hey guys it's Kristin so in today's
video I'm gonna not only show you how to00:00:14
do paper mache but I'm gonna show you
two different recipes that you can use00:00:19
I've seen a lot of different variations
of recipes online and I've tested a few00:00:24
of them and the two that I'm going to
show you are the best ones that I found00:00:26
make sure you guys stay to the end
because I'm going to show you a couple00:00:29
things not to do and I'm also going to
show you projects that you can do with00:00:32
paper mache because you might be like
well who does that anymore unless you're00:00:35
like in kindergarten but there's
actually a lot of fun things you can do00:00:38
with this so wait to the end to check
those out for this first recipe we're00:00:44
going to be using flour so what you'll
need is one cup of flour one cup of warm00:00:50
water 1/2 a tablespoon of salt and then
a fork or spoon or maybe a mixer just00:00:56
anything to mix around your ingredients
then you also need a dish a pan just00:01:02
something to put it in I recommend
something you can just throw away after00:01:04
so we'll start by adding in the flour
now I do recommend if you can try to00:01:10
break up some of these clumps before you
add the water in it will help a little00:01:13
bit and now I'm gonna add in the warm
water so I'm just gonna do a little bit00:01:17
maybe 1/2 mix it around and then we'll
add the other half it makes it just a00:01:22
little easier to mix it and you don't
feel worried about splashing everywhere00:01:25
so it should be really thick and pasty
at first and I'm already getting flour00:01:30
everywhere so now we're gonna add the
other half in alright so I'm gonna just00:01:35
mix this up and they'll come back to you
guys because this is gonna take a minute00:01:37
or two just to get fully mixed alright
so I've got this mix up pretty well00:01:42
there is a few clumps in here so do your
best to get the clumps out now we're00:01:47
gonna take the salt and just sprinkle
this on top here now you might be asking00:01:51
why salt really it just helps preserve
your project and keeps it from getting00:01:56
moldy so this is the consistency it
should be it should run off your fork if00:02:03
you hold your fork or spoon up and it
just gets stuck you do not have enough00:02:07
water make sure before you start this
project you have your strips of00:02:11
newspaper cut and ready to go because
sometimes the glue mixture and the flour00:02:15
mixture can start hardening up and
thickening up very quickly so having00:02:19
that ready to go is going to be much
better for00:02:21
all right so now I've got all my stuff
ready to go I do recommend getting some00:02:25
sort of a bowl because it's gonna be
easier to place your balloon inside of00:02:29
it to hold it in place all right so I'm
just gonna take my strip of paper and00:02:32
kind of just place it right in there not
too much and you can see it's gonna be00:02:36
very thick so what I'm gonna do is just
kind of run my finger over to get some00:02:40
off and then use that same finger to
just kind of wipe it on the back just00:02:43
make sure both sides are completely
covered with your mixture now when you00:02:46
first place this on here the balloon is
gonna be weighted so it's gonna want to00:02:50
fall over like that so you're just gonna
have to kind of hold it with one or let00:02:55
it fall there we go
got a balance perfect so now I'm gonna00:02:58
dunk the next one in there and it's just
because it's falling over because the00:03:01
weight right balloons are pretty much
weightless and then we're putting this a00:03:04
heavy thick stuff on it so I'll put
another one on this side just to kind of00:03:10
even the weight out and then what I like
to do is smooth it out so I don't know00:03:14
if you could see there's like some bumps
there just make sure it's smooth out00:03:17
like that so now I'm just gonna continue
and we're gonna get the whole thing00:03:21
covered as you're applying the newspaper
after you do maybe you know I don't know00:03:25
five ten strips you may want to rinse
your hands off because what's gonna00:03:29
start happening is the board you use the
flour mixture or the glue it's gonna00:03:34
start getting a buildup on your hands
and your hands are gonna get really00:03:37
sticky which is gonna be harder for you
to like grab the newspaper and keep00:03:40
applying it it's just your hands and
everything will start sticking to each00:03:43
other so it does help if you can rinse
your hands off a few times while you're00:03:47
applying the newspaper all right so I
got everything covered you definitely00:03:51
want to look it over and make sure you
don't see any of the color so that mines00:03:55
like a bright green if I see anything
even if it's covered but I can still see00:03:59
the green it's most likely not thick
enough so put another piece of paper00:04:04
over it now for our second option and
we're going to be using glue so what00:04:09
you'll want to do is have one cup of
glue or two of these bottles a half a00:04:14
cup of warm water and then one teaspoon
of salt and then again a fork a spoon or00:04:19
mix or something like that and then
we'll also need some sort of bowl or00:04:23
dish to mix it around to make the glue
mixture we're gonna start by adding in 100:04:27
cup of glue or two of these containers
now we're going to add our warm00:04:33
and now we'll start mixing this around
so again this is gonna take a few00:04:37
minutes so I'm gonna get all of this
mixed and then I'll show you what the00:04:41
next step is all right so I've got this
all mixed up and it should be kind of a00:04:45
creamy consistency so you can see it
still looks like glue but it's like00:04:50
watery glue so if this looks more
translucent where it looks more like00:04:54
