00:00:00
if you struggle with keeping promises to
00:00:02
yourself then this video is for
00:00:04
[Music]
00:00:08
you so over the past few weeks we've
00:00:10
been talking about developing everything
00:00:12
from self-control to overcoming our
00:00:15
excuses and becoming more disciplined
00:00:18
and one of the areas that I feel like is
00:00:19
really necessary in order to see the
00:00:22
growth that you want to see in yourself
00:00:24
is the ability to keep promises that you
00:00:27
make to yourself we keep promises to
00:00:30
everyone else we keep promises to our
00:00:33
family to our friends to our bosses we
00:00:36
keep promises to our clients but when it
00:00:39
comes to keeping promises to ourselves
00:00:41
that seems to be an area where a lot of
00:00:43
people struggle I know for me I would
00:00:46
always say I would do things and I was
00:00:48
going to do things by this certain time
00:00:50
and I would have very meaningful
00:00:52
intentions when I said it but then
00:00:55
sometimes time would go by or I didn't
00:00:58
feel the urgency that I once felt before
00:01:00
and I would find that the things that I
00:01:02
would say I would get done would kind of
00:01:04
fall on the back burner and this
00:01:07
honestly became a real issue for me
00:01:09
especially when it came to
00:01:10
procrastination I would spend so much
00:01:13
time working on things for everyone else
00:01:15
that by the time I got home to do my own
00:01:18
things after my 9 to-5 I would be
00:01:20
depleted and I wouldn't even have enough
00:01:22
energy to show up for myself and so when
00:01:25
I began to develop self-control and
00:01:27
discipline one of the areas that I
00:01:29
really had to appli that was in keeping
00:01:31
the promises I make to myself especially
00:01:33
when it comes to things like completing
00:01:36
personal passion projects or completing
00:01:38
God projects even most recently when it
00:01:41
comes to keeping the promises I make to
00:01:43
myself in health and fitness I've been
00:01:45
taking my health Journey very seriously
00:01:47
and for a long time I would tell myself
00:01:49
I wanted to be consistent in the gym and
00:01:51
I just wouldn't do it I would make so
00:01:53
many excuses like I'm tired I just can't
00:01:56
do it and then I had to really say to
00:01:57
myself like when are you going to keep
00:01:59
keep your word right how can you say you
00:02:02
want to be a woman of Integrity but you
00:02:04
can't even keep your word to yourself
00:02:06
right these are the conversations I
00:02:08
would have with myself and it's time for
00:02:09
you to start having the same
00:02:11
conversations really take some time to
00:02:13
think about that and if you haven't done
00:02:15
it ask yourself why the craziest part
00:02:18
about struggling to keep promises to
00:02:20
yourself is that we often take this into
00:02:23
other aspects including our relationship
00:02:25
with God we keep our word to people but
00:02:27
we don't keep our word to God I remember
00:02:30
I was studying the Bible and this
00:02:31
particular passage of scripture came up
00:02:33
that I had never seen before and when I
00:02:35
tell you it smack me across the face and
00:02:37
I want to read it to you it says when
00:02:40
you make a promise to God don't delay in
00:02:43
following through for God takes no
00:02:46
pleasure in fools keep all the promises
00:02:49
you make to him it is better to say
00:02:52
nothing than to make a promise and not
00:02:54
keep it don't let your mouth make you
00:02:57
sin and don't defend your by telling the
00:03:00
temple messenger that the promise you
00:03:03
made was a mistake that would make God
00:03:05
angry and he might wipe out everything
00:03:08
you have achieved talk is cheap like
00:03:11
Daydreams and other useless activities
00:03:14
fear God instead y'all when I read that
00:03:17
scripture the conviction of the Lord
00:03:18
Came Upon me so heavy because all of the
00:03:21
things that I promised God that I said
00:03:23
that I would do they just began to rush
00:03:25
through my mind I thought about all the
00:03:28
times where I told God that I would
00:03:29
spend time with him and then I let the
00:03:31
day go by I thought about all the times
00:03:33
where I said that I would work on this
00:03:35
one thing that he told me to do and then
00:03:36
I prioritize other things like all these
00:03:39
things begin to rush through my mind and
00:03:41
maybe even as I'm saying this these
00:03:43
things are starting to come to your mind
00:03:45
and you're realizing that you really do
00:03:47
struggle to keep promises to yourself
00:03:50
and not just to yourself but also to God
00:03:53
this is an area that affects every
00:03:54
single part of our lives and if we don't
00:03:57
start to make a change now then we're
00:03:59
never going to reap a harvest not
00:04:02
keeping promises to yourself is like
00:04:03
planting a seed expecting a harvest but
00:04:06
never watering it how do you expect your
00:04:09
seed to grow if you never water it right
00:04:12
keeping promises to yourself is like
