00:00:17
welcome back to the channel and welcome
00:00:19
finally to my van conversion tour video
00:00:24
I
00:00:25
have been living in this Ford Transit
00:00:28
extended roof extended length for a few
00:00:30
months now
00:00:31
I decided to go with this specific van
00:00:34
because I'm about six two and a half and
00:00:37
with the insulation on top and the
00:00:39
insulation underneath the floor I could
00:00:41
stand up perfectly fine which feels
00:00:43
quite luxurious compared to the car I
00:00:45
used to live in before this the other
00:00:47
thing is none of the Vans would be big
00:00:51
enough for me to be able to sleep
00:00:52
width-wise so having the extended length
00:00:54
made it so that I could fit about a
00:00:56
queen size bed platform which is perfect
00:00:58
for more than one person
00:01:00
the other thing is as compared to
00:01:02
Mercedes Ford vans can get serviced
00:01:04
anywhere and because I used to live in a
00:01:06
Ford I'm pretty familiar with Ford's and
00:01:09
the way they operate in their
00:01:10
dealerships so starting up front one of
00:01:13
the absolutely crucial things that I
00:01:16
needed in a van was a separation between
00:01:19
the front and the back this door right
00:01:21
here
00:01:22
I I got some inspiration uh off of
00:01:26
Instagram people that had done similar
00:01:28
Barn Door style access to the front I
00:01:31
thought it was a cool aesthetic touch
00:01:32
with the uh you know the wood and white
00:01:34
color combination that I was going for
00:01:37
stylistically and so this gives perfect
00:01:39
access to the front cab and is able to
00:01:42
insulate with about an inch and a half
00:01:44
of insulation on all three of these wall
00:01:45
panels so that the Heat or the cold
00:01:48
stays much better contained in the back
00:01:50
since I have very few Windows really
00:01:52
just one in the whole van conversion
00:01:54
most of the heat transfer happens up
00:01:57
front and so having some kind of barrier
00:01:58
was crucial as well as being able to
00:02:01
lock access from the front to the back
00:02:04
making it much more difficult to break
00:02:06
in this also gives me a great place to
00:02:09
come in
00:02:10
my keys and move on because I've got a
00:02:13
perfect place to be able to hang up
00:02:14
things like the towels to dry or
00:02:16
raincoats or keys and then I think it
00:02:19
just is a nice aesthetic choice that
00:02:21
goes with the rest of the van conversion
00:02:23
moving on from the entrance is the
00:02:27
beginning of the kitchen here I've got
00:02:29
an outlet back here which is very useful
00:02:31
for any kinds of kitchen appliances or
00:02:34
even just charging my phone
00:02:36
um or other you know camera equipment
00:02:39
type stuff I have three Outlets total in
00:02:41
the van
00:02:42
any more than that felt like Overkill
00:02:44
and all of them have USBC USB and two
00:02:47
normal AC home adapters
00:02:51
here I've got
00:02:53
my propane seller which has the propane
00:02:57
tank which is fitted to be able to drain
00:02:59
excess propane out through the bottom of
00:03:01
the van as well as water jugs some
00:03:04
cleaning supplies dish soap and uh paper
00:03:07
towels
00:03:10
on top of that I have
00:03:13
just a you know random junk drawer kind
00:03:16
of thing about some coins I've got some
00:03:18
uh you know I've got a lighter some
00:03:20
Chargers some files and things like
00:03:23
aluminum foil and Ziploc bags
00:03:28
moving on to the sink
00:03:30
I decided to go with the slightly larger
00:03:33
sink because I have plenty of a counter
00:03:36
space here on this side as well as more
00:03:37
counter space on the back and I know
00:03:41
it's a very popular faucet but I think
00:03:42
it looks great three things that I
00:03:44
really wanted to have with my kitchen
00:03:46
sink were a light up button right here
00:03:49
that operates the pump
00:03:51
so that if I leave it on while I go to
00:03:53
sleep or leave it on overnight I can
00:03:55
very clearly see it because this
00:03:56
illuminates the whole front
00:03:57
and
00:03:59
um and the reason you don't want to
00:04:01
leave a pump like that on is because
00:04:03
when you're driving fluctuations will
00:04:06
turn the pump on and off and it's set to
00:04:08
be able to turn off automatically at 45
00:04:10
PSI So Random fluctuations while driving
00:04:12
could screw that up
00:04:15
um
00:04:16
the other thing I really wanted to have
00:04:18
was a filtered water spigot like this
00:04:22
which I can fill up water bottles from
00:04:23
or even when I make certain dishes that
00:04:26
require a lot of water I like to use it
00:04:28
from there it's uh filtered straight
00:04:30
from underneath then the other thing I
00:04:32
really wanted to have but it was a
00:04:34
little bit more complicated was setting
00:04:36
up hot water
00:04:38
generally speaking you have two options
00:04:40
for hot water you can either go with
00:04:41
propane you can go with electric the
00:04:43
problem with electric is that they
00:04:45
generally draw at least 1.5 kilowatts
00:04:48
which is a lot of power when we're
00:04:49
talking about off-grid electrical
00:04:51
systems
00:04:52
so I decided to use a 1.5 kilowatt water
00:04:56
heater but in association with a
00:05:00
timer switch that allows me to set the
00:05:02
amount of time 10 minutes is usually
00:05:03
fine to heat up the three gallons of hot
00:05:06
water and it works perfectly fine it
00:05:09
puts a drain on the power but it doesn't
00:05:11
drain any more electricity than I would
00:05:13
need and only running it for 10 minutes
00:05:15
is perfectly fine moving on to the
00:05:18
kitchen stove I chose this one because I
00:05:21
thought it went well with the uh you
00:05:22
know the black sink and the black faucet
00:05:24
and I think the glass is similar to the
