00:00:08
welcome to a new Harry's garage video
00:00:11
and as you can see we're back in in
00:00:13
terral's workshop because this is part 5
00:00:17
of the Lamborghini Espada engine rebuild
00:00:20
and there's been a slight pause I look
00:00:22
back and we did the last video sort of
00:00:24
beginning of December and what we've
00:00:25
been waiting for were the Pistons to
00:00:28
arrive they've actually were being made
00:00:30
in America and they're made exactly to
00:00:33
size for the car they're not on the
00:00:34
shelf items but they're back in the
00:00:37
workshop and that means we're at the
00:00:39
stage where we can rebuild the engine so
00:00:41
I've come up have a quick look at what
00:00:44
else is going on in this workshop
00:00:45
there's always good stuff around this I
00:00:47
see the mirrors got stripped as well all
00:00:49
the engines come apart on that as well
00:00:51
but what I'm really interested is going
00:00:53
join Marcus and Ian or at the bench and
00:00:55
what we're gonna do is just start the
00:00:58
engine rebuild in this video so I can't
00:01:00
wait to see it how's this action
00:01:03
stations by the look of it yes yes yes
00:01:05
again Ian and you yeah thank you Marcus
00:01:09
you're putting some grotty stuff on the
00:01:12
bearings already aren't you oh yeah go
00:01:14
yeah just wait the Bethany that's a
00:01:17
little graphite paste I find you you
00:01:20
knew they live yeah oh I don't graph
00:01:22
that yeah and what's it do you that's
00:01:23
just on the bearings just going on the
00:01:25
bearings before you actually input the
00:01:27
crank into place it's it's it's very
00:01:29
busy stuff really because it sticks to
00:01:31
everything like glue yes and but as soon
00:01:33
as the oil gets round and sort of it
00:01:35
just washes off in term what's the word
00:01:38
dissolves into the engine oil right
00:01:39
because sometimes I've seen people
00:01:41
squirt oil on all the berries before
00:01:43
putting the crank here this is I see the
00:01:47
better yeah yeah because that well until
00:01:50
the old pressure builds up that will
00:01:51
carry on so
00:01:52
working so it's it's all about that
00:01:55
starter I ought to see these Pistons how
00:01:58
believe they're so lovely and they've
00:02:01
got a little trick bits on here yes
00:02:03
they've got this is Tiff's lon you were
00:02:06
saying it is a little black skirts yeah
00:02:09
it's well it's all it's it's a friction
00:02:11
reducer so the yeah that's that's it's a
00:02:15
Teflon spray Don coating I've never seen
00:02:17
that before yeah it's well a lot of
00:02:20
Pistons manufacturers put bits on black
00:02:22
patches on their pit rice and they quite
00:02:25
often paint believe it or not right it's
00:02:27
not made better these this is the real
00:02:29
deal these have been made by a company in
00:02:32
California yeah we were I approached the
00:02:37
British companies companies in the US
00:02:39
they were about the friendliest and
00:02:40
renewable resistant manufacturer so I've
00:02:43
gone with them and they are yeah same
00:02:46
compression is standard right they're
00:02:48
forged so they will they're built to go
00:02:51
to high revs and this is all just a
00:02:53
really wide for people haven't seen some
00:02:55
of the other videos one of my requests
00:02:57
is we're gonna rebuild the engine
00:02:59
I wanted it sort of a top spec I've
00:03:01
always been a bit jealous of the Miura
00:03:03
that was higher revving than the Espada
00:03:06
so how I'm not going to be using 8,000
00:03:09
rpm all the time but this engine
00:03:11
basically should is capable so yeah
00:03:14
you've investigated how we could do it
00:03:15
and one of the things we had to do was
00:03:17
upgrade the quality of the Pistons from
00:03:19
cast to for just correct way around yes
00:03:23
yeah so that's done so these are forged and
00:03:27
they are at mr. too nice to put inside
00:03:29
the apparently they had ordered 13 so I
00:03:32
could have one piston for the desk just
00:03:39
