In this walk, we will visit one of the most famous shopping centers GUM, located near red Square, go from Ilinka street, walk along the 2nd line of the 1st floor through and out on Nikolskaya street. Brief history of Gum: The place near red square has long been favored by merchants who sold a variety of goods in their shops. By the 17th century, most retail outlets had acquired a rather unsightly appearance, so at the behest of the Empress Catherine II, it was decided to build a building for trade in the classical style. The project was developed by a well-known architect, Giacomo Quarenghi, who came from Italy. Construction took place under the direction of several architects of the city, but it was not completed. The reconstruction of the building of the Upper trade rows (the name that preceded Gum) was carried out by Osip Bove after the fire that occurred in 1812. The vast structure was located on the territory bounded by red square and Rags passage. By the end of the 60s of the XIX century the Beauvais ' building looked dilapidated and outdated at that time. People started talking about the need to reconstruct the Upper shopping rows. But for a long time, the city authorities could not begin to alter the building, because this was actively opposed by the shopkeepers. The owners, who owned more than six hundred retail outlets, formed their own Commission, which had to deal with the reconstruction of the shopping complex, in the hope of getting some preferences from the city. Negotiations between merchants and the Moscow authorities did not yield results for two decades. In the end, the city authorities closed the Upper shopping rows under the pretext of their emergency condition, moving the points of sale to temporary buildings on red square. This state of Affairs negatively affected trade, merchants suffered significant losses and were forced to agree to participate in the reconstruction. In the autumn of 1888, a closed competition was held for the design of a new structure, as a result of which three architectural developments were selected – A. N. Pomerantsev, R. I. Klein and A. E. Weber. Many of the works presented, including the award-winning ones, were similar in terms of style and layout solutions.