00:05:27
outside of the window that I have on the
00:05:30
outside of the van and this is just a
00:05:32
normal propane stove
00:05:34
connected to the same propane system as
00:05:37
my heating
00:05:39
um which runs out of the propane Locker
00:05:41
this strobe is excellent so far I really
00:05:43
just got it for the Aesthetics but it's
00:05:45
nice to have something that is able to
00:05:46
self light like that
00:05:48
um and it's been Problem free ever since
00:05:50
I've had it underneath the stove here
00:05:52
I've got my utensil drawer you know
00:05:55
typical things typical kitchen knives
00:05:58
and spoons and spatulas
00:06:01
underneath that I've got
00:06:04
my pots and pans the lids and some
00:06:07
sponges
00:06:10
and then I just go to the electronics
00:06:12
drawer down here with my various
00:06:14
electronic things all of these drawers
00:06:16
have latches to be able to close which
00:06:19
are perfectly strong enough to be easy
00:06:21
to open but don't open when I'm driving
00:06:23
and I've been down pretty much some of
00:06:25
the bumpiest curviest roads you can do
00:06:27
and I've had absolutely no problems so
00:06:29
far
00:06:31
overhead is food plates and cup storage
00:06:34
although I'm not the most organized
00:06:37
person in the world I uh try my best to
00:06:41
have uh
00:06:43
normal meal type things in here
00:06:46
breakfast things in here tall enough to
00:06:48
put all kinds of uh
00:06:51
cereal boxes and stuff and I think now
00:06:53
that I've lived in here long enough I'll
00:06:55
I know kind of where I want to add
00:06:57
secondary shelves this stuff shakes
00:06:59
around in here however I've had no
00:07:03
problem with any of it falling out
00:07:05
um surprisingly enough it does stay in
00:07:07
here and all of these are held down with
00:07:09
these magnetic latches
00:07:11
and the soft clothes is perfect to
00:07:13
accommodate that works perfectly fine
00:07:16
and it's been Problem free so far I have
00:07:18
had some times where the van really will
00:07:20
shake and one of these things might pop
00:07:23
open and close but things generally
00:07:25
don't fall out on this side overhead
00:07:28
I've got toiletries contact lenses
00:07:31
things like that
00:07:33
one of the things I really wanted to
00:07:35
have is a large fridge and another
00:07:37
countertop surface on the other side
00:07:39
because a lot of Vans will have one you
00:07:42
know long or medium sized counter on one
00:07:44
side and then the other side will be
00:07:45
some kind of bench or seating area and
00:07:49
I know that wasn't gonna work for me
00:07:50
because I I fill up counter space real
00:07:52
quick and even though this is quite a
00:07:54
bit of counter space I still managed to
00:07:56
fill it up pretty quickly
00:07:58
I've got this little lock right here
00:08:02
um because the those latches wouldn't be
00:08:05
sufficient for
00:08:07
um for drawers of this size and then of
00:08:08
course the giant fridge has way too much
00:08:10
inertia so one big uh right turn and all
00:08:14
this stuff is gonna open
00:08:16
um so all you got to do is unscrew this
00:08:18
inside here I've got
00:08:20
this is my biggest drunk drawer so I've
00:08:22
got all kinds of cables Chargers nothing
00:08:24
too special and underneath I have the
00:08:27
giant giant fridge freezer which has two
00:08:31
compartments
00:08:32
one for all of my fridge supplies and
00:08:34
then one for everything that stays
00:08:36
Frozen
00:08:37
this fridge has worked perfectly for me
00:08:38
so far
00:08:40
um even though this is by far the
00:08:41
biggest fridge I've seen outfitted in a
00:08:43
van this size
00:08:44
um
00:08:45
it's pretty much always full and so I
00:08:48
don't think I could really make do with
00:08:49
anything much smaller and so uh and I
00:08:52
think it's fine it's great to be able to
00:08:53
set dual temperature zones however I
00:08:56
want
00:08:57
close it and then just lock that up like
00:08:59
that and it works perfectly well it's
00:09:02
very nice to have extra counter space on
00:09:04
this side right over this counter is
00:09:06
also where I have my switches some to
00:09:09
control the lights here on dimmers for
00:09:12
behind me or in front
00:09:14
and then of course what we're going to
00:09:17
be getting to next my
00:09:19
elevating electronic bed system
00:09:23
which was a must-have for a van because
00:09:26
most van conversions have some kind of
00:09:29
bed that requires being made every time
00:09:30
if you have to sleep lengthwise
00:09:32
especially if it's a combination couch
00:09:34
and bed but I knew that if I had a bed
00:09:38
that I had to make every time I just
00:09:40
would always leave it made and I'd
00:09:42
probably never use the couch this way I
00:09:44
wake up and
00:09:45
press the button and then go about my
00:09:47
day it's it's really really cool
00:09:50
moving on to here this is my closet at
00:09:53
least where most of my clothing is under
00:09:55
the benches I do have plenty of
00:09:57
additional storage but I tend to fill
00:09:59
these up pretty well with my uh socks
00:10:03
and underwear up here I've got my
00:10:06
t-shirts and long sleeve shirts here and
00:10:08
down here I've got my pants
00:10:10
ski pants and some snow supplies as well
00:10:12
as plenty of hanging room for my huge
00:10:15
minus 40 jacket and probably three more
00:10:17
jackets down here that would fit just
00:10:19
fine and then this little cubby I can
00:10:21
put whatever I want in here
00:10:23
all of these are held in with velcro in
00:10:26
the back
00:10:27
that just snaps straight back to the uh
00:10:30
to a little wooden piece back here and
00:10:32
it means that
00:10:34
of all the things that have fallen these
00:10:36
have never even shifted whatsoever they
00:10:37
fit perfectly in here I think they look
