Source : Markandeya Puran Voice : Anjali Kadri [email protected] Durga Saptashati, also known as Devi Mahatmya or Chandi Path, is a sacred text from the Markandeya Purana. Composed by the sage Shri Markandeya in Sanskrit. It consists of 13 chapters (74 to 86), totaling 700 shlokas. This revered scripture extols the glory and prowess of Goddess Durga, the divine mother and embodiment of feminine power. Durga Saptashati is revered for its spiritual significance and its ability to bestow blessings, protection, and liberation upon its readers and devotees. It presents powerful hymns and stories that celebrate the divine glory of Goddess Durga, emphasizing her role as the ultimate source of cosmic power and the dispeller of darkness. The first chapter introduces King Suratha. Despite being a just ruler, he faced opposition from wicked kings. Betrayed by his own ministers, Suratha fled to a forest in despair. In the forest, Suratha found the hermitage of the revered sage Medha. Concerned about his kingdom and loyal followers, Suratha sought solace. There, he encountered Samadhi, a merchant expelled by his greedy family. Both approached the sage for guidance. Suratha expressed his attachment to his lost kingdom, while Samadhi remained affectionate towards his ungrateful family. The sage explained how attachment and delusion affect all beings, citing the power of Mahamaya, the Great Illusion. He revealed that Mahamaya is the divine manifestation of Vishnu's YogaNidra, responsible for the creation, sustenance and dissolution of the universe. Curious, Suratha inquired about Devi Mahamaya's origin, nature, and powers. The rishi explained that Lord Brahma praised YogaNidra and prayed to her for Bhagwan Vishnu to be awakened from his mystic sleep to defeat the powerful asuras, Madhu and Kaitabha. After battling for five thousand years, seeing Bhagwan's courage, the asuras were impressed and offered him a boon. Wisely, Bhagwan asked for the boon to slay them with his own hands. The asuras agreed but only on the condition that they should be killed in a dry place. They said this because when they looked around, they saw water everywhere. This was the water of Pralay (the great flood). Bhagwan invoked his divine weapons and ended their existence on his thighs. दुर्गा सप्तशती, जिसे देवी महात्म्य या चण्डी पाठ भी कहा जाता है, एक अत्यंत पवित्र और शक्तिशाली पाठ है जो मार्कण्डेय पुराण के १३ अध्यायों से बना है (७४ से ८६)। इसकी रचना महर्षि श्री मार्कण्डेय जी संस्कृत भाषा में की है, जिसमें कुल ७०० श्लोक हैं। इस महान धार्मिक ग्रन्थ में देवी दुर्गा की महिमा और शक्ति की प्रशंसा की गई है , जो जगद् की माता और साक्षात् स्त्री शक्ति हैं। दुर्गा सप्तशती अपने आध्यात्मिक महत्व और भक्तों को आशीर्वाद, संरक्षण और अभयदान प्रदान करने के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। इसमें कई शक्तिशाली स्तोत्र और कथाएँ प्रस्तुत किए गए है। देवी दुर्गा की स्तुति और उनकी दिव्य महिमा का वर्णन करने से हमें सृष्टि में उनकी महत्त्वपूर्ण भूमिका का ज्ञान प्राप्त होता है और वे किस प्रकार से इस ब्रह्मांड की शक्ति के रूप में सारे अंधकार का नाश करती है इसका ज्ञान होता है । पहला अध्याय राजा सुरथ के बारे में बताता है, जो न्यायपूर्वक शासन करते थे। उन्हें कुछ दुष्ट राजाओं से हार का सामना करना पड़ा, जिसके बाद उनके अपने ही मंत्रियों ने उनका विश्वासघात किया। इस कारण सुरथ निराशा होकर एक जंगल में भाग आए। जंगल में, सुरथ ने ऋषि मेधा के आश्रम को खोजा। वे अब भी अपने राज्य और निष्ठावान अनुयायों की चिंता में डूबे थे। वहाँ वे समाधि नामक एक व्यापारी से मिले, जिसे उसके लालची परिवार ने बाहर निकाल दिया था। दोनों ने ऋषि मेधा से मार्गदर्शन के लिए प्रार्थना की। सुरथ ने अपने हारे हुए राज्य के प्रति अपनी आसक्ति व्यक्त की। समाधि भी अपने अकृतज्ञ परिवार के प्रति आसक्ति से त्रस्त था। ऋषि ने बताया कि सब जीवों को मोह और भ्रम प्रभावित करते हैं, जो महामाया की शक्ति से उत्पन्न होते हैं । यह महामाया भगवान विष्णु जी की योगनिद्रा का प्रकटीकरण है, जिनकी स्तुति ब्रह्मा जी ने की थी जब वे मधु और कैटभ नामक दैत्यों से पीड़ित थे, ताकि भगवान योगनिद्रा की अवस्था से उठकर उन दैत्यों का विनाश करें। जब भगवान उठे तो उन्होंने पाँच हजार वर्षों तक दैत्यों के साथ युद्ध किया। भगवान के साहस को देखकर असुर बहुत प्रभावित हुए। उन्होंने भगवान से कहा की आप हम से कोई वर माँग लीजिए। भगवान ने बड़ी चतुराई से उनका वध कर ने का वर माँगा । असुरों ने सहमति दी, लेकिन क्योंकि समय प्रलयकाल का था और सभी जगहों पर पानी था, उन्होंने यह शर्त रखी कि वे किसी सूखे स्थान पर ही मारे जा सकेंगे। भगवान ने अपने दिव्य आयुधों को प्रकट किया और अपने जांघों पर उन दैत्यों को रख कर उनका संहार किया।
