13:03
here taken out of it now you see if I
00:13:05
put this back fairly far on the pulley
00:13:09
here you don't have enough room to get
00:13:11
this bottom part of the belt on so now
00:13:15
that it's close I'll go ahead and I'll
00:13:17
inch up some of the slack
00:13:27
here
00:13:42
and just take your time with this
00:13:44
process it is a process they don't
00:13:46
always go on smoothly the first
00:13:57
time
00:13:59
now on this pulley itself there is a
00:14:01
locking Tab and that little locking tab
00:14:04
is supposed to be rotated up into place
00:14:08
here so once the belt is all the way
00:14:13
back on the
00:14:15
pulley you may get a little bit of
00:14:17
timing belt fuzz there we're going to
00:14:20
most likely use a
00:14:22
screwdriver to get this pulley tab back
00:14:26
into its
00:14:27
position
00:14:30
all
00:14:33
right and now the belt is on it is more
00:14:36
intimidating than it really is just take
00:14:38
your time make sure your marks don't
00:14:40
move our pump still our cam still good
00:14:43
here our pump's still on spot there's
00:14:46
not a lot of excess slop this is very
00:14:49
tight through here which is what we want
00:14:52
now that we can get our um now that this
00:14:55
is all together we'll go ahead and we'll
00:14:57
tighten this up and we will be able to
00:15:00
remove our locks and we should be pretty
00:15:02
pretty close to top dead center on
00:15:04
everything
00:15:08
still if you look here the pulley has a
00:15:11
little Notch right here on this metal
00:15:14
outside piece that the plastic ring
00:15:16
holds around and then it has a
00:15:17
corresponding notch on this inside
00:15:19
washer here so what you're going to do
00:15:23
is rotate it
00:15:24
up like
00:15:26
this until
00:15:31
let me go back cuz I don't have that
00:15:32
loosen
00:15:36
enough what you're going to do is you're
00:15:38
going to rotate it up until the two
00:15:41
notches line up and then you'll take a
00:15:44
13 mm and tighten it
00:15:57
down
00:16:01
there we go I just had to use what I had
00:16:05
handy now we are ready to tighten up the
00:16:07
cam shaft sprocket remove all of our
00:16:11
locks and give it a few turns around to
00:16:13
make sure everything's still lines up
00:16:15
before we go to timing the injection
00:16:16
pump
00:16:25
[Applause]
00:16:27
itself
00:17:00
all right
00:17:01
our
00:17:03
sprocket lock is still
00:17:05
loose now that everything is loose and
00:17:09
our motor is free to turn we're going to
00:17:10
check our belt tightness make sure it's
00:17:13
not too tight it can still
00:17:15
turn and now we are going to Bar it
00:17:18
over two or three complete rotations
00:17:21
just to make sure everything spins
00:17:27
freely
00:17:29
all right zoomed in here we can see the
00:17:31
bolt itself it is between all of the
00:17:33
injector lines and we'll just simply
00:17:36
take a 12 mil on an
00:17:41
extension maybe we don't need the
00:17:54
extension all right just slightly loosen
00:17:56
it up I would go go ahead and make sure
00:17:59
this whole area is clean first before
00:18:01
you do
00:18:24
this and the plug has been removed has
00:18:27
quite a bit of threat on
00:18:29
it we're going to take the adapter piece
00:18:34
and thread it into the pump
00:18:37
itself with the motor at top dead
00:18:40
center and then we are going to take our
00:18:45
gauge slide it
00:18:47
in till it
00:18:50
fits okay so it's here at zero you can
00:18:53
barely see it there and then we're going
00:18:55
to go around and give it two mm of
00:19:00
preload and that 2 mm of preload is just
00:19:08
so is just so that the plunger has
00:19:11
enough to move back that way into the
00:19:14
pump so we're going to take our 19 mm
00:19:18
put it on the crankshaft and go back
00:19:22
until the gauge we're going to go
00:19:24
counterclockwise so towards the
00:19:27
alternator back until it stops
00:19:33
moving okay you can see it stopped
00:19:35
moving there we'll go forward again just
00:19:37
so you can watch the needle and we'll go
00:19:41
back till it stops there now we're going
00:19:44
to zero
00:19:49
that all right now we are going to go
00:19:52
back to Top Dead Center and see what
00:19:56
kind of lift we have on the pump
00:20:10
okay right here is 50 on my gauge and we
00:20:15
need for an aaz it is 80 which is right
00:20:17
about
00:20:18
here so we are simply going to rotate
00:20:21
the
00:20:24
pump until we get
00:20:27
there
00:20:30
make sure you loosen things up
00:20:39
first
00:20:54
oops all right too much that gave us a
00:20:57
millimeter
00:20:58
that's 90 oh
00:21:04
[Music]
00:21:08
all right that's
00:21:11
