[piano-laden jazz tunes] [computer buzzes, beeps]
00:00:05
- Greetings and welcome to LGR Oddware,
00:00:07
where we're taking a look at hardware
00:00:09
and software that is odd, forgotten, and obsolete!
00:00:13
Like the KeyStik & Garage that we have right here.
00:00:17
And yeah, it is a little joystick...
00:00:19
[little joystick noises]
00:00:21
that clips onto your keyboard, like this.
00:00:25
And there you go.
00:00:26
[KeyStik rattles]
00:00:27
Now you have a joystick for your keyboard.
00:00:30
No more having to press the keys like a caveman.
00:00:34
Let's take a look at this bit of weirdness.
00:00:36
All right, so let us dive into this thing, finally.
00:00:40
Something I've been wanting to do for years
00:00:42
ever since I first learned about them.
00:00:43
This is the KeyStik & Garage, apparently. "Clip on 'n' play!"
00:00:50
Yeah, it clips onto your cursor keys,
00:00:52
and is fully compatible with any standard keyboard,
00:00:54
no batteries or gameport required.
00:00:56
Ooh, how impressive.
00:00:59
And this delightful thing comes to us from Plawa
00:01:02
or I guess "Plava,"
00:01:04
short for Plawa-Feinwerktechnik,
00:01:06
which is a German company.
00:01:08
I guess that equates to roughly Plava Precision Engineering.
00:01:13
They made a lot of things,
00:01:14
but this being one of them
00:01:16
and certainly, the most interesting thing of theirs
00:01:19
I've come across,
00:01:20
at least for Oddware potential so far.
00:01:22
Yeah, "clip on and play KeyStik & Garage."
00:01:24
So you've got like this monitor holster kind of deal,
00:01:29
which is just wonderful.
00:01:31
And then, of course, the KeyStik itself,
00:01:32
which, yeah, it's literally a joystick that clips onto your keyboard.
00:01:35
Goes over the arrow keys
00:01:37
and lets you use the arrow keys as a joystick of sorts
00:01:41
with an ergonomic design,
00:01:43
sweat reduction surface,
00:01:44
automatic centering, and no trimming.
00:01:46
How fancy.
00:01:47
Look at all these other selling points there.
00:01:49
Software control becomes child's play.
00:01:52
Great for games, CAD, spread-sheets.
00:01:55
It's much faster than the cursor keys.
00:01:59
Support diagonal movements of the cursor.
00:02:01
No installation software necessary.
00:02:02
Yeah, cuz it's a piece of plastic!
00:02:04
And yeah, this one in particular
00:02:05
actually comes to us from Portugal.
00:02:07
You can see the import sticker there.
00:02:09
Thanks to LGR viewer David
00:02:12
of the YouTube channel Deckard Games
00:02:14
for sending this over from there.
00:02:16
And yeah, he actually sent me a little note as well saying
00:02:18
some of his memories about it. And according to him,
00:02:20
this was purchased in the mid to late 90s
00:02:22
around when the Pentium II was new.
00:02:25
And they were sold in Portugal and were somewhat popular,
00:02:28
especially for fighting and football games.
00:02:31
He says he clearly remembers a transparent model
00:02:33
being the popular one,
00:02:35
and there were numerous models that they could find
00:02:37
in almost every computer shop back then.
00:02:40
And yeah, that kind of matches up pretty well
00:02:43
with what I've seen.
00:02:45
What little I've seen, I haven't actually come across
00:02:48
a whole bunch of information about these
00:02:49
except that they were a thing
00:02:51
and somewhat popular back in the day
00:02:54
because they weren't terribly expensive.
00:02:57
In fact, this one right here, or one very close to it
00:03:01
was also sold for around $13 in 1999, year 2000 or so
00:03:07
with KeyStik spelled with a 'C' in the word 'Stick' in the name.
00:03:11
So yay, upgrade.
00:03:13
There were also versions like the LogiStik.
00:03:16
Pretty much the same thing,
00:03:17
just slightly different packaging,
00:03:19
as well as the Fun Key Stick. The "Funky Stick."
