00:00:00
today on the channel I'm going to show
00:00:01
you six Van Halen intros that are easy
00:00:03
to play
00:00:04
[Music]
00:00:14
[Applause]
00:00:17
[Music]
00:00:25
hey everybody welcome back to the
00:00:26
channel today we're going to focus on
00:00:28
six awesome Van Halen introductions that
00:00:31
are easy to play I want to focus on six
00:00:33
easy to play introductions so everybody
00:00:35
has an opportunity to get their hands
00:00:38
around the neck of a guitar and play
00:00:40
some cool Van Halen regardless of your
00:00:42
skill level so let's start it off
00:00:45
the first intro we're going to start off
00:00:46
with is DOA which is off of Van Halen II
00:00:49
one of my favorite Van Halen songs and
00:00:52
that lick sounds a little bit like this
00:00:54
[Music]
00:01:18
all right so let's break that down this
00:01:20
lick is in the key of A
00:01:23
I'm tuned somewhere between standard
00:01:27
tuning and E flat Eddie Van Halen love
00:01:30
the tune half a step down for the Van
00:01:32
Halen Roth era stuff actually he tuned
00:01:35
about a quarter of a step down so our
00:01:37
low E this is our low E
00:01:40
between E and E flat
00:01:42
any of that old Van Halen David Lee Roth
00:01:45
stuff is going to be in this tuning
00:01:47
other than like jump okay
00:01:49
so let's take the take a look at the
00:01:52
song in a well first of all it starts
00:01:55
off with a
00:01:58
he hits an a chord on the second fret
00:02:01
and uh he's got his whammy bar in his
00:02:04
hand like this and we're gonna go
00:02:08
we're gonna just dip the bar down just a
00:02:10
little bit so all the strings Go Out Of
00:02:12
Tune
00:02:14
I'm only playing the first three notes
00:02:16
of this a chord which is a e a okay so
00:02:21
we got
00:02:26
little vibrato on it okay and he's in
00:02:29
front of his amplifier it's so loud he
00:02:30
gets feedback so I can't get feedback in
00:02:34
front of my computer monitors here
00:02:36
foreign
00:02:41
slide right so what that he does is
00:02:44
angles the pick sideways or at an angle
00:02:47
and we're going to pick on the low E and
00:02:49
the low a strings
00:02:51
starting with a humbucker up here
00:02:54
and we're going to play this riff I'm
00:02:57
going to take my middle two fingers
00:03:00
and my pointer finger is going to be on
00:03:02
this F sharp so the pointer the middle
00:03:05
two fingers are on the E and the a the
00:03:09
middle two strings
00:03:15
now I'm going to hit this F sharp with
00:03:18
my pointer finger so I'm hitting an a
00:03:20
chord
00:03:22
and then an F sharp
00:03:25
and we're going to go down to the low E
00:03:27
so it goes
00:03:37
okay and there's a little bit of a chug
00:03:40
going in there
00:03:41
[Music]
00:03:47
so what he does in between those notes
00:03:50
[Music]
00:03:58
he's muting the strings and he's going
00:04:01
to hit down once like this
00:04:04
[Music]
00:04:12
okay and then the second part of the
00:04:15
lake he goes
00:04:18
[Music]
00:04:22
it ends the exact same way as it did in
00:04:25
the in the very very beginning so what
00:04:27
I'm going to do is hit an a
00:04:29
and then on the G string on the fourth
00:04:31
fret I'm going to go
00:04:33
so I'm muting the rest of these strings
00:04:35
with my pointer finger so I can rake
00:04:38
into it
00:04:39
[Music]
00:04:41
because I'm breaking down all these
00:04:42
strings as I'm muting it with my pointer
00:04:45
finger and my my ring finger is on the
00:04:47
fourth fret on the G string and I'm
00:04:49
going to bend up half a step
00:04:53
so
00:04:54
like that
00:04:56
and then we're going to go open a