got thirty twelve and these and these
00:03:42
aren't on the Shelf item are there's a
00:03:44
lot these are specially made specially
00:03:47
made so you could say way that yes
00:03:50
they're made to your size you'd say what
00:03:53
size you want them yeah that's the case
00:03:54
that's right well that the standard bore
00:03:56
is 82 millimeters right and we've
00:04:00
actually gone for eighty two point five
00:04:01
to make sure we actually board beyond
00:04:04
any miss Shay firmness in the bores so
00:04:08
as I mentioned to you previously yeah
00:04:10
the extra half a millimeter diameter
00:04:12
gives us about 40 CC 40 CC I mean you're
00:04:17
really noticed yeah I don't know yeah
00:04:20
but these these should be that these
00:04:23
will drag a lot less up and down the
00:04:24
cylinders than the original piston as
00:04:26
well so you think there's a bit of a
00:04:28
horsepower gain from having the tears I
00:04:29
dunno yeah yeah I mean on a on a v12
00:04:33
that revs to sort of 7,000 the
00:04:39
frictional losses and pumping losses can
00:04:41
be a hundred two hundred and fifty brake
00:04:42
horsepower over snip yep absolutely
00:04:45
so yeah we don't know what the gain is
00:04:48
but it's yeah yeah it doesn't get all of
00:04:50
that back does it it just reduces it a
00:04:52
little yeah every little helps
00:04:54
yeah and then you've done the balls on
00:04:59
this to match this so you waited for the
00:05:00
pistons arrived measure the ball oh
00:05:02
sorry the pistons is that right so that
00:05:04
is exactly right yeah yeah I mean the
00:05:06
piston manufactures have given us a very
00:05:10
precise specifications to work from and
00:05:12
I chose the material so this is not
00:05:14
NASCAR spec aluminium riot this is
00:05:17
somewhere in between rice around her in
00:05:20
NASCAR no no I
00:05:21
exactly yeah good well sorry it's time
00:05:27
to break the news to you know the sir
00:05:31
yet they've been they are bespoke so
00:05:33
they've been made the
00:05:34
actual skirt clearances two and a half
00:05:37
thousands of an inch we've actually made
00:05:40
it just a tiny bit more but modern
00:05:43
pistons have a much smaller clearance
00:05:45
than all the pista - because they try
00:05:46
the material is more high-tech and it
00:05:48
doesn't it doesn't sort of expanding
00:05:50
contras and changed quite a cyclic rise
00:05:52
okay well so the first stage in the
00:05:57
engine rebuild then is that crank going
00:05:59
into there then exactly but in Bolton it
00:06:02
all up yeah I'd better let you crack on there I
00:06:05
would suggest this a bit with that and
00:06:07
then we can get on to stage two and I'm
00:06:09
gonna be here long enough I think see a
00:06:12
few Pistons getting well let's hope so
00:06:14
yeah so we've blown everything out yeah
00:06:16
it's been polished yeah
00:06:18
we've put the new shell bearings in as
00:06:22
you call them and you're out
00:06:23
yeah it's really aura but you know
00:06:25
that's fine like me I've got this other
00:06:27
one here yeah well I'll let you crack on
00:06:29
with that because I'm not getting
00:06:31
involved until what this bits rocket
00:06:33
otherwise we're gonna crank or pond rod
00:06:35
poking out of here oh so y'all that was
00:06:37
the one that met cassidy
00:06:39
okay yeah like I'm in a delivery room I
00:06:46
shouldn't buy needs to go up at your end
00:06:51
a bit much
00:06:53
it's it yeah you still got the way yeah
00:06:56
yeah looking good right this ain't sure
00:07:03
there we go okay lovely face on the
00:07:11
web's isn't it on the bearings yes this
00:07:14
is normally out in fresh air
00:07:16
on other engines than those of the crank
00:07:18
that is actually incessantly inside the
00:07:20
crank case here how much do you think a
00:07:23
crank is worth for one of these and if
00:07:26
you were to buy one from Lamborghini now
00:07:27
yes about 14,000 pounds well that's a
00:07:32
tease pass through those 17,000 yes a
00:07:37
little bit postage automated yes I think
