Description:

Rare giant squirrel mating ritual caught in camera. Two Malabar giant squirrels fight before mating in Western Ghats, Dandeli, Karnataka. How to persuade a female to mate in less than an hour??? See the video footage of 10mnts which captures almost an hour activity. Malabar giant squirrel, one of the largest squirrels, is a large tree squirrel species endemic to forests and woodlands in India. They are endemic to India, with main sections of its distribution in the Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats and Satpura Range. They are upper-canopy dwelling species, which rarely leaves the trees, and requires "tall profusely branched trees for the construction of nests. They are typically solitary animals that only come together for breeding. The species is believed to play a substantial role in shaping the ecosystem of its habitat by engaging in seed dispersal. Diet includes fruit, flowers, nuts and tree bark. Some subspecies are omnivorous, also eating insects and bird eggs. While in the forests of Western Ghats, I came across a couple who were foraging and resting on tree canopy. Later I observed them in courtship action and mating ritual for a long time. Typically solitary animals and only come together for breeding. Males are overly aggressive during the breeding period and will use all of appearance, persistence, appeasement, persuasion are at work. The courtship is all about fight, bite and finally mate. Mating partner need to prove a lot before the acceptance. Courtship display, animal behaviours involving mating rituals are a delight to watch. They flourish in the Indian forest regions. Main predator is Leopard and even birds of prey like Owls.
