00:00:00
coming up my head becomes fashionable
00:00:02
let's talk about my hat for a minute we
00:00:05
smoke up the alpena
00:00:09
and the test drive ends well
00:00:11
we have a knock
00:00:14
[Music]
00:00:16
buenos dias and welcome to the seventh
00:00:18
installment of project chicago over the
00:00:20
last few episodes we fully rebuilt this
00:00:22
engine put it back in and then in the
00:00:24
previous one we started it it sounds
00:00:26
glorious it works glorious i'm happy
00:00:29
you're happy everybody's happy however
00:00:32
there is one slight issue the android
00:00:34
takes a bit longer now to start you
00:00:36
might have noticed the long crank thing
00:00:37
in the previous episode when the engine
00:00:39
was still warm and we replaced the oil
00:00:42
now we're gonna troubleshoot that and
00:00:43
once we figure it out we're gonna
00:00:44
prepare it for its first drive down the
00:00:47
autobahn the engine is brand new we need
00:00:50
to take it for a test drive see how it
00:00:51
feels break it in
00:00:53
and i'm actually quite excited for that
00:00:55
so
00:00:56
let's dive in all right my friends i've
00:00:58
been struggling like crazy to figure out
00:01:00
what the issue is with the car with the
00:01:02
long cranking and then eventually
00:01:03
starting
00:01:05
so it happens pretty much all the time
00:01:06
if the car sits overnight and i come in
00:01:08
the morning it's completely cold i press
00:01:10
the button it takes about five to ten
00:01:12
seconds for it to start and it's a
00:01:14
really rough start it sputters into life
00:01:16
and then it works perfectly fine
00:01:18
then if i try to restart it immediately
00:01:20
it starts brilliantly no issues
00:01:22
whatsoever starts within a second but if
00:01:24
i leave it to sit for about 15 minutes
00:01:26
or so and then try to press the button
00:01:28
same deal cranks for very long time and
00:01:30
then eventually starts so i started
00:01:32
suspecting something with the fuel
00:01:33
pressure so my first
00:01:35
task was to test the fuel pressure at
00:01:37
the rail there's a valve here so i
00:01:39
connected the fuel pressure gauge
00:01:41
and i can build fuel pressure with my
00:01:43
laptop 3.5 bar and according to bmw
00:01:46
repair manual it should stay around that
00:01:48
number for extended period of time and
00:01:50
if it drops below
00:01:52
more than 0.2 bar then we have an issue
00:01:55
and it did drop to about 2.8 within like
00:01:58
five minutes or so
00:01:59
so next thing i did is i clamped off
00:02:01
this feed hose here and this fuel rail
00:02:03
doesn't have a return so the return line
00:02:05
is actually in the fuel filter so i
00:02:07
clamped it off here and basically made a
00:02:09
closed circuit
00:02:11
and the fuel pressure would still drop
00:02:13
so that pretty much told me that we have
00:02:15
an issue here and most likely with the
00:02:17
fuel injectors so what i did now is
00:02:21
i removed bank two fuel rail
00:02:24
and i build fuel pressure with my laptop
00:02:26
3.5 bar
00:02:28
and then i wiped clean the tips of the
00:02:30
fuel injectors with a clean paper towel
00:02:33
and now if i take this dry paper towel
00:02:35
this i mean look at that you can already
00:02:37
see that they're dripping like crazy so
00:02:39
if i take this clean paper towel and i
00:02:41
put it on the tip of the fuel injector
00:02:44
they are leaking
00:02:47
all of them
00:02:49
every single one injector is leaking at
00:02:51
least on this rail here
00:02:53
so they are leaking ever so slightly not
00:02:56
a lot to the point where they will lock
00:02:58
up the engine thankfully but obviously
00:03:00
when the car sits for
00:03:02
20 minutes this is going to fill up the
00:03:04
combustion chamber and it's going to be
00:03:06
flooded and it's going to sputter until
00:03:08
it cleans up all of that and then
00:03:09
eventually starts and there is also a
00:03:11
small puff of smoke coming at the
00:03:13
exhaust that smells fuelish-like so this
00:03:16
is the issue the injectors that i sent
00:03:18
for cleaning were fine when they were
00:03:20
tested
00:03:21
but as the car was running i guess they
00:03:23
didn't like that cleaning and now
00:03:24
they're ruined because
00:03:26
evidently they are leaking to be honest
00:03:29
in the first place i'm not a big fan of
00:03:31
cleaning fuel injectors whenever i see
00:03:33
an opportunity to buy new ones for
00:03:35
example like on e31 new injectors are
00:03:38
350 euro for all 12 of them no brainer
00:03:41
buying brand new
00:03:43
on the e60 m5 all 10 injectors i bought
00:03:45
them brand new because also they didn't
00:03:46
want to mess around with cleaning i
00:03:48
think they were around 400 500 euro
00:03:50
original bosch buy a brand new done but
00:03:52
on this particular engine the main
00:03:54
reason why i sent the fuel injectors for
00:03:55
cleaning is i wanted to be sure that
00:03:57
they're good look it's leaking even
00:03:59
right now
00:04:00
that they're good that they're not gonna
00:04:01
not gonna do any damage to the brand new
00:04:03
engine
00:04:05
and brand new ones they cost 200 euros
00:04:08
each times eight one thousand six
00:04:10
hundred euro
00:04:11
so that's why i sent them for cleaning i
00:04:13
thought that's going to be better i'm
00:04:15
going to know that they're good i'm
00:04:16
going to have results and whatever and
00:04:17
obviously they worked fine on the first
00:04:19
start but as they started working more
00:04:21
and more on the second start i started
00:04:23
having issue with these so i'm going to
00:04:24
go and see what's the best price i can
00:04:26
get for these inductors now i'm going to
00:04:28
start pulling out the old injectors
00:04:35
pull up
00:04:38
there we are
00:04:42
say hello to brand new fuel injectors i
00:04:44
was wrong they're not 200 euros each
00:04:46
they're around 140.
