Sunrise Express Izumo & Seto is Japan's only overnight sleeper train which runs everyday. Today, I book the cheapest private room called “Solo” from Tokyo Station to Izumoshi Station. It's a 590 mile (950km) trip that takes about 12 hours. When booking a Solo room, even if you are a foreign tourist with a JR pass, you will need to go to the ticket office and pay an additional sleeper private room fee in advance. In addition, I recommend you reserve a seat on the right side. This is because you can see other trains and a nice view of Lake Shinji.