00:05:00
foreign
00:05:03
[Music]
00:05:12
[Music]
00:05:17
whoops let me try again
00:05:20
[Music]
00:05:28
[Music]
00:05:40
and Mikey's just doing the A and the F
00:05:43
sharp to add support to Eddie's part
00:05:46
okay
00:05:47
awesome let's take a look at another Van
00:05:49
Halen lick we're going to stay with some
00:05:51
David Lee Roth stuff for the next couple
00:05:52
licks and I'll show you a couple Hagar
00:05:54
heiress licks Okay so let's talk about
00:05:57
feel your love tonight all right so
00:05:59
we're gonna take a look at this this
00:06:02
song is an e and it sounds like
00:06:08
oh
00:06:11
[Music]
00:06:13
here
00:06:18
[Music]
00:06:28
okay so let's take a look at that what
00:06:30
I'm doing here is I'm doing kind of a
00:06:32
boogie woogie thing a lot of a lot of
00:06:34
Blues players a lot of old Boogie Woogie
00:06:36
stuff you learn sounds like this
00:06:37
[Music]
00:06:54
something like that right so what
00:06:56
Eddie's doing is he's playing off the
00:06:58
major and the minor so on the E chord
00:07:01
he plays a g and he goes up to a G sharp
00:07:05
[Music]
00:07:09
and that's how that lick starts with
00:07:12
this G and the G sharp
00:07:14
but he's in E
00:07:15
[Applause]
00:07:17
and we're going to go right up to this
00:07:21
e major Triad
00:07:24
you're probably thinking how the heck is
00:07:25
that an E major well if this is an E
00:07:28
chord right here
00:07:29
and this note right here
00:07:32
there's your major third
00:07:35
which is which is the G sharp
00:07:39
foreign
00:07:45
like to play major thirds you like to
00:07:48
Break Up chords
00:07:51
so we're gonna basically go down this
00:07:53
riff in thirds
00:07:55
[Music]
00:08:03
so I'm going to show you that part first
00:08:04
then we're going to add in the chugs
00:08:09
those things
00:08:10
which is just chugging on the low E so
00:08:12
this riff comprises of these notes g to
00:08:16
g sharp and then
00:08:17
[Music]
00:08:18
going to be up on the A and the D string
00:08:21
seventh and sixth fret
00:08:22
that's all the strings that we're going
00:08:24
to play
00:08:26
and the nice thing about this chord is
00:08:29
you can play the low E with it too
00:08:31
because it's an E major chord and then
00:08:34
we're going to take that same chord
00:08:35
shape
00:08:37
and move it down two Frets and that's a
00:08:39
D major
00:08:41
and this next shape right here is an a
00:08:45
major with a third on the bass
00:08:48
and it's on the fourth fret on the a
00:08:50
string and the second fret on the D so
00:08:52
it's
00:08:54
and then we're gonna go
00:08:56
[Music]
00:08:58
what that is is the D major here
00:09:02
the a with the major third
00:09:05
and then it's it's a basically it's a
00:09:08
it's a b and an e
00:09:09
a fourth which is an E chord so it's
00:09:13
second fret on the A and the D string so
00:09:15
all together it's
00:09:18
[Music]
00:09:28
when you put the chugs
00:09:31
[Music]
00:09:33
gotta put those little chugs between
00:09:35
each change
00:09:38
two chugs
00:09:41
than the Riff
00:09:45
[Music]
00:09:48
and then he ends that lick when he goes
00:09:50
into the verse
00:09:52
to an a where Dave sings we're getting
00:09:56
funny in the back of my car
00:09:58
and then that's a basically a d over an
00:10:01
a
00:10:06
D inversion
00:10:09
[Music]
00:10:15
one important aspect of this song is the
00:10:17
vibrato also like so
00:10:21
[Music]
00:10:23
you want to overdo it
00:10:26
especially on that first one he's kind
00:10:29
of wiggling his middle finger
00:10:31
which makes this pointer finger move
00:10:34
makes that third sound a little juicier