00:04:14
watering the seed your word is the seed
00:04:17
that you plant and when you begin to
00:04:18
show up and put forth the effort that's
00:04:21
you watering it when you say that you're
00:04:23
going to do something and you keep your
00:04:25
word there is fruit attached to that
00:04:27
some of us are even missing seasons and
00:04:29
blessings that God has for us because we
00:04:32
won't show up that scripture tells us
00:04:35
that it is better to say nothing at all
00:04:37
to keep your mouth shut than to make a
00:04:39
promise to God and break it God takes
00:04:42
our words seriously the word of God said
00:04:45
that life and death is in the power of
00:04:46
the tongue and those who love to talk
00:04:48
will eat the fruit of it you're either
00:04:50
ring ripe fruit or rotten fruit by the
00:04:53
words that you choose to speak over your
00:04:55
life now I know that we all have
00:04:57
different reasons why we struggle to
00:04:58
keep promises to ourselves sometimes
00:05:01
it's a Time issue where you may have
00:05:03
more demands than you have capacity and
00:05:05
you're still trying to figure out how to
00:05:07
balance
00:05:08
everything sometimes there may be an
00:05:10
emotional wound that is causing you to
00:05:12
be stuck in your head and to sabotage
00:05:15
yourself sometimes it's a matter of
00:05:17
being overly ambitious this happens a
00:05:20
lot of time and it's one of the reasons
00:05:22
why people struggle to be consistent
00:05:24
sometimes you really do bite off more
00:05:26
than you can choose where you get very
00:05:27
excited about an opportunity or a new
00:05:30
project that you're starting so you set
00:05:32
all of these ambitious goals for
00:05:33
yourself let's say you wanted to start a
00:05:35
YouTube channel and you said you know
00:05:36
what I'm so excited I'm going to post
00:05:38
three videos a week and then you don't
00:05:40
keep the promises to yourself because
00:05:42
you didn't realize the cost and the
00:05:45
level of preparation that it would take
00:05:47
to be able to sustain that and a lot of
00:05:49
us actually do this in our relationship
00:05:51
with God where we are underestimating
00:05:53
how much time it takes to really be
00:05:55
spiritually developed when you come into
00:05:57
the presence of God God does not need
00:06:00
anything from you he's trying to get
00:06:02
something to you and sometimes it takes
00:06:04
more than the 10 minutes that you can
00:06:06
squeeze in in your schedule now again
00:06:08
when you're beginning building your
00:06:09
relationship with God I completely
00:06:11
understand that seasons change and
00:06:13
sometimes time is tighter than others
00:06:15
but there are times where you need to
00:06:17
make more time you need to make it a
00:06:19
priority to press into the presence of
00:06:21
God you need to eliminate some of those
00:06:23
distractions and really lock in or you
00:06:25
will miss what God is trying to do in
00:06:27
your life because you're rushing to the
00:06:28
next thing
00:06:30
honor your promises to God a lot of you
00:06:32
have been saying that you want to get
00:06:33
closer to God and you're going to show
00:06:35
up this year and you're going to study
00:06:36
your Bible and you're going to
00:06:38
prioritize prayer but are you keeping
00:06:40
the promises you make to yourself or are
00:06:43
you making excuses are you saying well I
00:06:45
don't have the time for that I just I
00:06:47
don't have the emotional capacity for
00:06:49
this you know today was a long day I
00:06:51
just can't do it right I just don't have
00:06:53
the energy when you really want
00:06:55
something we make the time for it if you
00:06:58
got home from work and you were tired
00:07:00
and your friend said you know what girl
00:07:02
I'mma pay for you to go to dinner let's
00:07:03
go out I'm sure you would get the energy
00:07:06
we have to really begin to question some
00:07:08
of the things that go through our mind
00:07:10
that prevent us from keeping our
00:07:11
promises to ourselves especially those
00:07:14
of you who have creative projects that
00:07:16
God has told you to work on and maybe
00:07:17
you work a 9 to-5 and the N9 to5 is
00:07:20
draining you but you made a promise to
00:07:22
yourself that you were going to take
00:07:23
that project seriously you have to push
00:07:26
past those moments of fatigue and press
00:07:29
through because the fruit is on the
00:07:31
other side of your commitment to
00:07:33
yourself the fruit is on the other side
00:07:35
of the commitment and the promise you
00:07:37
made to God we often say things like
00:07:39
Lord I love you Lord I'm going to serve
00:07:41
you God you are actually Lord over my
00:07:43
life but is he Lord over your time is
00:07:46
God lord over your time because if he
00:07:50
truly is Lord over your time then you'll
00:07:53
understand that God exists outside of
00:07:54
time and the time that you prioritize to
00:07:57
spend with him the time that you
00:07:58
prioritize to work on the things that
00:08:01
he's told you to do is not time wasted
00:08:03