00:04:48
and danielle from outer house malcolm's
00:04:50
again made me a nice offer and i paid
00:04:53
962 euros for eight of these which is
00:04:55
still absurdly expensive but what can
00:04:58
you do these are siemens fuel injectors
00:05:00
which i absolutely hate now and i did
00:05:02
try to find them as aftermarket oe
00:05:05
no dice these are alpina specific and
00:05:07
you can only get them from the dealer so
00:05:09
let's put them in and hopefully this
00:05:10
fixes our issue a little bit of
00:05:12
lubrication
00:05:15
very good
00:05:17
all right let's pop them in
00:05:20
okay
00:05:23
so now it's just a matter of putting
00:05:24
everything back together
00:05:26
all these wires and stuff all right now
00:05:28
we can fire up the laptop first we're
00:05:30
going to clear all the codes and then
00:05:31
we're going to reset the voltronic
00:05:33
adaptations continue
00:05:38
that's it now we're going to manually
00:05:40
run the fuel pump and you can build fuel
00:05:42
pressure
00:05:47
there it is
00:05:51
now we're going to start it again i'm
00:05:53
not sure if it's going to start properly
00:05:54
from the first try
00:05:56
because there's probably some residual
00:05:57
fuel in the cylinders
00:05:59
but let's see
00:06:08
all right it started a lot quicker
00:06:11
it was running a bit rough for a couple
00:06:13
of seconds
00:06:15
probably burning off all of that fuel
00:06:16
and
00:06:17
getting used to life again
00:06:21
so now i'm gonna let it run for a little
00:06:23
while
00:06:24
get it nice and warm then we're gonna
00:06:26
shut it down wait 20 minutes and then
00:06:28
try to start it again before it would
00:06:30
take five to ten seconds of cranking
00:06:32
before it starts but if now it starts
00:06:35
immediately then we know the tissue is
00:06:37
solved
00:06:38
alrighty it's been 25 minutes let's see
00:06:41
what it says now
00:06:45
oh yes
00:06:50
she's back
00:06:52
really nice by the way i'm never ever
00:06:55
again sending these modern newer type of
00:06:58
fuel injectors for cleaning they just
00:07:00
don't like it and thankfully we caught
00:07:02
this in time if i actually went for a
00:07:04
test drive with leaking injectors it
00:07:06
would destroy this brand new engine it
00:07:07
would wash out the cylinders score them
00:07:10
melt the pistons lock up the engine it
00:07:12
would just be
00:07:13
a huge disaster so it's just not worth
00:07:16
taking that risk it's a brand new day
00:07:19
let's hear that cold start
00:07:23
oh yes
00:07:25
that is a lovely cold start no smoke
00:07:29
just sounds good so the long crank issue
00:07:31
has officially been resolved also off
00:07:34
camera i replaced the oil because that
00:07:36
oil was contaminated with fuel from the
00:07:38
leaking injectors so we have fresh oil
00:07:40
in it
00:07:41
and now we're gonna do the front end of
00:07:43
the car
00:07:44
in this massive box
00:07:47
is the
00:07:49
shroud thing support
00:07:51
for the oil cooler
00:07:52
i had to wait two weeks to get this part
00:07:55
150 bucks
00:07:57
well european shillings fancy piece of
00:08:00
plastic of course he has stamped alpina
00:08:02
on the side just so you know it's for
00:08:03
the alpena is there anything else in
00:08:05
there
00:08:06
chocolate maybe
00:08:08
now
00:08:10
surely this is going to be fun surely
00:08:12
let's start by removing this thing here
00:08:16
[Applause]
00:08:19
i think
00:08:20
i'm not going to have to remove the
00:08:21
intercooler because if i do
00:08:23
i'm going to lose it
00:08:35
whoa we'll need to disconnect the
00:08:38
power string cooler it looks kind of
00:08:41
well not pretty and i didn't want to buy
00:08:43
a new one but of course it's alpina
00:08:45
specific and it cost million euros so i
00:08:47
didn't
00:08:49
plug it plug it plug it quickly
00:08:51
yes
00:08:55
i think we should be able to swing it
00:08:56
out of the way now
00:09:03
how do we get to you sir well shy seman
00:09:07
okay bros if we're going to remove the
00:09:08
headlight
00:09:14
oh yeah
00:09:17
thank you for loosing this clamp here i
00:09:18
might be able to pull it ever so
00:09:20
slightly
00:09:23
yes
00:09:25
that's all of the screws on this side
00:09:28
see
00:09:29
completamente loose
00:09:33
did i i did miss one more
00:09:37
ah that's all the screws removed
00:09:40
oh
00:09:44
expertly done
00:09:48
lovely so that's what's left of the old
00:09:51
bracketry
00:09:54
here's the one
00:09:56
slide in the condenser
00:09:58
why no sliding action
00:10:01
all right i'll be
00:10:02
back i'll need to shave that off perfect
00:10:06
a few filing moments later
00:10:09
do we have fitment now
00:10:11
i am not in the mood for more filing fit
00:10:14
i know we'll use force
00:10:16
there you go that's fitment
00:10:20
i need three hands now
00:10:29
slide
00:10:31
yes look at that it fits
00:10:38
oh i see they didn't leave holes here
00:10:41
what
00:10:43
they didn't drill the holes here well
00:10:44
there you have it you pay 150 european
00:10:47
shillings for a piece of plastic from
00:10:48
lupina and i can't even bother to drill
00:10:51
the holes here i mean what's up with
00:10:52
that that's worth at least 20 euros off
00:10:55
anyway
00:10:57
all right let's see
00:10:58
how the cooler attaches now
00:11:02
it appears we need bolts
00:11:05
well that's bigger than 10 what
00:11:07
it's 11.
