firearms and artillery at the Royal
00:00:03
armories Museum in the UK which houses a
00:00:05
collection of thousands of iconic
00:00:06
weapons from throughout history and on
00:00:07
this week's episode Jonathan is taking a
00:00:09
look at the alternate timeline Weaponry
00:00:10
of the Wolfenstein franchise thing about
00:00:12
converting a firearm to a directed
00:00:15
energy weapon is well it's essentially
00:00:17
like converting a water pistol into a
00:00:18
machine gun you know you've got all some
00:00:20
of the same basic ergonomics but that's
00:00:22
it nothing else is going to be carried
00:00:24
over to the finished gun if there are
00:00:26
any other games guns and mechanics you
00:00:28
guys want to see Jonathan break down let
00:00:29
us know in the comment section below and
00:00:30
for something a little bit different
00:00:31
make sure to check out our new series
00:00:32
Mind Games a show that explores the
00:00:34
psychological impact of gaming from our
00:00:36
relationship with loot boxes to the
00:00:37
psychology behind horror games right
00:00:39
time to check out the guns of
00:00:41
Wolfenstein
00:00:45
all right seems like a good place to
00:00:47
start the Luger or something close to
00:00:49
the Luger anyway they were still in the
00:00:51
40s at this point and we have something
00:00:55
not massively accurate for the Luger
00:00:58
it's recognizably a Lugo in terms of its
00:01:00
silhouette not one thing on it is
00:01:03
correct trigger guard very very chunky
00:01:05
we do have the interesting Luger Half
00:01:10
Moon trigger I'm not sure everyone's
00:01:12
aware of the toggle is action is
00:01:15
basically there but all the shapes are
00:01:18
different the notably the ears as it
00:01:20
were the knurled lugs that you grasped
00:01:22
to actually operate the weapon they look
00:01:24
more like car wheels on this The Twist
00:01:26
on Twist Off suppressor is not a thing
00:01:28
what you can't do is just you know quick
00:01:31
detach that's not a system that existed
00:01:33
and then even stuff like this
00:01:35
distinctive shape of the frame is there
00:01:36
but there's an extra weird shaped insert
00:01:39
and various screw looking features that
00:01:41
are just not on the real gun even the
00:01:43
grip has two weird well one thing I
00:01:45
can't see the actual magazine cache that
00:01:47
seems to have slipped across and become
00:01:49
part of the grip it's like a Luger
00:01:51
created by someone who's sore Luger once
00:01:53
so that's not being too much but then
00:01:56
the whole game is highly stylized a
00:01:58
reboot of a two and a half D FPS from
00:02:01
1992. so I don't think we can be too
00:02:05
exacting I'm just here to point out
00:02:06
interesting details
00:02:21
so moving on within this game to the
00:02:25
futuristic pistol derived from the Luger
00:02:27
or inspired by the Luger which is not
00:02:29
something that happened in real life in
00:02:31
real life this became
00:02:32
well completely replaced by the P38 and
00:02:36
its derivatives which is a completely
00:02:37
different design much simplified cheaper
00:02:40
to make less complicated as well and
00:02:42
therefore more reliable in the long run
00:02:44
very although a similar kind of
00:02:45
silhouette a very different pistol what
00:02:47
they didn't do is take the iconic pistol
00:02:50
and develop it onwards now that that
00:02:52
decision had already been taken by well
00:02:54
strangely enough 1938 so alternate
00:02:56
timeline I know ultimate alternate
00:02:58
timeline I cannot see the Luger getting
00:03:00
so radically evolved into some sort of
00:03:03
weird machine pistol I think it is in
00:03:06
this it seems to fire burst or even if
00:03:08
it was just a normal pistol it's just
00:03:10
not something you do but in pop culture
00:03:13
logic you know your iconic Nazi pistol
00:03:15
keeping that and making it look more
00:03:17
sort of sci-fi in a parallel 1960s where
00:03:20
they've been investing heavily in all
00:03:22
sorts of Technology it makes a strange
00:03:24
kind of sense
00:03:29
foreign
00:03:35
next one along looks to it's not quite
00:03:39
the same design that the rear of the
00:03:41
frame has changed and some of the
00:03:43
detailing has changed but it's pretty
00:03:45
close I think it's one of those sequel
00:03:47
guns where I don't think we're supposed
00:03:49
to spot the differences although having
00:03:51
said that the little red highlights from
00:03:53
the previous version are now yellow so I
00:03:55
