Up next, a band that had to fight tooth and nail to get airplay on American radio in the late 70s. The Police struggled to get a fair shake in 1979 but just a few years later they were the #1 band in the world when Synchronicity and Every Breath You Take were #1 globally. Sting, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland’s global domination would begin with today’s song that is a no doubt about it classic. The 70s classic Message in a Bottle and in a way it was written by the singer Sting's dog… while the music was written in the back of a van while the band was traveling 100 miles an hour on the autobahn. So, it’s time for another edition of #1 in Our Hearts. One of my favorite shows on here where we honor songs that were so unbelievably great, they absolutely should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. But for whatever reason, be it radio play, lack of marketing, label support, or just sheer stupidity, the song came up short. Previously we have covered Under Pressure by Queen and David Bowie, Steppin’ Out by Joe Jackson, and Tainted Love by Soft Cell. Today we are giving The Police’s 1979 classic “Message in a Bottle” its due and inducting it into the Professor of Rock Hall of Fame. The fact that Message in a Bottle only reached #74 on America’s Billboard Hot 100 is absolutely criminal. It seemed like everyone else in the free world got it. After all, it went to #1 in the UK, #2 in Canada, #5 in Australia, and did well across Europe. The Police had already made some headway in America thanks to a grueling tour that had them driving across the US in a Ford Econoline van. Their debut album Outlandos d’Amour even reached #23 in the States and Roxanne came in at #32. But in the interim, singles Can’t Stand Losing You and So Lonely both failed to chart. And by the fall of ‘79, The Police were surprisingly trending in the wrong direction in the US. The Police were perplexed and disappointed. They had high hopes for creating buzz in America. Stewart Copeland figured that maybe their music was too sophisticated or a bit too jangly for American airwaves. And Sting said, “I think to have a hit single in America, the single has to obey a formula. And I don’t think Message in a Bottle particularly fit in that formula. But I mean that’s no reason for us to be disheartened because if anything it makes us more unique.” The same week that Message in a Bottle peaked at 74, the artists who did fit the formula were Rupert Holmes, KC and the Sunshine Band, and Styx.
