India started developing its own navigation system after the US denied GPS access during the 1999 Kargil Conflict. The NavIC system currently covers only India and its surroundings but is considered to be more accurate than the American GPS, providing a position accuracy of 5 meters compared to GPS's 20-30 meters. NavIC operates in two frequency bands – L and S – making it more accurate and less prone to obstructions with three Geostationary satellites and four geosynchronous satellites situated in higher orbits. Currently, NavIC has been mainly used for defense, disaster monitoring, agriculture optimization, real-time tracking of fishermen, and geological studies. The NavIC system was previously operating on the L5 and L6 bands, which are not compatible with mobile handsets, but after the European Galileo system was granted permission to use the L1 band, India received similar authorization. The system has had setbacks, including failures of atomic clocks on board IRNSS-1A and issues with the PSLV-C39 mission, prompting the replacement of satellites. Advanced Weaponry Integration: Modern warfare heavily relies on advanced navigation systems for a variety of weaponry, from precision-guided bombs to drones. Having its own navigation system allows India to integrate NavIC into its defense mechanisms, ensuring they remain operational in case of denied access to other global systems during conflicts.
