This band was orginally formed in 1967 in London by singer & guitarrist Marc Bolan, drummer Steve Porter and two other musicians as 'Tyrannosaurus Rex' but they split up immediately after a disastrous first live concert. Bolan and Porter continued (Porter now renamed himself Steve Peregrim Took) and released albums in 1968 ('My People Were Fair...' & 'Prophets, Seers & Sages'), 1969 ('Unicorn) and 1970 ('A Beard Of Stars'). 3 of them charted in the UK album charts. By 1970 Took was replaced by Mickey Finn. In 1971 they added Steve Currie (bass) and drummer Bill Legend. The bandname was now shortened to 'T. Rex' and the group started playing more pop-oriented songs. In October 1970 they released the single 'Ride a White Swan' which peaked at #2 in the UK Single Charts. The band released their next album 'T. Rex' at the end of the same year and reached #7 in their homecountry. Much more successful were the following singles: 'Hot Love' and 'Get It On' both topped the UK Single Charts. 'Get It On' was also a hit in the US Billboard Single Charts. Released as 'Bang A Gong (Get It On)' it peaked at #10 there, which was their highest result in the States. The album 'Electric Warrior' also released in 1971 topped the UK album charts (their only #1 album) and also reached significant positions in European's album charts across the board and in the USA. Their next album 'The Slider' was released in 1972. It peaked at #4 in the UK and #7 in Germany among other charts. Two more singles went to #1 in the UK: "Telegram Sam" and "Metal Guru". The last mentioned also topped the German Charts, which was their only #1 song there. They continued their hot streak with singles 'Children Of The Revolution' and 'Solid Gold Easy Action' - both #2 in the UK. In December that year a movie called 'Born To Boogie' was released to theatres, which featured two T. Rex shows in Wembley. In 1973 the group released their next album 'Tanx' which peaked at #3 in Germany and #4 in the UK. But it was their last Top 10 album. They added 2 more Top 10 singles though as in 1973 both '20th Century Boy' and 'The Groover' reached #3 and #4 respecitvely. In 1974 the group released 'Zinc Alloy and the Hidden Riders Of Tomorrow' under the moniker 'Marc Bolan & T. Rex'. It peaked at #12 in the UK. The single 'Teenage Dream' of the album peaked at #13 showing the decline of the popularity of this formation. In 1977 Marc Bolan died after his girlfriend crashed the car with him into a tree 2 weeks short of his 30th birthday. This ended the band as Bolan was practically the leader.
