The Kilo-class diesel-electric 5,900 horse power submarine of the Pacific Fleet "Volkhov" in the Sea of Japan performed a launch of a Kalibr cruise missile from a submerged position at a ground target. The Volkhov is the second of six submarines built for the Pacific fleet. It was laid in July 2017 and floated in December 2019. The construction of the series goes on schedule and is to be completed in 2022. Project 636.3 submarines (Kilo-class) are the third generation of diesel-electric submarines which are the most noiseless in the world. They develop an underwater speed of 31–46 km/h, submerge to 300 meters (250 meters operational) and have a cruising capacity of 45 days. Armament: Air defence: 8 Strela-3 or 8 Igla-1, but after sea trial it has been rejected by the navy. Six 533 mm torpedo tubes with 18 torpedoes or 24 mines, Kalibr missiles system comprising four launchers for individual anti-ship, anti-submarine and land attack cruise missiles. Price per unit is US$ 200–250 million. The crew comprises 52 men, the underwater displacement is close to four thousand tons. They carry Kalibr missiles to strike at the surface and ground targets (cruise missiles) and have new electronic equipment. The Kalibr is a family of Russian-made surface to ship, submarine-launched and airborne anti-ship and coastal anti-ship, land-attack cruise missiles, and anti-submarine missiles. According to Russian military sources, the missile has an estimated range of around 1,500 to 2,500 km, and a supersonic terminal speed of Mach 2.9 (3,550 km/h). The Kalibr is a submarine-launched anti-shipping variant deployed by the Russian Navy. Its length is 8.22 m, with a 200 kg warhead. Launch platforms for Kalibr: 'Club-K' - a Russian container complex of missile weapons; the Russian Kilo class, Lada class, Amur class, Akula class, Yasen class, and Borei class are the submarine launch platforms for the missiles; the Russian Admiral Gorshkov class, Admiral Grigorovich class, and Gepard class frigates are able to carry these missiles; the Russian Gremyashchy class, Buyan-M class corvettes with Kalibr system ability. The missile struck the coastal target at the Syurkum tactical ground in the Khabarovsk Region at the designated time. The missile was launched to a distance of over 1,000 km. Before accomplishing the combat exercise, the submariners stealthily deployed to the designated area. Can detect submarines with noisiness in 16 km and surface vessels with noisiness in 100 km. The improved sonar systems have reduced the number of operators needed by sharing the same console via automation. Anechoic tiles are fitted on casings and fins to absorb the sound waves of active sonar, which results in a reduction and distortion of the return signal. These tiles also help attenuate sounds that are emitted from the submarine, thus reducing the range at which the submarine may be detected by passive sonar. Ships and vessels of the Russian Pacific Fleet, aircraft and drones of the Pacific Fleet’s naval aviation provided support for the missile firing.
