that i began thinking this house has00:06:40

opening a brothel they did think i was00:06:45
opening a brothel this used to be the00:06:47
territorial capital guthrie was the00:06:49
territorial capital of oklahoma and it00:06:51
was the state capitol00:06:53

um i used to be a school teacher and i00:06:56
you know if you teach high school you00:06:58

while they were living next door00:08:18
in the meantime he had amassed a huge00:08:21
fortune in the oklahoma territory he had00:08:24
the very first cotton gin he was the00:08:26
founder of cotton oil company he had00:08:28
three mercantile stores eight grocery00:08:30
stores and the first car dealership so00:08:33
he was wealthy wow and in 1906 they ran00:08:36
out of room with those six children and00:08:38
they commissioned this house to be built00:08:41
and it was built by the same gentleman00:08:43
who is here building the carnegie00:08:44
library00:08:46
so it's well constructed well engineered00:08:48
it was started in 1906 it was completed00:08:52
in 190700:08:53
they moved in and had six more children00:08:56

died early on in his probably infancy i00:09:08

her and she died at the turn of the00:09:28
century they were using opium and00:09:30
codeine and cough syrups and many00:09:32
children died as a result and she died00:09:35

move to enid where they had a mercantile00:13:59

house so they leased it to smith's00:14:03

and uh as a matter of fact they guy who00:14:16

during the summer it would be so hot and00:17:45
we're just now having it having it done00:17:47
but it's 2 000 square feet and right now00:17:50

so i go downstairs to the basement first00:22:31
thing i did is went to the basement and00:22:33
i seen that and i was like oh my god00:22:35
this really happened it was really weird00:22:37
and i couldn't ever shake it but i felt00:22:39

ghost at that point did you know where00:22:42
she saw the yes i used to have i used to00:22:46
have two big tables down here where she00:22:48
would be folding clothes00:22:50
and they were out this far and she would00:22:52
be folding clothes here00:22:54
and she would see this man this is how00:22:56
she's described it to me that kind of a00:22:58
peripheral vision thing of somebody back00:23:01
there and we call that the back of the00:23:03
basement but that's actually the front00:23:04
of the house but we call it the back of00:23:07
the basement so she would see some man00:23:09
back there and she told me uh later that00:23:12
he had a tall hat on and that he was00:23:14
smoking a cigar00:23:15
so who do you think that would be mr00:23:17
houghton really we found a picture of00:23:19
him but apparently00:23:21
i think he wore00:23:23
from what i could understand what she00:23:24
was saying he had a tall hat on and she00:23:27
would be folding and she'd see this00:23:29
she'd turn and it wouldn't be there but00:23:31
she turned back and it would be kind of00:23:33
a peripheral vision thing00:23:35
so this is kind of a hot spot of00:23:37
activity in the house is the basement00:23:39
the basement and the third floor00:23:41
basement of the third floor yeah00:23:43
remember the child who died here was00:23:45
seven years old and that the third floor00:23:47
was their playroom00:23:50
and that's where they spent their00:23:51
winters yes the children played there or00:23:54
down here they were the boys would have00:23:56
