00:00:10
[gentle music]
00:00:12
This is the Space Shuttle Discovery, on display
00:00:15
at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum
00:00:19
Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia.
00:00:24
The space shuttle is a very unique museum artifact.
00:00:28
To call an artifact by its name makes it feel almost human: Discovery!
00:00:33
From the nose to the top of the vertical stabilizer,
00:00:37
she is amazing.
00:00:39
39 trips to space,
00:00:41
365 total days spent there,
00:00:45
5830 trips around the Earth...
00:00:49
Really staggering numbers.
00:00:51
The list of missions accomplished using her encompass
00:00:55
all an orbiter could do: launching satellites, probes,
00:01:01
deploying the Hubble Space Telescope,
00:01:03
releasing science payloads,
00:01:06
both return to flight missions after tragic losses.
00:01:16
Standing near Discovery
00:01:17
is humbling and completely awesome.
00:01:21
Today is an unforgettable day, though.
00:01:24
Let's go inside and take a look around.
00:01:26
[upbeat music]
00:01:28
Entering the crew compartment for maintenance and inspections
00:01:31
is pretty complex.
00:01:33
We have help today from former shuttle engineers
00:01:36
using their special tools to open the hatch.
00:01:39
Climbing inside,
00:01:41
as you can see, the space is pretty cramped.
00:01:45
Just inside the hatch, though, is a critical piece of equipment.
00:01:50
We are in the crew compartment of the Space Shuttle Discovery.
00:01:53
One of the questions we get most here at the museum is:
00:01:56
“How do you go to the bathroom in space?”
00:01:58
Well, this is where it happens.
00:02:02
You can see the space shuttle toilet here
00:02:04
looks really complicated to use.
00:02:07
Instead of gravity pulling waste down like it does in a normal toilet,
00:02:11
gentle suction forces things in the right direction.
00:02:16
Like an airline restroom,
00:02:18
this has lots of compartments for supplies and a handle to flush.
00:02:23
Just make sure you always close the door.
00:02:27
Now you cansee the mid-deck
00:02:29
where most of the living and working goes on.
00:02:32
The lockers are storage for everything from science experiments to cameras
00:02:37
to clothes and food.
00:02:43
And of course, there's lots of Velcro.
00:02:50
When the astronauts were ready to eat
00:02:52
they used the warming oven in the galley unit.
00:02:55
Food packets were put inside to warm up while crews worked.
00:03:00
They also used the galley to rehydrate foods
00:03:03
with hot or cold water.
00:03:08
The crew seats are still installed in the mid-deck
00:03:11
folding and unfolding easily for stowage
00:03:14
while the space shuttle was in orbit.
00:03:23
Like a race car,
00:03:24
astronauts had serious safety harnesses to wear
00:03:27
during launch and landing.
00:03:36
Getting up to the flight deck is challenging in one G.
00:03:40
On orbit, just floating up was far easier than using a ladder.
00:03:46
Right now, we're on Discovery's flight deck, and I'm in the seat
00:03:49
where the commander of the mission would sit,
00:03:51
and one thing you definitely notice up here are just how many switches,
00:03:55
screens and gauges there are.
00:03:58
The flight deck is the upstairs part of the orbiter
00:04:01
where the commander and pilot maneuvered the vehicle during flight...
00:04:06
...and to a safe landing.
00:04:15
Each seat has a control stick, just like an aircraft
00:04:18
and smaller knobs to make smaller movements.
00:04:23
Lights keep the space well lit in all conditions,
00:04:26
especially the 16 nights experienced in a single 24 hour period.
00:04:33
Almost everything can be controlled from here,
00:04:36
including work in the payload bay.
00:04:40
Windows out the back
00:04:41
and above help crew at the aft flight control station
00:04:45
use the robotic arm and dock with other vehicles.
00:04:51
The payload bay doors are closed on Discovery,
00:04:53
but you can see them open if you visit the Space Shuttle Atlantis
00:04:57
at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
00:05:01
For as much as it could do, Discovery isn't very modern,
00:05:05
with all of the hundreds and hundreds of switches.
00:05:09
The airlock is where spacesuits were stored.
00:05:13
Here astronauts would put on their spacesuits
00:05:15
and take them off once they were done.
00:05:18
You can see the control equipment for getting the suits ready
00:05:21
and they're upside down.
00:05:23
Astronauts in suits could see better by leaning over
00:05:26
rather than turning their heads.
00:05:30
Above is the centerline camera.
00:05:32
It helped line up the airlock top hatch with the International Space Station
00:05:36
for proper docking.
00:05:40
Welcome to Discovery's payload bay.
00:05:45
This is the area from which Hubble,
00:05:47
ISS modules, and other satellites would be released into space.
00:05:54
Here along the starboard side
00:05:56
you can see the robotic arm boom, an extension to the arm,
00:06:00
which is now on display outside of Discovery.
00:06:04
The yellow handles are for astronauts to move during a spacewalk
00:06:08
hand over hand all around the payload bay,
00:06:12
and the camera in the center helps keep an eye on their work.
00:06:16
Looking back at the airlock, this space is gigantic:
00:06:20
as big as a school bus.
00:06:23
Under the white blankets are lots of vehicle systems.
00:06:27
You can see one section open
00:06:29
here near the airlock.
00:06:32
The doors overhead were open most of the orbiter's time in space.
00:06:36
They have radiators on them to shed all of the heat
00:06:39
created by operating Discovery.
00:06:43
Thanks for joining us on this look inside Discovery!