00:11:10
i think i ever used 11 socket in my life
00:11:13
beautiful
00:11:15
that's
00:11:16
lovely and firmly in place
00:11:22
that's clean
00:11:23
so now i need to drill some holes
00:11:25
because alpena oh no my drill can't
00:11:28
reach so i'm going to use a self tapper
00:11:30
to get the hole going
00:11:33
and that's both of them in place
00:11:40
time to reinstall the headlight and
00:11:42
we're going to be back here
00:11:44
in the next episode
00:11:46
because we got to install brand new
00:11:47
european headlights then we'll do a spot
00:11:49
of cleaning as well of course
00:11:53
front bumper support i'm gonna remember
00:11:56
where what goes where does what's that i
00:11:58
think this contraption goes in first
00:12:02
i don't remember it was
00:12:04
many moons ago
00:12:06
okay
00:12:13
rip the glove
00:12:14
you piece of
00:12:16
engineering marvel
00:12:18
oh
00:12:20
i'm missing the thing here where is it
00:12:22
ha found it
00:12:26
i was wondering where that goes
00:12:29
oh what a fitment this is
00:12:32
[Music]
00:12:34
okay what's
00:12:35
what's going on
00:12:37
let's just do that later
00:12:39
oh i see
00:12:43
wrong goal oh the headlight really
00:12:45
should be removed for this
00:12:47
but force will do
00:12:50
look at that actually esperante so this
00:12:53
needs to go in here yes a little bit of
00:12:57
kungfu fighting
00:13:00
give it a nice twist
00:13:05
there are these covers and couple of
00:13:07
more bolts that go in the back we're
00:13:09
gonna do that later because the
00:13:11
headlights and the bumper need to come
00:13:12
out anyway in the next episode so i'm
00:13:14
not gonna bother with that now
00:13:18
it's through nice it had like washers
00:13:26
that's the front bumper carrier
00:13:28
installed
00:13:29
so
00:13:32
sure
00:13:33
i'll take sausage thank you very much
00:13:35
deliciously crispy alpena bumper going
00:13:38
back but hey it's not cracked anywhere
00:13:41
on the inside it hasn't been patched or
00:13:42
anything like that
00:13:46
oh no
00:13:53
swipe bolts here
00:14:04
and just like that it has a face again
00:14:07
i'm gonna quickly throw in the brake
00:14:08
ducting
00:14:14
all right with that now i can start
00:14:16
doing the suspension suspension time if
00:14:18
you remember from the inspection video
00:14:20
lower control arms in the front are shot
00:14:22
both control arms in the back are shot
00:14:23
as well ball joints have a ton of play
00:14:25
sway bar links are shot and well added
00:14:27
we're gonna do sway bar bushings and
00:14:29
these are all oe lanforda parts made in
00:14:32
deutschland
00:14:37
so you need magic beans to open the
00:14:40
wheel caps
00:14:42
now you need a la javis to do that
00:14:50
[Music]
00:14:52
the tires are brand new the only
00:14:54
annoying thing is the front are
00:14:55
continental and the back is michelin
00:14:58
[Applause]
00:15:08
we're going to start with the control
00:15:09
arms first
00:15:10
first the bulging
00:15:13
breaker bar
00:15:27
the bushing side is already loose
00:15:29
i did that when we were removing the
00:15:31
subframe
00:15:35
so the bulge is not that great either so
00:15:38
the bushing is completely shot most
00:15:40
likely original control arm this is how
00:15:43
a fresh ball joint should be
00:15:46
nice and firm
00:15:59
so the bushing bolt as always just
00:16:01
finger tight
00:16:03
then we're going to lower the car on the
00:16:05
ground drive it back and forth and do
00:16:07
the final torque if you torque it all
00:16:09
the way now
00:16:10
this pushing is gonna twist when you
00:16:12
lower the suspension down and it's gonna
00:16:14
wear out really quickly
00:16:17
so no matter what car
00:16:19
what brand if you're dealing with rubber
00:16:21
bushings always fork
00:16:23
with the car on the ground
00:16:32
now we can unbolt the sway bar
00:16:38
not great but not too bad
00:16:41
and on the other side the boot is torn
00:16:49
pay attention there's l stamped on the
00:16:51
sway bar length as in left
00:16:56
so the torque spec is 20 millimeters and
00:16:58
then 90 degree angle
00:17:00
never seen that on a sway bar link
00:17:02
before
00:17:03
but that's what the repair manual says
00:17:05
and that's what shall we do
00:17:12
now we're going to do the sway bar
00:17:13
bushings
00:17:18
and this car has dynamic drive which
00:17:20
means active sway bar
00:17:23
pretty cool stuff
00:17:31
ah
00:17:32
that's the bracket removed
00:17:35
and now i can remove the bushing this is
00:17:37
a bearing
00:17:38
oh it doesn't feel too bad there are
00:17:40
pair manual sets to keep everything
00:17:43
oil and grease free
00:17:46
clean the bracket as well
00:17:49
new bushing