00:07:42
there's certainly an Italian president
00:07:43
over personally yes so next stage is the
00:07:55
claps then main bearing caps of which
00:07:58
there are 677 enormous bearings then at
00:08:05
the end of the cranks there's their
00:08:07
bigger area yes a very different
00:08:11
not not diameter wise but width wise
00:08:14
yeah and you have to sort of order them
00:08:19
as individual parts
00:08:20
strangely enough because they've all got
00:08:22
individual part numbers
00:08:32
and we huh
00:08:35
first were in place now and what are you
00:08:37
doing about the the nuts but we'll go
00:08:42
back the ones that have been used before
00:08:44
yes but that on the piste well we'll get
00:08:47
to the business a minute but so these
00:08:49
have been reused to the threads you
00:08:51
haven't had to replace those is what
00:09:00
we're tightening them you know yeah
00:09:02
and even though manufacturers give you
00:09:05
talks and things it's actually about
00:09:07
feel it's how the have a thread than the
00:09:09
nuts are going on and so for example I
00:09:12
started my working life in a rolls-royce
00:09:15
and Bentley workshop Anna Rosa listen
00:09:19
Bentley didn't give torque figures on
00:09:21
engines so it was actually about feel
00:09:25
and about seat-of-the-pants the way if
00:09:27
you if you if you brought a torque
00:09:30
wrench into the workshop it was probably
00:09:32
an instantly psychoville Afeni service
00:09:34
because it's all about how the thread
00:09:36
actually it's all about the feel and how
00:09:38
the thread actually responds if you can
00:09:41
feel weakness in it as you tighten it
00:09:42
first you finished
00:09:48
I can tell these are going on
00:09:50
beautifully these knots yeah
00:09:52
normally for thread or nuts damaged you
00:09:54
talk hon type you can't hand those read
00:09:57
them no okay right tight on their tiny
00:09:59
washes are they they are very thin
00:10:01
they're delivered of Lamborghini these
00:10:03
washers they use them on the cylinder
00:10:05
head nuts as well they are super super
00:10:07
thin what I really want to do is make
00:10:10
sure that the cranks just feels nice
00:10:11
when all right any capture sort their
00:10:13
eyes see see how tight it is yeah or not
00:10:16
hopefully without being too too loose
00:10:20
it's all you know if it feels right it
00:10:23
is right right okay so then you've got
00:10:27
those funny things it's end float the
00:10:29
crank can sort of move this way in there
00:10:31
and you have to get those it will that's
00:10:33
the thrust washers are in just washes us
00:10:36
yeah and we've already checked the end
00:10:38
float actually and it is I guess it's as
00:10:40
it should be
00:10:41
so in that respect we're we're all right
00:10:45
desert so every time you press the
00:10:46
clutch pedals there it pushes against
00:10:49
the Craig's a crank has to hold the
00:10:51
pressure of the clothes and unmodern
00:10:54
cars a lot of cars these days yeah well
00:10:57
I say Morgan actually my adapt my idea
00:11:00
of modern before electrics etcetera here
00:11:03
you can't enough to push the clutch down
00:11:05
before you start the engine I I do that
00:11:08
I always think it this keeps the start
00:11:10
emotive not having eternal to give saxy
00:11:13
is that right but a lot of cars have an
00:11:14
electrical switch on them how they do
00:11:16
that as well and you can't start the
00:11:17
engine last year touchdown
00:11:19
yeah I always think to myself they must
00:11:20
wreak havoc with the thrust bearings so
00:11:23
would you start an old engine with the
00:11:25
press in the clutch I always do
00:11:27
personally yeah I always think that
00:11:30
starter motors having to turn all the
00:11:32
other gear comes in the gearbox makes
00:11:34
estimate but I agree yes like can't see
00:11:38
on camera but they're little studs
00:11:39
either side of the big stunts so is that
00:11:41
just a you had it yeah so famous for
00:11:45
bolt mains right which are beloved of
00:11:48
