Bharat Forge gets 1st Export Order for 155mm artillery gun Those who are following the share market would have got news about the huge rise in the share price of Bharat Forge Limited. Today the company’s share reached 52 weeks high. The reason for the massive jump in its share price is the new order for the company. The company has announced winning an award for 155mm artillery gun platform which will be executed in 3 years’ time frame. The total value of the order is $155.5 million. This is well deserved order by Bharat forge which is now making almost all times of artilleries. There was a time when India has to export Bofors and M777 artilleries but now it is self-reliant in making all of them 100% indigenously. All thanks to Baba Kalyani who spearheaded in this area and achieved this marvelous feast. However, the irony is that Indian Army which has massive requirement of artilleries in different categories has yet not placed any order with Bharat Forge. While it is not clear at the moment to which country the Bharat Forge is exporting but during the DefExpo 2022 in Gujarat, Many Southeast Asian and African countries has shown interest in the artillery guns of Bharat Forge. Company officials said at the Expo that they have secured export orders for the Kalyani-M4 vehicles. There are possibilities that the country who has ordered for artilleries could be Saudi Arabia. The middle east nation was evaluating the Bharat 52 and Garuda V2 guns by Bharat Forge. In the year 2020, these guns have been sent to Saudi Arabia for trials by Royal Saudi Army in the forbidding Saudi Arabian desert. Bharat Forge Artilleries The Bharat 52 is a 155 millimetre (mm), 52 calibre (cal) towed howitzer whereas Garuda V2 is a 105 mm gun mounted on a light vehicle chassis for added mobility. During the Defense expo the Bharat forge has also showcased its 155mm/52 calibre Mounted Gun System on BEML 8X8 High Mobility Vehicle. The 155mm gun will be based on the ATAGS gun system developed by DRDO & Bharat Forge. The company has also developed its own version of M777 which is called 155mm/39 Cal Ultra-Light Howitzer. The famous ATAGS gun has also successfully completed its final revalidation trial after five years of rigorous testing and trials. It has been proven to be the World’s Best Artillery Gun in the 155mm/52cal category capable of Zone-7 firing. During the high-altitude trials in Sikkim, the ATAGS created a new record as it fired at 13,000+ feet height and successfully completed 500+ km in treacherous high-altitude terrain up to 15,400 feet & proved its extreme mobility in the narrow mountain curves. Role of Artillery in Kargil War In an advent of full fledge war where there is short or artilleries and guns, Bharat Forge can alone fulfill all the requirement. The Artilleries have turned the tide of war during the Kargil War and Operation Vijay. Despite the controversy over its induction, 155mm FH 77-B Bofors gun performed remarkably well and was mainstay of artillery in the operations. Its maximum range of 30 km enabled deep strikes on the enemy's gun positions, administrative installations, ammunition dumps, and headquarters, besides neutralizing forward positions held by the intruders. With the help of Bofors guns, 105mm field guns, 160mm and 120mm Mortars and 122mm GRAD BM 21 Multi Barrel Rocket Launcher's (MBRLs) the army was able to directly fire on enemy localities, literally under the nose of the enemy. But India ran out of ammunition for the artillery guns of Bofors. The Bharat Forge got an emergency request from the MOD to make ammunition. If you look at the current capability of Bharat Forge, the firm can produce 6 guns in 30 days i.e. One gun every 5 days. The firm is in the process of setting up the world’s largest artillery manufacturing capacity. In three years from now, it will produce one gun per day.