00:03:22
Yeah, I see what they were going for there,
00:03:23
but anyway, all the same basic design
00:03:26
just distributed slightly differently at different retailers
00:03:30
in different countries and such around the world,
00:03:34
but yeah, I've just been looking for one of these things
00:03:37
for years. Ever since seeing this picture,
00:03:41
I don't even know how long ago,
00:03:42
maybe even before starting LGR,
00:03:44
just the Cursor Stick I believe is what it was called.
00:03:47
I have no idea who made it.
00:03:49
It might be the transparent one that David was referring to,
00:03:51
but yeah, there's only a couple of pictures
00:03:53
that I've found floating around.
00:03:55
Never actually found one though.
00:03:57
I've also seen the Mini Stick
00:03:59
about 10, 12, 15 years ago, whatever.
00:04:02
It was another one of these little clip-on joystick things.
00:04:06
It goes over the arrow keys, different design though.
00:04:08
And there's also the Japonika Numpad
00:04:12
and NES Joystick, adhesive joysticks.
00:04:16
So yeah, this one right here
00:04:18
clips onto your computer's numpad
00:04:20
instead of the arrow keys.
00:04:22
But it doesn't actually clip on it,
00:04:23
just it has an adhesive
00:04:24
and it just sort of sticks onto the keys.
00:04:26
Same with the NES version.
00:04:28
It just stick that straight onto the D-pad.
00:04:31
I've actually done a video about these
00:04:34
over on my LGR Blerbs channels.
00:04:37
So check that out
00:04:38
if you would like to see this bit of silliness in action.
00:04:42
It's kinda terrible.
00:04:43
It kinda works though, but not really.
00:04:46
I always thought that these would be more substantial,
00:04:50
maybe working a little better.
00:04:52
You'd hope so.
00:04:53
'Cause it's not actually like sticking straight to the keys,
00:04:56
it just sort of lays on top of it.
00:04:57
And there's also 3D printed things today,
00:05:01
like the JoyKey design
00:05:03
that you can find and 3D print yourself,
00:05:05
which seems to be more similar to the Japonika thing,
00:05:09
it just is a stick that sticks to your keyboard keys.
00:05:13
But yeah, this right here?
00:05:14
Eh you know, slightly more substantial.
00:05:17
So I really do look forward to seeing if this works.
00:05:22
So right here we have the Garage portion.
00:05:27
It's just like a monitor holster.
00:05:30
Yeah, used to see these for computer microphones
00:05:33
and even mice and such.
00:05:36
I guess, oh yeah, there would've been some adhesive
00:05:38
and little stickers.
00:05:40
Oh yeah.
00:05:41
A note [laughs] real quick from David.
00:05:44
"Here's the thing."
00:05:45
Yes. The thing is here.
00:05:51
And there we go.
00:05:53
So it's just a little box
00:05:56
[joystick squeaking]
00:05:57
with a little skreaky joystick on top there.
00:06:02
It feels more 'skreaky' than squeaky, I don't know.
00:06:04
It's like plastic on plastic.
00:06:05
Doesn't feel particularly great,
00:06:06
but hey, whatever.
00:06:08
Got "Plawa, Germany, patent pending." [chuckles]
00:06:12
So it does have some little sticker deals there.
00:06:15
So I guess it does adhere to the keyboard,
00:06:17
but not actually to the keys.
00:06:19
You know, this right here,
00:06:20
this actually adhered to the keys themselves,
00:06:23
which created a problem on like a Model M for instance
00:06:26
with detachable key caps on top of the keycaps.
00:06:29
But yeah, it's just, look at that.
00:06:33
Pokes down...
00:06:34
depending on which way you're moving the joystick.
00:06:38
I don't know, like it seems like it should work pretty well.
00:06:41
[laughs]
00:06:42
I have to add some sort of lubrication maybe.
00:06:44
That plastic sound is silly.
00:06:49
Actually, huh, look at that.
00:06:51
So it actually says Cursor Stick, KeyStik,
00:06:54
and LogiStik all in there.
00:06:55
So I guess a lot of those were similar enough
00:06:58
to just include the same constructions.
00:07:02
-"Constructions. -Constructions?!
00:07:04
[laughs]
00:07:05
Constructions, who says that?
00:07:07
Instructions, ya doof!
00:07:09
And we have English here, USA, Great Britain, and Australia.
00:07:13
Look at all these countries though.
00:07:14
All these different languages.