American hot rodders and things
00:11:51
and these have them as standard so yeah
00:11:54
it's it just stops everything moving
00:11:57
right it much because because it's
00:11:58
aluminium and not cast-iron yeah just
00:12:02
you know precautionary stuff as you say
00:12:05
this engine is actually a 4-1 engine
00:12:08
basically in it when he designed it I
00:12:11
think it's the one it was but that's why
00:12:13
I started life as a three liter three
00:12:15
and a half liter I couldn't say for sure
00:12:17
possibly it started life even as a three
00:12:20
liter because I cut my cotton and what
00:12:22
the capacity limit was in the early 60s
00:12:25
but certainly if it sort of after 18
00:12:28
months it went up to four you know their
00:12:29
own keeper does Rena but they completely
00:12:31
re-engineered the block it's it's not
00:12:34
the same block
00:12:35
I always think going back to original
00:12:36
Lamborghini early days the 350gt was a
00:12:39
heavier car in the Miura was much
00:12:41
lighter
00:12:42
so I guess that might be the reason for
00:12:45
leaders I don't know and yeah I suppose
00:12:48
Ferrari was going for later as well yes
00:12:51
it's the three and a half litre block
00:12:54
wasn't actually up to been a racing car
00:12:57
has a different sort of remit to a road
00:12:58
car doesn't yet as long as it lasts for
00:13:00
24 hours maximum or whatever is it a
00:13:03
road car it's it's late leader hard life
00:13:06
don't leave out cars there for a long
00:13:08
period we're gonna try and turn right
00:13:11
now yeah look at I'm gonna have to look
00:13:14
at that just oh that's lovely
00:13:19
yes I mean there's a bit us
00:13:22
it's an ease of movement so I'm gonna
00:13:25
say sticks is not sticks and it's just
00:13:26
there is it's it's all bolted together
00:13:29
you can feel that those berries are
00:13:30
tights aren't they yeah we're not gonna
00:13:33
hook them down yet those are nice but no
00:13:36
it's lovely isn't it sorry yes it's not
00:13:38
a toy that's an engine
00:13:45
how do I explain that oh yeah move
00:13:50
swiftly on oh dear
00:14:00
yes is taking longer than I expected
00:14:11
it's the obsessive in me yeah this is
00:14:15
normally reserved for cylinder head
00:14:16
tightening but they all feel absolutely
00:14:23
beautiful tightened up really nicely
00:14:25
okay
00:14:26
now still turns oh look at that yeah I
00:14:41
love it when a plan comes together
00:14:44
yeah like it's meant to be in there yeah
00:14:47
guy he's just seeing that spinning at
00:14:50
7000 rpm I just
00:14:51
yeah it doesn't compute does it Wow I
00:14:56
mean 6000 reps which of course almost
00:14:59
every engine turbo half-decent engine
00:15:02
does problems diesels and the Pistons
00:15:05
are flying up inside the balls a hundred
00:15:07
times a second
00:15:09
this isn't it right so the crank is now
00:15:15
in and spinning just lovely
00:15:18
what's next stage then we'll start
00:15:21
putting the Pistons and rods assemblies
00:15:23
in so that we've put the Pistons on the
00:15:26
rods with the new gutter pens the new
00:15:28
wrist pins as the Americans call them
00:15:30
guys yeah and if they again they felt
00:15:33
really really it felt really nice all
00:15:35
the clearances
00:15:36
you know we've checked and
00:15:37
double-checked all the clearances are
00:15:38
great and the connecting rods have been
00:15:41
away to be Iraq tested to be a
00:15:44
non-destructive texture tested they're
00:15:46
all fine so we can put it all back
00:15:49
together with some new began bearing
00:15:51
shells
00:15:52
right so you how you do because it
00:15:55
blocks the wrong way around these go in
00:15:57
from the at saw so we turn we do turn
00:16:00
the block out when you turn the book
00:16:01
over but then you got to get to the
00:16:02
Academy and that's the tricky bit
00:16:04
precise so we're gonna watch some magic
00:16:08
right there you got an awkward thing
00:16:11
called piston rings and all sources oh
00:16:13
yes piston ring compressor
00:16:20