don't know if that's significant I
00:03:56
haven't played New Colossus I've only
00:03:57
played new order it still gives us that
00:04:00
Luger in space Vibe a little bit more
00:04:02
streamlined a bit shorter too by the
00:04:04
look of it maybe that's my imagination
00:04:05
and funnily enough when you put the
00:04:07
little skinny suppressor on it it's
00:04:08
still
00:04:09
brings you back to this iconic sort of
00:04:12
silhouette
00:04:26
so this very elaborate alternate reality
00:04:30
Thompson which is basically what we're
00:04:31
looking at sheet metal and unnecessarily
00:04:34
carved bits of wood and it's it's sort
00:04:36
of like a Thompson but not really it's I
00:04:38
think it speaks to the artistically LED
00:04:41
design process of the weapons in this
00:04:43
game that for a very short part of the
00:04:46
game we have a totally different
00:04:47
Thompson you know they could have got
00:04:49
one from an asset Library they could
00:04:51
have re-revamped one from the previous
00:04:53
game maybe or just made a straighter
00:04:57
1928 Thompson gun but they didn't do
00:04:59
that they just went nope we're going to
00:05:01
design a gun that you in this case you
00:05:03
won't even ever see in the rest of the
00:05:04
game from scratch that's radically
00:05:06
different to the real one and you know
00:05:08
what I can't really complain about that
00:05:10
I will notice it I will comment on it
00:05:12
but that's their choice
00:05:17
all right
00:05:20
I've um pulled out not necessarily the
00:05:24
emotional support just don't give out
00:05:25
just a stone giver but uh because that's
00:05:27
essentially what we're looking at here
00:05:28
but it's a weird parallel universe mp44
00:05:32
or sdg sdg44 this one's marked uh mp44
00:05:35
but needless to say perhaps this thing
00:05:38
doesn't really look a whole lot like the
00:05:40
thing on screen
00:05:42
um what I'm looking at looks more like I
00:05:44
don't know a comic book version of a
00:05:47
strong River and maybe that's okay
00:05:49
because Wolfenstein really is inspired
00:05:52
by Comics based on wartime adventure and
00:05:55
Comics very rarely bother to get guns
00:05:58
right or if they do they stretch
00:06:00
proportions they change features so this
00:06:02
feels like a increasingly these games
00:06:05
feel like a conscious effort to do their
00:06:07
take on that design so the big standout
00:06:10
here are the the huge housings that are
00:06:13
either side and forward of the bus stop
00:06:15
but behind the magazine well you can see
00:06:18
them in the first person view you can
00:06:19
see them very clearly looking down at
00:06:21
this gun on the ground they're not
00:06:22
inspired by anything on the real gun at
00:06:25
all or anything else I can think of
00:06:27
they're there purely for design purposes
00:06:29
the grip frame is somewhat similar and
00:06:32
has the the wooden grip panels we've got
00:06:33
a wooden butt stock we have a metal
00:06:34
handguard so we have that overall feel
00:06:37
of a Stone River they've moved the rear
00:06:40
sight from its fairly distinctive
00:06:43
position here similar to where it would
00:06:45
end up on the on the Kalashnikov as well
00:06:46
to back here on top of the receiver and
00:06:48
the difference is go go on
00:06:53
foreign
00:07:00
rate of fire is pretty spot on this
00:07:03
thing chugs big time I've been fortunate
00:07:06
enough to fire one it's a very similar
00:07:07
rate of fire even the sound is actually
00:07:09
pretty pretty close to my recollection I
00:07:12
have unfairly paused this bang on a Case
00:07:15
ejection uh pleased to say that the
00:07:18
primer is struck for those of us that
00:07:21
care however the whole cartridge case
00:07:23
has a decidedly hexagonal look to it
00:07:25
this is a relatively low poly cartridge
00:07:27
case that's coming out of the gun hardly
00:07:29
a problem it flies out you're not going
00:07:30
to see it unless you pause and stare at
00:07:32
the screen then why would you do that
00:07:33
only if a video game review company was
00:07:36
was asking you to do it on camera
00:07:43
foreign
00:07:47
view a lot of the conventional firearms
00:07:50
in these games are very busy they look
00:07:53
cool but there are features there that
00:07:54
don't appear to have any practical
00:07:55
function and would be a real pain and a
00:07:58
lot of cost to machine and and really
00:08:00
just aren't doing anything with sci-fi
00:08:02
stuff you can kind of hand wave away
00:08:04
