Современный Ереван, единственный город с миллионным населением в Республике Армения, является центром и объектом притяжения не только для всего населения страны, но и для многочисленной армянской диаспоры в разных странах мира. Развитию столицы Армении в немалой степени способствовал продуманный генеральный план, составленный еще в 1920-х гг. талантливым зодчим, академиком архитектуры Александром Ованесовичем Таманяном. Фактически Ереван стал одним из первых советских городов, развитие которого осуществлялось согласно единому генеральному плану. И Каскад является важным элементом этого плана. Через склоны Канакерских холмов должна была пройти система ступенчатых переходов, водопадов и цветников. Каскад должен был связать центральную и северную части города. Проект самого каскада был разработан в начале 1970-х годов архитекторами Дж. Торосяном, С. Гюрзадяном, А. Мхитаряном. На каскаде были запроектированы пять интервалов-террас, представляющих собой музеи под открытым небом, к которым ведут эскалаторы. На террасах предполагалось устроить цветники, фонтаны и бассейны, с них должен был открываться вид на Ереван и на гору Арарат. В конце 1980-х, в связи со Спитакским землетрясением, распадом СССР и Карабахской войной, строительные работы были приостановлены. С переходом к независимости и демократии Армения вступила в период крайних экономических трудностей, и Каскад оставался забытым наследием советской эпохи более десяти лет. В 2002 году по инициативе американского мецената армянского происхождения Джерарда Гафесчяна возобновились работы по строительству, реставрации и благоустройству комплекса. 17 ноября 2009 года в «Каскаде» открылся художественный музей — Центр искусств Гафесчяна. В 2011 году у верхнего яруса «Каскада» открылся центр Шарля Азнавура. А у основания Каскада находится сад со статуями современных скульпторов, где мы тоже прогуляемся...