just put loads of why we love these with
00:16:22
oil around here when you suspect the
00:16:27
pistons that what happens about the
00:16:29
Rings they just go as standard rings do
00:16:31
they well the ring the Rings are
00:16:34
designed for HTTP mill bores and
00:16:36
especially made for these persons are
00:16:38
but they're not the original modern
00:16:42
piston rings in order to reduce
00:16:43
frictional losses have a one millimeter
00:16:46
top piston ring this much thinner that
00:16:49
tetr-a one point 5 we see original bore
00:16:52
ghost better Lamborghini in the nineteen
00:16:53
seventies and sixties right and then
00:16:58
there's a scraper at the bottom exactly
00:17:00
which is three millimeters and the
00:17:02
original Lamborghini one was four and a
00:17:03
half that on there which is number one
00:17:22
that one actually one nearest the front
00:17:25
right wonders oh because they're
00:17:27
slightly stick yes exactly
00:17:31
most v12 czar like that so that the rods
00:17:36
can be next two years I'm eased on the
00:17:38
yeah
00:17:40
[Music]
00:17:42
yes so we're gonna knock this in
00:17:46
we have to watch the theater
00:17:51
so we got loads yeah
00:17:56
let's carefully do that okay hey presto
00:18:08
you say it goes through that colors that
00:18:11
lovely wrestled if anybody's wrestle an
00:18:14
engine rebuild without one of those
00:18:15
piston ring compressors I would buy one
00:18:18
now I've never had it as easy as that to
00:18:21
make sure that shells the right way
00:18:22
around
00:18:23
it's number two number isn't it exactly
00:18:25
when it separates s William but you just
00:18:27
want everything to be chapped
00:18:30
[Music]
00:18:35
Lamborghini actually put a little
00:18:38
can remember from taking it apart they
00:18:40
could little split pins through thee yes
00:18:44
is the hole in the big and bolt and the
00:18:47
split pin goes at least need nip up to
00:18:50
the nearest available slot us 44 pounds
00:18:54
to begins
00:18:55
[Music]
00:18:58
just spin this round so that you can
00:19:00
actually get a sit there we go see there
00:19:09
the numbers there's number two piston
00:19:11
and con rods and that's what we're
00:19:12
matching up those numbers they're lovely
00:19:15
EPS done in 1969 see ya right I'm gonna
00:19:21
leave Marcus just to put a few more
00:19:22
Pistons in there and con rods because I
00:19:25
just wanna have a look at this Spartacus
00:19:26
has been some work going on on that over
00:19:29
the last few weeks a little bit tidier
00:19:31
than when I last saw it yeah come
00:19:33
belaboring can we borrow you for a
00:19:35
minute there was layer upon layer of
00:19:38
yeah and zus coating wasn't there sort
00:19:41
of really thick under seal like bitumen
00:19:45
based yeah the old-fashioned stuff
00:19:48
you've taken quite a lot of that off but
00:19:51
it has been doing a good job viola
00:19:52
predict that the only absolutely yeah I
00:19:54
know there's no corrosion that's all
00:19:56
that's great it's astonishing job just a case of
00:19:59
giving it all a good scrub really would
00:20:01
deter JIT - yeah loyal and wrote dirt
00:20:05
off I suppose gonna be great when it
00:20:08
says 400 GT Espada you can see very
00:20:11
pleased if enough fur yeah yeah it's
00:20:13
definitely add Lamborghini yeah yeah
00:20:16
which is really good it's very pleasing
00:20:18
that it's all in such good condition
00:20:20
because yeah these are actually enclosed
00:20:22
but this is called the pontoon timeframe
00:20:25
if it's a repetitive basic layout yeah
00:20:27
and these these because they're enclosed
00:20:31
box actions that like all enclosed box
00:20:33
sections of Steel of this era either
00:20:36
they're metal on the inside because they
00:20:37
didn't paint them and be once that once
00:20:40
the divinity from the air gets in
00:20:41
through a tool a small pinhole or
00:20:43
something it can't get out and they just
00:20:44
sweat and the what moisture manifests
00:20:47
itself is rust that's the big enemy of
00:20:50
