00:00:00
workbenches are a necessity in every
00:00:02
Workshop no matter how basic or complex
00:00:05
the rubo workbench is one of the most
00:00:07
popular workbenches amongst Woodworkers
00:00:09
around the world but not much has
00:00:11
changed since its conception several
00:00:13
hundred years ago my goal in this video
00:00:15
is to reinvent this classic bench but
00:00:17
nothing could prepare me for the level
00:00:19
of detail that went into this piece in
00:00:22
fact this is the most complicated thing
00:00:24
I've ever made more difficult than this
00:00:27
this and this what you're about to see
00:00:30
is 2 and 1/2 months of meticulous work
00:00:33
which has resulted in possibly the most
00:00:34
over-the-top workbench you've ever
00:00:36
[Music]
00:00:43
seen if it ain't broke don't fix it this
00:00:47
is the sentiment I agree with to a point
00:00:50
why waste time and energy on something
00:00:52
that doesn't need it but this can
00:00:54
sometimes lead us to overlook potential
00:00:56
improvements a common view with
00:00:58
traditional workbenches is that they've
00:01:00
been around for centuries so their
00:01:01
workholding Solutions are tried and true
00:01:04
and traditional joinery is still
00:01:06
relevant today if you choose to use it
00:01:08
so why bother changing the features of a
00:01:10
workbench I feel like this confines our
00:01:13
creativity to what's already available
00:01:15
it can limit imagination and slow down
00:01:18
one's progress I'm at a point in my
00:01:20
career where I don't want to be hindered
00:01:22
in any way I want to get my ideas out
00:01:25
immediately without any fuss so I want
00:01:27
this workbench to be packed full of
00:01:29
every possible feature I can think of in
00:01:31
order to work as efficiently as possible
00:01:34
so let's now figure out all the
00:01:36
different features for the new
00:01:38
workbench so this is my current setup it
00:01:42
does have a tail Vie which I like so
00:01:44
let's add that to the list it also has a
00:01:47
leg style Vice which I like apart from
00:01:50
the hardware but let's add a leg Vice to
00:01:53
the list as well another thing that I
00:01:54
dislike about this setup is the dogs now
00:01:57
I have a single dog that goes into one
00:01:59
of the these holes depending on the
00:02:00
length of the piece of wood but these
00:02:02
holes fill up with sawdust so another
00:02:04
thing I want to add to the list is popup
00:02:06
dogs other clamping Solutions I'm after
00:02:08
is to be able to clamp flat panels
00:02:10
without any interference to the face the
00:02:12
ability to clamp tapered legs now I
00:02:15
think a Mox and vice will do this quite
00:02:17
well although I do think there'll be an
00:02:18
issue with racking but we can sort those
00:02:21
issues out
00:02:22
later I also need to clamp unusual
00:02:24
shaped pieces like you may have seen in
00:02:26
my curved bench seat these types of
00:02:28
pieces are very difficult to clamp as
00:02:30
there's no flat surfaces bunch of Curves
00:02:33
and different angles so we'll have to
00:02:34
figure out a solution for that I'm also
00:02:36
after a dedicated spot for measuring and
00:02:39
marking tools so I think a tool tray
00:02:41
will suit me well for this bench another
00:02:43
big feature for this bench is I want it
00:02:44
to be on Wheels so it can be easily
00:02:46
maneuvered around the workshop so I'm
00:02:48
going to have to come up with some
00:02:49
hidden wheel solution within the base of
00:02:51
the rubo workbench a few other things
00:02:53
that I'm after is a pop-up plane stop
00:02:55
sliding dead man I also want this
00:02:57
workbench to look good so I'm thinking
00:02:59
of using some contrasting Woods some
00:03:02
custom hardware and some custom
00:03:04
dovetails now rubo workbenches tend to
00:03:06
come in full tops or split tops now I
00:03:09
like both of these so I've got to figure
00:03:11
out a way to try and incorporate both
00:03:13
into this rubo design okay so that is
00:03:15
the long list of features for this bench
00:03:17
so let's get into
00:03:21
it I've decided to build this bench out
00:03:23
of hard maple a big thank you to Britain
00:03:26
Timbers for supplying the maple for this
00:03:27
workbench you can check out their
00:03:29
website below for some quality
00:03:30
information about different Timber
00:03:35
species so I'm currently working on the
00:03:38
bench top this is where you're going to
00:03:40
see the full top and the split top come
00:03:42
together you're also going to see the
00:03:44
beginning of the vice that will clamp
00:03:46
all those unusual shapes I'm after the
00:03:49
idea behind this Vie has been inspired
00:03:51
by a shoulder style Vice which is
00:03:53
commonly used on Scandinavian style
00:03:55
benches but it has an extra feature that
00:03:58
makes it incredibly vers at
00:04:10
all this groove has a dovetail profile
00:04:14
that will allow me to slide in different
00:04:15
shaped plates that can be custom made to
00:04:18
fit whatever piece I'm working on I have
00:04:20
somewhat of a universal plate at this
