Ukrainian police said on Tuesday (May 30) they evacuated three orphans from the frontline town of Niu-York in the eastern Donetsk region. Video released by police in the Telegram messaging app channel showed a police officer helping children to put on reflective jackets and helmets before they boarded a vehicle. Yana, 11, Denys, 9, and Ania, 7, became orphans after their parents died from diseases a few years ago. The police statement did not specify with whom the children had been staying since then, but according to the children’s testimonies, a shell landed in the backyard of their house, shattering windows. The police officer said the children were first taken to the medical facility for examination before reuniting with their relatives. Niu-York lies some 50 kilometers to the north of the separatists' stronghold of Donetsk and 50 kilometers to the south of Bakhmut. The Donetsk region has seen the heaviest fighting since February 2022 with the fiercest battles raging for the cities of Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Vuhledar.