00:10:39
nice I just got these at Target and I
00:10:42
decided to build the I wanted to find
00:10:44
some kind of Bin that I knew would be
00:10:46
able to fit the clothes and fit the
00:10:47
aesthetic and then I built the closet
00:10:49
around it to fit these exact sizes and
00:10:52
since they're so snug they tend to go
00:10:54
nowhere and then it was very crucial to
00:10:57
me to have some kind of hanging closet
00:10:58
like this because some of my big jackets
00:11:00
and raincoats I don't want rolled up
00:11:02
especially if they're going to be wet
00:11:03
underneath it I've got space for some
00:11:06
shoes and some carpet down there which
00:11:08
helps absorb any dripping water and a
00:11:10
good place to put my dirty shoes
00:11:13
moving on to the back this ginormous
00:11:16
seating area which could easily sit
00:11:19
you know seven maybe even eight people
00:11:21
because of the room in the back is where
00:11:24
I spend most of my time I've got my
00:11:26
keyboard here which was an absolute must
00:11:28
I've got a nice swiveling table I can go
00:11:31
wherever I want it to
00:11:33
and hold plenty of weight perfect for
00:11:36
things like playing piano or using my
00:11:38
laptop
00:11:40
got plenty of pillows to keep it cozy
00:11:43
and I've got these insets on either side
00:11:46
which one I built it out I had this
00:11:48
planned out because I knew that when I'm
00:11:51
sitting I tend to sit like this or take
00:11:52
up some of the space back here which I
00:11:55
think it's a very natural way to sit
00:11:57
because if you don't your head will end
00:11:58
up hitting against the walls and so
00:12:00
having some kind of inset and it's
00:12:02
insulated behind on either side so
00:12:04
there's plenty of insulation back here
00:12:06
I've had no problems with temperature
00:12:07
whatsoever
00:12:09
and so I this was a must-have and I
00:12:12
think the aesthetic choice is nice with
00:12:14
the uh
00:12:15
with the wood backing all of these
00:12:18
benches
00:12:21
open up to reveal different storage down
00:12:24
here we've got a laundry basket in the
00:12:25
heating system as well as what is
00:12:28
essentially
00:12:29
my garage under here with fishing skiing
00:12:32
all those kinds of supplies and more
00:12:34
clothing in the back here tools
00:12:36
basically all kinds of random spare
00:12:38
things I can't stand up here it's about
00:12:41
five foot seven tall
00:12:43
however generally speaking the table's
00:12:46
right here so it's not like I'd be able
00:12:48
to stand up anyways
00:12:50
and yeah when you're seated here you
00:12:52
really forget that this you know this
00:12:54
faux roof here is really the underside
00:12:56
of the bed
00:12:57
and it's a great place to hang out and
00:12:59
honestly
00:13:01
um I'm very happy I designed it this way
00:13:04
because
00:13:06
if I had to assemble the bed with the
00:13:08
table every single time I know I just
00:13:11
I know that's not me there's no way I'd
00:13:13
be doing that every single day I'm sure
00:13:15
you guys notice my Mountain cutouts here
00:13:18
the Cascade Range here with Mount
00:13:20
Rainier in the middle and the Teton
00:13:23
range in the back and I just thought it
00:13:26
would be a cool little NightLight to be
00:13:27
able to have these LED light strips
00:13:29
which are just AC connected with a
00:13:32
with a USB port right here and I can
00:13:34
control the color and the brightness
00:13:36
from my phone and so generally at night
00:13:39
I'll just have the you know the mood
00:13:40
lighting as a little night light and
00:13:42
then once I'm ready to go to sleep I
00:13:43
just press the button on my phone and
00:13:45
and turn them off
00:13:47
I just think it's a cool little
00:13:49
aesthetic Choice again to kind of
00:13:52
separate the van from what I've seen
00:13:53
other people do and to personalize it
00:13:55
also this shelf here is a lot more
00:13:59
useful than I even anticipated because
00:14:01
when the bed comes down it clears the
00:14:04
space anything that I put up here can be
00:14:06
up here whether the bed's up or down I
00:14:08
don't have to move it unlike things that
00:14:10
are on the table or on the benches which
00:14:11
might be in the way like some of the
00:14:12
pillows it's not much of a problem but
00:14:15
it's nice to just put my laptop here my
00:14:16
phone it's where I end up charging
00:14:18
almost all my electronics and it's nice
00:14:21
to have a bedside table on either side
00:14:23
another must-have for me which if you've
00:14:25
been following the channel for a while
00:14:27
you might know I really like my internet
00:14:29
and my connectivity so I have a cell
00:14:33
boosting antenna which is mounted on top
00:14:35
and can be raised or lowered just by
00:14:37
hopping on the back
00:14:38
uh which relays internet
00:14:41
um and cell service excellent from
00:14:42
outside without it this is just a big
00:14:45
metal box and I get no connection
00:14:47
whatsoever in here um and this boosts it
00:14:50
significantly better than it even would
00:14:52
be in general people kind of have their
00:14:56
perspectives on how this works it will
00:14:58
not give you internet where you don't
00:15:00
have it however
00:15:01
just getting nine feet up on top of a
00:15:04
van is a significant self-service
00:15:06
advantage and just on top of it I have
00:15:08
T-Mobile hotspot Internet so whenever I
00:15:11
have T-Mobile or Roaming Network coming
00:15:14
out of the cell booster I get great
00:15:16
internet speeds inside here and I'm able
00:15:18
to host my own Wi-Fi network which is
00:15:20
which is a big plus especially for for
00:15:23
using your computer on the road having a
00:15:25
hot spot to connect to because the phone
00:15:27
hotspots are are limited and not nearly
00:15:29
as good as this so I would definitely