00:10:38
[Music]
00:10:45
hear that
00:10:50
subtle things like that make make a cool
00:10:53
cool riff
00:10:56
cooler
00:11:00
okay so I gotta add this next riff in
00:11:03
here which most of you'll probably fast
00:11:06
forward but ain't talking about love
00:11:08
[Music]
00:11:18
so a minor to G right
00:11:21
and there's an F in the middle
00:11:24
f g
00:11:28
rest
00:11:30
[Music]
00:11:33
so what I'm doing there I'm palm muting
00:11:35
the whole thing so one thing you want to
00:11:36
get used to doing is holding this a
00:11:38
minor position and going
00:11:42
[Music]
00:11:49
those are the first four notes
00:11:52
which is the low a the E on the D string
00:11:57
and then C
00:12:01
a
00:12:03
so the first four are
00:12:06
then open e and we're gonna do this F
00:12:11
so
00:12:15
that that second part is
00:12:18
open E then
00:12:23
arpeggiate down that F major chord and
00:12:25
then we're gonna go
00:12:27
ring finger and Pinky on the G and the D
00:12:30
here
00:12:32
we're going to strum down
00:12:35
and then do this lick
00:12:37
[Music]
00:12:38
which is c b c a
00:12:42
I'm gonna put a little vibrato on there
00:12:45
too
00:12:46
just like we didn't feel your love
00:12:47
tonight
00:12:49
so that lick without the palm muting
00:12:51
sounds like
00:12:52
[Music]
00:12:54
[Applause]
00:12:58
like
00:12:59
foreign
00:13:04
and then the chorus
00:13:09
which is a minor twice
00:13:13
there's Reverb on the sound a little bit
00:13:15
of delay to give it the echo
00:13:19
you can put a little in between each one
00:13:26
riff
00:13:29
[Music]
00:13:33
and what I'm doing there is B string
00:13:38
which is three five eight ten
00:13:42
foreign
00:13:45
[Music]
00:13:46
you can play the open E with that as
00:13:48
well [Applause]
00:13:49
[Music]
00:13:56
now Palm muted it sounds like
00:14:00
[Music]
00:14:02
we take the Palm mute off on the
00:14:05
and what I'm doing is I'm resting my
00:14:07
palm I'm a humbucker
00:14:09
just enough where you can hear the note
00:14:11
ring through
00:14:15
it's great for all kinds of you know
00:14:17
metal and rock
00:14:18
[Laughter]
00:14:22
[Music]
00:14:24
especially Van Halen stuff so that riff
00:14:26
that I showed you we're just going to
00:14:28
Palm mute
00:14:31
[Music]
00:14:34
in slow motion
00:14:39
[Music]
00:14:46
up to speed
00:14:47
[Music]
00:14:57
on the record Eddie throws a flanger on
00:14:59
that
00:15:01
[Music]
00:15:06
one on here
00:15:09
[Music]
00:15:13
cool all right so there's ain't talking
00:15:16
about love hope that made sense
00:15:18
riff number four we're going to talk
00:15:20
about Best of Both Worlds
00:15:29
[Music]
00:15:36
[Music]
00:15:40
all right cool and I'm going to show you
00:15:42
the [Music]
00:15:51
I'll show you that too so the beginning
00:15:53
this is like playing Highway to Hell
00:15:54
mixed with uh celebrate by cooling the
00:15:57
gang so
00:15:59
what I'm doing there is I'm taking a d
00:16:01
chord and I'm putting the F sharp right
00:16:03
there okay this is kind of like the AC
00:16:05
DC cord man
00:16:07
and I'm going to slide that up to a g
00:16:10
like this I'm going to leave this middle
00:16:12
finger here and slide up to this G
00:16:15
[Music]
00:16:16
then do that again but one time
00:16:21
to an A and it does it pretty much the
00:16:26
same way just shorter
00:16:29
[Music]
00:16:34
then the song goes into
00:16:40
so what I'm doing there is a g a d and
00:16:45
an a
00:16:46
with an a pedal tone
00:16:49
so once again this beginning is this D
00:16:52
with the F sharp
00:16:54
to a g
00:16:58
a
00:17:03
now if you're wondering what he does on
00:17:05
