00:00:07
well welcome to a new Harry's garage
00:00:10
video you see we're back at Ian's
00:00:11
Terrell's workshop for another Espada
00:00:14
update accompanies his part for some of
00:00:17
the parts have come back from machining
00:00:19
things we're just going to discuss some
00:00:21
details for house Springs and stuff like
00:00:22
that and there's been some work on the
00:00:24
Espada as well on the actual body in the
00:00:27
roof etc but I also want to look at this
00:00:29
this is a lovely Miura for unless that
00:00:33
was recent sold by RM Auctions in London
00:00:36
ultra original condition it was quite a
00:00:40
remarkable car I went down to see the
00:00:42
sale because I was really keen to see
00:00:44
what this is gonna make it's been sort
00:00:45
of owned for some time in one family and
00:00:49
he is also doing some work on that so I
00:00:50
feel while we're here it'd be hard to
00:00:53
resist just a quick look round that as
00:00:55
well anyway let's go down and see what
00:00:56
I've got to show on the bench he's gonna
00:00:58
show us what he's been up to in the last
00:01:00
few weeks
00:01:01
well here we are again yeah part 4 yes
00:01:04
yeah it's alright now but since I was
00:01:09
last here and painted and just yeah yeah
00:01:12
well we've done the e than the heads so
00:01:15
these are no skimmed and we've also done
00:01:18
the inserts in the valve guides so the
00:01:22
that's the right amount of plein air
00:01:24
right so you don't actually push the
00:01:27
valve guys all the way out you actually
00:01:29
machine but yeah there's a type of
00:01:31
insert it's called a K line system and
00:01:34
you actually get rid of the centre of
00:01:36
the valve guide put a new sleeve in the
00:01:39
gap in within so it's like it's leaving
00:01:41
a sleeve and then green that out and but
00:01:44
you have to be careful because you don't
00:01:45
want it off don't want it off first
00:01:47
senator suit when she started to turn to
00:01:50
the seat too much I mean look lovely as
00:01:52
well so we've got new seats in as well
00:01:54
they just know they're just just recut
00:01:56
the interesting thing is we can reuse
00:01:59
the original valves on this the cars I
00:02:03
don't know don't think I've explained
00:02:06
this but on the difference between
00:02:07
Ferrari and Lamborghini antisera
00:02:10
yeah and the Ferrari and Maserati used
00:02:13
sodium-cooled exhaust valves oh yes
00:02:15
which are suppose stem yes with a shot
00:02:18
of sodium in them which flies up and
00:02:20
down the valve and it transfers with the
00:02:22
heat from the head to the top of the
00:02:24
stem and then dissipates through the
00:02:25
engine through the valve spring the
00:02:28
sodium is bouncing up and down at a
00:02:29
hollow bit like a bicycle pump sort of
00:02:31
Hollow exactly and that technology was
00:02:35
first used in aeroplane engines in the
00:02:37
1930s high performance air opponent it
00:02:40
fighters and things but it carried on
00:02:42
right not right the way through Ferrari
00:02:44
and Maserati used it Ferrari and
00:02:46
Lamborghini chose a better way of doing
00:02:49
it which is this is solid right it's I
00:02:53
actually had one metallurgically
00:02:55
analyzed some years ago out of a
00:02:57
Lamborghini engine to make sure so this
00:02:59
is austenitic stainless steel and the
00:03:02
head is coated in stellite act but
00:03:05
they're solid
00:03:06
so these they break and the other ones
00:03:08
break so didn't canals break yeah
00:03:10
because they're a weak point are they
00:03:11
they're all there yeah just there right
00:03:14
so the head falls off them in the
00:03:15
combustion chamber in about four seconds
00:03:18
you've got got a death rattle par
00:03:19
excellence yeah and and that's why you
00:03:22
systematically change exhaust valves on
00:03:24
Ferraris and Maseratis the SM was famous
00:03:26
for it the Citroen SM change exhaust
00:03:29
valves the MARAC and all the Ferrari
00:03:31
Daytona Dino boxer so and there is
00:03:35
another one but we don't need to change
00:03:36