00:15:31
recommend having Wi-Fi in your van if
00:15:33
that's something that you care about
00:15:35
and both of these have power coming in
00:15:37
through the AC system so they're always
00:15:39
powered so generally speaking funny
00:15:41
enough I can have really bad internet
00:15:43
outside walk in the van and out of
00:15:46
nowhere I have five bars of Lte and I'm
00:15:48
working internet connection
00:15:50
so definitely a must-have for me and
00:15:53
something that I could not live without
00:15:56
I will go into all the technical
00:15:58
specifics and of course demonstrate the
00:16:00
bed and all that in a second
00:16:03
um and then all the technical specifics
00:16:05
and the way the water system works and
00:16:06
all that I'll show you at the end here I
00:16:09
wanted to show you what the ceiling
00:16:10
looks like while the bed is up so you
00:16:12
can see all eight of the dimmable Puck
00:16:15
lights here I uh I picked them because I
00:16:18
like the way the little stainless steel
00:16:19
covers looked and I like the color
00:16:21
temperature as well as my ceiling fan
00:16:24
here which the same as everybody else's
00:16:27
the typical max air fan that's able to
00:16:29
blow air in or out close when it rains
00:16:31
I'm not going to be using that for quite
00:16:34
a while because it's winter time now and
00:16:36
you know me I go places where the winter
00:16:38
doesn't end until July so it's great to
00:16:40
have it's extremely useful when I'm in
00:16:43
hot places like when I was converting
00:16:45
the van I pretty much had this running
00:16:47
the entire time because this is one of
00:16:49
the first things I set up and it's an
00:16:51
excellent system to have because
00:16:54
without being able to exhaust hot air if
00:16:57
you're in a place that's above the
00:16:58
temperature you want it to be inside
00:16:59
there's just no way if you're going to
00:17:01
cook inside a van
00:17:09
back here these curtains serve as a
00:17:13
light softener some nice insulation
00:17:15
between the front and the back and of
00:17:17
course I just think they look awesome
00:17:19
and you know it might be a very van
00:17:22
Lifey choice but
00:17:24
this is one of the last things I put in
00:17:26
but it was one of the first things that
00:17:27
I had planned out
00:17:29
um I've got these little Ties on either
00:17:31
side so on a nice day
00:17:34
not today I would leave this open
00:17:37
and taking the sunshine of course
00:17:40
we should be getting some snow later and
00:17:42
winter is definitely Among Us here in
00:17:43
the Cascade Mountains but it's still an
00:17:46
awesome thing to have
00:17:49
when I was building the van I had all
00:17:52
manner of tools at my disposal
00:17:54
um
00:17:55
so when I finally set off I had to
00:17:57
really uh think of what to bring because
00:17:59
I've made countless repairs already and
00:18:02
I've added things like I I hadn't
00:18:04
installed the internet systems or
00:18:06
anything like that yet and so that's
00:18:09
been something I've had to install on
00:18:10
the road which is not so easy given how
00:18:13
few tools you can fit inside a van but
00:18:17
still worked out just fine
00:18:19
that's why inside here I've got another
00:18:21
little garage mostly fishing supplies
00:18:24
here I've got extension cords hoses
00:18:26
things to fill up my water tank
00:18:28
camping type supplies as well down here
00:18:31
I've got big doordash bag filled with
00:18:33
tools and then on this side another
00:18:37
Husky toolbox here just filled with all
00:18:40
kinds of you know electronic adapters
00:18:41
crimpers things like that things that
00:18:43
I'm sure I'm gonna need today tomorrow
00:18:45
every day pretty much I end up making
00:18:47
repairs
00:18:48
pretty much 24 7. I guess that's the uh
00:18:51
when you build out a more intricate
00:18:54
system that ends up being the reality of
00:18:55
it because on these roads that I like to
00:18:57
take the van a lot of things can go
00:18:59
wrong and do often go wrong but this
00:19:01
here from the back now you can see the
00:19:03
way this uh back pillow works here it's
00:19:06
wide enough to sit two people and
00:19:09
it kind of completes the look this way I
00:19:11
can have some space coming out to really
00:19:13
fill the shape of the van use up maximum
00:19:15
amount of space and efficiency as well
00:19:17
as on the ceiling where the bed extends
00:19:19
out farther than the actual mounting
00:19:21
points uh on the track actuators that
00:19:24
way the bed can be a few inches longer
00:19:26
because a lot of people talk about bed
00:19:28
lengths and about how for example like
00:19:31
oh you're six feet tall so you need a
00:19:32
six foot bed well not necessarily if you
00:19:34
want to be comfortable I tend to sleep
00:19:36
with a pillow like a normal person so I
00:19:38
have like another three or four inches
00:19:40
of space that I want so the bed is about
00:19:43
six foot six six foot seven long so it's
00:19:46
perfect for sleeping somebody my size no
00:19:48
problem my feet never go hang over the
00:19:50
edge or anything like that and it's very
00:19:53
comfortable
00:19:54
you can also see here how my uh I've got
00:19:57
these little trusses here that are able
00:19:58
to support the bed and event of some
00:20:00
kind of failure with the uh with the
00:20:02
with the load control
00:20:04
um so the bed would be able to rest on
00:20:06
here no problem at least temporarily
00:20:08
just so it doesn't crash and break the
00:20:09
entire system the actual bed does stop
00:20:12
as I'll show you in a second just above
00:20:14
a couple millimeters above all four of
00:20:16
those with limit switches that are built
00:20:19
into this trim panel I have on either
00:20:20
side that way it covers up the antenna
00:20:23
