You Can't Hide what you did I'm coming
00:00:03
for you go to horny jail BK seriously
00:00:07
though this is one of the most fun
00:00:08
interactions I've had on the dead bird
00:00:10
platform there is an artist by the name
00:00:12
of iron Lily who draws sort of Anime
00:00:15
styled characters with exceptionally
00:00:17
realistic historically accurate armor
00:00:19
I'm going to be linking the page in the
00:00:21
description below check it out not
00:00:22
sponsored by the way and I've also asked
00:00:24
for permission to show these pictures in
00:00:27
this video because I think it's more
00:00:29
important than ever to respect artists
00:00:32
and credit them appropriately in what I
00:00:34
consider basically the age of
00:00:36
industrialized art theft all right so
00:00:38
onto the spicy bits it's a meme post
00:00:41
about the whole armor plus nudity Trope
00:00:45
in fantasy it's very Tastefully done you
00:00:47
can tell that there's some nudity
00:00:50
supposedly unless there's stickers on
00:00:52
the nips or whatever which in my book
00:00:54
doesn't really make a significant
00:00:55
difference anyway when I first saw this
00:00:57
um I had conf conflicting emotions let's
00:01:01
put it that way and this was my
00:01:05
response and the best thing was the
00:01:08
response to that this cracked me up good
00:01:11
when I first saw it well played what
00:01:14
exactly are we talking about here what's
00:01:17
the problem or is there a problem
00:01:20
obviously not and generally I want
00:01:22
artists to create whatever they feel
00:01:24
like if it doesn't happen to be my thing
00:01:26
I don't have to look at it either way I
00:01:28
like this art it's very well drawn with
00:01:31
a lot of skill behind it obviously
00:01:33
plenty of detail I have somewhat mixed
00:01:35
feelings about the art style faces
00:01:38
because they look awfully young but on
00:01:41
the other hand there's something about
00:01:43
the contrast between this cified art
00:01:47
style and then the highly realistic arms
00:01:49
and armor I don't think I've seen it
00:01:51
quite like that before that all being
00:01:53
said it's overthinking time all right so
00:01:56
partial armor the entire torso is
00:01:59
uncovered covered and the question being
00:02:02
raised here is how big of a deal is that
00:02:05
really if the rest is armored and you
00:02:08
know with a certain stance you don't
00:02:10
really expose that all that much because
00:02:13
you know you're showing your side mainly
00:02:15
you're showing your armored Limbs and
00:02:18
all that and of course the opponent has
00:02:20
to deal with a pole arm which is not
00:02:23
that easy anyway and regardless of how
00:02:25
serious the argument is meant even if
00:02:27
it's just a meme post for fun I can
00:02:29
respect the attempt to justify this um
00:02:32
how well does the justification work
00:02:34
well we can think about it in terms of
00:02:37
anything is better than nothing even if
00:02:39
I protect just one arm that's better
00:02:41
than nothing especially with a
00:02:43
single-handed sword and a fighting style
00:02:46
that favors one leg forward so if I
00:02:50
fight with my right and I keep my right
00:02:52
leg forward and I use you know advancing
00:02:55
and retreating steps without passing
00:02:58
then I can keep the uh right arm forward
00:03:02
the entire time while keeping the left
00:03:05
completely out of the way so I don't
00:03:07
have to worry about that and uh I can
00:03:09
take some hits here if both arms are
00:03:11
armored and you have good gauntlets it
00:03:12
makes fighting with a pole arm a lot
00:03:14
safer but of course with a pull arm you
00:03:18
do take passing steps it would be pretty
00:03:21
awkward to only stay on one side and try
00:03:25
to fight this way there's a lot of
00:03:28
passing steps involved and of course
00:03:30
every time you take a passing
00:03:32
step you rotate your torso which becomes
00:03:36
exposed at least for a moment if we look
00:03:38
at the way people armored themselves in
00:03:40
history who didn't have access to a full
00:03:41
suit the priority is reversed it's
00:03:45
generally helmet first then body armor
00:03:49
then limbs sometimes you'd see something
00:03:51
sort of in between where a soldier might
00:03:53
be wearing a gambeson with Jack chains
00:03:56
so you have a little bit more emphasis
00:03:58
on limb protection there but you usually
00:04:00
the body and particularly the head are
00:04:03
prioritized when it comes to Fantasy I
00:04:06
actually like asymmetrical Barbarian or
00:04:08
Gladiator style armor where for example
00:04:10
one arm is heavily protected in one leg
00:04:14
or you have like a plate over one side
00:04:16
of the chest it's silly in terms of
00:04:19
practical value but it looks cool other
00:04:23
benefits to it again anything is better
00:04:26
than nothing now I don't have a
00:04:27