them a VW Beetle I had one for valves
00:03:38
breaking one of those that rely on you
00:03:41
and they swap - so do fill valves and in
00:03:42
quickly swap back again same thing I
00:03:44
didn't really know but they just that's
00:03:47
great so that yeah no problem so they're
00:03:50
super tough I will go again I just love
00:03:52
how the number
00:03:53
as well because they're for a regional
00:03:55
build aren't they because they are
00:03:56
mostly area yeah yeah so all all came
00:04:00
back and didn't find anything all work
00:04:02
no they're a zero it's an absolutely
00:04:04
lovely the water jackets in good Nick
00:04:05
and so there we're just waiting for and
00:04:09
some valve springs yeah no you've gone
00:04:13
after our last conversation I said revs
00:04:16
to eight thousand and I don't think it
00:04:18
does you you've got that Miura there and
00:04:21
you were saying well let's have a look
00:04:22
at the valve spring so you think you
00:04:23
thought they're different than well yeah
00:04:26
you threw me into a bit of a flux bin
00:04:28
menu so it's mentioning a thousand red I
00:04:30
didn't quite know what to say so I
00:04:32
thought nothing was probably that's yes
00:04:33
so looking at other responders the on
00:04:37
this on your car a series - there's no
00:04:39
red line on the rev counter on the
00:04:42
series 3 there is it's 7200 yeah I mean
00:04:46
yeah I know it's fairly nothing nobody
00:04:48
ticketed exactly so what I decided to do
00:04:51
is do a bit of homework into this so the
00:04:54
two thing is the two main differences
00:04:56
between an Espada and the likes of
00:04:58
Emmure or a Countach which revved to
00:05:00
eight Bryce is the Pistons which we
00:05:04
mentioned last time yes they're custom
00:05:06
not really up to the job of high reps on
00:05:08
this model on an Espada
00:05:09
whereas on a Miura retreat ash they've
00:05:11
forged yes and the other limitation is
00:05:14
the valve springs right because the
00:05:16
valves bounce about 7,300 which is why
00:05:19
an Espada can't really go anymore and so
00:05:23
they're the original valve springs I've
00:05:24
been working with a valve spring okay a
00:05:27
performance valve spring company up in
00:05:29
Lancashire right there the original
00:05:31
valve springs and as you can see they're
00:05:32
separate they easily move inside each
00:05:35
other whoops so you could have you got a newer
00:05:37
spring here yes here's when we took out
00:05:40
earlier nice so the inners are the same
00:05:42
right but the difference between the
00:05:45
mirror and the
00:05:46
I started about seven millimeters in
00:05:49
length actually so that it's not it's
00:05:51
the same strength spring as it were it's
00:05:54
just longer it is but under load I've
00:05:58
actually got the load readings there's
00:06:00
quite a difference
00:06:01
Oh is there yeah so this is all to do so
00:06:05
when you get to higher res 712 bounces
00:06:07
when this thing is getting a resonance
00:06:09
and it's Bentley it's not coming up
00:06:11
quick enough to be hit again it's the
00:06:13
velvety seat and bounces off the seat
00:06:15
tires that way because the springs not
00:06:17
strong enough to pull the clothes right
00:06:18
so you end up with stone the spring so
00:06:21
you're suggesting if I want to read like
00:06:23
a lure to 8,000 I want this more respect
00:06:25
this ends you yeah you can do it with
00:06:28
yes I tweaked in about spring correct
00:06:30
it's an excellent go is there any
00:06:34
downside or things it would add to the
00:06:36
residence side yeah you've got it
00:06:39
so here this isn't Miura can and this is
00:06:42
a nice body cam all right
00:06:45
the aspire to come valve lift in the
00:06:48
1960s in Italian high-performance
00:06:51
engines was about nine millimeters right
00:06:53
for very high-performance engines
00:06:55
towards the end of the 1960's it went up
00:06:57
to ten so this is the Miura valve
00:07:00
lifters just about bang on ten mil as
00:07:02
far as is nine just to get more air
00:07:04
through the valve
00:07:05
yes but all this puts more pressure on