cable the coaxial cable and all of the
00:20:25
wiring for the bedlift system
00:20:30
for those of you wondering I started the
00:20:34
van conversion
00:20:35
about a week into June and I finished
00:20:37
about a week before September so it took
00:20:40
me you know a little under three months
00:20:42
about two and a half months to do the
00:20:44
whole conversion
00:20:45
essentially did the whole thing by
00:20:46
myself I had help from some you know
00:20:48
family or friends every now and then but
00:20:50
that was about the time frame that I had
00:20:53
expected and it's definitely doable in
00:20:56
just a summer as long as you are doing
00:20:58
it every single day and I usually didn't
00:21:01
end up coming home till you know long
00:21:02
past midnight two three in the morning
00:21:04
but since I was in Austin Texas in the
00:21:08
middle of summer those were about the
00:21:10
best hours because this was this was a
00:21:12
brutal one and it was over a hundred
00:21:13
just about every single day which meant
00:21:16
it was like 120 in the van a little
00:21:18
miserable but absolutely worth it for
00:21:20
what I was able to get out of it
00:21:23
so let me show you guys how the bed
00:21:25
works now a long-awaited bed so like I
00:21:28
wanted it to be the bed lift system is
00:21:32
as simple as and as intuitive as
00:21:34
possible of course it does go down to
00:21:36
this level here so everything there
00:21:38
needs to be not necessarily cleared but
00:21:41
at least moved a little bit around so
00:21:43
that the bed can compress it down
00:21:46
um and and of course the table has to be
00:21:49
lowered as well this Lagoon table Mount
00:21:51
same one everybody has in their Vans
00:21:54
um is a game changer you're able to just
00:21:57
loosen it up down here with this little
00:21:59
lever
00:22:03
and once it's loosened up you just
00:22:05
lock it
00:22:07
as long as it's below that level then
00:22:09
it's perfectly fine if I want to use my
00:22:11
laptop while I'm in bed
00:22:15
I just set it on one of those shelves
00:22:16
and then the only other step is well I
00:22:19
know I'm going to want those pillows so
00:22:20
make sure that
00:22:22
the big white pillows come with me
00:22:25
pop them on a counter
00:22:27
and then
00:22:30
foreign
00:22:32
's ready to come down then it's as
00:22:35
simple as just pressing the down button
00:22:39
zoom in those lights that I'm not going
00:22:41
to need anymore
00:22:43
and then of course I wait it doesn't
00:22:45
make that much noise much less noise
00:22:47
than the professional systems and it's
00:22:50
pretty quick and it draws barely any
00:22:51
power
00:22:52
so I do think it's the best way to build
00:22:54
a an elevating bed
00:22:57
just like that it's in place
00:23:00
I also have a light up button here with
00:23:04
the up and down that way
00:23:07
um I can see if I leave it on not that
00:23:08
it necessarily matters it will go to its
00:23:11
limit and then it'll be able to support
00:23:13
the 500 pounds it's designed to support
00:23:15
but it's just nice to see just like with
00:23:18
the pump what I leave on and what I turn
00:23:19
off
00:23:21
and then just like that I've got a bed a
00:23:23
bed that I can sleep in either direction
00:23:25
because as you know I cannot sleep with
00:23:28
my head lower than my feet that is just
00:23:30
miserable so
00:23:33
this way it was a must-have too and it's
00:23:36
not that complicated have a bed that can
00:23:37
be oriented in any direction it's easy
00:23:40
to hop onto it's a nice and comfortable
00:23:42
bed
00:23:43
and it's you know already made like this
00:23:46
all I have to do now is just
00:23:48
take my pillows
00:23:50
and tuck in
00:23:52
I'm proud of the way that turned out
00:23:53
because I mean it it wasn't very
00:23:57
complicated it's pretty straightforward
00:23:58
system they just all have to be wired in
00:24:00
together
00:24:01
um and with the limit switches they'll
00:24:03
go where they're supposed to anyways but
00:24:05
it's cool to see it in practice and
00:24:06
honestly it works
00:24:08
even better than I expected because it's
00:24:10
it's nice and quiet and
00:24:12
it just makes the van life experience
00:24:14
that much more enjoyable if it wasn't
00:24:17
already with the bed down like this you
00:24:19
can reveal the whole ceiling
00:24:21
which is these tongue and groove
00:24:23
Pine planks
00:24:25
um that are 12 feet long the exact
00:24:27
length that they needed to be
00:24:29
and although I have no light coming from
00:24:32
above
00:24:33
that's kind of part of the idea it still
00:24:35
plenty of light comes from here and
00:24:37
comes from here and then even light will
00:24:38
come through the uh
00:24:40
through the little fan up here however
00:24:43
the general idea is that if I want to be
00:24:45
up and at them and awake the bed's out
00:24:48
of the way and I can be in more of a
00:24:49
focused mode
00:24:50
um instead of just laying here and being
00:24:52
able to leave the bed down at all times
00:24:54
I know it would take quite a lazy person
00:24:55
to leave a bed that you press a button
00:24:58
to move it back up down all day but
00:25:00
don't underestimate me
00:25:02
of course when you're done using the bed
00:25:04
the exact opposite procedure
00:25:07
let's take the pillows put them where I
00:25:10
want to leave them foreign
00:25:12
since the middle has a little bit more
00:25:15
room than the outside I like to favor
00:25:16
the Middle with the blanket because I
00:25:18
don't want things to get caught it
00:25:19
shouldn't be important it would just
00:25:20
pull everything through anyways but then
00:25:22
I just press the up button
00:25:26
and I let the van do its thing
00:25:32
and just like that it goes exactly where
00:25:34
it needs to
00:25:35
flip those lights back on
00:25:39
and since the uh since the table's
