Here it is, your moment of glory. It’s been a  tight race. You’ve battled hard for the last
00:00:07
three minutes, but it’s finally here. Coconut  Mall. You’ve passed the cars and rounded the
00:00:13
bend. You’re in the final straight. Funky Kong is  in his full wheelie, but then it happens. The blue
00:00:21
shell strikes, and you drop from first to sixth.  Is there any justice in this Super Mario World
00:00:30
Welcome to Deep Thoughts While  Gaming. I’m Chris Chappell.
00:00:33
An evil tortoise, the princess he kidnapped,  and the makeshift hero of a plumber who saves
00:00:38
her. From Wario’s sweatshop to the nursery that  can only be accessed through a time machine,
00:00:44
housing the baby versions of  Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Daisy;
00:00:47
Nintendo’s best known characters have all been  assembled for one reason: to fall off of Rainbow
00:00:52
Road at least a dozen times each. Alright, two  reasons, because there’s a race, too. Friends,
00:00:58
enemies, and lovers will compete in a series  of races to finally decide once and for all who
00:01:06
the best driver is, as gorillas and babies  get behind the wheel. What could go wrong?
00:01:12
Mario Kart needs no introduction. Every gamer  should be familiar with Nintendo’s premier
00:01:17
racing series. As such, every gamer should be  familiar with the rage inducing blue shell.
00:01:25
Just before crossing the finish line on the  last lap, what should be your moment of glory,
00:01:31
you’re struck by a blue shell. Surely one of the  most gaming-related sources of childhood trauma,
00:01:38
this is an important step in the maturation of  a gamer. It builds character to anticipate the
00:01:44
sweet taste of victory, only to be struck down  inches from the finish line. Being filled with
00:01:51
resentment and hatred toward Toad as he taunts  you on his way to first. I’ll get him next time.
00:01:57
The blue shell strikes the first  place player with total accuracy,
00:02:02
giving an advantage to those  behind, but closest  to first. Interestingly, the powerup can only be
00:02:09
attained by players in 4th-8th. That means the  powerup occupying a valuable resource of the
00:02:15
eighth place player is benefitting six others  more than themselves, without those six having
00:02:22
to use their own resources for the advantage.  The player in eighth place strives for first,
00:02:28
and attacks the first place player, yet  is unlikely to benefit from that strike,
00:02:33
as they had not adequately climbed the ladder  first. Interestingly, as that ladder is climbed,
00:02:39
the opportunities to strike with the blue shell  disappear in favour of green and red shells. While
00:02:45
the powerups are still intended to get their  recipient ahead, they are now focused solely
00:02:49
on the player’s immediate surroundings,  rather than just targeting first place.
00:02:54
That’s right, blue shells are fuelled by envy.  They are propelled to the front of the pack by
00:03:00
the pains of inadequacy felt by the middle. The  power vacuum created does not benefit the middle
00:03:06
or lower ends of the race, but the others at the  front of the pack. The blue shell is a vindictive
00:03:13
attack by a racer from the middle of the pack,  who stands to gain little from their malice.
00:03:19
In my daily thoughts about the Roman Empire,  I considered how Caligula ALLEGEDLY murdered
00:03:25
then-emperor Tiberius just prior to the  Liberalia festivities, before presenting
00:03:31
himself as the new emperor. For Caligula, his  ambitions paid off, as he was quickly accepted
00:03:35
as emperor. It may also have helped how despised  Tiberius was among the Roman people. After all,
00:03:41
who likes a sore winner in first place?  … Especially one who revels in subjecting
00:03:45
innocent people to public torture and executions  … who also harbours a sexual attraction to minors
00:03:52
that is frequently acted on … maybe Caligula isn’t  so bad after all. I mean, he did use an exorbitant
00:03:57
amount of tax dollars on Tiberius’ extravagant  funeral. This Caligula guy might be alright!
00:04:03
What were we talking about  again? Right, the Bible.
00:04:06
“For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion  and every evil thing are there.” James 3:16. In
00:04:14
Christianity, envy is one of the Seven Deadly  Sins, but you’re probably not going to Hell for
00:04:20
gruesomely airstriking Wario. Probably. This  indicates that envy has more than just one
00:04:27
form. There is an excusable form of envy, like  the ambition and strife to attain first place
00:04:32
in Mario Kart by any means necessary, and then  there is the type of envy that will condemn your
00:04:38
soul to Hell—namely, anything you do in a game of  Mario Party. I lost so many friends to that game…
00:04:46
Stanford professor Justin D’Arms  divides envy into two different forms:
00:04:50
benign and invidious. A benign form of envy is  characterised by being “emulative or admiring.”