00:07:07
the cam lobe right heavier Springs yes
00:07:10
bigger lift okay so these detail the
00:07:13
habit of wearing whereas the espada ones
00:07:15
don't right so there is a bit of a but
00:07:19
looking thousands and thousands of miles
00:07:21
here yeah
00:07:23
saddle was a vowel so I was attached
00:07:26
when would you start see we're at 50 no
00:07:30
you know I can't attend to about 20,000
00:07:34
miles so no really yeah oh gosh so
00:07:37
you're slightly putting me off putting
00:07:39
bigger Springs on but I suppose it's a
00:07:40
combination of spring and lift is
00:07:42
exactly so I mean yeah if we put some
00:07:46
and the problem is people do go over the
00:07:48
top because it wasn't an exact science
00:07:50
in the nineteen sixties it was just like
00:07:52
yeah but nowadays we can drill down to a
00:07:55
more efficient sort of so it's not too
00:07:57
strong that's what I'm saying right it's
00:07:59
just so you know uh okay okay
00:08:01
do the valve springs need replacing
00:08:03
anyway would we do it yes because they
00:08:06
started life at one hundred and ninety
00:08:09
six point two Newton's Ryan they're now
00:08:11
down to one hundred and seventy seven
00:08:13
eighty seven so they've gone down ten
00:08:14
percent in strength anyways so we do
00:08:16
need to do yeah okay an old one like
00:08:22
this is realistically about sixty
00:08:24
thousand miles is it yeah where's done
00:08:27
they I think this engines done about
00:08:29
eighteen thousand bars what's the right
00:08:30
to that so okay so we'll upgrade the bow
00:08:33
Springs and then I can enjoy a few more
00:08:35
ribs than absolutely enormous part of
00:08:38
would have maybe six well I was combined
00:08:40
with the Pistons but yeah was going to
00:08:42
act for yeah and the four Pistons then
00:08:44
we've ordered those up but they're not
00:08:46
here not here they're coming from
00:08:48
America well so what what else we've
00:08:51
done we've done some very shiny parts
00:08:53
yeah well we we sent these away for
00:08:56
blasting so these have been blasted it's
00:09:00
tiny particles of glass between 100 and
00:09:02
hundred and fifty microns diameter yeah
00:09:04
with the really high pressure water and
00:09:06
it brings them up like that is it
00:09:08
because that looks as though it's been
00:09:09
painted in and they make it dirty or
00:09:11
something doesn't know but that is
00:09:12
actually there's actually bare are like
00:09:13
are beautiful isn't it isn't it and that
00:09:17
will aid really well well it'll just you
00:09:20
know it's not going to suddenly go off
00:09:21
after six months or something and
00:09:23
there's lots of placing going on the
00:09:25
norm at this fast as BIOS but this has
00:09:27
all been stripped Marcus has built these
00:09:29
up and that it obviously gets stripped
00:09:31
down to component parts and as you
00:09:33
crankshaft pulley yeah
00:09:37
stepping back 15 years isn't it it's
00:09:39
another worker and look at this I just
00:09:45
at megget casteism it's too nice to go
00:09:48
on the car maybe that's these three
00:09:49
needs to be by the fireplace doesn't
00:09:51
move tiny threads yeah and six of
00:09:55
something what about you they're smaller
00:09:56
they are for the therefore the baffle
00:09:59
the oil pickup goes here yeah and then
00:10:02
you got baffle plates to try and contain
00:10:04
the on splashing round when you enjoying
00:10:06
yourself yeah creating g-forces yeah
00:10:08
let's just make it and that again hasn't
00:10:12
been painted that's just the bare alloy
00:10:13
yeah we've used to put that down that's
00:10:16
that's great bit of weight in it isn't
00:10:18
that yeah why something's going on
00:10:20
yeah and here of my lovely cam killers
00:10:23
yes they've been sprayed with exactly
00:10:27
the right finish of crackle black high
00:10:29
temperature paint and they shouldn't be
00:10:31
to show any actually a lot of people
00:10:33
make the mistake of making them too
00:10:34
shiny what quite a few customers of
00:10:37
Lamborghinis did in period was to ask
00:10:40