00:25:41
already loose and all I have to do is
00:25:42
just pick it up
00:25:45
playing it from Below
00:25:49
just like that I usually give it four
00:25:51
big
00:25:52
twists
00:25:54
and then I've got a whole workable bench
00:25:56
area which is just
00:25:59
a perfect place to sit down chill work
00:26:01
do whatever you need
00:26:03
I'm sure many of you are interested in
00:26:05
some of the building parameters and the
00:26:07
materials that I used so before I jump
00:26:09
into all the technical stuff I will run
00:26:11
down
00:26:12
what I used for some of the building
00:26:14
Essentials
00:26:16
for insulation I have
00:26:19
foam panels in the ceiling foam
00:26:22
underneath the floor both about an inch
00:26:24
and a half plenty of thickness
00:26:25
everything's held in with spray foam
00:26:27
spray expanding foam
00:26:29
um that's for the ceiling in the floor
00:26:31
the walls are insulated both inside the
00:26:35
panels T panels t-bars things like that
00:26:37
and then just on the surface like behind
00:26:39
here and behind the insets with stone
00:26:41
wool the way I built the floor here is
00:26:45
that the first thing I did was just lay
00:26:48
all that insulation down uh those big
00:26:50
insulation foam boards that were cut to
00:26:52
the right size and shaped and then I
00:26:55
have uh plywood on top of that the
00:26:58
plywood is bolted down there's nothing
00:26:59
glued there's nothing in those little
00:27:00
ridges I don't think any of that's
00:27:02
necessary the plywood being bolted down
00:27:04
through the bottom care undercarriage of
00:27:06
the van is what holds the insulation in
00:27:08
place and then all of the plywood and
00:27:10
all of the things that are screwed into
00:27:11
the floor are able to bolt no problem
00:27:13
right into the right into that plywood
00:27:15
and it's it's some thick Plywood And
00:27:17
that works perfectly fine
00:27:19
there's no creaking or anything and then
00:27:21
this LifeProof floor from Lowe's are you
00:27:24
know the vinyl wood but it looks
00:27:25
excellent and it works fine it's
00:27:26
perfectly waterproof skin proof scratch
00:27:29
proof that's exactly what you want in a
00:27:31
van all of the Cabinetry
00:27:34
um overhead and base cabinets are are
00:27:37
all custom made
00:27:39
um just out of random pieces of Home
00:27:40
Depot plywood mostly Birch for the
00:27:43
better looking things like this and like
00:27:45
the walls and of course all of these
00:27:47
little panels and the cladding that I
00:27:49
added for aesthetic purposes I
00:27:50
definitely think that having some kind
00:27:52
of cladding is nice because it just you
00:27:54
know it adds a little bit of Dimension
00:27:55
and since you're decorating a tiny home
00:27:57
essentially every little thing uh as
00:28:00
long as it's done cohesively adds a lot
00:28:03
to the
00:28:05
overall
00:28:07
overall flavor of the van conversion
00:28:10
same goes for all of these
00:28:13
you know intricate complicated cutouts
00:28:16
which are necessary for a van which has
00:28:18
no flat surfaces no straight surfaces no
00:28:20
level surfaces nothing everything is
00:28:22
curved everything is custom everything
00:28:24
requires painstaking
00:28:27
cut recut uncut measure you can't even
00:28:29
measure this kind of stuff you got to
00:28:30
cut it out with cardboard first
00:28:32
to make these these very specific panels
00:28:34
but once it's all put together and
00:28:37
talked about 100 times it looks
00:28:39
excellent
00:28:41
this window is
00:28:44
um just a piece of Cedar underneath here
00:28:46
some vinyl wrap on the inside and then a
00:28:48
little piece of birch plywood that was
00:28:50
cut to the shape it's my only window in
00:28:52
the entire van it is impossible to break
00:28:54
in through there because it's too small
00:28:55
to do anything it opens with a little
00:28:57
mosquito screen
00:28:59
um that way I can vent out some of the
00:29:01
fumes if I'm cooking something create a
00:29:03
cross Breeze if I need it and just have
00:29:05
some light as part of the overall
00:29:07
backsplash that was definitely something
00:29:09
that I had planned out in my original
00:29:11
idea and it ended up being
00:29:14
it ended up being a great thing and I
00:29:16
think it's a great aesthetic choice I
00:29:17
think it looks really good and it locks
00:29:20
um but if somebody were to try to break
00:29:21
in through there and what are they gonna
00:29:23
do I mean there's no way they can reach
00:29:25
anything
00:29:26
um and of course dead bolting the
00:29:28
drawers in the back the doors on the
00:29:29
side and locking this from the front
00:29:30
means that it is somewhat impenetrable I
00:29:32
mean of course a motivated person could
00:29:34
angle grind through one of those
00:29:35
deadbolts or just straight up through
00:29:37
the wall but generally speaking My
00:29:39
Philosophy is that if it's difficult
00:29:41
enough to break in we'll probably move
00:29:43
on to the next van so make your van
00:29:45
harder to break into than the van next
00:29:46
to
00:29:47
for those of you that are interested in
00:29:49
the technical parameters of the van
00:29:52
builds how the off-grid system works and
00:29:54
where all of that is housed
00:29:56
that is what we're moving on to now
00:29:58
the electrical system access is behind
00:30:00
here I don't need to move the piano but
00:30:03
it'll make it easier to see
00:30:06
all of these are Velcro
00:30:08
so they can just be pulled down and
00:30:10
that's how you access the electronics
00:30:12
Port here
00:30:15
which on the inside is
00:30:18
my elaborate mess of a power system
00:30:21
the battery is 300 amp hours
00:30:25
and is able to support for a few days
00:30:27
pretty much all of my systems I have a
00:30:29
resting wattage draw of about 30.