that sort of design but um here we have
00:08:06
to just accept that the parallel
00:08:08
universe Nazis have over designed but
00:08:10
they've really gone to town with this
00:08:12
and it would make it very heavy compared
00:08:14
to what it needs to be because what it
00:08:15
needs to be is this which is very very
00:08:17
spelled actually very very slim
00:08:22
foreign
00:08:28
towards I think
00:08:31
Maybe
00:08:33
we are we have a nod to the Heckler and
00:08:36
[ __ ] family of roller delayed rifles
00:08:39
submachine guns it's a bit of a reach
00:08:41
but the general more futuristic lines of
00:08:45
this version of the what I guess we're
00:08:47
going to call it the stronger there and
00:08:48
especially especially the straight
00:08:50
magazine straight box magazine do make
00:08:53
me think that they're it's at least a
00:08:55
nod to the G3 which is why I'm waving
00:08:57
about a G3
00:08:59
foreign
00:09:10
just in case you're scratching your head
00:09:12
going what's he talking about this looks
00:09:14
nothing like a G3 when we go into our
00:09:17
first person view we have very H and K
00:09:20
diopter style sites although the drum
00:09:23
which I assume does turn on this in
00:09:25
theory is on its Close Quarter battle
00:09:27
u-shaped Notch it's not on its true
00:09:30
diopter aperture setting for longer
00:09:32
distance but it's counted forward the
00:09:35
housing is very similar the front hooded
00:09:37
site post is is pure HK and if you
00:09:39
squint the silhouette is is not too far
00:09:41
off a G3
00:09:43
foreign
00:09:51
this is an unusual Beast the magazine on
00:09:54
the side kind of says fg42 as does the
00:09:57
overall sort of profile I suppose but it
00:09:59
is bolt action we've got a fluted bolt
00:10:02
there which is not something that well
00:10:03
it's quite a recent development in
00:10:04
Precision rifles as far as I know case
00:10:06
ejection is also a bit strange so the
00:10:09
cases just kind of float out parallel
00:10:11
whereas the way cases are extracted and
00:10:13
ejected inevitably imparts a spin to
00:10:16
them there's no other real way to do it
00:10:18
you have to have a claw of some sort
00:10:20
that pulls the cartridge out and then
00:10:22
something that it hits or perhaps an
00:10:24
ejector plunger on the face of the bolt
00:10:26
that gives Force to the other side of
00:10:29
the case head and it twists the case out
00:10:32
of the gun in this case it's very
00:10:33
obvious because they come out very
00:10:35
slowly and obviously with a manually
00:10:37
operated gun like this bolt action they
00:10:38
will tend to come out more slowly but
00:10:40
they won't just go they'll just float
00:10:42
out gracefully
00:10:45
foreign
00:10:56
standpoint I'm no engineer I'm not sure
00:10:59
how you'd get that big heavy scope to
00:11:01
automatically flip up and down like that
00:11:03
the hybrid Scopes that you'll have seen
00:11:05
with pivoting mounts they rely on you to
00:11:08
physically overcome spring pressure or
00:11:10
detent or press a catch sometimes as
00:11:12
well and rock them out of the way some
00:11:14
are spring-loaded so if you press a
00:11:15
catch they flick out the way for quick
00:11:17
switching to your reflex side what they
00:11:19
don't do is quickly flick the other way
00:11:22
because you'd need a system of linkages
00:11:23
and springs and maybe even a motor to
00:11:25
get that to work so that's just kind of
00:11:27
magic it's also not great for
00:11:29
maintaining zero magnifiers rocking in
00:11:32
and out of the way is one thing because
00:11:33
they they just have to be between your
00:11:35
eye and the magnifying scope but an
00:11:37
actual magnifying optic pivoting in and
00:11:40
out of your line of sight really not a
00:11:42
good idea because every time that shifts
00:11:44
there's a potential for your point of
00:11:46
impact shifting so your bullet doesn't
00:11:48
go away your site says it will not a
00:11:50
good day if that happens
00:11:53
culture
00:12:01
right traditional ish side by side 12
00:12:05
gauge double barrel sorry shotgun I
00:12:07
don't know what that weird bolt lever on
00:12:09
the side is for we have a top brake
00:12:12
lever conventional side acting top lever
00:12:15
at the back there some pretty sci-fi
00:12:17
lines to this thing despite being I
00:12:20
believe 1940s set and then when we break
00:12:23
it open doesn't seem to require any
00:12:25
catches pressing they seem to be taking
00:12:27
break open very literally so we
00:12:30