for this and the Lamborghini name to be
00:10:43
highlighted in shiny aluminium so what
00:10:46
they used to do is literally just get a
00:10:47
file and file the paint off off but that
00:10:51
isn't some of them left the factory like
00:10:53
that but generally speaking that's
00:10:55
factory finish so it's up to you but but
00:10:58
they did actually do it in period it was
00:11:00
very for a special customer they just
00:11:02
brought that exactly yes that's quite
00:11:05
decisions efficient I think well might
00:11:06
have to do that one yeah no there's
00:11:08
gonna be any blocks all all done that's
00:11:12
all painted ready to go so what's the
00:11:14
block being way no you just push the
00:11:17
liners out so there's no real work to do
00:11:19
all that there's no no just a painting
00:11:21
yeah check the mating surfaces make sure
00:11:23
there's nothing horrible going
00:11:25
right yeah there's my turbo that isn't a
00:11:28
turbo it's a water pump is a water but
00:11:33
if you call it a turbo but it was an air
00:11:36
horn to horn when you get to seventh
00:11:39
this is the relative revolution with
00:11:41
that so linkages yeah that's it so the
00:11:49
engine and you're waiting on pistons yes
00:11:51
pets are dumb heads are done I can see a
00:11:54
crank and they're all liners are out
00:11:57
there are they getting ready to go on
00:11:58
yeah yeah we've got a finished size for
00:12:01
the balls from the piston people oh okay
00:12:03
give the right clearance of the running
00:12:06
cleats from the new Pistons so you do
00:12:08
those made to measure the doses are
00:12:10
actually made to measure once you've
00:12:11
done that
00:12:12
absolutely ago so how much over our
00:12:14
latest and it works out the finished
00:12:17
bore is eighty two point five instead of
00:12:19
82 right which gives you roughly an
00:12:22
extra 50 cc so you really know that's an
00:12:26
extra scooter pushing behind back you
00:12:28
really notice the difference a couple of
00:12:30
yeah sounds great yeah it's just loose
00:12:35
yeah as you'd loved if it to look you
00:12:38
know this engine is always a pretty NZ
00:12:41
but it's just getting prettier
00:12:42
yes it's just lovely to resurrect it
00:12:44
back to its former glory really we're
00:12:47
gonna do them slowly with the mana force
00:12:48
as well away
00:12:49
yes I've sent them away to be this
00:12:52
company called desert berserko tech who
00:12:53
do
00:12:54
it's they don't just bless them and
00:12:56
paint them now she did like a ceramic
00:12:58
coating the him in imprints itself for
00:13:01
ones about it babe when looking at it
00:13:03
into a metal structure so I was hoping
00:13:05
to be back for this but they're not like
00:13:07
this well yes here's one we made earlier
00:13:11
yeah and if they've gone for that as
00:13:14
well then yes well that's how it came in
00:13:17
actually this is from Switzerland this
00:13:18
engine from when restoring the car
00:13:21
this is au Rama same the same engine
00:13:25
yeah yeah but this operation doesn't it
00:13:28
they're really nice
00:13:30
that's just what I want not Lots all
00:13:31
flashy or some people just ya know
00:13:34
you've been doing things to the rest of
00:13:37
the car
00:13:38
yes and the roof I saw was out so it's
00:13:40
gone look at that so we have a almost a
00:13:43
convertible a Spartan sir the one and
00:13:46
only we're missing yeah and I thank God
00:13:50
it's not that rain of last time mhm that
00:13:53
was you do yeah but I I mean I had a
00:13:57
quick look at this before and I just
00:13:58
couldn't get over the workmanship it's
00:14:01
unimaginable how it's not just a hole
00:14:03
Kutty with having this lip and how
00:14:06
they've done it I have no idea yeah it's
00:14:09
actually a really nice job yeah so it's
00:14:13
it's been sort of you know bent like
00:14:15
that and then like that it's it's really
00:14:17
well how do you do a cool cut isn't it
00:14:20
you can't even see the join hmm and
00:14:24
there's a fence normally on it's part of
00:14:25
that yeah examine sorry for the spent