00:04:22
point which you will see later
00:04:26
on now this style of Vice has a lot of
00:04:29
force that pushes away from the
00:04:31
workpiece and even though all these
00:04:32
laminations are strong once glued
00:04:34
together the clamping force of this Vice
00:04:37
will separate the boards from one
00:04:38
another over time so I've added some
00:04:41
threaded Rod through the benchtop that
00:04:43
allows me to loosen and tighten the
00:04:45
tension as the seasons
00:04:49
[Music]
00:04:51
change it was surprising just how time
00:04:54
consuming this part of the build was the
00:04:56
preparation for each one of these
00:04:58
individual boards took a lot of time as
00:05:00
I wanted to ensure that were not only
00:05:02
dead flat but also I wanted to release
00:05:05
as much of the tension in each board as
00:05:07
possible this step is incredibly
00:05:09
important if you want to end up with a
00:05:11
dead flat top once everything is
00:05:14
[Music]
00:05:17
done now I feel like it's important for
00:05:19
me to outline what to expect from this
00:05:21
bench as I've already had a bunch of
00:05:23
comments on Instagram as well as
00:05:25
visitors to my shop during the build say
00:05:27
that this bench is too nice to use you
00:05:30
see people have different theories on
00:05:32
what a workbench should be used for and
00:05:34
what it should look like many believe
00:05:36
that a bench should be simple and
00:05:38
shouldn't be elaborate or fancy after
00:05:40
all it's a place to work and I agree but
00:05:44
I believe a great workpace breeds great
00:05:46
work if you're proud of your shop you'll
00:05:49
create pieces that you're proud of so
00:05:52
let me just say right now this workbench
00:05:54
is going to be the Rolls-Royce of
00:05:57
workbenches understandably it may not be
00:05:59
all that relatable it's expensive and
00:06:01
over the top with clamping solutions
00:06:03
that may be redundant to some but this
00:06:06
bench is intended to be an exploration
00:06:08
of ideas and a way to solve some of the
00:06:10
issues I face when it comes to producing
00:06:13
Furniture the reason for putting so much
00:06:15
time and effort into this bench is
00:06:17
because this is a representation of my
00:06:19
work and the skills that I've developed
00:06:21
over the years and what better place to
00:06:23
show off my skill set then on the very
00:06:25
bench that will be used to create each
00:06:27
piece from now on
00:06:40
you can see from this SketchUp file just
00:06:42
how the bench top is going to work the
00:06:44
full top is on the left and the split
00:06:46
top is on the right and the split top
00:06:48
allows me to extend part of the top
00:06:50
beyond the rest of the bench which will
00:06:52
all make sense a little later this
00:06:55
SketchUp file is available for download
00:06:57
over on my patreon I'll leave a link
00:06:59
below
00:07:20
now that we have the full top and Split
00:07:22
Top done it's time to move onto a detail
00:07:24
that I've been wanting to try out for a
00:07:26
very long time which is one of the more
00:07:29
indulgent features of this
00:07:31
[Music]
00:07:51
bench Dov tails on a rubo play a very
00:07:54
important role as once again the pushing
00:07:57
pressure from the tail Vice can separate
00:07:59
the end cap from the rest of the top so
00:08:02
the dovetail needs to help lock this in
00:08:04
place the design of these dovetails are
00:08:07
purely aesthetic but I've always wanted
00:08:08
to create these rounded Dove Tails I'm
00:08:11
not sure if there's a name for them but
00:08:13
I'm going to refer to them as shark
00:08:15
tails from now
00:08:16
[Music]
00:08:18
on another theory I have on shop
00:08:20
furniture and workbenches is that this
00:08:23
is a time for you to experiment and try
00:08:25
different techniques by no means a
00:08:27
dovetail is new to me but creating them
00:08:29
with templates certainly is plus
00:08:31
understanding the limitations of these
00:08:33
sharks tows was interesting as the
00:08:35
radius of the curves are important in
00:08:37
relation to the tools you own as you're
00:08:39
going to need a narrow enough chisel to
00:08:41
get right into the sharp
00:08:43
[Music]
00:08:51
Corners now I mentioned earlier that
00:08:54
nothing could prepare me for the level
00:08:55
of detail that went into this piece and
00:08:58
I'm not just saying that for effective
00:08:59
storytelling this bench was 2 and 1/2
00:09:02
months of non-stop construction which
00:09:04
resulted in 25 hours of filmed footage
00:09:07
all shot in 4k which totaled 3 Tab and
00:09:11
trying to condense all of that
00:09:13
information into a single YouTube video
00:09:15
isn't easy unfortunately I've had to cut
00:09:17
a lot of processes and details out to
00:09:20
make this video but if you are
00:09:21
interested in seeing each and every step
00:09:23
of the construction of this bench I've
00:09:25
edited all the footage down into a
00:09:27
detailed 3our 12p part series over on
00:09:30
patreon with no voice over on music just
00:09:33
shop sounds this will give you a much