00:18:17
and that's the left side done
00:18:19
this control arm was replaced by someone
00:18:23
and it looks good the bushing is good
00:18:25
here the ball joint is good
00:18:27
the tie rods they have no place so i'm
00:18:29
going to leave that b as well
00:18:31
and now we're going to copy paste on the
00:18:33
other side so we're going to replace the
00:18:34
zip tie here
00:18:36
with a proper clamp
00:18:38
and we did check the steam rack
00:18:41
it didn't have any leaks
00:18:43
and it doesn't residual stuff that drips
00:18:45
from above give it a little bit more
00:18:47
grease there
00:18:55
it's nice and firmly in place
00:18:58
all right reinstall both of the caps
00:19:00
that we're missing here on the brake
00:19:01
calipers
00:19:11
and that's this side done as well
00:19:18
we'll torque the front bushings later
00:19:20
now we're going to do the rear control
00:19:21
arms
00:19:23
[Applause]
00:19:26
so i just checked in order to replace
00:19:28
the research bar bushings you need to
00:19:29
drop the entire subframe
00:19:31
so we're not gonna do that the bushings
00:19:33
don't even look that bad so there you
00:19:35
have it alpena springs are actually
00:19:36
eibach springs
00:19:39
so this is the guide link also used for
00:19:41
alignment so we need to mark that bolt
00:19:43
over there the ball joint is completely
00:19:45
shot the rubber is just gone
00:19:48
and then this one here as well
00:19:50
so let's first start with the bigger one
00:20:02
and unclip
00:20:04
the wiring here
00:20:09
i'm going to undo the ball joint
00:20:14
[Applause]
00:20:15
i'm spinning the ball joint
00:20:18
which you shouldn't do if you're using
00:20:19
said ball joint but
00:20:21
you're replacing the whole thing
00:20:24
and this is faster
00:20:28
now the bolt should come out easily
00:20:31
and it sure
00:20:32
does
00:20:34
so that's one control arm out
00:20:37
and this ball joint
00:20:39
had a ton of play here's a new one i
00:20:41
also transferred the plastic bracket
00:20:44
and now we can install it
00:20:48
now you're going to hold the ball joint
00:20:49
stop it from spinning
00:20:51
and slowly
00:20:53
do up the nut
00:20:57
165 and for the bushing side
00:21:00
finger tight and final torque with the
00:21:02
car on the ground
00:21:04
so this here is an eccentric millionaire
00:21:06
eccentric bolt
00:21:08
used for alignment
00:21:11
so we're going to clean it and mark its
00:21:12
position so we can put it back exactly
00:21:14
where it was the car is going to get
00:21:16
alignment regardless but we need to get
00:21:18
it
00:21:19
back to where it was otherwise it's
00:21:20
going to drive all over the place and
00:21:22
you won't be able to drive it to the
00:21:24
alignment shop let alone the test drive
00:21:40
um
00:21:45
don't forget about the washer
00:21:48
nice and short
00:21:57
so i can use my chicken foot extension
00:21:59
here
00:22:01
and torque the bulge into spec
00:22:06
torqued now i'm going to do the sway bar
00:22:08
link
00:22:18
the rubber is starting to separate on
00:22:19
this one the locking clip is gone
00:22:23
so these wouldn't last long anyway but
00:22:25
these are beefy swear by links
00:22:36
good that's this side done
00:22:38
the brakes are actually good at least
00:22:40
the disc we just need to drive it and
00:22:42
clean up the surface rust the pads are
00:22:44
low though
00:22:45
and if i measure the disc
00:22:50
so maximum thickness is 24
00:22:52
millimeters this one is
00:22:55
slightly below 24 23 and a half
00:22:59
and minimum is 22.4 so the disc is good
00:23:03
and i'm going to order some new pads and
00:23:05
we're going to install that in the next
00:23:06
episode
00:23:15
now we're going to drive it back and
00:23:16
forth for the suspension to settle and
00:23:18
then torque the bushings
00:23:20
let's hear that cold start again
00:23:36
[Music]
00:23:38
so the thrust control arm bushings are
00:23:40
torqued to 100 meters and then 90 degree
00:23:42
angle unfortunately a torque wrench
00:23:45
can't fit in here you're always supposed
00:23:48
to torque by the nut and knot is on this
00:23:50
side and because of the sway bar and the
00:23:51
subframe there's no chance you can fit a
00:23:53
torque wrench here not even my digital
00:23:55
one so i'm gonna go by hand and just get
00:23:58
it as tight as i can
00:24:00
so nice and
00:24:02
tight like that
00:24:09
that should do it
00:24:16
my angle torque wrench keeps giving me
00:24:18
an error too much torque for it so we
00:24:20
got to do that by hand so now we're
00:24:21
going to do a 90 degree angle plus minus
00:24:23
15. so something
00:24:25
till end of the
00:24:27
lift there
00:24:37
that should do it
00:24:38
around 90.
