SIMPLE HARMONIC MOTION:A body is said to be in Simple Harmonic Motion, if it moves to and fro about its mean position such that, at any given point its acceleration is directly proportional to its displacement in magnitudebutopposite in direction and is directed always towards the mean position.From this example , we shall discuss about Simple Harmonic Motion.ObserveSimple pendulum:Simple pendulum oscillates about its mean position .Acceleration & displacements are in opposite directions.Acceleration should always be directed towards its midpoint.In other words , the above are the conditions for a body to be in SHM.Simple Harmonic MotionExamples:SHM is one of the basic concept in physics. mechanical wave like sound wave , propagatesas a result of simple harmonic oscillations of the particles of the medium.Projection of a particle performing uniform circular motion on a circumfrence of the circle .Makes some displacement in same intervals of time t.In this example, the spring oscillatiesabout its mean position,Acceleration is more , displacement is more.Thevibrations of a tuning fork oscillates about its mean position that is i.e., its vibrations are in SHM.Oscillations of a liquid column in a U-tube.In U-tube, liquid oscillates about it mean position i.e., (that is) its oscillation is in SHM.These are different examples of Simple Harmonic Motion.Thefollowig are the conditions for a body to be in Simple Harmonic Motion, 1 The motion should be periodic about a fixed point. 2 Acceleration and displacements should be always in opposite directions. 3 The acceleration should always be directed towards the fixed mean position.