00:07:16
[international laugh]
00:07:17
Wow.
00:07:19
Okay.
00:07:21
Anyway, instructions, simple enough.
00:07:25
Put the things in there and sticky parts there,
00:07:27
and smack it down there and there you go.
00:07:30
What is this?
00:07:31
We have an adjuster.
00:07:35
I'm not entirely sure what that's saying to do there.
00:07:40
So let's read.
00:07:41
We would like to thank you
00:07:42
for deciding to purchase our innovative Cursor Stick,
00:07:45
LogiStik, KeyStik and wish you hours -- "your" hours,
00:07:49
of fun and enjoyments.
00:07:51
Mm, this is wonderful already.
00:07:52
To assemble it.
00:07:54
Let's see. Adhesive discs, remove the foil,
00:07:57
place the two discs between each magnet and metal plate.
00:08:02
So there's magnets in here?
00:08:03
[instrumental jazz music]
00:08:10
Now you have to adjust the white or yellow nuts
00:08:12
with the red tool by rotating the nuts up or down.
00:08:16
To ensure precise operation of the stick,
00:08:18
the nuts must rest on the keys.
00:08:20
Yeah, you make sure your nuts are always on your keys.
00:08:23
Cool.
00:08:25
Maybe this comes apart.
00:08:27
I don't wanna break it though.
00:08:28
This plastic feels terrible.
00:08:31
Okay, there we go.
00:08:32
Okay.
00:08:34
Wow.
00:08:35
So this actually does look very much
00:08:40
like the transparent version if you look at it like this.
00:08:43
[joystick squeaks]
00:08:45
[laughs]
00:08:48
It is definitely magnetic though. [screwdriver tapping]
00:08:51
[lubed joystick moves around] All right, so it's back together,
00:08:54
with a little bit of lubrication.
00:08:56
Less squeaky.
00:08:57
That's nice.
00:08:58
And yeah, figured out what it meant by doing adjustments.
00:09:01
Yeah, each of the little feet, the hexagons,
00:09:05
they actually spin a little bit.
00:09:09
So clockwise to tighten, make them go in.
00:09:13
And then counterclockwise to make them come out a bit.
00:09:16
So there's little adjustment feet.
00:09:17
So you adjust each one of these individually.
00:09:20
There's not one adjustment.
00:09:22
So I guess there would've originally been
00:09:24
a little hex head thing to make that happen.
00:09:29
And yeah, you just get those matched up
00:09:30
so that it's just barely resting on the arrow keys.
00:09:34
And yeah, that makes sense.
00:09:35
I was wondering about that,
00:09:36
cuz there are different heights
00:09:39
for keycaps and keys in general.
00:09:41
So yeah, let's go ahead and get this adjusted
00:09:45
and stuck onto a keyboard and we'll test it out.
00:09:47
[jazz music fades]
00:09:54
All righty, time to get this installation going,
00:09:57
which just involves... that.
00:10:00
And a bit of an adhesive.
00:10:02
I'm just gonna use some of this double-sided,
00:10:04
sticky mounting stuff since it works quite well.
00:10:08
But yeah, you can see here hopefully,
00:10:11
I did some adjustments to the nuts,
00:10:15
and yeah, those just screw out a bit
00:10:17
because I wanted to match the height of the key caps.
00:10:21
And I'm actually gonna be using this NEC keyboard,
00:10:24
an APC-H412,
00:10:27
which has shallower, shorter keys
00:10:30
as opposed to something like an IBM Model M
00:10:32
that I would normally use.
00:10:34
I mean, look how tall those keys are.
00:10:36
In fact it's actually too tall to even fit inside,
00:10:42
like there, you see how much the gray plastic, the height?
00:10:45
It just kind of floats on top,
00:10:48
even with the nuts all the way screwed in,
00:10:51
but yeah, these? Got it adjusted, so.
00:10:54
[joystick rattling]
00:10:55
[laughs]
00:10:56
It's really cool feeling.
00:10:58
Anyway let's go ahead and get this adhered to there.
00:11:12
Nice. As for the holster,
00:11:14
I guess I'm just gonna put it here.
00:11:16
I mean, we don't really need it.
00:11:17
We should install it.
00:11:20
How often do they think
00:11:22
you're gonna be taking that off of there
00:11:23
to put it on the side of your monitor?