that turn around you're on the verses he
00:17:07
goes [Applause]
00:17:12
[Music]
00:17:16
so what I did there was
00:17:19
I'm going from a b to a c to a d chord
00:17:24
so
00:17:32
[Music]
00:17:34
the way I'm doing that is
00:17:37
I don't know if this is why he does it
00:17:39
but it makes sense to me I've got my
00:17:41
finger on the my middle finger on the B
00:17:46
now I'm playing the D like this
00:17:49
[Music]
00:17:57
which is the end right there
00:18:02
foreign
00:18:04
[Music]
00:18:06
to get it nice and clean
00:18:10
he did he'd like to roll back on the
00:18:11
volume and make that Distortion come
00:18:14
down to a nice clean tone kind of gritty
00:18:17
still has a lot of Headroom in the amp
00:18:19
the amp still sounds big and warm
00:18:21
[Music]
00:18:30
so what I'm doing there is this G toward
00:18:33
shape which is five four three on the
00:18:36
dgb stream with a low a on the bass
00:18:40
that's the pedal tone
00:18:42
and I'm taking my pick put it in between
00:18:45
my fingers like this and I'm plucking
00:18:48
the notes with my
00:18:50
my three fingers pointer middle and ring
00:18:53
and my thumb is on the a string
00:18:57
like that
00:18:59
and then this chord down here is a d
00:19:02
with an F sharp on the bass
00:19:07
so you got to learn how to switch
00:19:08
between these and then go to an A
00:19:14
and then you're just going to do this
00:19:16
chord [Music]
00:19:18
which is like an a dominant seven
00:19:22
sus2 chord
00:19:24
something like that
00:19:28
[Music]
00:19:32
[Applause]
00:19:33
[Music]
00:19:36
cool so there's Best of Both Worlds hope
00:19:39
I'm going slow enough and this is making
00:19:40
sense so comment below let me know if I
00:19:43
need to
00:19:44
slow down a little bit or speed up in
00:19:46
these lessons black and blue is the next
00:19:48
one I want to show you black and blue is
00:19:50
an e
00:19:52
and what we're going to do is we're
00:19:53
going to take this this is basically a
00:19:57
broken up E chord we're going to do
00:19:58
these things
00:20:00
octaves so we're on I'm on the um low a
00:20:05
string second fret and the g string on
00:20:08
the fourth so this is these are the two
00:20:10
notes we're playing and the beauty of
00:20:13
this intro is we're going to take this
00:20:14
octave
00:20:15
we're going to go from two up to four to
00:20:19
five with our pointer finger and our
00:20:21
pinky is just going to follow along and
00:20:23
stay one fret away from everything right
00:20:25
it's going to follow his friend up the
00:20:29
fretboard and then we're gonna add this
00:20:31
High e
00:20:33
with it okay
00:20:35
we're gonna play the octave and then go
00:20:38
do this so it sounds like
00:20:39
[Music]
00:20:43
so slide up
00:20:45
got a lot of gain on it
00:20:49
[Music]
00:20:51
that's the high e and the B so we go
00:20:54
[Music]
00:20:56
down a step
00:20:59
let me start by playing you this lick I
00:21:01
forgot to play in the beginning
00:21:04
foreign
00:21:06
[Music] [Applause]
00:21:11
[Music]
00:21:12
[Applause]
00:21:15
[Music]
00:21:34
foreign
00:21:35
[Music]
00:21:43
cool so that's the main lick I'm going
00:21:45
to show you so back to what we started
00:21:47
with
00:21:49
and then High e and B
00:21:52
go down a fret
00:21:55
and then go
00:21:57
and what I did on this is I I made the
00:22:01
cord so this is an E chord so what I did
00:22:04
was play it like this I fleshed it out I
00:22:07
played the low E
00:22:09
like an E chord with my pinky right
00:22:12
there so we it sounds like this
00:22:16
[Music]
00:22:20
then go
00:22:23
which is low e to a g a little bit of a
00:22:26
Bend