but in fact God will do more with that
00:08:05
seed that you planted that small seed
00:08:08
than you ever could by yourself and it
00:08:11
all starts with just honoring your
00:08:13
commitments so how do we do this how do
00:08:15
we keep the promises we make to
00:08:17
ourselves and to God first I think we
00:08:19
have to understand what a promise
00:08:21
actually is a promise is defined as a
00:08:24
declaration or assurance that one will
00:08:26
do a particular thing and that a
00:08:29
particular thing will happen so once you
00:08:32
understand what a promise actually is
00:08:34
you have to determine what do I have to
00:08:36
put in place in order to keep my word
00:08:39
making the Declaration and the promise
00:08:40
is just an audible act but there are
00:08:42
actions that are attached to it and
00:08:45
sometimes those actions require
00:08:46
sacrifices it requires prioritizing
00:08:50
rearranging sometimes it requires you to
00:08:52
walk away from things that have been
00:08:53
draining your time and to push yourself
00:08:56
in a way that you've never done before
00:08:58
if you don't count the ca of what it
00:09:00
takes to actually keep your promises
00:09:02
then you'll just keep talking talking
00:09:04
talking and never seeing any fruit so
00:09:06
let's give an example let's say you made
00:09:08
a promise to yourself that you were
00:09:09
going to get closer to God this year and
00:09:11
spend more time with him the first thing
00:09:14
that you have to do is to identify what
00:09:16
are the things that are preventing you
00:09:17
from doing this maybe you work a
00:09:19
demanding 9 to5 and you're struggling to
00:09:21
build a routine and every time you get
00:09:23
home you're exhausted and drained so now
00:09:25
that you've identified those barriers
00:09:27
now you have to say okay what do I need
00:09:29
to put in place so that I can keep this
00:09:31
promise to myself and to God that may
00:09:34
look like waking up earlier it may look
00:09:37
like staying up a little bit later at
00:09:39
night if the morning time is not for you
00:09:42
it may look like prioritizing your lunch
00:09:44
break and what you would be using to eat
00:09:46
maybe used to fast and dedicate to
00:09:48
spending more time with God it may look
00:09:50
like sacrificing your morning podcast to
00:09:52
drive in silence or listen to worship
00:09:54
music and pray to the Lord it may look
00:09:57
like using the time that you would
00:09:58
usually use to watch YouTube videos to
00:10:00
study your word there's always a
00:10:03
sacrifice when it comes to keeping a
00:10:04
promise to yourself and often that
00:10:06
sacrifice is time comfort and pleasure
00:10:10
again there's always a sacrifice when it
00:10:12
comes to keeping a promise that you've
00:10:13
made to yourself and usually those
00:10:16
sacrifices are time comfort and pleasure
00:10:19
for me personally I find a lot of
00:10:21
pleasure and comfort in watching YouTube
00:10:23
videos and keeping up with all of my
00:10:25
favorite vloggers but I didn't realize
00:10:26
how much time it was taking away from
00:10:29
things that I need to be executing in
00:10:30
this season sometimes you don't even
00:10:33
realize what's a distraction until it's
00:10:35
identified to you by the Lord and so
00:10:37
maybe you need to sit in prayer and say
00:10:39
God reveal to me what is distracting me
00:10:42
what is keeping me from keeping this
00:10:43
promise to myself and to showing up for
00:10:45
you now a lot of times honestly it may
00:10:48
be a heart issue again we make time for
00:10:51
the things that are important to us and
00:10:53
so we have to sometimes be honest and
00:10:56
say you know what Lord I have not been
00:10:58
AC like spending time with you is
00:11:01
important to me my actions show
00:11:03
otherwise my words are saying that you
00:11:05
know I want to spend time with you but
00:11:06
my actions are showing otherwise but
00:11:09
again that first step is really
00:11:11
identifying the things that are
00:11:13
preventing you from keeping your promise
00:11:14
and then putting a plan in place and you
00:11:17
do that with the Lord the Lord is full
00:11:19
of practical wisdom right for our
00:11:21
everyday lives and he will help you to
00:11:23
navigate around these barriers so that
00:11:25
you can move forward now the second part
00:11:27
of keeping promises to yourself is
00:11:29
actually committing again the scripture
00:11:31
says that talk is cheap we say things
00:11:34
all day and have no intention on doing
00:11:36
them but one of the way that you can
00:11:37
really start to keep the promises to
00:11:39
yourself is by number one verbally
00:11:41
committing and number two getting some
00:11:44
accountability when there is no one
00:11:46
holding you accountable for what you're
00:11:47
going to do especially if you have a
00:11:49
long history of breaking promises to
00:11:52
yourself you're probably going to stay
00:11:53
in that cycle for a very long time so
00:11:56
you have to do something different when
00:11:58
I'm working on on keeping promises to