00:11:26
But there it is.
00:11:27
I mean, I guess you could also use it
00:11:29
just as a mouse holder, right?
00:11:32
I mean this kind of thing was a thing back in the day,
00:11:37
but anyway.
00:11:39
All right, let's get this computer turned on
00:11:41
and try out our KeyStik.
00:11:43
[keyboard clicking]
00:11:44
Mm, always in such a reflective mood
00:11:47
when I use this lovely Compaq Presario 425.
00:11:51
So yeah, we have the joystick or the KeyStik...
00:11:56
plugged in, just wanna get some text here.
00:11:59
And it's definitely working pretty much as it should.
00:12:05
The left and right feels a little bit wonkier
00:12:07
than the up and down.
00:12:08
Up and down feels nice, but...
00:12:11
I did some adjusting
00:12:12
to see if I could get it any better.
00:12:14
This is about as good as I can get it,
00:12:16
at least on this keyboard.
00:12:18
[laughs]
00:12:20
I really do doubt the claim though
00:12:23
that it is "much faster than the cursor keys."
00:12:25
I'm gonna say no, but whatever.
00:12:27
Let's try it out.
00:12:28
So a platformer seems like an obvious choice.
00:12:32
And let's go for this.
00:12:36
Because, of course, Commander Keen, episode four.
00:12:42
[PC speaker sounds]
00:12:43
[laughs]
00:12:46
That is immediately, oddly satisfying, I gotta say.
00:12:56
Dude.
00:13:05
This is awesome.
00:13:07
[laughs]
00:13:08
This is really cool.
00:13:10
All right.
00:13:11
Ah, I keep accidentally pressing the space bar.
00:13:14
I'm not used to Control and Alt being so small on this,
00:13:19
or close together.
00:13:20
This is just such a long space bar in this keyboard.
00:13:22
It's like the longest space bar.
00:13:24
I mean, look at that thing!
00:13:25
Okay, so that worked very well.
00:13:27
I wanna try out a flight -- Oops, flight simulator of sorts.
00:13:33
And we're gonna go with LHX
00:13:35
because it is a personal favorite.
00:13:38
And while it does allow you to play with the keyboard,
00:13:46
the way that the keyboard works in this game is,
00:13:50
well, I don't think it's gonna work very well with this.
00:13:52
[laughs]
00:13:53
So yeah, you like, you move it around in steps
00:13:57
and you can't hold it down.
00:14:01
So it kind of defeats the purpose.
00:14:04
That being said though,
00:14:06
this already does feel slightly more natural, so to speak.
00:14:10
[PC speaker, keyboard noises]
00:14:15
Actually, yeah, this is pretty cool.
00:14:18
I like it better than just the arrow keys.
00:14:20
I don't know.
00:14:21
Maybe it's just the mental difference
00:14:24
of having like an actual little joystick
00:14:27
to fondle down here that makes it feel a little better.
00:14:30
Yeah, that's actually pretty cool.
00:14:33
I mean, sure, you have to do it in steps,
00:14:34
but...
00:14:38
I will destroy you. [rapid space bar tapping]
00:14:44
[laughs] Complete overkill.
00:14:46
Oh, that Hind is down.
00:14:49
So let's move over to another flight sim
00:14:51
that if I recall, should work just fine.
00:14:56
Even better.
00:14:57
"No joystick found."
00:14:58
Well, that -- it does not know our secret power.
00:15:01
So yeah, with this one,
00:15:02
you can actually hold,
00:15:04
and you can see there, I'm just moving the rudder.
00:15:08
Yeah.
00:15:09
And then up and down.
00:15:11
Takes a second to kick in
00:15:13
cuz, you know, it is still a keyboard after all,
00:15:15
but...
00:15:16
And you can move it in steps, of course, if you still...
00:15:19
Whoops.
00:15:20
If you still want to,
00:15:21
but yeah, ideally, this should actually
00:15:26
make a little more sense.
00:15:29
So let's get up to speed here in our little Cessna.
00:15:35
Meigs Field, rest in peace.
00:15:40
There we go.
00:15:44
You can just hold it down,
00:15:46
whereas you couldn't do that in LHX.
00:15:49
It's just that delay, you know, getting back
00:15:51
once, you know, you have the keyboard buffer,
00:15:54
just the auto repeat kicking in takes a second or two.