00:24:48
perfect so my digital torque wrench only
00:24:51
goes up to 100 so i'm gonna try 95 and
00:24:54
then i'll do
00:24:56
one more twist by hand
00:25:00
that was 95
00:25:05
that should do it
00:25:07
now the guide link
00:25:09
we need to line up the bolt with our
00:25:11
marks
00:25:18
that's everything torqued and we are
00:25:20
done with the suspension now let's take
00:25:22
this party outside
00:25:40
you can almost taste the power i just
00:25:42
want to drive it a little bit just to
00:25:43
make sure
00:25:45
there are no knocking sounds or anything
00:25:47
unusual and that we can actually drive
00:25:49
this car
00:25:50
on the street
00:25:57
yeah suspension feels good
00:26:01
project chicago is clean for the first
00:26:03
time in my ownership
00:26:06
from afar it doesn't look too bad but
00:26:08
you come up close and
00:26:10
since it's all nice and clean let's talk
00:26:12
about the exterior
00:26:13
body condition wise it's not too bad no
00:26:16
major damage but from detailing
00:26:18
perspective it's horrible it's like
00:26:20
someone washed this car with rocks
00:26:22
there's scratches and swirls all over
00:26:24
the place i mean look at that
00:26:26
the hood as well it's horrible and the
00:26:29
paint is mostly original mine is the
00:26:31
hood and that needs to be wet sanded and
00:26:33
polished because the finish is a bit
00:26:35
orange peely that rear door over there
00:26:37
has been repainted
00:26:39
and i don't know if you can tell on the
00:26:40
camera but the finish is slightly off
00:26:42
and i think that's mainly due to the
00:26:44
fact that that's old original paint and
00:26:45
that's new so with paint correction
00:26:47
hopefully that will match up if not it's
00:26:49
going to drive me nuts
00:26:51
the rims in horrible state i'm going to
00:26:53
have them refinished the smear it's
00:26:55
after market which means it doesn't have
00:26:57
the power folding function the heating
00:26:59
and electrochrome but most importantly
00:27:02
this base should be glossy black like
00:27:04
the rest of the trim so i bought one in
00:27:07
poland i'm waiting for that to come in a
00:27:09
couple of days and hopefully it'll work
00:27:11
out because it's from a right-hand drive
00:27:12
car minor scratches everywhere most of
00:27:15
that will come out because it's not too
00:27:17
deep unfortunately this one here is too
00:27:19
deep and that's going to come out about
00:27:22
90 so it's not gonna be too bad we need
00:27:24
pdr
00:27:25
there's slight damage here hopefully it
00:27:27
can be pulled out taillights
00:27:29
horrible state we're gonna replace that
00:27:31
this one is cracked low on blinker fluid
00:27:33
the rear bumper unfortunately has three
00:27:36
massive dents here here and here
00:27:40
the rest of it it's not in too bad of a
00:27:42
shape but i think i'm gonna have that
00:27:43
repainted as well
00:27:45
this side it's pretty much the same
00:27:46
story as the other one needs pdr and
00:27:49
paid correction but it's all original
00:27:51
paint and look at this hood
00:27:54
man boys from geon are gonna have their
00:27:56
work cut out with this car and it's a
00:27:58
massive car it's gonna take an insane
00:28:00
amount of hours to polish it headlights
00:28:02
we're going to replace that in the next
00:28:03
episode oh the front bumper was
00:28:05
repainted as well but you can't really
00:28:07
tell that unless you taste it
00:28:09
the grilles we're going to replace that
00:28:11
in the next episode as well
00:28:13
and the front end does look cool with
00:28:14
the alpina lip over there well bumper
00:28:17
and you can see all of the coolers there
00:28:19
and stuff that looks pretty cool
00:28:20
exterior just needs a good cleaning
00:28:23
the steering wheel is going to be
00:28:24
refinished by alpena back to original
00:28:26
condition 359 euro i hate this steering
00:28:30
wheel so much it's the ugliest steering
00:28:32
wheel the bmw ever made but that's what
00:28:34
this car originally came with i'm still
00:28:36
looking for a nice set of wood trim for
00:28:39
the interior and this pickup stock here
00:28:41
needs to be replaced but otherwise nice
00:28:44
interior
00:28:46
let's talk about my hat for a minute
00:28:48
i mean tint i think i already mentioned
00:28:51
this but i don't like tint
00:28:53
unless it's some really light subtle
00:28:54
tint that actually improves the look of
00:28:56
the car i can be on board with that but
00:28:59
the whole gangsta like i'm trying to
00:29:01
hide something look just doesn't work
00:29:03
for me i know this is very much a matter
00:29:05
of personal taste but with hint also
00:29:07
comes functionality so if you live in
00:29:09
las vegas dubai or texas where this car
00:29:12
used to live you need to have the tint
00:29:15
otherwise you and the interior are just
00:29:16
going to cook but we're no longer in
00:29:18
texas we're in frankfurt germany and