literally break the gun open over our
00:12:31
knee practically shove into two rounds
00:12:34
doomslayer style and flick the gun shut
00:12:37
in a very cool fashion there's a
00:12:39
whacking great military style sling
00:12:41
swivel on the left hand side of this
00:12:42
which doesn't really jibe very well with
00:12:44
either what this is or those sort of
00:12:46
deeply engraved or in relief uh leaves
00:12:50
on the breaches which are very
00:12:52
decorative which again is at odds with
00:12:53
the very harsh lines of this gun it
00:12:55
doesn't look like an aesthetically
00:12:57
pleasing Sporting gun and actually the
00:13:00
the barrels look to have been made in as
00:13:01
a unit instead of being two separate
00:13:03
round barrels attached together with a
00:13:06
rib across the top this looks to be a
00:13:08
solid oval bit of Steel that's been
00:13:10
bored out
00:13:19
all right this is one I've not seen
00:13:21
before on account of it being in a game
00:13:22
I haven't played yet right away that
00:13:24
design of folding wire butt stock
00:13:26
attached at the bottom of the pistol
00:13:27
grip and the top of the receiver and the
00:13:30
general sort of shape of it and the
00:13:32
German nature of the game says Walther
00:13:35
MPL to me but in as with all the other
00:13:38
guns in the game in detail it's really
00:13:39
very different from from that intriguing
00:13:42
design it's actually mark mp61 on the
00:13:44
side which I guess gives us an idea that
00:13:46
this was an early 60s parallel universe
00:13:49
design I guess to complement the assault
00:13:52
rifle I don't know what the big thing on
00:13:55
the side is it looks like a sort of Vape
00:13:58
machine or something I don't know what
00:14:00
that would do this is a conventional
00:14:01
cartridge firing gun I don't know why it
00:14:04
would need a smoke stack or whatever the
00:14:06
heck that is on the side of the gun it
00:14:08
makes it way thicker than it needs to be
00:14:10
way heavier quite unbalanced and if it
00:14:12
was real as well
00:14:18
foreign
00:14:21
I do like the the moment taken to fold
00:14:23
the stock shut to put the gun away or or
00:14:26
is it to transition to the dual wield
00:14:28
I'm not sure if it's both one or both
00:14:30
either way yeah it's cool that you get
00:14:32
you see that done rather than just
00:14:33
cutting straight to the um in this case
00:14:35
straight to the dual wheel the Stock's
00:14:37
folded which you could easily have done
00:14:38
a little bit of attention to detail
00:14:47
[Music]
00:14:52
okay what the Jesus is going on here uh
00:14:56
I should remember this but I don't we've
00:14:58
got two Luger toggle actions that don't
00:15:00
seem to move unless I'm blacking out
00:15:03
periodically at this point we've then
00:15:06
got a magazine on the side with what
00:15:07
looks like rounds but the rounds don't
00:15:10
move and we have an opening top cover
00:15:13
like a light machine gun but this is
00:15:15
clearly meant to be an automatic shotgun
00:15:22
moving to The New Colossus we've got a
00:15:26
very different take on an auto shotgun
00:15:28
albeit with a very similar feed set up
00:15:30
we've got a lot more detail on on the
00:15:32
case heads that I can see on the right
00:15:34
hand side here so we might get some some
00:15:36
more interesting stuff going on there
00:15:37
I've already seen three spinning barrels
00:15:40
there quite an intriguing looking design
00:15:42
very different lines on it it still has
00:15:44
the Luger cues but really they're really
00:15:48
minimized uh right to the point of just
00:15:50
being design cues of the two cocking
00:15:52
ears let's have a look
00:16:02
and as if to answer my my confusion over
00:16:06
the previous version of the gun with the
00:16:07
non-moving double Luger toggle locks
00:16:10
this gun does in fact have a toggle
00:16:12
mechanism even though it's somewhat
00:16:13
disguised and it actually works it
00:16:15
actually flips up like a like the uh
00:16:17
proverbial knee joints as we often
00:16:19
describe this so it's a
00:16:22
Luger shotgun
00:16:24
with Gatling barrels
00:16:26
[Music]
00:16:33
wow that that is impressive I have to
00:16:35
admit the dual wield on the auto
00:16:36
shotguns seeing the feeds that the
00:16:38
cartridges feed up and around albeit not
00:16:41
clear how they're making it into the gun
00:16:42
because there's no spring following them
00:16:44
they don't appear to be belted and then
00:16:46
so the gun isn't dragging them through
00:16:48
