Deborah Ann Harry was born Angela Tremble on July 1, 1945 in Miami, Florida and was adopted by Catherine and Richard Smith Harry in Hawthorne, New Jersey. Not one to sit and watch the world go by, she graduated High School in 1963, then in 1965 she got her Bachelor Of Arts Degree. Moving to New York City, she took a job as a secretary working for the BBC Radio Office for a short time. Her stunning good looks got her jobs as a waitress, a go go dancer at a disco club and then a Playboy bunny. In the late 60's, she did background vocals for a folk rock group called Wind In The Willows who released one self titled LP on Capitol in 1968. A second album was abandoned during the recording and the master tapes have since been lost. 1974 was a very good year for Deborah, she joined female rockers The Stilettos and soon Chris Stein became a member. Unsatisfied with the direction The Stilettos were going, Harry and Stein left to form Angel & The Snakes. Deborah began bleaching her hair to a shocking blonde, and began getting catcalls from men on the street when she went out. The name they called her was "Blondie" and it inspired her and Stein to form their own band. Quickly becoming the next thing, they recorded their first LP in 1976. They were the nations tastemakers with hit after hit and surprisingly faded away after the relative failure of "The Hunter" from 1981. A collaboration with the boys from Chic was proposed and realized. She released her first solo LP, "Koo Koo" that was beautifully packaged with controversial photographic art that displayed Deborah with four steel skewers piercing through the side of her head and neck that made retailers nervous. Swiss artist H.R. Giger, who had created the alien in 1979's "Alien" certainly knew how to grab your attention! I remember taking the bus home from the mall, where I had just picked up the vinyl album and was admiring the artwork, when a fellow passenger got up and moved. I listened to it endlessly, loved it but thought it was not a commercial album. It represented a start in the right direction for Niles & 'Nard which paid off in spades with David Bowie's "Let's Dance" LP in 1983. "Backfired" was the first single, then "The Jam Was Moving", but I thought the best track was "Now I Know You Know". I didnt see the video for the last one until MTV had one of those "we are going to play every video in our library from a to z" marathons, and really dug the HR Giger designer cat suit she wore along with that wig of long black hair....feeling sentimental today and remembering August of 1981 when "Backfired" was on the radio.