00:15:59
Although I guess if you were to go in like
00:16:00
the BIOS of your computer
00:16:02
and just completely reduce that down,
00:16:04
or you know, whatever way that you have in your computer
00:16:07
to change the repeat rate
00:16:08
and how fast the repeating of keys kicks in...
00:16:11
then you could make that pretty instantaneous.
00:16:14
[mimics airplane noises]
00:16:15
Okay, whoop, well, there goes that.
00:16:19
Tried to correct, but it took too long to do so.
00:16:22
Well, so just go ahead.
00:16:25
[game screeching]
00:16:27
Such a painful noise.
00:16:28
Pretty darn cool, I gotta say, for this thing
00:16:34
just being as simple as it is.
00:16:36
It's really effective,
00:16:38
especially in a flight sim like that.
00:16:39
You know, it would just help
00:16:41
to change the keyboard repeat rate,
00:16:44
how quick it starts repeating characters
00:16:46
in order for it to work holding it down.
00:16:48
All right, so let us go with a fighting game.
00:16:50
I mean, that's another obvious choice, right?
00:16:53
So I got One Must Fall 2097 here.
00:16:55
I'm gonna go with,
00:16:56
let's go with Steffan.
00:16:59
And let's get a bunch of random colors.
00:17:03
Nice.
00:17:05
So let's see how this works.
00:17:08
Oops.
00:17:09
[laughs] And immediately got hit, okay.
00:17:13
Mm, combos.
00:17:18
I'm so used -- There we go.
00:17:20
I'm so used to playing this with a keyboard,
00:17:21
but that actually wasn't that bad.
00:17:24
Oh, dude.
00:17:25
See, look at this.
00:17:26
Ah, I still got smashed with -- daggone it, no! Angel!
00:17:30
Let's see if I can...
00:17:32
Oh yeah.
00:17:33
I'm jumping more than I want to
00:17:36
because I'm trying to go over here directly,
00:17:39
but it's pressing the up and right or left
00:17:43
a little too easy,
00:17:45
but maybe that, you know, that can be from the angle
00:17:48
or like the...
00:17:49
These are very lightweight keys,
00:17:51
like you barely press 'em
00:17:53
and it's very easy to press them down.
00:17:56
It's one reason I was wanting to try it on a Model M
00:17:59
because those are much heavier keys.
00:18:01
Maybe if I change my -- Whoa.
00:18:03
Change my stance here a bit.
00:18:09
It's interesting.
00:18:11
Oh, look at that.
00:18:13
[laughs]
00:18:15
Pulling off moves.
00:18:19
There we go.
00:18:21
All right, well, obviously,
00:18:22
cuz I've played it with a keyboard for decades,
00:18:25
but uh... yeah, it would not be my ideal controller for this.
00:18:32
[laughs]
00:18:33
All right, one more,
00:18:35
because David mentioned this.
00:18:38
Playing it with some football games.
00:18:40
So we're gonna play some Sensible World of Soccer.
00:18:44
Which I don't believe I've ever played on DOS
00:18:47
only on the Amiga, so I don't know how it controls.
00:18:51
Eh, guess we'll see.
00:18:53
Let's just play a match.
00:18:56
Iceland versus Saudi Arabia.
00:19:00
Oh yeah.
00:19:02
Delightful little pixel people.
00:19:08
Okay, let us see if I can figure this out.
00:19:10
Okay, well, oh my goodness.
00:19:17
Oh boy.
00:19:20
Is this supposed to go this fast?
00:19:22
[laughs]
00:19:23
Oh-ho-ho.
00:19:26
What in the world. Ahh!
00:19:28
This doesn't seem right at all.
00:19:32
Yeah, I'm gonna blame it on the speed.
00:19:35
Look at that crap.
00:19:36
Yeah, I'm totally not seeing any speed options.
00:19:40
[laughs] Well.
00:19:43
All right, let us try this again with a muddy field.
00:19:46
Maybe that'll slow people down.
00:19:49
Oh my word. Ahh!
00:19:53
It's so fast.
00:19:57
Oh this is madness.
00:19:58
Get the ball.
00:20:01
[laughs] [keyboard clicking in vain]
00:20:04
Ehh, look at this crap, look at this crap!