breastplate right now I suppose The
00:04:29
Necromancer armor I made for Halloween
00:04:30
will do for demonstration so with any
00:04:33
kind of armor of course you have some
00:04:36
limitations it's not as bad as Hollywood
00:04:39
tries to make you believe sometimes it
00:04:41
being super clunky and awkward to move
00:04:43
in but of course it restricts your
00:04:45
movement for example there is a reason
00:04:48
breast plates are shaped like this you
00:04:50
need these circular cutouts because
00:04:52
otherwise you can't put your arms
00:04:54
together even like this I made Fairly
00:04:57
generous cutouts and even so I can't
00:04:59
bring my arms fully together a well-made
00:05:03
properly fitted suit of armor of course
00:05:05
minimizes these problems but it's always
00:05:07
going to be there the way the different
00:05:08
pieces interact one thing I found
00:05:11
surprisingly cumbersome in hos barring
00:05:14
is the interaction between the mask and
00:05:17
the gor that actually can limit how much
00:05:20
you can move your shoulders to an extent
00:05:23
it's one of those things that you
00:05:24
wouldn't expect and of course a rigid
00:05:26
breastplate makes you much more
00:05:27
inflexible which is good and bad so on
00:05:30
the one hand it means that you can't
00:05:33
bend and flex your torso the way you
00:05:35
normally can on the other hand the good
00:05:38
thing is that it stabilizes your spine a
00:05:41
mechanically limited range of motion can
00:05:43
protect you from overextending yourself
00:05:45
causing injury whether it be tearing
00:05:49
tendons and ligaments or dislocating
00:05:51
joints things of that nature when it
00:05:53
comes to weight the breastplate is
00:05:55
actually the least of your concerns so
00:05:57
you're not saving as much as you might
00:05:59
think by ditching it the worst is the
00:06:02
legs really which is why in the 16th
00:06:05
century as they kept making armor
00:06:07
thicker to withstand gunfire at some
00:06:10
point they mostly ditched leg armor
00:06:12
because it just becomes too cumbersome
00:06:14
that extra weight on your legs can be
00:06:17
quite exhausting whether it be on the
00:06:19
March or when doing footwork in a fight
00:06:21
it can slow you down and uh it's just
00:06:24
generally a bit of a nuisance extra
00:06:26
weight on the arms also has quite an
00:06:28
impact of course it's like swinging a
00:06:30
heavier weapon whereas the breastplate
00:06:33
distributes pretty well and you don't
00:06:36
carry it just on your shoulders you also
00:06:39
carry it on your hips and of course that
00:06:41
way you can carry quite a lot if you
00:06:43
think about backpacks a backpack that is
00:06:46
just sitting on your shoulders gets
00:06:48
heavy pretty soon but if it rests on
00:06:51
your hips you can carry it no problem
00:06:54
even at a pretty significant weight so
00:06:56
I'm sure ditching body armor makes it
00:06:58
more comfortable and especially
00:06:59
espcially cooler in hot climate even in
00:07:02
just a gamerson you can overheat quite
00:07:05
easily when exercising obviously
00:07:08
fighting is pretty significant exercise
00:07:09
but it still seems like an odd Choice
00:07:11
when you're already wearing armor on
00:07:13
your head and your limbs you're not
00:07:15
really saving all that much if you deal
00:07:18
with this to begin with the attention to
00:07:21
detail here is impressive actually
00:07:22
despite the odd choice to leave the
00:07:24
Torso uncovered there is still padding
00:07:26
under the armor you don't want to wear
00:07:28
the steel Direct on your flesh and get
00:07:30
your skin pinched by the overlapping
00:07:32
plates so you have to wear something
00:07:34
underneath anyway and if you do why not
00:07:38
wear a gamerson you know because
00:07:40
otherwise You' have to wear the detached
00:07:43
sleeves and pant legs duable but uh why
00:07:47
I know why because it's cool or in this
00:07:50
case because it's sexy I suppose anyway
00:07:53
hope you f entertaining again check out
00:07:55
iron L's work down below and uh stay

Description:

Check out Ironlily's work: https://linktr.ee/ironlily https://twitter.com/vanishlily Partial armor is quite popular in fantasy art, movies, anime, and video games, be it in the form of barbarian or gladiator equipment or... titillating female warrior outfits. This is a unique case though... an exceptionally realistic portrayal of a medieval suit of plate, but with breasts instead of breastplate. :D Of course back in real-life history not everyone could afford a full set, and some protection is better than none. Also there are techniques and guard positions to fight from which minimize certain target areas. Another consideration is mobility and over-heating. So let's over-think it a little... how much could a knight / solder / mercenary gain from ditching the body armor but keeping he helmet, gorget, and limb protection?