00:30:32
um with a few systems on that'll go up
00:30:34
to 50 and then when the fridge runs it's
00:30:35
usually around 75 or 80. that still
00:30:38
manages to last a very long time
00:30:39
especially since I've got 350 watts of
00:30:43
solar coming in through this charge
00:30:44
controller and a 500 watt system pumping
00:30:47
out of the alternator every time the car
00:30:48
turns on
00:30:49
I'm putting those 40 amps directly into
00:30:51
the back here so underneath this plywood
00:30:54
panel is the battery it's huge it weighs
00:30:57
a ton
00:30:58
um then I've got one of my two fuse
00:31:00
panels back here routed directly through
00:31:02
these bus bars the other fuse panel is
00:31:05
behind the other bench for the
00:31:06
appliances on that side I've got my 350
00:31:09
watts of solar that come in through here
00:31:11
as you can see it's charging right now
00:31:12
but since it's cloudy I'm probably not
00:31:15
getting much
00:31:16
um this here runs essentially all of the
00:31:20
vast majority of the systems so I've got
00:31:22
both sets of lights on fuses there I've
00:31:25
got the fan on fuses
00:31:27
um I've got the inverter here which
00:31:29
supplies 2 000 watts to my Outlets which
00:31:32
we'll go over in a second
00:31:33
I also have the bedlift system
00:31:35
and a few other things in here like the
00:31:37
fridge
00:31:38
um
00:31:40
the uh everything is wired through a
00:31:42
fuse and the only terminals
00:31:45
and the only things coming off of the
00:31:46
battery terminals are these bus bars
00:31:48
which have the access for which goes
00:31:52
straight to the inverter the other fuse
00:31:53
panel this fuse panel charge controller
00:31:55
and the uh
00:31:58
charging from the alternator in the
00:32:00
front
00:32:01
this power system is is it's not
00:32:03
Overkill it's exactly the right amount
00:32:04
in my opinion and I've had very few
00:32:06
problems with it
00:32:08
this inverter also supplies power for a
00:32:12
few of my systems that require AC system
00:32:14
AC power as in of course all the outlets
00:32:16
but then the
00:32:19
Network boosting and the Wi-Fi are both
00:32:21
running off of that my water heater is
00:32:23
running off of that and the uh
00:32:26
and the stove for its automatic ignition
00:32:29
is running off of that
00:32:31
those systems will draw about 25 watts
00:32:34
combined resting along with just the
00:32:37
alternators along with the inverters
00:32:40
default draw however the second I press
00:32:43
the one of those buttons
00:32:45
to turn on the water heater you'll see
00:32:46
the 1.5 kilowatts drain right out of the
00:32:48
power system and that'll have a
00:32:50
substantial drop in voltage but
00:32:53
as long as I only use it for 10 20
00:32:54
minutes it's not a problem at all
00:32:57
the heater is controlled by the
00:32:58
thermostat right there the little
00:33:00
digital thermostat I can set whatever
00:33:01
temperature I want once it gets cold
00:33:03
enough the heater powers on draws gas
00:33:05
straight from the propane tank and heats
00:33:07
up the van and with the insulation I've
00:33:09
had no problems with that we will get to
00:33:11
finally test that out of course when I
00:33:13
go to stupidly cold places like I'm sure
00:33:15
you're all excited to see and I'm
00:33:16
excited to do as well
00:33:21
down here is the water system which has
00:33:26
15 gallons of cold water
00:33:30
um uh three and a half gallons of hot
00:33:31
water and then I'm not even sure I think
00:33:34
it's like five or seven gallons of gray
00:33:37
water which I'm able to just flip this
00:33:40
on or off this valve open or closed to
00:33:43
release the water straight out the
00:33:44
bottom of the van
00:33:45
this just pours straight into there and
00:33:48
as you can hear
00:33:50
once I turn that on it powers on the
00:33:52
pump
00:33:53
the pump supplies three gallons per
00:33:55
minute it cuts off automatically at 45
00:33:57
PSI similar to a normal household water
00:34:00
pressure so that works perfectly fine
00:34:02
that means that if I turn on any of
00:34:04
these the pump knows to turn on
00:34:05
automatically and then I can just use
00:34:08
the sink like I would anywhere else even
00:34:10
though I'm creating my own water
00:34:11
pressure I also have in here the water
00:34:13
filter
00:34:14
which is just by this water drop company
00:34:17
um and it provides some nice clean
00:34:20
drinking water out of there one of the
00:34:23
things you might be wondering is is
00:34:24
where's the bathroom right where's the
00:34:26
shower where's the bathroom I don't have
00:34:28
one
00:34:29
um of course deciding what was going to go
00:34:31
into the van was not completely my idea
00:34:33
but we both agreed that having no
00:34:36
bathroom was the way we wanted I've been
00:34:38
living in a car for a very long time and
00:34:41
I never had a bathroom in there so
00:34:43
finding bathrooms or just going in the
00:34:45
woods has been a basic component of My
00:34:48
Life
00:34:50
um for quite a while now and so it
00:34:52
didn't seem like an unnecessary thing to
00:34:54
take up space which would have been
00:34:55
either taking up
00:34:57
a major part of the kitchen or not being
00:34:59
able to have the elevator bed system
00:35:01
that I want
00:35:02
um which you know could have been a
00:35:04
possibility but all that for a bathroom
00:35:06
