Но отличался от него по многим параметрам, основным из которых была производительность. Если ДОН-1500 имел производительность на уборке зерновых 14 т/ч, то ДОН-1200 чуть более 11 т/ч. Ключевые отличия этого комбайна от комбайна ДОН-1500 следующие: - Ширина молотильного барабана на этом комбайне составляет 1184 мм, при таком же диаметре, что и у базовой модели 800 мм. - Соломотряс уменьшился на 1 клавишу, при этом длина клавиш осталась прежней 4100 мм. - Площадь очистки на решетном стане соответственно тоже уменьшилась и составляет 1,96 м2 верхнего и 1,63 м2 нижнего решета. - В качестве силовой установки комбайн ДОН-1200 получил четырехцилиндровый турбированный двигатель СМД-23 или СМД-24 номинальной мощностью 170 л.с. Запуск двигателя производился пусковым двигателем. - Привод комбайна был такой же, как и у комбайна ДОН-1500, а именно – гидростатическая трансмиссия. - Конструкционная масса комбайна с жаткой 6 м и копнителем составляли 11,5 тонн, что примерно на 1300 кг меньше, чем масса комбайна ДОН-1500 в такой же комплектации.