00:12:00
myself one of the first things that I
00:12:01
will do is I will actually write down
00:12:03
what I'm going to do and I will add a
00:12:05
date to it by writing down that date of
00:12:08
when I say I'm going to get that thing
00:12:09
done it creates a sense of urgency in me
00:12:12
that I didn't have before because
00:12:14
sometimes lingering deadlines and just
00:12:16
kind of those blurry lines allow us to
00:12:18
make excuses and reason our way out of
00:12:20
doing something but when you begin to
00:12:22
set a date for something it creates this
00:12:24
urgency in your mind now for me I
00:12:27
usually go a step further and once I
00:12:29
have have a commitment a written and a
00:12:30
verbal commitment that I've made I will
00:12:33
often hold myself accountable by either
00:12:35
telling one of my trusted friends who I
00:12:37
know will be like girl what's going on
00:12:39
with that you said you were going to do
00:12:40
that and you didn't or sometimes I'll
00:12:42
make a public statement right I have
00:12:44
done this plenty of times when it comes
00:12:46
to launching programs books journals uh
00:12:49
things like the doers Community I will
00:12:51
tell people this is what I'm doing even
00:12:53
if I haven't done it yet that way I know
00:12:55
that there are other people anticipating
00:12:57
what I'm going to release now don't
00:12:59
recommend doing a public declaration as
00:13:01
a form of commitment if you are in the
00:13:03
beginning stages of doing this because
00:13:05
you might create unnecessary pressure
00:13:07
for yourself but I do recommend at least
00:13:10
getting an accountability partner that
00:13:11
can help you to move past those places
00:13:14
of procrastination And Delay even if
00:13:16
it's spending time with God maybe you
00:13:18
need a Bible study partner where you
00:13:20
guys carve out time in your week and you
00:13:22
meet consistently it is okay to have
00:13:25
help you do not have to do everything on
00:13:27
your own and if you really want want to
00:13:29
start keeping the promises to yourself
00:13:31
you will do whatever it takes you have
00:13:34
to have that mindset that I am going to
00:13:36
do whatever it takes I'm going to get
00:13:38
uncomfortable I'm going to get up
00:13:40
earlier I'm going to stay up later you
00:13:42
have to develop that or you're going to
00:13:44
be stuck again do not let your mouth
00:13:47
make you sin it is better to say nothing
00:13:49
at all than to make a promise that
00:13:51
you're not going to keep some of you may
00:13:53
even need to enter a silent season where
00:13:55
you just stop saying that you're going
00:13:57
to do things until you've done the last
00:13:59
thing that you said you were going to do
00:14:01
there's no need into making new goals
00:14:03
and setting all these bigger and bigger
00:14:04
Ambitions for yourself if you're not
00:14:06
going to do the last things that you
00:14:08
said you were going to do start simple
00:14:11
so I hope that this has been helpful for
00:14:13
you let's quickly recap everything that
00:14:15
we talked about how do we keep promises
00:14:17
to ourselves number one identify the
00:14:20
distractions and the obstacles that have
00:14:22
been preventing you from keeping that
00:14:24
promise once those things are identified
00:14:27
you can start to put a plan in place
00:14:30
number two make a commitment you can do
00:14:33
this audibly and written right when you
00:14:36
make a written commitment and you write
00:14:37
a date next to it it creates urgency and
00:14:40
you can go a step further by getting
00:14:41
some accountability this can either be
00:14:44
by telling people publicly what you're
00:14:45
doing or you can go tell a trusted
00:14:48
friend who you know will check up on you
00:14:50
and hold you accountable it is okay to
00:14:52
have help you do not have to do this
00:14:54
alone and the more you practice the
00:14:56
skill the easier it will be to keep the
00:14:58
commitments to yourself because you're
00:14:59
going to start seeing the fruit and let
00:15:02
me tell you something once you start
00:15:03
seeing the fruit of what happens when
00:15:05
you keep the commitments you make to
00:15:06
yourself and to God you're never going
00:15:08
to want to stop right now you probably
00:15:10
don't have a lot of motivation because
00:15:11
you're not seeing any fruit you're
00:15:13
feeling very discouraged and you're
00:15:14
focusing so much on the past that you
00:15:16
can't even see what's in the future for
00:15:18
you start simple follow the steps that
00:15:21
I've given you and partner with the Lord
00:15:23
in prayer and you will be able to keep
00:15:25
the promises that you make to yourself
00:15:27
and to others and you'll experience a
00:15:28
lot more joy and satisfaction because of
00:15:31
it so again I hope this has been helpful
00:15:33
let me know down in the comments what
00:15:35
area you've been struggling to keep
00:15:37
promises to yourself and what you're
00:15:38
going to do about it I love you all and
00:15:41
I'll talk to you on the next