00:09:35
better idea of what's going on for the
00:09:37
entirety of this build not to mention
00:09:39
the fact that I have a separate
00:09:40
45-minute review video on the completed
00:09:43
workbench where I discuss each and every
00:09:45
feature in
00:09:46
[Music]
00:09:49
detail now you may be wondering how on
00:09:52
Earth could I spend all this time
00:09:53
building filming and editing this
00:09:55
project when I have a business to run
00:09:58
well this is all thanks to these fine
00:09:59
folks over on patreon who are allowing
00:10:01
me to push my boundaries on pieces like
00:10:04
this workbench they've been following
00:10:06
along for this entire build as I post
00:10:08
update videos and quick tip videos from
00:10:10
each and every piece I make giving an
00:10:12
inside look into my workshop incredibly
00:10:15
an extra 20111 patrons have signed up
00:10:18
since my last video which is absolutely
00:10:20
mindblowing to me I love the fact that I
00:10:23
get to share my knowledge with each and
00:10:24
every one of them in the hopes that they
00:10:26
can push their woodworking to an even
00:10:28
greater level if you are interested in
00:10:30
knowing more I'll leave a bunch of links
00:10:32
below that have previews of what to
00:10:34
expect from
00:10:37
patreon now just in case the sharktails
00:10:40
weren't detailed enough I decided to add
00:10:42
a champer to all the edges this is an
00:10:45
interesting detail and you might be
00:10:46
thinking it's to cover up any gaps in
00:10:48
the joinery but in actual fact it'll
00:10:50
show mistakes even more but I think it's
00:10:52
a great looking detail that accentuates
00:10:54
the shape of the shark tailes plus you
00:10:57
may notice later on that the chamford
00:10:59
detail gets carried around the entire
00:11:01
top as well to help create a slight
00:11:03
separation between the top and the end
00:11:18
caps it's interesting to think that the
00:11:21
next time I work on dovetails I'll be
00:11:23
using this very bench that I'm currently
00:11:25
building to make them throughout this
00:11:27
entire build I couldn't help but think
00:11:29
of all the interesting things I'm going
00:11:30
to make on this bench in the future
00:11:33
including this Walnut desk which will be
00:11:35
the next video now wait a minute you
00:11:38
might be asking yourself how did you
00:11:39
make that completed desk on a bench that
00:11:41
isn't even finished yet and this is
00:11:43
where I could tell you that this bench
00:11:45
was finished months ago and I've been
00:11:47
building on it ever since but no I'm not
00:11:50
that well organized this desk is just a
00:11:53
model and it'll be my next video so be
00:11:56
sure to subscribe if you want to see how
00:11:57
I make the real thing
00:12:00
now we're almost at the end of building
00:12:01
the top as I'm about to attach the end
00:12:03
caps it's important to note that the end
00:12:06
caps are only glued at one end of the
00:12:08
bench top and the remainder of the cap
00:12:09
is fixed in place using some bolts with
00:12:12
elongated holes this will allow the top
00:12:14
to expand and
00:12:16
[Music]
00:12:24
[Applause]
00:12:27
contract
00:12:37
[Music]
00:12:55
[Applause]
00:12:57
o
00:12:59
[Music]
00:13:02
next we're going to move on to the most
00:13:03
complicated Vice on this entire bench
00:13:05
the moxen vice which does have some
00:13:08
design issues that will need to be
00:13:09
solved before moving
00:13:13
[Music]
00:13:20
on now I mentioned earlier that I had
00:13:23
some concerns about this moxen VI and
00:13:27
the reason for that is going to be
00:13:29
because the way I want to use it
00:13:31
generally speaking Mox and VI are used
00:13:33
by clamping boards in the center in
00:13:37
between the two screws that way you can
00:13:40
get even clamping pressure from the top
00:13:43
of the jaw to the bottom of the jaw but
00:13:45
the way I want to use this moxen Vice is
00:13:48
mostly going to be with angled legs that
00:13:52
are pretty much the length of this Vice
00:13:55
which means they're going to be sitting
00:13:56
above the screw and that presents an
00:14:00
issue that is called racking and this is
00:14:04
not acceptable because it's providing
00:14:06
uneven clamping pressure on the
00:14:08
workpiece it's not going to hold it
00:14:10
securely enough and it might also Dent
00:14:13
the workpiece as well so I need to come
00:14:15
up with a solution that's going to
00:14:16
provide some even support on the
00:14:18
underside of the moxen vice and I think
00:14:21
I have an idea so I'll get into that
00:14:23
next and see how we
00:14:25
[Music]
00:14:27
go
00:14:32
[Music]
00:14:40
this Vice has to be the most detailed
00:14:42
and complicated Vice of the entire bench
00:14:45
but it also has a bunch of different
00:14:47
uses not only will it allow me to clamp
00:14:49
angled legs but it will also allow me to
00:14:52
clamp wide flat panels without any
00:14:54
interference to the surface like clamps
00:14:56
or hold fast now as I said said there is
00:14:59
an issue with racking due to the lack of