00:29:20
here with such tinted car you look like
00:29:23
a pimp
00:29:24
so he needs to go not to mention that in
00:29:26
germany you're not allowed to have any
00:29:28
sort of tint on the front windows it's
00:29:30
illegal on the rear windows you can have
00:29:32
it but i think you need some sort of
00:29:34
approvals and certificates or whatever i
00:29:36
have none of that besides there's
00:29:38
electric shades all over the place so we
00:29:40
don't need it
00:29:41
now we're going to start the the pimping
00:29:42
process
00:29:44
not looking forward to that i've done it
00:29:45
a couple of times in the past and it's
00:29:47
always a pain but let's see how it goes
00:29:49
oh and the hat bought that on my trip
00:29:52
inside of france centro pay 12 european
00:29:55
shillings
00:29:56
turns out there is something cheap over
00:29:58
there so we're gonna hit it with some
00:29:59
steam
00:30:00
see what happens
00:30:02
oh that's hot
00:30:11
oh i think this is gonna work
00:30:24
it's actually coming off nicely
00:30:29
it's not leaving glue residue behind
00:30:32
like that
00:30:57
not too bad
00:30:59
a little bit of adhesive
00:31:01
state
00:31:03
but i think if i hit it with the steamer
00:31:07
yeah
00:31:09
comes right off
00:31:12
so this is actually not going too bad
00:31:24
again i know it's a matter of personal
00:31:26
taste but this looks so much better to
00:31:28
me looks really classy now
00:31:32
[Applause]
00:31:41
now the main party piece the rear window
00:31:49
i think i need to open the door as well
00:31:51
there
00:31:56
[Music]
00:32:26
um
00:32:34
[Music]
00:32:42
[Applause] [Music]
00:32:46
[Applause]
00:32:50
[Music]
00:32:54
yes officially dark but all of the foil
00:32:57
is removed i can highly recommend using
00:33:00
this good steam machine for removing the
00:33:02
tint just heat it up real good and start
00:33:05
pulling off and even if some glue is
00:33:06
left behind just point at it
00:33:09
like that
00:33:10
and then just wipe it off it's easy as
00:33:12
that in the past i used acetone and that
00:33:15
does work but it's really messy and you
00:33:17
have to be careful not to drip on any of
00:33:19
the trim but this is water it just
00:33:21
evaporates in the end
00:33:23
job lovely done
00:33:25
now you're gonna reassemble the rest of
00:33:26
the engine bay there's a lot of trim
00:33:28
that goes over there but before i forget
00:33:30
we need to replace the supercharger belt
00:33:33
this one is not looking very good and i
00:33:35
bought a brand new one
00:33:40
original alpena continental belt
00:33:47
that's the belt installed now we have
00:33:49
plastic covers which i just cleaned
00:33:54
i can reassemble the entire engine but
00:33:56
let's struggle with the cover
00:33:58
ah this rubber gasket
00:34:01
this thing can go in
00:34:08
cabin air filter is going in and the
00:34:09
filters are
00:34:10
pretty much brand new
00:34:18
and now the beauty cover which cleaned
00:34:20
up lovely
00:34:25
finally we can get rid of the stick
00:34:27
brand new hood shocks
00:34:36
wait a minute coco
00:34:46
lovely and that's the engine bay
00:34:48
completely reassembled let's go
00:34:49
underneath now so this car came to me
00:34:51
without the bottom engine cover the
00:34:54
under tray and in my opinion that's one
00:34:55
of the most important things to have on
00:34:57
this car because if you don't have it
00:34:59
the aerodynamics are going to suffer
00:35:00
it's also good for protection because
00:35:02
when you're doing 300 kilometers per
00:35:04
hour on the autobahn all of the rocks
00:35:06
and dirt and stuff which is going to be
00:35:07
hitting the bottom of the engine and
00:35:08
that's not good thankful and
00:35:10
surprisingly this wasn't that expensive
00:35:12
150 euros from the dealer just a piece
00:35:15
of plastic i also bought that lip that
00:35:17
goes somewhere in the front
00:35:18
and then the transmission cover we
00:35:20
already have that all right
00:35:33
nice
00:35:35
so a bracket goes here
00:35:42
so this is alpena transmission cover
00:35:45
because
00:35:46
we have
00:35:48
cooling fins in the transmission alpena
00:35:50
cut the hole
00:35:51
in this cover
00:35:53
i think normal
00:35:55
745i or 750i
00:35:58
has all of this covered
00:36:01
the bottom end is buttoned up as well we
00:36:03
have this lovely lip that's going to
00:36:05
scrape everywhere but it's some sort of
00:36:06
rubber so it should be fine
00:36:08
the engine cover
00:36:10
firmly in place
00:36:11
transmission surrounding and all the
00:36:12
wires tucked in
00:36:14
so when we come back from our test drive
00:36:16
we're going to remove all of this and
00:36:18
see how many thousands of leaks we have
00:36:20
but with that we are ready to hit the
00:36:22
autobahn guten tag
00:36:26
it's test drive time
00:36:32
starts lovely so i checked the tire
00:36:34
pressure it was low because the car was
00:36:36
sitting forever