00:14:28
air from the car anybody wondering what
00:14:30
this is this is my electric aerial
00:14:32
because I didn't want to area on the car
00:14:34
so I had this one and it worked an
00:14:36
absolute treat you only really see it
00:14:38
now because it's roofs out but that
00:14:39
normally sticks to the top and does a
00:14:41
very good job but yeah so you and the
00:14:44
Krays done a great job on this
00:14:45
headlining
00:14:46
he has a lot to work with mister but I
00:14:49
have my doubts I really did yeah
00:14:52
how's he gonna do this cuz it's hardly
00:14:53
even met under here no but he's he's
00:14:56
managed to stretch it and stick it and
00:14:57
it looks gonna be there actually and I'm
00:15:01
really pleased how this is yeah he's
00:15:03
coming together and you've sort of I
00:15:05
always think walking out this tinted but
00:15:07
looking at it now is such a spectacular
00:15:09
interior but I'm quite tempted to go so
00:15:14
we're not clear with some sort of Sun
00:15:16
Yat tints or yeah I don't know film that
00:15:19
will protect you from direct sunlight
00:15:20
but it does look great with such a big
00:15:23
hole isn't it is yeah but it's put it in
00:15:26
a way it makes it one step closer to the
00:15:28
Mars our office yeah well just look
00:15:30
spectacular
00:15:31
yeah just source of strength oh there is
00:15:34
yeah big just take it off
00:15:39
I saw it flying in that's it he's quite
00:15:41
deeply sit in the sky it's droopy nose
00:15:44
yeah I didn't realise you're going to
00:15:50
get this in but I went down to the RM
00:15:52
auction when it was sold because I just
00:15:54
never seen a more original one and here
00:15:57
you are ripping it apart yeah well
00:15:59
somebody has to
00:16:01
what's that here I want to just say at
00:16:03
this point as well in you votives be
00:16:06
really kind on the comments on this
00:16:08
Espada series of vids and it's yeah he's
00:16:11
thought wow I'm ago doing a YouTube
00:16:13
channel so there is now a Terrell
00:16:15
classic workshop channel on YouTube and
00:16:18
the first video as you started work on
00:16:21
this isn't that's right and I think it's
00:16:23
a great series I'm gonna really you know
00:16:25
can't wait to see what happens you're
00:16:27
never gonna see a mirror stripped down
00:16:28
one as original is this I think make it
00:16:31
thank you
00:16:32
so what's the instructor what you're
00:16:33
gonna do here and well it was I thought
00:16:36
nothing of it you know gives me cars
00:16:38
sell at auction all the time I kept an
00:16:39
eye on them of course yeah and I got an
00:16:42
email just out of the blue from her the
00:16:45
gentleman who's bought the car never met
00:16:46
him before never spoken to him and he
00:16:48
said how much would you charge me to
00:16:50
restore my mirror
00:16:51
throughout my civil
00:16:52
fortunately you know having done for you
00:16:55
yeah I know where we're up to with them
00:16:57
so he said okay fine
00:16:59
you've got the job well then it's the
00:17:01
next email he said to me what would you
00:17:03
do to the car and I said little as
00:17:05
possible really yes and he said fine
00:17:07
you've got the job the next thing it
00:17:08
arrived from London so just a privilege
00:17:12
because it I saw the family down there
00:17:15
and it was yeah it was absolutely
00:17:16
worship in this car and they they yeah
00:17:19
it wasn't high it was it was bought when
00:17:23
they were a valley where you could just
00:17:24
use them and it was just bought to you
00:17:26
it wasn't it that was the same beauty of
00:17:28
this thing yeah they've gone mad that
00:17:30
gone mad in value yeah but this is
00:17:33
probably one of the most original left
00:17:36
so we're trying to go for the
00:17:38
conservation rather than restoration as
00:17:40
part of it really but yeah it's it's a
00:17:44
lovely thing to the engine yeah 1969 so
00:17:52
it's all original you know all the
00:17:54
original gaskets that they used in
00:17:56
period and things like that so that's
00:17:57
how we can tell describe and the way
00:17:59