00:15:01
support to the bottom of the jaw so I'm
00:15:03
going to add some brass round bar that
00:15:05
fits inside of a brass round tube this
00:15:08
will supply enough support to stop the
00:15:10
bottom of the Jaw from moving freely
00:15:12
under
00:15:13
tension now you may have seen earlier
00:15:15
before the benchtop was glued together
00:15:17
that there were some grooves in the
00:15:18
bench top these are the hous the screws
00:15:21
from the MOX advice once again all the
00:15:23
footage of these extra details are over
00:15:25
on my patreon now before we go any
00:15:28
further let me talk about the hardware
00:15:31
for every Vice on this bench I'm using
00:15:33
benchcrafted Hardware they didn't
00:15:35
sponsor this video I paid for everything
00:15:37
and even though I tagged them in a bunch
00:15:39
of photos on Instagram I never heard
00:15:41
anything from them which tells me
00:15:42
they're probably not a big fan of how
00:15:44
I've customized their Hardware
00:15:46
particularly when I made my own custom
00:15:48
brass handles you'll see more on that
00:15:50
later the hardware I've used for this
00:15:52
moxen Vice isn't the benchcrafted moxen
00:15:54
vice it's actually the benchcrafted High
00:15:57
vice which comes as a full kit or like I
00:15:59
did you can purchase the screw only I've
00:16:02
used this because the screw is slightly
00:16:04
longer and the Hand wheel and screw move
00:16:06
together unlike the moxen kit where the
00:16:08
screw is stationary and the Hand wheel
00:16:10
moves another issue with MOX advices is
00:16:13
the jaw doesn't move with the handle
00:16:16
wheel which is kind of a pain I've seen
00:16:18
people use Springs that fit over the
00:16:20
screw to help move the jaw when
00:16:22
unscrewing the viice but I prefer this
00:16:24
idea instead I've drilled a hole through
00:16:27
the screw and inserted a small brass pin
00:16:30
this pin rests against a custom brass
00:16:32
washer which all sits inside the vice
00:16:35
jawer once the handle gets fitted to the
00:16:37
screw the drawer is now held in between
00:16:39
the pin and the wheel meaning it moves
00:16:42
with the hand wheeel this is a small
00:16:44
detail but it will make using the moxen
00:16:46
vice much more enjoyable and don't worry
00:16:49
I'll show all the different VI and how
00:16:51
they're used at the end of this
00:16:53
[Music]
00:16:57
video
00:16:58
[Music]
00:17:06
with the Mox and vice done it's now time
00:17:08
to give this giant top a base which due
00:17:10
to the split top and full top design
00:17:12
will take some careful design
00:17:14
considerations to ensure this entire
00:17:16
bench doesn't fall apart not to mention
00:17:18
some veneer details that will help to
00:17:20
lighten the overall look of this

BAS

[Applause]
00:17:33
[Music]
00:17:40
I'm using Morse and 10 and joinery for
00:17:41
this base as it's going to help provide
00:17:43
the strength needed not only for the
00:17:45
heavy bench top but also for the side to
00:17:47
side forces from planing and bashing
00:17:49
away at
00:17:54
material I feel like Woodworkers are
00:17:57
naturally patient people
00:17:59
after all it takes time to create
00:18:00
beautiful things and the process of each
00:18:02
plane shaving and every tap of the
00:18:04
Mallet is an enjoyable one where all the
00:18:07
worries in the world just seem to fall
00:18:09
away I always like to refer to the wise
00:18:11
words by John from Lincoln Street
00:18:13
Woodworks who says patience is bitter
00:18:16
but his fruit is sweet that's some truly
00:18:19
wise words there John wait I have never
00:18:23
said that like ever wait really yeah all
00:18:28
right well screw that idea patience is
00:18:30
overrated anyway I mean let's face it
00:18:33
the fantasy of every plane shave and
00:18:35
mallet tap is a compelling one and as
00:18:38
much as I'd like to stroll into my
00:18:39
workshop every morning and gaze at the
00:18:41
wall of hand tools before meticulously
00:18:43
setting up my hand plane and making that
00:18:45
fur shaving as it catches the Morning
00:18:47
Light just isn't possible for me at this
00:18:50
point I have a business to run Furniture
00:18:52
to design projects to build videos to
00:18:55
edit photos to take bills to pay plus
00:18:57
making more intent is
00:18:59
boring not to mention the fact that I
00:19:01
have 14 of these things to
00:19:04
make that's why I've used power tools
00:19:07
and templates to create these joints
00:19:09
doing it this way is quick repeatable
00:19:11
and accurate and it leaves me more time
00:19:13
to add in more creative elements like
00:19:16
[Music]
00:19:19

00:19:20

00:20:13
[Music]
00:20:27
for
00:20:30
[Music]
00:20:52
now the reason for adding in these
00:20:53
carved leg details is to help lighten
00:20:56
the look of the rubo workbench which can
00:20:58
tend to look a little bottom heavy as
00:21:00
the base needs to be chunky to provide a
00:21:02
solid foundation for the work area and
00:21:05
the reason for the veneer well it's a
00:21:07
design feature and as I mentioned
00:21:09
earlier I wanted contrasting woods and
