00:00:02
the first tip in our browser security
00:00:04
video is a best practice that can be
00:00:06
used for anything on your system and
00:00:08
that's to always use trusted sources
00:00:11
when you're downloading and installing
00:00:13
new software if an attacker wants to
00:00:15
infect your system they'll add the
00:00:17
malware to a browser extension and then
00:00:19
you'll download the extension and enable
00:00:22
it in your browser
00:00:23
if you do need to install an extension
00:00:25
for your browser don't install it from
00:00:27
links that are in an email or from a
00:00:29
third party website you should go
00:00:31
directly to the browser developers
00:00:33
website and make sure you download the
00:00:35
extension directly from that site
00:00:38
it's also a good idea to validate the
00:00:40
hashes for any files that you downloaded
00:00:42
to make sure that the hash on your
00:00:44
machine matches the hash that's posted
00:00:46
on the website
00:00:48
if you've never checked the hash of a
00:00:49
file it's a relatively easy process and
00:00:52
there are applications available for the
00:00:53
command line and the graphical front end
00:00:56
that can help you with this process i
00:00:58
used a program that was available in the
00:01:00
microsoft store and installed that into
00:01:02
my windows desktop so i wanted to
00:01:04
download the latest distribution of
00:01:06
ubuntu linux i went out to the ubuntu
00:01:09
website where i could find the isos
00:01:11
available to download and with those
00:01:13
isos i also found sha256 sums these are
00:01:16
the hashes for these iso files
00:01:19
i then downloaded the live server
00:01:22
amd64.iso
00:01:24
and it has this long hash value that
00:01:26
starts with echo 8 and ends in 2 delta
00:01:29
4. i then started the hash checker
00:01:32
program that i installed from the
00:01:33
microsoft store and i had it check the
00:01:35
hash for the iso that i downloaded and
00:01:38
you can see the shot 256 is listed here
00:01:40
at the bottom it starts with echo 8 it
00:01:43
ends in 2 delta 4 and everything else in
00:01:46
the middle matches the hash that was
00:01:47
posted on the ubuntu website
00:01:50
this means the file that is stored on my
00:01:52
local machine is exactly the same as the
00:01:54
file that is stored on the ubuntu
00:01:56
website and i've now verified that i
00:01:58
have exactly the same file as the ubuntu
00:02:01
site
00:02:03
when you're installing a new program or
00:02:05
an extension to your browser onto your
00:02:07
computer you have to make sure that
00:02:09
you're installing it from a trusted
00:02:11
website this might be the chrome web
00:02:13
store or the microsoft store or any
00:02:15
other third-party site where you really
00:02:18
do trust the information that's on that
00:02:20
site what you don't want to do is
00:02:22
install software that comes from a
00:02:24
third-party website or from links that
00:02:26
appeared in your email any software you
00:02:28
install could potentially have malware
00:02:31
inside of it so installing from known
00:02:33
good websites is always the best choice
00:02:35
when installing new software
00:02:37
the attackers know that it's very common
00:02:39
for us to customize our browsers with
00:02:41
extensions so they're going to make sure
00:02:43
their malware is ready to go whenever
00:02:45
you download that from an untrusted
00:02:47
website
00:02:48
this is a very practical concern because
00:02:51
in march 2021 a study found that more
00:02:53
than 24 google chrome extensions had
00:02:56
malicious software inside of it this
00:02:59
included 40 malicious domains and none
00:03:01
of this was identified by the anti-virus
00:03:04
anti-malware or other security software
00:03:07
when these extensions were installed the
00:03:09
researchers immediately found credential
00:03:11
theft screenshots and key logging and
00:03:14
data exfiltration once this software is
00:03:16
on a system it effectively has the same
00:03:18
control that any browser might have and
00:03:21
was able to collect quite a bit of data
00:03:23
from a susceptible machine
00:03:25
as a good rule of thumb you should
00:03:26
always have a healthy distrust of any
00:03:29
software that you're installing and you
00:03:30
should always keep very good backups in
00:03:33
case you do happen to accidentally
00:03:35
install some malware you can easily
00:03:37
revert back to a clean configuration
00:03:41
every website you visit tends to have
00:03:43
some type of username password or other
00:03:46
type of authentication and being human
00:03:49
we tend to reuse a lot of these username
00:03:51
and passwords when we go from site to
00:03:53
site unfortunately that means if there's
00:03:56
a breach with one website that means
00:03:58
attackers now have credentials that
00:04:00
you've used on many other websites as
00:04:02
well one way to prevent this is to use a
00:04:04
different password for every site you
00:04:07
visit and one way to manage this process
00:04:09
is through the use of a password manager
00:04:11
or password vault this vault will keep
00:04:14
track of all of the sites you visit it
00:04:16
will provide different passwords for
00:04:18
every site and it will make sure that
00:04:20
all of that information is encrypted and
00:04:22
stored on your machine some of these
00:04:24
password vaults will also synchronize
00:04:26
this information to the cloud so that
00:04:28
you can have the same password vault
00:04:30
across all of your systems using this
00:04:32
password manager we can now have
00:04:34
different passwords for every single
00:04:36
site and the passwords themselves can be
00:04:38
very strong and very difficult if
00:04:40
someone was trying to perform a brute
00:04:42
force attack there's many different