everything comes apart it's just like
00:18:01
think you know everything just really
00:18:03
undoes beautifully
00:18:04
yeah because it was you know it's born
00:18:07
fine but it was stored reasonably well
00:18:09
listen it wasn't yeah yeah just look at
00:18:12
the front front clamshell off as well
00:18:14
yeah tell me about a different scene in
00:18:16
s and SV there's something different
00:18:19
fundamentally is nearing the
00:18:20
construction yeah well the first and
00:18:23
first 125 muir is the p4 hundreds of
00:18:27
ridge right this bit was made out of
00:18:28
nought point nine mil spec chassis gauge
00:18:30
steel then really quite sit up very thin
00:18:34
right and they were so bad yeah jacked
00:18:37
up on one corner the whole car would go
00:18:39
right see corkscrew
00:18:41
and so that's not this group that yeah
00:18:44
so John pehle Dilara the brilliance John
00:18:46
Turner of DeLorean after hundred and
00:18:47
twenty five cars he upped it to one mill
00:18:49
and that made a huge difference right
00:18:51
then so that's what this would be made
00:18:54
of but this is a one millimeter thick
00:18:55
rat chassis yeah
00:18:57
then on the SV because they always they
00:19:00
always battled with structural problems
00:19:01
on the mirror on the SP they made
00:19:03
triangular gusset plates that went down
00:19:05
like that okay and with these wizzy
00:19:08
little holes in them just to try and
00:19:11
stop the whole thing that moving and
00:19:14
I'll come over when we're looking around
00:19:15
my father you were saying this
00:19:17
suspension is the same Jana Miura he
00:19:20
brought a nice murder yeah
00:19:22
looking at this I notice he hasn't got
00:19:25
ventilated discs lightly Espada yeah
00:19:28
well I mean only does 170 miles an hour
00:19:30
what this the world-first on the Espada
00:19:33
was the ventilator yes that's right I
00:19:35
actually thought I just how much were
00:19:38
they when they were in newbs I had a
00:19:39
suspicion that you're the sort of the
00:19:44
Espada was more expensive and look at
00:19:47
this I this is a motor from February
00:19:50
1971 the Espada lists ten thousand nine
00:19:54
hundred and fifty pounds and the Miura S
00:19:57
ten thousand eight hundred and sixty
00:19:59
pounds so this is a cheaper car than the
00:20:02
Estrada
00:20:04
probably ten times than honey at least
00:20:07
yeah but also that we look at a Ferrari
00:20:10
Daytona nine thousand one hundred and
00:20:13
sixty seven so you could you could buy
00:20:16
if he bought in a Daytona you you'd
00:20:20
saved yourself nearly two thousand
00:20:22
pounds on earth Espada you can party by
00:20:27
jacket for two thousand pounds so that
00:20:28
there's Dino five thousand four hundred
00:20:30
pairs if only we'd know it yeah how much
00:20:33
you would have made that yeah
00:20:35
but they made roughly the same amount of
00:20:37
detail mrs. Espada they were both both
00:20:38
about 1,200
00:20:40
although the Espada was a much longer
00:20:41
production yeah I do wonder how many
00:20:44
espadas are actually left because they
00:20:46
all got broken for parts yeah just
00:20:49
I remember seeing more advertising the
00:20:51
exchange in Mart in 1982 with a Toyota
00:20:54
Celica two-liter engine that's just it
00:20:58
was ahead of his time
00:21:00
yeah well it's been great to catch up
00:21:04
see what's going on at the workshop I
00:21:06
think the next time will be coming will
00:21:08
be when that engine is started to be
00:21:09
assembled
00:21:10
but for now check out Ian's channel
00:21:13
again Kiril classic workshop I'll put a
00:21:15
link down below to so you can see where
00:21:17
it is but I hope you enjoy this video if
00:21:19
you have there'll be more videos coming
00:21:21
on very soon

Description:

The engine in my Lamborghini Espada is currently undergoing a full rebuild after it started losing cooling water when we were on the Lamborghini Espada 50th tour last September. Here in part 4, the components are back from cleaning and machining and Iain explains how we can make the engine closer to Miura spec.