00:21:11
that Burl veneer is really going to pop
00:21:14
especially once you see what I do to the
00:21:16
leg
00:21:19
[Music]
00:21:27
Vice
00:21:30
[Music]
00:21:41
now even though I wasn't a big fan of
00:21:42
the mortis and tenons I did find these
00:21:44
draw bars enjoyable if you're unsure of
00:21:47
what this is basically placing a dow
00:21:49
through a joint stops The Joint from
00:21:51
ever coming apart but with a draw bar
00:21:53
you slightly offset the hole on the
00:21:55
Tenon which means once you bash the Dow
00:21:58
through the joint the offset hole in the
00:22:00
Tenon pulls the joint closed like an
00:22:02
inbuilt
00:22:03
[Music]
00:22:26
clamp
00:22:28
[Music]
00:22:34
like I said the draw bars act as clamps
00:22:36
to hold the joints together the only
00:22:37
reason why I'm using clamps here is to
00:22:39
help Square everything up before adding
00:22:41
in the
00:22:43
Dows now the design of this base is very
00:22:46
important when it comes to the bench top
00:22:48
as the full top and the split top
00:22:50
require different setups each leg gets
00:22:52
firmly attached to the outside edges of
00:22:54
the work toop the split top needs
00:22:56
support in the center from a rail and
00:22:59
because there's a gap in between the two
00:23:00
sides this will allow for the top to
00:23:02
expand and contract into the center of
00:23:05
the bench the full top on the other hand
00:23:07
will expand and contract over its entire
00:23:09
width if we add a rail like on the other
00:23:12
side then the full top won't be able to
00:23:14
move freely resulting in either a broken
00:23:16
joint or a crack top but I have added
00:23:19
some extra brackets to the legs these
00:23:21
aren't fixed to the top so it can still
00:23:23
move freely and the idea behind this is
00:23:25
to add a little extra support to stop
00:23:27
the bench top from sagging this is
00:23:30
probably Overkill but I thought I'd just
00:23:32
add it just in case I've also added a
00:23:34
bracket to the extended section of the
00:23:37
split top as it does hang over the leg
00:23:39
quite a
00:23:40
[Music]
00:23:55
[Applause] [Music]
00:23:56
bit
00:24:05
now I hope I didn't ruin anyone's
00:24:06
fantasy of what it is to be a woodworker
00:24:09
the reality is woodworking is one of the
00:24:11
most fun jobs you could ever do I
00:24:13
absolutely love it and wouldn't change
00:24:15
my career for anything and to be honest
00:24:18
if I won the lottery tomorrow I would
00:24:20
still be in my workshop building the
00:24:22
most intricate pieces I could possibly
00:24:23
think of after 6 months in Italy of
00:24:26
course it does take patience to be a
00:24:28
good woodworker after all great things
00:24:31
take time I'd say I'm the most patiently
00:24:34
inpatient person you'll ever meet I'm
00:24:37
happy to meticulously obsess over
00:24:39
intricate details but have absolutely no
00:24:42
patience for anything that gets in my
00:24:44
way like a faulty tool or the inability
00:24:46
to clamp a piece properly that's why
00:24:49
this bench is going to massively help my
00:24:51
productivity and general outlook on what
00:24:54
I make from now on and one of those
00:24:57
things that's going to going to make my
00:24:58
workflow easy from this point on is the
00:25:00
customade popup dogs which I can't wait
00:25:03
to show you
00:25:05
[Music]
00:25:26
next
00:25:33
I mentioned at the beginning of the
00:25:34
video that my current workbench is
00:25:36
frustrating because the dog holes fill
00:25:38
up with sore dust so my solution to this
00:25:41
is to have a bench dog in every dog hole
00:25:45
I've decided to go with square dogs as I
00:25:47
like the idea of having a wide flat
00:25:49
surface to clamp with and even though it
00:25:52
would have been much easier to create
00:25:53
the square holes before gluing up the
00:25:56
top I wasn't entirely sure of the setup
00:25:58
until this point but this process wasn't
00:26:01
too difficult it's just a matter of
00:26:03
drilling out the waste then using a
00:26:05
template and guide bearing with a plunge
00:26:07
router one of the main requirements
00:26:10
though is I want the easiest access
00:26:12
possible so I'm going to add a pop-up
00:26:14
mechanism to each bench
00:26:16
[Applause]
00:26:20
dog the common issue that I face as a
00:26:22
professional furniture maker is the
00:26:24
level at which I progress as a maker
00:26:26
isn't on par with the evolution of my
00:26:29
shop what I mean by that is I'm
00:26:31
continually building more and more
00:26:33
difficult things but my workbench and
00:26:35
ways of processing material isn't
00:26:37
handling the new techniques as
00:26:38
efficiently as I would hope the great
00:26:41
thing about this bench is each and every
00:26:43
clamp has multiple uses and the bench
00:26:45
top is going to evolve as I use it I'm
00:26:48
adding in the necessary dog holes right
00:26:50
now but I've kept the templates so I can
00:26:52
add more in the future if necessary not
00:26:55
to mention the fact that I can easily
00:26:56
drill three 3/4 in holes for different
