The cedar is the symbol of Lebanon and also represented in the Lebanese Flag. Lebanon is a country of 6 million people. Many of the Lebanese live in Beirut. The metropolitan area of Beirut has a population of 2,2 million. On 4 August 2020, a massive explosion in the Port of Beirut resulted in the death of hundreds of people and destroyed the harbour and a huge part of the city. As many as 300,000 people have been left homeless by the explosion. The explosion was followed up by a huge fire in the city in September 2020. The cause of the blast is believed to be from stored ammonium nitrate. However, Beirut is rising from its ashes.