00:04:43
types of password vaults available some
00:04:45
that are perfect to use at home and
00:04:47
others that are designed for use at work
00:04:51
our browsers are actually quite good at
00:04:53
identifying suspicious websites and if
00:04:55
it does run across a problem with the
00:04:57
communication it will give you a message
00:04:59
telling you things like this connection
00:05:02
is not private the browser is looking at
00:05:04
the certificate on the web server and
00:05:06
validating everything that's contained
00:05:07
within that cert you can also look at
00:05:10
these certificate details usually by
00:05:12
clicking the lock that's inside of your
00:05:13
browser and you could look to see
00:05:15
whether the domain name is expired or
00:05:17
maybe using the incorrect domain name
00:05:19
maybe the certificate is not properly
00:05:21
signed or signed by an untrusted
00:05:23
certificate authority or maybe the time
00:05:25
and date on your device is incorrect and
00:05:28
that's causing a conflict with the
00:05:29
certificate that's on the web server the
00:05:31
example i'm using here is a certificate
00:05:33
that is specifically incorrectly
00:05:36
configured to provide examples of how
00:05:38
your browser might react and if you
00:05:39
would like to try this on your browser
00:05:41
you can visit badssl.com
00:05:44
when we look at the certificate details
00:05:46
this clearly shows us in the browser
00:05:47
that this is an untrusted root
00:05:49
certificate authority which is why we're
00:05:51
seeing the message that this site may
00:05:53
not be trusted
00:05:55
most browsers include a pop-up blocker
00:05:57
that prevent a website from adding
00:05:59
additional windows to your screen this
00:06:02
is something that's usually enabled by
00:06:04
default inside of your browser but you
00:06:06
do have control on whether you'd like to
00:06:07
turn that on or turn it off generally
00:06:09
this is an option that should stay
00:06:11
enabled but if you're troubleshooting a
00:06:12
problem with a website you may need to
00:06:14
temporarily disable it during the
00:06:16
troubleshooting process there's many
00:06:18
legitimate websites that use pop-up
00:06:20
windows extensively so you may need to
00:06:22
configure your browser to block pop-ups
00:06:25
but enable them for certain websites and
00:06:28
you can specify what those exceptions
00:06:30
might be within the browser settings
00:06:32
themselves
00:06:34
our browsers collect a lot of data you
00:06:36
can look through the history where
00:06:38
you've been browsing you can look at any
00:06:39
saved passwords and you can list all of
00:06:41
the files that you may have downloaded
00:06:43
inside of that browser but there may be
00:06:45
times when you'd like to remove some of
00:06:47
that data from the browser unfortunately
00:06:49
you have the option within the browser
00:06:51
to clear browsing data this might be
00:06:53
your browsing history your download
00:06:55
history any cookies and other site data
00:06:57
and any images or files that may be
00:06:59
cached inside of the browser this is
00:07:02
usually one of the troubleshooting steps
00:07:03
when you have an issue with a
00:07:05
third-party website they'll ask you to
00:07:07
delete all of your private data and then
00:07:09
try to access the site again
00:07:11
if you would like to limit how much
00:07:13
information is being gathered from your
00:07:15
browser you might want to start in a
00:07:16
private browsing mode this is a mode
00:07:19
that does not collect as much data as
00:07:21
the normal browsing mode which is not
00:07:23
only good for privacy but very good for
00:07:25
troubleshooting these website issues
00:07:27
when you close this private browsing
00:07:29
mode a lot of the data that would
00:07:31
normally be stored is deleted from your
00:07:33
system there's no history information
00:07:35
that's stored you don't have any data on
00:07:37
what files may have been downloaded and
00:07:39
anything that would have been in a cache
00:07:41
is deleted so the next time you open a
00:07:43
private browsing mode you're effectively
00:07:45
starting with a clean slate which is
00:07:47
perfect for troubleshooting
00:07:49
some of the information we store in a
00:07:51
browser is important especially if we're
00:07:53
using browsers across multiple systems
00:07:55
we may want to store bookmarks or store
00:07:57
passwords that we can then use across
00:07:59
any browser session fortunately many of
00:08:02
these browsers can synchronize this
00:08:03
information in the cloud so you can open
00:08:06
up a browser in many different devices
00:08:08
but still have access to all of your
00:08:10
browsing history your favorites your
00:08:12
bookmarks and anything else that you've
00:08:14
stored in that browser session
00:08:16
our browsers are getting quite good at
00:08:18
blocking advertisements and other
00:08:20
targeting information for example your
00:08:23
browser may be able to hide the ip
00:08:24
address you're using or prevent any
00:08:26
tracking of where you go between
00:08:28
websites this may or may not be how
00:08:31
you'd like your browser to work some
00:08:32
people like to visit a website and then
00:08:34
have that website recognize them the
00:08:36
next time they visit other folks would
00:08:38
prefer to be private every time they
00:08:40
visit a website on the internet
00:08:42
fortunately you have a way that you can
00:08:44
customize exactly the way the browser
00:08:46
should operate especially in relation to
00:08:48
ads in microsoft edge you have the
00:08:50
option to set tracking prevention to a
00:08:52
basic a balanced or a strict mode and
00:08:55
then you can customize exactly the way
00:08:57
the browser will react in each of those
00:08:59
modes
00:09:10
you
