В январе 1709 года, был издан «Брюсов календарь». Не один век он «диктовал» людям правила жизни. Он предсказывал погоду, предрекал очередные беды и потрясения, а также мог «расшифровать» судьбу каждого конкретного человека. Инициатором выпуска первого светского календаря стал Петр Первый. Сия непростая задача была поручена Якову Брюсу, человеку энциклопедических знаний, руководителю Московской гражданской типографии. Именно под его «надзрением» и вышли первые два листа «Календаря повсеместного, или Месяцеслова христианского», за которым на многие века закрепилось народное название «Брюсов календарь». Совсем скоро были допечатаны еще четыре листа и, таким образом, первый «Брюсов календарь» состоял из шести листов формата А2. Человек, подаривший имя популярному календарю, обладал поистине разносторонним кругом интересов: астрология и астрономия, математика и география, ботаника и минералогия, физика и метеорология – далеко не полный список «увлечений» Якова Брюса. Однако в народе его упорно именовали не иначе, как чернокнижник или колдун с Сухаревой башни (именно в ней ученый дни и ночи напролет вел исследовательскую работу). «Брюсов календарь» стал настоящей сенсацией, ведь до него люди пользовались только православными святцами или месяцесловами. Святцы в новом календаре оставили, но кроме этого издание дополнили астрономическими данными и «бездной» полезной информации.