water you don't have enough glue in here
so it should just look like very soupy00:04:59
glue and now we're gonna add our salt in
and we'll mix that around00:05:05
all right now as I mentioned earlier in
the video I'm you might see a lot of00:05:08
recipes online where the glue to water
ratio is equal so like one cup of each00:05:13
or two cups of each when I tested this
it did not work for me it was way too00:05:17
watery so I don't recommend that
particular recipe we're gonna do the00:05:21
same thing with that we're gonna just
stick the paper in there and then I'm00:05:27
just gonna wipe it down a little bit
make sure it's on both sides no you will00:05:33
notice that this is gonna be much more
watery than when you do the flour00:05:38
mixture the mixture with flour is gonna
be very thick it's like if you've ever00:05:42
made dough this is gonna be a lot more
watery so it's a little bit you're some00:05:48
people have that as a preference because
it goes on a little bit easier your00:05:52
hands will get sticky though just like
it did with the flour so you will00:05:56
probably have to do a little rinse off
here and there but we're just gonna00:05:58
cover the whole balloon and then I'll be
right back with you you are going to00:06:02
want to make sure you do two to three
layers of the newspaper when using the00:06:06
glue mixture all right so I've done
multiple layers I did about total of00:06:10
three layers on this balloon so now all
we have to do is set this aside00:06:15
somewhere and let it dry for at least 24
hours now when you're letting these dry00:06:19
you can either let them sit in a dish
like this the only downside is you will00:06:23
have to rotate this probably once an
hour because what will happen is all the00:06:27
glue will start going to the bottom and
it could get stuck also it may leave a00:06:32
circular indentation along the bottom of
your paper mache project so you will00:06:38
want to keep rotating these if you're
gonna leave them in a dish the other00:06:41
option you have is to take some string
and then we're going to tie it around00:06:44
the
of the balloon and hang it somewhere00:06:47
alright so here I've hung these in our
garage just off this table and that way00:06:51
I don't have to worry about them sitting
in a dish rotating them I can just leave00:06:55
them here for anywhere from 24 to 48
hours and then we'll come back and check00:06:59
on them now you are gonna want to put
down some newspaper and more00:07:03
specifically for the balloon with the
glue mixture because it will fall to the00:07:07
bottom and start dripping so this is
about an hour to two hours after and you00:07:11
can see there's a puddle of glue so this
is exactly why you would want to make00:07:16
sure you have a newspaper put down
alright so I've got both of my balloons00:07:19
completely dried
it's been almost 48 hours so we're gonna00:07:23
test and see how these turned out I do
notice right off the bat this one with00:07:28
the flower does seem a little more firm
it can't really push on it too much00:07:33
there's a little bit of slack but on
this one it's a little more flexible I00:07:39
guess is the word but let's cut it open
and see what we've got we'll do the00:07:43
flower one first alright so I'm gonna
start the flower 1 we'll just cut the00:07:47
balloon so it's kind of like I can feel
it deflating inside if you can hear it00:07:54
so you can cut see in there the balloon
completely deflated and it's just kind00:07:58
of sitting in there so as far as the
mache I feel like it held up really well00:08:02
I feel like this is pretty firm it's not
really collapsing or anything so I think00:08:07
it turned out really good let's do the
other one we'll do the same thing I'll00:08:11
just kind of cut the side here and then
I'm gonna try to cut some of this back a00:08:18
little bit I can kind of hear it coming
off00:08:23
alright so with this one I don't know if
you can see it the like coloration on it00:08:28
do you see how the inside looks like
green that is because the balloon did00:08:33
not pull back you guys can't see what
I'm doing I'm trying to pull the balloon00:08:36
off there that came off alright now as
far as this one goes this does actually00:08:42
feel pretty firm if you know whatever
project you were doing this would00:08:46
definitely work the insides really
smooth so I think as far as the paper00:08:50
mache part goes they both turned out
really good so just a couple quick pros00:08:54
and cons regarding each recipe so I did
notice with the flour mixture00:08:58
it was a little thicker and it was more
sticky and a little Messier to apply but00:09:05
I only had to apply one layer of
newspaper it does have a little bit of a00:09:10
rough texture to it so that could affect
when you're painting it and stuff but on00:09:14
the other side it is a lot more firm so
it's gonna be probably more durable00:09:18
now with the glue recipe it was much
easier to mix and to apply it was a lot00:09:24
more watery and I didn't get as much of
it all over my hands and it was a lot00:09:28
easier to use the downside is I did have
to apply three layers so it took a lot00:09:34
more time it does have a much smoother
surface there isn't a lot of rough edges00:09:39
or anything like that and I don't know
if this is a pro or con but it is a00:09:42
little more flexible so if you're
looking for something like that that00:09:45
might be a pro but if you're not then it
could be a con both of these pretty much00:09:49
had the exact same drying time so that's
not really a factor at all and you can00:09:54
see that the one with the flower is much
lighter so that could actually work as a00:09:59
primer as well so it's really going to
come down to you know what type of00:10:03
project are you doing and what's going
to be best for you but I do recommend00:10:07