00:20:07
Look at -- oh my goodness, was that an own goal?
00:20:08
Did they do it? I couldn't even tell.
00:20:09
It's ridiculous.
00:20:13
What is this?
00:20:16
I don't know.
00:20:17
[laughs]
00:20:19
Whatever.
00:20:20
Well, I will say that this thing
00:20:25
may just be the key to joy in my life.
00:20:28
This is lovely.
00:20:29
[laughs]
00:20:31
Honestly works even better
00:20:33
than I was hoping that it would.
00:20:36
I don't know.
00:20:37
Like it reminds me almost of like one of those,
00:20:40
I forget even what they're called,
00:20:41
but like the little tiny joysticks that you got
00:20:45
for certain old computers.
00:20:46
I've used some on the Commodore 64
00:20:49
and ZX Spectrums and such,
00:20:50
or maybe by like Epyx and different companies.
00:20:54
I'll put up the name
00:20:56
of exactly what I'm thinking of on screen,
00:20:57
but yeah, it kind of reminds me of that.
00:20:58
It's like this little joystick.
00:21:01
It's not bad at all.
00:21:03
As long as you get it set to the right keys,
00:21:06
and y'know, it might help if you had slightly
00:21:09
heavier keys than this, but this isn't bad at all.
00:21:13
Really isn't.
00:21:14
[laughs]
00:21:16
I really like this.
00:21:18
I can see why they were popular,
00:21:19
especially if they cost like 13 bucks or the equivalent.
00:21:23
Yeah, thanks again to David for sending this in,
00:21:26
cuz yeah, I've just been looking to cover one of these
00:21:29
for so long. There he is. Oh, good old friend.
00:21:32
[laughs]
00:21:33
This is really neat.
00:21:35
Oh, what in the world?
00:21:36
It actually doesn't suck.
00:21:40
Yeah, you know, I really do enjoy this a lot more
00:21:43
than I thought I would.
00:21:44
I mean, it's such a silly idea,
00:21:47
but it works relatively darned well in practice,
00:21:51
I don't know.
00:21:52
I mean, it's really not faster or more accurate necessarily,
00:21:57
but in terms of what they were going for
00:21:59
in trying to provide almost arcade like or game controller,
00:22:04
handheld joystick situation
00:22:06
on a peripheral that you already have with your computer,
00:22:09
just the keyboard,
00:22:10
especially one that's mechanical.
00:22:12
I mean, it works really well.
00:22:14
And just the fact of having the stick on there at all
00:22:18
does a really effective job
00:22:20
at making it feel like a nice purpose-built peripheral,
00:22:24
I don't know.
00:22:25
Maybe it's just also because I've used these
00:22:27
and know how bad they are.
00:22:28
Again, see my Blerbs video if you wanna see,
00:22:32
well, the idea that's not quite fully baked.
00:22:36
This on the other hand is just really neat,
00:22:38
and I hope that you enjoyed taking a look at it with me.
00:22:40
[jazz intensifies]
00:22:52
And do check out my other episodes of Oddware
00:22:54
if you like this type of thing,
00:22:56
or stick around for new videos,
00:22:58
always in the works here on LGR.
00:23:00
And as always, thanks for watching!

Description:

Checking out this weird little Plawa arrow key joystick add-on for PC keyboards. It's a deceptively complex contraption from the 90s that clips onto your cursor keys and converts it into a mini joystick! Even better if you attach it to a mechanical keyboard, since you get that nice clicky feel. ● LGR links: https://www.patreon.com/LazyGameReviews https://www.twitter.com/LazyGameReviews https://www.facebook.com/unsupportedbrowser ● See my Blerb video on the numpad joystick here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9sNup3OzN0 ● Thank you for sending the KeyStik, David! https://www.youtube.com/c/DeckardGames ● All background music licensed from: http://www.epidemicsound.com/ 00:00 Introduction 00:36 KeyStik Overview & History 05:22 Unboxing & Inspection 09:53 Testing the KeyStik! 12:35 Commander Keen 4 13:30 LHX Attack Chopper 14:51 MS Flight Simulator 4.0 16:47 One Must Fall 2097 18:33 Sensible World of Soccer 20:20 SkiFree 21:39 Conclusion & Outro