00:04:58
This form of envy is seen all the time in  competition, where every participant tries
00:05:03
to be the best. A sportsmanlike player respects  their opponents, and learns from the champion,
00:05:08
attempting to imitate and innovate what the  best do well, in order to become even better,
00:05:14
achieving new heights for the sport. The  greatest players of sports, or Mario Kart,
00:05:19
have clear admiration for one another. Though  there is envy inherent to wanting to be the best,
00:05:25
having the achievement and prestige that comes  with it, that envy is good-hearted and benign.
00:05:31
Invidious envy, on the other hand,  revolves entirely around “a desire
00:05:35
that the rival will lose the good” as  its main priority. In the prior example,
00:05:41
where the rival will coincidentally  lose first place when you take first,
00:05:45
the goal in relation to envy is benign.  Your actions are inspired through direct
00:05:50
ambition for yourself, carried through  with respect to your rival for pushing
00:05:55
you forward in your aspiration for greatness.  The goal is not just to put your rival behind.
00:06:01
Every item in Mario Kart can be explained through  the lens of benign envy. Red shells are annoying,
00:06:09
but at least they come from the player  directly behind you. It makes sense why
00:06:14
they would strike you, as it will lead directly  to them passing you. It’s not a desirable outcome,
00:06:20
but you can respect the hustle in  sportsmanship. Every item in the game
00:06:25
is meant to move you up the ladder one place  at a time, always having the most effect on
00:06:30
the player immediately ahead or behind  you. That is, every item except for one.
00:06:38
That damned blue shell.
00:06:41
What good could striking the first place player do  for somebody in sixth? What about eighth? Little,
00:06:48
if any. The blue shell they so vindictively  send out is unlikely to do them any good in
00:06:54
their ultimate goal of attaining first  place, so why launch it at all? Envy,
00:07:00
invidious envy. Their use of the blue shell is NOT  good sportsmanship, and it is LITERALLY SINFUL.
00:07:09
Perhaps no one understood the power of envy more  than our good friend Karl Marx. Are the problems
00:07:15
in your life the result of your own actions?  Do you require personal accountability? Of
00:07:20
course not! You are being kept down by the evil  oppressors, lording it over you in first place,
00:07:28
while you languish in eight. They don’t deserve  to be in first. You do! Sure, you’re terrible
00:07:34
at Mario Kart, but how is that a reason you  don’t deserve that first place gold trophy?!
00:07:40
The solution? Marx called for the forcible  overthrow of all preexisting social conditions.
00:07:46
Forcible means violent. If life is a rat race,  Communism is the blue shell that blows the whole
00:07:53
thing up. And just like the blue shell, using  it won't mean you find yourself in first place.
00:07:58
Oh no. Most people who support the revolution,  often end up against the firing wall. Or starving
00:08:05
to death. A lot of people starve to death  under communism. It’s surprisingly common.
00:08:09
But perhaps there the blue shell does  provide a good lesson. Just because you
00:08:14
find yourself in first now, realize that’s  transient. You could someday be dead last.
00:08:20
So don’t breed resentment and envy. Instead  of looking down on those who are behind you,
00:08:25
whether in life or a game of Mario Kart, a  little bit of humbleness can go a long way.
00:08:30
As Confusicus said, “The superior  man, when resting in safety,
00:08:35
does not forget that danger may come. When  in a state of security he does not forget
00:08:40
the possibility of ruin. When all is orderly,  he does not forget that disorder may come.
00:08:46
Thus his person is not endangered, and his  States and all their clans are preserved.”
00:08:52
Of course he also said, “It does  not matter how slowly you go so
00:08:55
long as you do not stop,” which  is terrible advice for Mario Kart.
00:08:59
Thank you for watching deep thoughts while gaming.  And remember, if someone comes to you and starts
00:09:04
talking about overthrowing the Mushroom Kingdom’s  monarchy, casting off the shackles of oppression,
00:09:10
and establishing the People’s Democratic Mushroom  Republic, throw a blue shell in their face.
00:09:15
And check out this video about how Mario  has become a sad shell of his former self

Description:

Take a journey down Rainbow Road, because on this Deep Thoughts While Gaming, we look at the dreaded blue shell of Mario Kart and how it reveals the same kind of envy that drove the philosophy of Karl Marx and Communism.