00:26:58
clamps like hold fasts whenever I need
00:27:02
them now these bench dogs are incredibly
00:27:05
easy to make not to mention the fact
00:27:07
that they're also cheap I use off cuts
00:27:10
from the bench's legs and I've simply
00:27:11
just milled the material slightly
00:27:13
smaller than the size of the dog hole
00:27:16
then match the radius of the router
00:27:18
cutter I used to create the dog holes
00:27:21
but where this dog truly shines is the
00:27:23
mechanism this is called a tip on for
00:27:26
doors mechanism by BL
00:27:28
and it's perfect for this application
00:27:30
and at the end of the day making them
00:27:32
this way has turned out much cheaper
00:27:34
than buying pre-made popup
00:27:37
dogs now you may be thinking that this
00:27:39
level of detail is excessive for a
00:27:41
workbench if that's the case then you
00:27:43
may want to close your eyes for the next
00:27:45
part cuz this is where things really
00:27:47
begin to get over the
00:27:56
top this this is a madone burl you've
00:27:59
already seen me use it on the leg detail
00:28:01
but this is where it's really going to
00:28:03
get shown off now is adding veneer to
00:28:06
your workbench Overkill yes but it's
00:28:09
awesome plus I'm going to be using a
00:28:11
finishing technique to this Burl shortly
00:28:14
that is actually a practice Run For an
00:28:15
upcoming whiskey cabinet in fact if you
00:28:17
like this piece then you'll love the
00:28:20
whiskey cabinet this part of the bench
00:28:22
is called the chop and it's the moving
00:28:24
jaw to the leg
00:28:26

[Music]
00:28:32
I feel like this is where the workbench
00:28:33
begins to turn into a fine piece of
00:28:35
furniture and not that I'd ever classify
00:28:38
it as that I obviously have high hopes
00:28:40
that this bench will be the inspiration
00:28:42
for many fine pieces of mine in the
00:28:44
future but if you want to see Fine
00:28:46
Furniture right now I'd suggest checking
00:28:48
out the Australian Furniture maker
00:28:49
Darren oats who creates beautiful pieces
00:28:52
for private commissions and gallery work
00:28:55
not to mention the fact that he has one
00:28:56
of my favorite woodworking channels on
00:28:59
YouTube where he delves into his
00:29:01
processes on veneering Steam bending and
00:29:04
vacuum pressing I will admit his video
00:29:06
pacing may be a little slower than what
00:29:08
you're used to these days but I can
00:29:11
assure you he gives a valuable insight
00:29:13
into the world of professional furniture
00:29:15
making I'll leave a link to his
00:29:17
Instagram and YouTube channel below and
00:29:19
if you like his videos be sure to
00:29:21
subscribe to his YouTube channel
00:29:23
hopefully that will encourage him to
00:29:24
make more YouTube videos cuz let's face
00:29:26
it I want to see
00:29:29
[Music]
00:29:31
more I'm almost positive that if I
00:29:34
didn't get into furniture making I would
00:29:36
have become a luia I'm obsessed with
00:29:38
guitar making and designs and that's
00:29:41
where the inspiration of this chop came
00:29:42
from as the design was inspired by the
00:29:45
headstock from an ianz which is one of
00:29:47
the first electric guitars I ever
00:29:49
[Music]
00:29:52
own this staining technique is a common
00:29:55
one used with guitar making
00:29:57
it's commonly known as popping the Grain
00:30:00
and utilizes the random nature of the
00:30:01
bur to create a beautiful ripple effect
00:30:05
I've also added a slight Sunburst which
00:30:07
is another technique used on guitar
00:30:09
finishes I actually have a 25-minute
00:30:12
video over on patreon where I go into
00:30:14
detail about this entire process I'll
00:30:16
leave a link below with a preview video
00:30:18
of what to expect if you're
00:30:20
interested now once that clear coat goes
00:30:23
on you'll really see that Bell come to
00:30:26
life
00:30:29
[Music]
00:30:45
one of the biggest issues with heavy
00:30:46
workbenches is the ability to move them
00:30:48
when necessary this is way more
00:30:51
important when you have a small shop and
00:30:53
I'm fortunate enough to have a big space
00:30:55
but I still want to move this bench out
00:30:57
of out of the way for when I'm building
00:30:58
large items now you can buy fold down
00:31:01
casters specifically for workbenches but
00:31:04
from what I've heard they're not the
00:31:05
best quality plus I didn't spend all
00:31:07
this time on making my workbench look as
00:31:09
cool as possible to then add these ugly
00:31:12
things to the outside so I've come up
00:31:14
with a solution that not only easily
00:31:16
takes the weight of this 300 kg
00:31:19
workbench but also it's easy to engage
00:31:21
moves freely in any direction and is
00:31:24
completely
00:31:25
hidden these are two motorcycle lifts
00:31:28
having both of them disperses the weight
00:31:30
more evenly and I'll leave a link to
00:31:32
these below I've had to customize them
00:31:34
slightly as well as add some better
00:31:36
quality casters but thanks to the
00:31:38
carefully planned out rail that I
00:31:40
