Описание:

This film from 1969 is on the Apollo IX Mission and is presented by the Office of Manned Spaceflight (:14). This was the final mission before the manned lunar landing mission and was to test the final components for that mission. It opens with shots of the moon’s surface retrieved from the Apollo VIII mission with Borman, Lovell and Anders (:49). The Lunar Module, whose testing was the prime objective, is shown at (1:25). The Apollo-Saturn V is seen after being mated with all modules and launch vehicle (2:19). On January 3rd, it was transported to Launch Pad 9 at Complex 39 (2:25), at the Kennedy Space Center (2:25). The ground control room on here (3:08) was under the direction of Dr. Kurt Debus (3:10). Mid-count the launch is called off by Dr. Charles Berry as all three astronauts exhibited minor cold symptoms (3:16). The final countdown is then continued on March 3rd, 1969(3:29). James McDivitt (3:34), Russel Schweickart (3:35) were both to move from the Command Module to the Lunar Module during the mission and had to wear heavier suits (3:43). The Command Module pilot, David Scott is seen wearing a lighter suit as he would remain in the Command Module (3:48). The White Room is pictured with astronauts arriving (4:00) and preparing to enter the space craft. Rocco Petrone is seen next as the launch director (4:13). NASA officials who monitor the steps of the terminal countdown include Dr. George Miller (4:28), Dr. Werner Von Braun (4:29) Dr. Thomas Paine (4:36) and Frank Borman. Ignition (4:52) and take off (5:16) are filmed and airborne cameras catch the engine shut down and separation of the first stage (6:18). The burn off of the second stage (6:31) and ignition of third stage follow (6:45). In the second revolution the service module is separated from the third stage and a station keeping exercise is conducted (7:06). The Command Module is then docked with the Lunar Module (7:18). On the second day the engines were fired three times to put them into an elliptical Earth orbit (7:51). On the third day the Lunar Module is seen entered for the first time (8:25). Schweickart experiences motion sickness and this leads to a short delay (8:29). The systems of the Lunar Module were activated for the first time (8:41) and the lunar landing engine was fired, also for the first time (8:55). After the astronauts return to the Command Module (9:14) the main engine was fired and they maintained a circular orbit. The Lunar Module is then again entered for extra vehicular activities (9:34). While Schweickart retrieves a thermal sample form the Lunar Module's surface and tests it’s handrails (10:03), he photographs Scott hanging outside of the Command Module hatch (10:15) as he retrieves a thermal sample. The monitors at ground control are playing footage from television cameras which the astronauts were testing (10:42). The Lunar Module separates from the Command Module and is then operating in space for the first time on its own power (12:12). Footage is provided of the pair three miles away from each other (12:30). After moving 86 miles away, the pair then begins to move in to rendezvous (12:56) which was to be the most important maneuver as the Lunar Module couldn’t re-enter Earth’s atmosphere alone. Station keeping (13:30) and docking (13:37) follows. Afterwards, the crew focuses on general flight experience, navigation and Earth terrain photography (14:23). Areas photographed were previously uncaptured or were previously low-quality photographs (14:39). An extensive multi-spectral terrain photography experiment was also conducted (15:27). These would potentially be used to help Earth’s resources to be used more efficiently (15:45). Re-entry begins (16:26) and the main and drogue parachutes are seen deployed (16:40). The recovery of the astronauts by the crew of the USS Guadalcanal is viewed from monitors at ground control (17:03). This film draws to conclusion as applause erupts for the astronauts and this signified the end of the final test before the manned lunar landing mission (17:13). Apollo 9 was a March 1969 human spaceflight, the third in NASA's Apollo program. It was the second crewed Apollo mission launched via a Saturn V rocket, and was the first flight of the full Apollo spacecraft. The three-man crew consisted of Commander James McDivitt, Command Module Pilot David Scott, and Lunar Module Pilot Rusty Schweickart. After launching on March 3, 1969, the crew performed the first crewed flight of a lunar module, the first docking and extraction of the same, one two-person spacewalk (EVA), and the docking of two crewed spacecraft. The mission proved the LM worthy of crewed spaceflight.