00:22:27
back to the low E
00:22:30
[Music]
00:22:43
then he goes to an a
00:22:47
like this
00:22:49
then it kicks in
00:22:54
what I'm doing there is I'm chugging
00:22:57
on the low E so we go the same riff
00:23:04
I'm playing that E chord
00:23:05
[Music]
00:23:20
foreign
00:23:23
there is an E chord without the major
00:23:26
third in rock and roll you got to leave
00:23:29
the thirds out of your chords most of
00:23:31
the time because it gives the singer and
00:23:34
the instrumentalist to decide if they
00:23:35
want to do a minor pentatonic or a major
00:23:42
[Music]
00:23:51
in actuality so far
00:23:53
three of these intros I've showed you
00:23:55
already have showed you Eddie dabbling
00:23:58
with major and minor a lot especially
00:24:00
you know in DOA
00:24:02
foreign
00:24:06
feel your love
00:24:11
in black and blue
00:24:17
cool the last look I'm going to show you
00:24:19
today is going to be top of the world
00:24:21
off of for unlawful carnal knowledge and
00:24:23
this riff starts off like this
00:24:26
[Music]
00:24:28
[Applause]
00:24:29
[Music]
00:24:34
laughs
00:24:35
[Laughter]
00:24:46
okay so that riff we're gonna be playing
00:24:49
we're going to be playing uh the B
00:24:52
string on the fifth fret and we're going
00:24:55
to be playing an open E with it so it's
00:24:58
a Unison note right I'm gonna be going
00:25:01
[Music]
00:25:02
thank you
00:25:04
which we're going to take this fifth
00:25:06
fret down to the fourth and back to the
00:25:08
fifth [Music]
00:25:10
and then go down to the second
00:25:15
same thing
00:25:16
both strings open
00:25:21
and then go b a e
00:25:26
like that okay this e is very similar to
00:25:30
black and blue but we're gonna we're
00:25:33
gonna add this e up here okay
00:25:35
foreign
00:25:36
[Music]
00:25:37
[Applause]
00:25:38
[Music]
00:25:39
[Applause]
00:25:45
the last time they do that they go
00:25:46
[Applause]
00:25:49
[Music]
00:25:52
that's before they go into the verse a
00:25:57
rake up
00:25:59
[Music]
00:26:05
and you're probably wondering how you're
00:26:08
getting that chunky sound out of it once
00:26:09
again we're palm muting and I'm going to
00:26:11
be playing this like
00:26:13
got a little bit of my hand on the
00:26:15
strings over here on the humbucker
00:26:17
[Music]
00:26:25
now if you watch I'm going
00:26:28
you gotta slide into it you can slide in
00:26:30
you can slide in from the fourth the
00:26:33
third the second just depends on
00:26:35
whatever you're doing
00:26:36
[Music]
00:26:37
I think I kind of take it from the
00:26:39
around the Third
00:26:48
I kind of attacked those chords like
00:26:50
percussively
00:26:52
so in between each one
00:26:54
I rest my hands on the strings
00:26:58
[Music]
00:26:59
okay that helps you with feedback if
00:27:00
you're allowed on stage and it makes the
00:27:03
Echo and the effects everything sound
00:27:04
tight
00:27:08
[Music]
00:27:19
foreign time
00:27:25
[Music]
00:27:28

[Music]

00:27:55
[Music]
00:28:01
[Applause]
00:28:03

Description:

In this video I demonstrate how to play 6 Van Halen intro licks that are suitable for all skill levels and that are a lot of fun tor rock out on! The intros are DOA (Dead Or Alive), Aint Talking' 'Bout Love, Feel Your Love Tonight, Best Of Both Worlds and Top Of The World. I showcased these licks because I felt they were good for beginners all the way up to seasoned players that just want to jam on some Van Halen. I included 3 songs from the David Lee Roth era and 3 from the Sammy Hagar era. Regardless, Eddie Van Halen came up with some great guitar parts no matter who was singing! I hope you enjoy the video.