assembled earlier these lifts can bolt
00:31:42
onto the base then it's just a matter of
00:31:45
being able to access the screw mechanism
00:31:47
that engages the
00:31:55
lift this is all going to happen with
00:31:57
the socket handles that came with the
00:31:58
lifts plus a spare one that I have from
00:32:01
another lift that I own as well as some
00:32:03
leftover brass I have from old
00:32:05

00:32:26

00:32:31
[Music]
00:33:00
[Music]
00:33:16
I will admit quite a lot of effort went
00:33:18
into this wheel system it's a bit of a
00:33:20
shame that all this hard work gets
00:33:22
covered up with plywood but the next
00:33:24
section I'm going to work on contains a
00:33:26
mechanism that can be shown off if I
00:33:28
choose to and to be honest I'm quite
00:33:31
proud with how this turned
00:33:37
out this is a gap stop but could also be
00:33:40
called a plane stop or tool rest
00:33:42
depending on what you're using it for
00:33:45
and these are common with Split Top rubo
00:33:47
benches although they are generally
00:33:49
quite cumbersome to use which in all
00:33:51
honesty if it's not easy I won't use it
00:33:55
so I've come up with a solution to have
00:33:57
a pop-up Gap
00:34:02
stop using some carefully design plywood
00:34:05
guides and a template I'm able to
00:34:07
position the guides onto the workbench
00:34:09
and use the template to Route out the
00:34:12
same shape onto the Gap stop the plywood
00:34:15
guides are designed to allow the Gap
00:34:16
stop to be fully removed as well as have
00:34:19
a low profile because one of the main
00:34:22
reasons for having the split top bench
00:34:24
is so I can remove the Gap stop and
00:34:26
place my regular shop clamps down the
00:34:28
center of the bench and I don't want the
00:34:30
guides to interfere with the
00:34:32
[Music]
00:34:43
clamps some of my favorite things about
00:34:45
woodworking is all the intricate details
00:34:48
as well as figuring out solutions to
00:34:50
problems such as the cumbersome Gap stop
00:34:52
and my solution to clamping unusual
00:34:54
shape which you'll see next but but this
00:34:57
Gap stop sliding mechanism is useless
00:34:59
without something to help push it along
00:35:02
so I've used the same Bloom push catches
00:35:04
I used on the bench dogs except I've
00:35:06
used the long version for this
00:35:08
application and I was actually quite
00:35:10
impressed with how this all turned
00:35:13
[Music]
00:35:25
out
00:35:30
[Music]
00:35:33
this part of the bench is probably my
00:35:35
most favorite the fact that the bench
00:35:37
top extends past the rest of the bench
00:35:40
provides a small work surface that
00:35:42
allows three sides of access to smaller
00:35:44
pieces I'm working on plus the shoulder
00:35:47
style viice is going to open up a world
00:35:49
of possibilities as I can now make
00:35:52
custom clamping plates to suit whatever
00:35:54
unusual piece I'm working on this
00:35:57
clamping plate is designed to clamp
00:35:58
pieces that are curved in all different
00:36:01
directions by creating an area that
00:36:03
constantly allows three points of
00:36:05
contact to the workpiece then depending
00:36:07
on the direction of the curvature I can
00:36:10
simply rotate the plate to suit and
00:36:12
because the bench top sticks out past
00:36:14
the rest of the bench I can spoke shave

or carve the unusually shaped piece from
00:36:19
three different sides without having to
00:36:21
unclamp the piece and move it to a new
00:36:25
position like the Mox Vice I've used the
00:36:27
benchcrafted High vice screw only
00:36:30
Hardware kit once again you'll see all
00:36:32
of these VI come together at the end of
00:36:34
the
00:36:37
[Music]
00:36:45
video every feature on this bench has
00:36:47
multiple purposes or uses apart from
00:36:50
this one the sliding dead man it's a
00:36:53
weird name but its purpose is to support
00:36:55
the end of longer work pieces that are
00:36:57
held in the leg Vice and it slides along
00:37:00
a track depending on the length of the
00:37:02
workpiece now because it's a bit of a
00:37:04
onetick pony and probably something I
00:37:06
won't use all the time I want it to be
00:37:08
easily
00:37:25
removable
00:37:36
I've been wanting to purchase a metal
00:37:37
lath for quite some time now but just
00:37:40
haven't gotten around to it but it would
00:37:42
have made this process a whole lot
00:37:44
easier I know I said earlier that I like
00:37:46
solving solutions to problems and trying
00:37:48
to create brass handles without a metal
00:37:50
lath is a problem but I think I figured
00:37:53
out a
00:37:55
solution
00:38:04
[Music]
00:38:21
now this method doesn't provide the most
00:38:23
accurate outcome as each handle is a
00:38:26
little different
00:38:27
but we can just say each one has its own
00:38:30
personality once again this is excessive
00:38:33
work and let's face it custom Hardware
00:38:35
isn't going to improve the usability of
00:38:38
this workbench and it's certainly not
00:38:40
going to help my work progress in the
00:38:41
future but if you've seen much of my