00:36:37
checked all of the bodily fluids we're
00:36:39
good there
00:36:42
and we're off
00:36:43
128
00:36:46
369
00:36:48
miles so i'm hoping to do around
00:36:52
100 kilometers or so so 60 miles we'll
00:36:54
see how it goes first stop go go juice
00:36:57
ride comfort
00:37:02
21-inch tires
00:37:04
we're not gonna have much of that
00:37:06
you're gonna go for 102. i'll be right
00:37:08
back i've got some fishermen
00:37:11
go go juice says service minus 40 miles
00:37:14
oh no
00:37:15
it's a dog over there
00:37:18
he likes the alpena i think
00:37:24
so this is a particularly bad road let's
00:37:26
see
00:37:27
suspension
00:37:34
not too bad definitely softer than the
00:37:37
e60 m5
00:37:39
are you know what i'm most likely gonna
00:37:41
end up replacing
00:37:43
shocks on this car as well
00:37:45
you saw how worn they were on the e60
00:37:50
yeah
00:37:52
and the thing that i like about the e60
00:37:53
m5 now is it literally drives like a
00:37:56
brand new car the suspension the engine
00:38:00
everything it just feels like a brand
00:38:01
new car and i love that about it and i
00:38:03
want the same for this car so i have to
00:38:05
check the price and we're most likely
00:38:06
gonna go with the original can i want it
00:38:08
to feel like you did
00:38:09
back in the day and this is literally
00:38:12
the first time i'm driving this car on
00:38:14
the road
00:38:16
oh
00:38:17
yeah we're gonna need shocks or maybe
00:38:19
it's just the big
00:38:20
wheels i'm not used to it 21 inch i've
00:38:22
never had a car with such big wheels
00:38:24
you know you're gonna get that pimp
00:38:26
experience somehow
00:38:27
we have no ac
00:38:29
and the blower fan is not working
00:38:32
something is broken there
00:38:38
the power it's there i barely touch the
00:38:40
throttle and it pulls
00:38:45
and see when in the e6005 when it hit
00:38:47
potholes and stuff it just absorbs them
00:38:49
so nicely
00:38:50
and the acoustic and everything you
00:38:52
can't even hear it in the car it's just
00:38:54
a nice thud and here it's a bit crashy
00:38:58
don't like it
00:39:02
yeah it should be absorbing these bumps
00:39:04
a lot better in my mind
00:39:06
that's 80 according to speedo 76 over
00:39:09
there
00:39:11
so
00:39:12
correct really comfortable seat
00:39:15
same seats as in the e60 m5 and they're
00:39:17
just the most glorious seats ever
00:39:20
so so comfortable
00:39:26
so we're gonna keep it around 4000 rpm
00:39:37
first time on the autobahn
00:39:40
150
00:39:42
comfortable cruising this is so far
00:39:46
that mirror is pissing me off already
00:39:48
it's an aftermarket mirror has already
00:39:50
said that it's
00:39:52
shaking pretty violently
00:39:54
all right we've done five miles so far
00:39:56
so it survived five kilometers feels
00:39:58
stable
00:40:00
steering wheel is not shaking it's
00:40:03
semi-straight not exactly straight but
00:40:05
it needs wheel alignment
00:40:07
i mean i like it
00:40:09
so i'm only doing like a little bit of
00:40:10
throttle but the wind noise it's
00:40:14
i would expect it to be
00:40:16
quieter than the e60 maybe again the
00:40:18
sunroof oh yeah
00:40:20
i hate sunroofs listen to that
00:40:30
stupid sunroof so we'll replace the seal
00:40:33
but
00:40:34
on the e60 m5 when i replace the seal it
00:40:37
helps a little bit but you can still
00:40:38
hear it and that's kind of inevitable
00:40:41
with the sunroof for example my e39 m5
00:40:43
that's a slick top less wind noise than
00:40:46
the e60
00:40:48
when you're driving 240 or whatever you
00:40:50
know the normal speeds coolant temp is
00:40:52
at 92 degrees celsius which is lovely
00:40:55
our custom thermostat from yarax is
00:40:58
working perfectly
00:41:00
ah it's a shame i can't do a kick down
00:41:02
this thing would probably fly
00:41:07
but you know what nothing is rattling
00:41:08
inside it's a really quiet ride
00:41:11
it's a small bus from something here
00:41:14
stop it the third signal stock on d60
00:41:17
and e65 is actually not too bad once you
00:41:19
get used to it the only gripe that i
00:41:21
have with it when you're driving really
00:41:23
fast on the autobahn
00:41:25
and you don't have time to look down to
00:41:27
see if the turn signal is
00:41:29
actually on or off and this doesn't
00:41:31
really give you that good precise feel
00:41:34
to know if it's on and off
00:41:37
i don't know what it is on the newer
00:41:38
bmws but
00:41:39
that's the
00:41:41
big flaw
00:41:42
if you live on the other one because you
00:41:43
can't
00:41:44
you really have time to look down when
00:41:46
you're driving 300 kilometers per hour
00:41:48
you know what i mean i think we're gonna
00:41:50
take some b roads now
00:42:03
25 miles in so far so good
00:42:07
[Music]
00:42:09
oh it pulls
00:42:12
uh i can't wait to fully break in this
00:42:14
thing
00:42:16
can you ever take this peugeot
00:42:19
sure we can
00:42:21
so go down to 30.