that is kind of gross to think about and
00:35:08
since I have gyms and public bathrooms
00:35:11
all around the world it's not really
00:35:12
much of a problem
00:35:13
um I'd much rather just have the space
00:35:15
the way I do now and it's been a few
00:35:18
months just like it's been years living
00:35:19
in the car and I never had a problem
00:35:21
with that I'm very happy with how it
00:35:23
turned out I think my vision was
00:35:25
executed exactly the way I wanted it to
00:35:28
be I think the style you know fits fits
00:35:31
uh my personality and the way I like
00:35:32
things to look
00:35:33
and I could see myself living in here
00:35:35
for you know as long as long as I as
00:35:37
long as I have to I haven't had any
00:35:39
kinds of issues it almost
00:35:41
it shocks me every single time that this
00:35:43
is mine and it's it's really the Most
00:35:45
Blessed feeling that I've ever had at
00:35:48
least so far in life I used to feel that
00:35:49
way about the car but now this is on a
00:35:52
whole other level
00:35:53
and something that
00:35:56
I wasn't sure I was gonna get back from
00:35:58
when I used to live in in the Ford Flex
00:36:00
was the feeling of some having some kind
00:36:03
of connection and really feeling feeling
00:36:05
like it's your home
00:36:06
and what I've learned is that honestly
00:36:08
that feeling first comes when you're
00:36:10
hiking in some remote scary place you're
00:36:13
you know you're worried about bears
00:36:14
you're worried about the cold all you
00:36:15
want
00:36:16
is to get home and when finally that
00:36:18
image is your van and after you're
00:36:21
bushwhacking or you're lost or whatever
00:36:23
and you finally see in the middle of the
00:36:24
night the reflection of your headlights
00:36:26
or tail lights and you you just get so
00:36:28
excited to see your van still there it's
00:36:30
still your home and after the first time
00:36:31
I had that feeling I was like oh no this
00:36:33
is this is my baby now this is my home
00:36:36
and I have you know no doubts whatsoever
00:36:38
of course I'm always Gonna Miss Chad
00:36:40
from before but
00:36:42
this is a new chapter this is a new home
00:36:44
this is a new part of my life and I
00:36:47
couldn't be more excited about it before
00:36:48
I go I'll step outside and show you guys
00:36:50
just what it looks like from the outside
00:36:53
um so you can get an idea of you know
00:36:55
how big it is and then you know how the
00:36:56
window looks and things like that but
00:36:58
aside from that I think we've covered
00:36:59
just about everything there is to cover
00:37:01
inside
00:37:03
if you have any questions about my van
00:37:06
conversion about your own van conversion
00:37:07
things that I did things that you think
00:37:09
are good ideas bad ideas or any
00:37:11
suggestions you have about things that I
00:37:13
might want to look forward to or look
00:37:14
into for the future don't hesitate to
00:37:16
leave a comment I'm changing the
00:37:18
conversion all the time and I'd love to
00:37:20
help other people
00:37:21
um with their own projects so yeah
00:37:23
please leave your feedback in the
00:37:25
comments it's it's welcome and it's
00:37:27
appreciated
00:37:29
here on the outside you can see
00:37:33
how that window inlay looks I wanted to
00:37:36
go with one of those
00:37:38
tinted
00:37:39
glass overlay Windows like that because
00:37:41
I think it looks nice and it's the only
00:37:43
window aside from the front ones
00:37:45
I also have the uh water inlet this is
00:37:50
how I can fill up the water tank at
00:37:51
campsites or at uh
00:37:54
RV dumps and it works just fine it's
00:37:56
nice and easy
00:37:58
you might be able to hear actually the
00:38:00
uh
00:38:01
the exhaust from the heater which
00:38:04
is much much quieter than like diesel
00:38:07
heater exhaust and things only a few
00:38:09
steps away [Music]
00:38:12
and you can't really hear anything
00:38:13
anymore
00:38:15
coming around the front
00:38:22
you get a good idea of these
00:38:25
tires I've got on here
00:38:30
which so far have been very capable much
00:38:32
better than anything I could do in the
00:38:34
uh in the SUV before
00:38:37
so I'm hoping that
00:38:39
along with all the weight of the van
00:38:42
I'll be able to take this guy
00:38:44
through all the winter weather coming
00:38:46
ahead so far off road it's been just
00:38:49
fine if anything more capable than what
00:38:52
I ever had in Chad
00:38:55
all right well thank you guys so much
00:38:57
for tuning in to
00:38:59
the new van conversion I don't have a
00:39:01
name for them yet definitely a hem but
00:39:04
that's you know similar along the lines
00:39:06
of I guess could be like Chad's Big
00:39:07
Brother even though he's younger
00:39:11
um but if you're eager to see all of my
00:39:13
Adventures you know these upcoming
00:39:15
months in this new van please don't
00:39:19
hesitate to subscribe to the channel I
00:39:20
will be posting as much as possible
00:39:22
about my life and my adventures in the
00:39:25
van it looks like tonight we might be
00:39:28
getting our first snow you know down at
00:39:31
normal altitudes that are drivable even
00:39:33
in this campsite here might be waking up
00:39:35
to a winter wonderland so stay tuned for
00:39:38
that Adventure coming up next and thank
00:39:40
you so much for watching this video see
00:39:43