00:38:43
work you will know I love using brass
00:38:46
accents to accentuate certain details
00:38:48
and this bench is intended to be a
00:38:50
Showcase of my work you see I use my
00:38:53
workshop as a showroom for clients as
00:38:55
soon as they walk walk in they can see
00:38:57
that I'm organized and passionate about
00:38:59
what I do and this bench will show them
00:39:02
the level of detail that they can expect
00:39:04
in their own piece not to mention the
00:39:06
fact that they'll know that their piece

will be made on this very

a big shout out has to go to my buddy
00:39:38
Leroy from Reading furniture for CNC
00:39:40
work on this name plate I had a specific
00:39:43
idea for this plate and Leroy really
00:39:45
helped that come to life I'm going to
00:39:47
leave a link to his new website below I
00:39:50
suggest checking it out if you want to
00:39:52
see a succinct and well laid out website
00:39:55
I'll also leave a link to his
00:39:59
Instagram I've got some highly figured
00:40:01
English Sycamore veneer that I'm going
00:40:03
to be using for a future job and wanted
00:40:06
to use some of it for this name plate
00:40:08
the color is identical to Maple and the
00:40:11
fiddleback adds in a new subtle element
00:40:13
to the bench top I've pressed the veneer
00:40:15
onto some Maple and had Leroy CNC my
00:40:17
logo out using an 11° cutter so the
00:40:20
lettering angles back
00:40:22
slightly I'm not usually one to place my
00:40:24
logo in plain sight on a piece but like
00:40:27
I said I had a specific idea that I
00:40:29
wanted to test out one that uses an
00:40:32
existing element from the bench and
00:40:34
incorporates it into my

oilbased finishes tend to turn light
00:41:36
colored Woods Amber which isn't what I'm
00:41:39
after for this Maple I want to keep its
00:41:41
raw natural color I'm going to achieve
00:41:44
this by applying the first coat of oil
00:41:46
with fitties hard wax oil in White Once
00:41:49
dried I apply two coats of the normal
00:41:52
hard wax oil in a matte Sheen the white
00:41:54
finish stops the maple from drastically
00:41:57
changing
00:41:59
color and it's now time to finally watch

00:43:03
there's something inexplicable about
00:43:04
turning an idea into reality this bench
00:43:07
started as just a thought many years ago
00:43:10
as a potential solution to help solve
00:43:12
the issues I have when it comes to
00:43:14
making furniture and that idea is now a
00:43:18
reality but this piece resembles much
00:43:21
more for me not only was this a bucket
00:43:24
list item to build but it also resembles
00:43:26
a shift in my career you see this video
00:43:29
is only my 20th build video here on
00:43:32
YouTube and thanks to the support of all
00:43:34
of you as well as all those on patreon
00:43:37
I'm able to take on less client work and
00:43:39
focus more time on creating videos like
00:43:42
this and even though I'm not entirely
00:43:44
sure where this is going or what this
00:43:46
means one thing I can promise is that I
00:43:49
will continually build the most
00:43:51
challenging things I can think of and
00:43:53
bring you along for the journey
00:43:56
by no means could I have ever imagined
00:43:58
that this would take 2 and 1/2 months to
00:44:00
complete but the long process of
00:44:03
meticulously crafting this bench has
00:44:05
created a sense of Joy within me that I
00:44:07
didn't expect I will admit that the
00:44:10
first scratch on this bench will hurt a
00:44:12
little just like the first scratch on
00:44:13
your new cast iron table saw or on your
00:44:16
brand new car but the reality is this is
00:44:19
a tool and it needs to be used and I'm
00:44:22
excited to see how it will evolve as I
00:44:24
grow as a woodworker
00:44:27
understandably some of you will have the
00:44:28
view that this is overkill that it's
00:44:30
just a place to work but my sentiment is
00:44:33
exactly that this is a place to work
00:44:37
it's a place to be inspired and what
00:44:39
better way to be inspired than by the
00:44:41
very bench you're using to create your

I though it would be done in a matter of weeks yet it took two and a half months of non stop construction. Not to mention the amount of time planning and editing. But all the features turned out as I'd hoped if not better. This bench takes full advantage of the standard tail vise and leg vise but also incorporates a moxon vise, shoulder vice and pattern makers vise, as well as a pop up gap stop and a hidden wheel system which isn't common on a bench like this. Even though this workbench is quite over the top, as mentioned in the video this bench was an exploration of ideas as well as an enjoyable process in which I'll always remember. Shop furniture doesn't always have to be quick and to the point, it can also be an experience. One of my main objectives with this bench is to hopefully trigger ideas within yourself to maybe incorporate into your own workflow . As always thank you so much for your support here on YouTube. The fact that you even watch my videos means I can continue to make more unique builds and share them with you.
