Normal Mode: 0:00 Super Mode: 51:53 Bubble Bobble is a classic platform game released by Taito starring two brothers, Bubby and Bobby, who have been transformed into Bubble Dragons by the evil Baron Von Blubba. To make matters worse, Von Blubba has kidnapped the brother's girlfriends and spirited them away to the Cave of Monsters. Bub and Bob must journey through 100 levels of platform action in order to rescue their girls and to regain their human form. Each level takes place on a single screen that is of fixed width and height. A set number of enemies spawn at the start of the round and each of these must be defeated in order to progress to the next screen. Having been turned into Bubble Dragons, Bub and Bob now possess the ability to breathe bubbles that can be used to trap enemies inside. The bubbles can be burst by jumping into them and this defeats the trapped monster, removing them from the playfield. Enemies can eventually escape from bubbles and they will, understandably, be pretty angry about things, which results in there attack and movement speeds increasing significantly. The concept seems straightforward, but the variety of enemies and platform layouts can make for some extremely challenging gameplay. Later levels require the player to use their bubbles as trampolines by bouncing on them to reach enemies on platforms that cannot be reached by other means. In fact, some of the final levels are completely bonkers, requiring precision jumping and bubbling skills that are just not easily achievable with an arcade control stick. Special bubbles containing fire, electricity or water will appear on certain levels and these can be used to defeat enemies more rapidly than trapping them in bubbles. For example, the water bubble releases a torrent of water that will wash away enemies it comes into contact with and can also be used by the player to transport them to places in the level that might be unreachable by normal means. One of the things that really sets Bubble Bobble apart from other arcade games is the number of secret features and hidden items. It isn't until you beat the game that it's revealed that you haven't actually beaten it and you're not seeing the true ending. The true ending is only revealed by entering a code at the title screen that allows the player to unlock "Super Mode". Thanks to the internet, it's simple to find out what the code is, but back in the day the only way to learn it would be to beat the game, upon which the player is presented with a cryptographic code that can be used to decipher messages located in each of the game's hidden treasure rooms. The treasure rooms only appear every ten levels and the player cannot lose any lives in the process. The door to the room appears for a short period of time, so it's not guaranteed that you will make it inside before the doors disappear. Super Mode is the same as the normal game, except the enemies on each stage have been replaced by more powerful and dangerous versions, thus making the game tougher to complete. Should you manage to beat Super Mode, you will be greeted to the game's true ending. It would take the player many, many attempts, plenty of money, time and nerves of steal if they had any hope of seeing the true ending. If there's one thing I always loved about the game, it was the sheer variety of fruit and food stuffs that could be collected from dead enemies for points; nothing beats scoffing a bunch of bananas reclaimed from a recently deceased corpse! It's also worth mentioning that the game contains one of the most memorable tunes ever created and is instantly recognisable. I would bet that most gamers could hum the tune if asked! The game was ported to just about every platform available at the time of release. I owned both the C64 and Amiga versions back in the day, both of which were excellent. Bubble Bobble remains an endearing classic that is still great fun to play even today. #retrogaming
