I show you how flexible and resilient these worms are and how you can also limit their movement to make them easier to see under the microscope. No animals were harmed in the making of this film! The freshwater worm Aeolosoma is about 2mm long and very flexible. I got several of them from a sample of algae from a local lake. And I played around with them a bit under the microscope. They reproduce mostly asexually, this means that one worm is able to separate itself to form several. No harm was done to the worms! Worms were returned to the jar after I looked at them under the microscope. Some more technical details: In order to get the best images, I carefully picked out several worms and places them on a slide without the filamentous algae, which would have disturbed the free movement of the worm. Tracking the worms is difficult becasue of their movement, even at the lowest magnification (4x), which I used most of the time. Two cover glasses were therefore placed next to each other, at a distance of about 1-2 mm, and a third cover glass was placed on top of these two. This gave the worm enough freedom of movement. It is also possible to observe the worms without cover glass. Placing a cover glass directly on the worm, without a spacer, is not recommended as this would really squash the worm (This is the reason, why I did not show the placing of the cover glass on the water sample in the video). It is also possible to use microscope slides with an indentation (concave slides) for large specimens like this.