00:42:24
because these small towns and stuff they
00:42:26
love to put cameras
00:42:29
on every corner
00:42:36
transmission works
00:42:39
i think i was here with the e46 when i
00:42:41
went on a test drive for the first time
00:42:45
oh
00:42:46
jeremy clarkson hello there fella i mean
00:42:49
the suspension it's it's not too bad
00:42:52
it's not like horribly bad
00:42:55
it's just i would expect it to absorb
00:42:57
bumps a lot smoother and nicer
00:43:00
but i think my expectations might be
00:43:02
wrong because it's 21 inch wheels
00:43:05
and sporty suspension tuned by the
00:43:07
alpena paired with eibach springs
00:43:14
see what i mean
00:43:15
it should absorb that
00:43:17
nicely
00:43:19
that was harsh
00:43:22
i don't like harsh ride
00:43:27
tiny bridge
00:43:41
corner
00:43:43
man this thing is stable
00:43:52
wow actually really impressed
00:43:56
really impressed you know i was thinking
00:43:58
about selling this car once it's fully
00:44:00
done but
00:44:03
i don't know i'm starting to like it
00:44:12
i'm going to pull over here i just want
00:44:14
to hear the engine
00:44:16
all right let's see what the engine
00:44:18
sounds like
00:44:19
handbrake does that
00:44:20
work yes
00:44:23
oh it's quiet
00:44:25
it's really quiet
00:44:43
the mighty alpina b7 is alive she's been
00:44:46
in texas in chicago
00:44:49
and now in beautiful german countryside
00:44:54
it's beautiful day
00:44:59
something is buzzing here and it's
00:45:01
driving me nuts
00:45:04
what is it
00:45:08
stop it
00:45:10
it's absolutely driving me nuts whatever
00:45:13
that is
00:45:22
beautiful road
00:45:43
it's unbelievable how
00:45:46
such a heavy car handles so well
00:46:11
man what a road
00:46:15
so we are 47 miles in
00:46:18
so we don't want to be too gentle on
00:46:20
this engine either
00:46:21
you gotta get used to it to revving and
00:46:26
driving fast on the autobahn
00:46:30
i mean look at these roads
00:46:34
oh i'm thoroughly enjoying this ride oh
00:46:37
use the car a lot
00:46:39
i think interesting e39 we 38.
00:46:42
quad exhaust
00:46:44
is that a camera of course it is
00:46:55
rocket
00:47:15
beautiful day
00:47:17
beautiful day
00:47:20
beautiful weather beautiful scenery
00:47:22
beautiful good working car we recovered
00:47:25
61.7
00:47:27
miles so far
00:47:29
so around 100 kilometers
00:47:31
and it still works
00:47:35
overtaking is a breeze
00:47:38
back on the autobahn
00:47:50
all right we're gonna slowly start
00:47:51
heading back
00:47:52
we covered
00:47:54
70 miles
00:48:21
oh oh
00:48:28
we have a knock
00:48:34
this is not good
00:48:39
oh
00:48:41
we are knocking
00:48:57
yes i am oh it's so nice
00:49:00
i watch every video from you thank you
00:49:06
thanks for watching the videos yes
00:49:09
i wish you very luck
00:49:11
thank you
00:49:12
thank you have a nice day you too bye
00:49:17
so unfortunately the numes are very grim
00:49:21
something is not happy in the engine
00:49:26
sounds like
00:49:27
like chain to be honest
00:49:35
and when you give it gas
00:49:45
or rodnock
00:49:50
either way i can't drive it anymore
00:49:57
so much for the test drive
00:50:02
yes i'm gonna call a tow truck now spawn
00:50:04
bearing
00:50:06
could be
00:50:07
could where will be how's oil
00:50:10
and it looks clean
00:50:14
so that went really well
00:50:18
really dead
00:50:19
oil level is perfect coolant is good
00:50:23
so when i pulled over earlier to take
00:50:24
pictures nothing was knocking
00:50:27
but now on the
00:50:29
the autobahn started to knock
00:50:39
and on that massive disappointment we're
00:50:41
gonna end the video here
00:50:43
i gotta wait for a tow truck
00:50:45
i'm about 50 kilometers away from the
00:50:47
workshop
00:50:48
then we're gonna put it on the lift and
00:50:50
see what's going on
00:50:52
my guess it's not not looking good
00:50:56
as always thank you very much for
00:50:57
watching and i'll see you next time
00:51:05
[Applause]
00:51:23
you
