In this discussion about the nature of reality Rupert and a questioner explore topics such as how it is possible that objects are not real and how our thoughts and perceptions shape our world. They also discuss how art can be used as a form of self-inquiry. Rupert explains that perceiving refracts the one reality and makes it appear as many. Thinking then further substantiates those things and this makes the appearance of multiplicity and diversity very real. When the filter of thought is removed, the forms still exist and we still perceive forms, but those forms are less separate from us. Great art has the capacity to cause thought to drop away in this way. The Zen masters, achieved this when they painted a landscape — they wanted the perceiver to merge in the perceived. Cezanne was the opposite — he wanted the mountain to merge in the I.