but it looks cool as does the cocking
00:16:50
mechanism and the spinning barrels and
00:16:52
the whole thing really this is quite an
00:16:54
upgrade I think over the previous
00:16:55
version
00:17:06
now this one's fun this is this is a
00:17:08
mounted gun I don't know if there's a
00:17:09
handheld version of it if there is I'm
00:17:11
about to find out definite mg42
00:17:13
inspiration the general shape the top
00:17:15
cover the sort of side saddle belt box
00:17:18
or this this my function as a magazine
00:17:20
not clear but then the rotating barrels
00:17:22
on the front which um Parks back to
00:17:24
Wolfenstein 3D and the chain gun I think
00:17:27
it was already called at that time which
00:17:29
is incorrect
00:17:35
yep sure enough we can Dismount this
00:17:37
thing and use it as essentially a modern
00:17:39
form of the original chain gun from
00:17:41
Wolfenstein 3D which is what I would
00:17:42
hope was hoping was the case got 7.62
00:17:45
millimeters written on the ammunition
00:17:48
device feed device now I have adopted a
00:17:50
strange voice because there's no real
00:17:53
reason why this would be in 7.62 7.62 by
00:17:57
51 that is clearly a reference to 762
00:17:59
NATO and there is zero reason why NATO
00:18:02
would exist in this timeline they would
00:18:04
almost certainly have carried on using
00:18:05
7.92 by 57 Mauser no real reason not to
00:18:09
at least not for me not for machine guns
00:18:17
looking at that spinning Barrel cluster
00:18:19
they're not normal not normal barrels
00:18:21
because you don't touch that part of a
00:18:23
gun and especially if you're going to
00:18:24
try and carry it around you wouldn't
00:18:25
want the extra weight of barrel shrouds
00:18:27
which are there to either to support the
00:18:29
barrel as in the md-42s case and to
00:18:32
protect the other user from the heat
00:18:34
also in the mg42's case they do they do
00:18:36
both jobs here they are there to hark
00:18:39
back to the mg42 so we've got this
00:18:41
Gatling version of the mg42 essentially
00:18:43
they don't really do anything because
00:18:45
you'd be mad to pick it up by the
00:18:46
rotating barrels anyway they just add
00:18:48
weight complexity and cost but how else
00:18:51
are you going to do a Gatling mg42 if
00:18:54
you don't put mg42 Barrel shrouds around
00:18:57
the barrels so various guns in these
00:18:58
games that have lumps and bumps on them
00:19:00
that don't make much sense in this case
00:19:02
I think the big cylindrical thing in
00:19:04
front of the magazine slash belt drum is
00:19:06
probably meant to be a motor yeah so I
00:19:08
think it would make sense you know the
00:19:10
the if you look at the minigun that has
00:19:11
a very Hefty motor on the side of it
00:19:13
that runs parallel to the barrels I
00:19:15
think this is meant to evoke that look
00:19:18
even if they're not thinking about what
00:19:19
Motive Power is actually spinning those
00:19:21
barrels you need electricity to run
00:19:23
these things
00:19:33
okay another one I've forgotten about so
00:19:35
we've got a very chunky very busy
00:19:38
designation Marksman rifle with bipod
00:19:40
legs on top of the gun we've got a
00:19:43
Picatinny type rail there which is a bit
00:19:45
of a head scratcher this supposed time
00:19:48
frame especially given that that was
00:19:49
invented in America weird glowy lights
00:19:51
on the underside of the flip over sight
00:19:54
which doesn't even seem to fit that
00:19:56
picatinny rail all very strange it's a
00:19:59
pretty far removed from a firearm of any
00:20:01
kind really it looks a little bit more
00:20:03
sci-fi than anything else I've looked at
00:20:05
I think
00:20:07
come on
00:20:15
okay either I've gone insane or this
00:20:18
thing has suddenly become a plasma rifle
00:20:21
yeah I don't know how that works but uh
00:20:23
we now are firing blue bolts of energy
00:20:25
and charging the gun up rather than
00:20:27
changing the magazine kind of I
00:20:29
personally prefer if if that was done as
00:20:31
a separate weapon or some kind of
00:20:33
visible visible conversion maybe I've
00:20:35
missed something but the thing about
00:20:36
converting a firearm to a directed
00:20:39
energy weapon is well it's essentially
00:20:40
like converting a water pistol into a
00:20:42
machine gun you know you've got all some
00:20:44
of the same basic ergonomics but that's
00:20:46
it nothing else is going to be carried
00:20:48
over to the finished gun
00:20:52
please do if you can come and visit us
