In the XVI century the road from the Kremlin to the Novodevichy Convent, founded in 1524 by Grand Duke Vasily III in memory of the liberation of Smolensk from Polish rule, ran along the street. The urban development along the street began to form in the last third of the 16th century after the establishment of oprichnina (a confederation of oprichnina), when by the command of Ivan the Terrible the Chertolskaya street was included "with Semchinskaya village and to the table...". The new street was a continuation of the pre-existing street Chertolskaya, from which borrowed its original name. Street was also called Pokrovskaya, after the gate church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin in Novodevichy monastery. In the modern limits was formed at the end of the XVI century, having received the beginning at the Chertol gates of the White City, and the end at the same name gates Skorodom (Wooden City). In the XVII century most of the right side of Chertolskaya Street was occupied by the yards of the Konyushennaya Sloboda, behind which since the middle of the century there had been a Sloboda of strelets department head Afanasy Ivanovich Levshin. Contemporary Levshin side-streets were named after him. On the opposite side of the street, near the fortifications of Zemlyanoy Gorod was a quarter of another Streltsy Department, founded in 1633. Its first commander was Ivan Alferevich Begichev. In 1650-1670s the order was commanded by father and son Dmitry and Ivan Zubovs whose surnames were used to form the name of the place - Zubovo which in its turn gave names to the nearby Zubovsky Boulevard and square. The last commander of the regiment was a squire Tikhon Khristoforovich Gundertmark. Under his leadership, Streltsy units of Zubovsky took part in the Azov campaigns of Peter I, and then in the famous Streltsy uprising of 1698. After its suppression, most of the local streltsy men were executed during the mass streltsy executions. Their neighbors, the former Streltsy units of Livsha, under their new commander Mikhail Fyodorovich Sukharev, were sent to "eternal life" in Kyiv after the completion of the Azov campaign. The stockades of both streltsy regiments were abolished by the tsar order in 1699. Since the end of the XVII century the street Prechistenka was gradually transformed into one of the most popular streets of the Moscow nobility. The names of its eminent landlords were preserved in the names of the alleys - Vsevolozhsky, Lopukhinsky, Yeropkinsky, etc. Up to 1930s on Prechistenka there remained vast estates of Khrushchev and Stepanov, laid out back in the times of Catherine II. However, in the second half of XIX century the land passed into merchant hands, and in the list of landlords appeared the Morozovs and Konshins. In 1921 the street was renamed into Kropotkinskaya Street in honor of the Russian revolutionary anarchist Peter Kropotkin, who was born in one of the Prechistenka lanes - State (since 1921 - Kropotkinskaya).