cars of this era but these are
00:20:51
absolutely lovely father yeah yeah and
00:20:54
he lose the ritual thank you
00:20:55
it doesn't look original and now it's
00:20:57
it's very solid good so yeah basically
00:21:00
you clean it all off spend a couple of
00:21:03
days in there with a scraper
00:21:06
getting it all nice and clean on the
00:21:33
roof so you've been trying out some
00:21:35
different sort of lasting thicknesses
00:21:37
and stuff isn't yeah we know dilemma
00:21:39
here isn't it was exactly the black roof
00:21:41
had one advantage where you'll explain
00:21:44
its how you glue it in place isn't it
00:21:47
well it's the black roof was was largely
00:21:49
opaque yeah and so all this lovely gooey
00:21:54
sealant that was around the outside here
00:21:56
you couldn't actually see it because it
00:21:58
was so dark
00:21:59
the trick with putting am a sort of more
00:22:02
clear roofing is going to be to not have
00:22:05
this horrible sploagie mess that you can
00:22:08
see right outside so we we means the
00:22:13
various options a lot of modern car wind
00:22:15
screens all car windows have a sort of
00:22:17
black border to them yes get rid of
00:22:20
things because they're all bonded in it
00:22:21
not
00:22:22
not use rubbing rubber seals anymore and
00:22:25
it sort of disguises all this the
00:22:27
sealant they use yeah but we can't
00:22:30
really do that with the plastic because
00:22:32
we got to be cared for one thing I'm
00:22:33
conscious office but it doesn't blow off
00:22:36
at my speed yeah well that was the first
00:22:38
test I did when I test drove the car was
00:22:40
just to go just over 71 miles now just
00:22:43
to see what the roof did the high-speed
00:22:45
how do you think yeah I've been you know
00:22:47
after 120 hours this wasn't a nice car
00:22:50
you know that parts the world I mean the
00:22:55
roof was absolutely fine but I think the
00:22:58
possible solution is looking at the
00:23:00
surround the windscreen has this stain
00:23:03
steel while here it is and maybe we do
00:23:06
something like that around here so it
00:23:08
actually looks more fitted so we say
00:23:10
yeah that would that would be a really
00:23:13
really good solution
00:23:14
it really would I think that might be
00:23:17
the way to go it wouldn't look out of
00:23:18
place nothing and it would save a lot of
00:23:20
it a lot of problems ya know a little
00:23:24
place you'd like that
00:23:26
still spins and it's got two Pistons in
00:23:28
[Music]
00:23:32
because I don't always do that always
00:23:34
some edges are really tight huh yeah yes
00:23:37
even must be vetted Syrian announcer
00:23:39
yeah okay
00:23:40
as we go along I'll get tighter the tens
00:23:46
ago we forget how far up into the
00:23:50
cylinder have they come isn't it that is
00:23:52
really quite a lot out isn't it car oh
00:23:55
yeah yeah well there's the valve timing
00:23:59
is critical because their valves are
00:24:02
literally two or three millimeters away
00:24:04
from the piston crowns if everything set
00:24:05
up properly when you know they just
00:24:07
narrowly miss each other that really is
00:24:10
right out if you get the valve timing a
00:24:14
tooth or two out on the chain it's bang
00:24:17
yeah you get a very loud clattering
00:24:19
noise yes yes that's not the thing that
00:24:27
is actually it because you couldn't we
00:24:28
could move those companies absolutely
00:24:31
yeah well it Bob aren't they yep that's
00:24:35
great
00:24:36
so next stage pisses overseeing bolt up
00:24:41
and then you've got build the heads up
00:24:42
and yes sir
00:24:43
we're waiting for the valve springs to
00:24:45
arrive still that says I finally arrived
00:24:49
at a formula with the valve spring
00:24:50
manufacturers yeah which is essentially
00:24:54
within percentage of what the Miura
00:24:55
spring started eyes sorry
00:24:58
and yeah so that's the other main cause
00:25:01
for concern for it if the engines can
00:25:03
read a bit more I oh yes it's part of
00:25:05
Al's floater just over 7,000 serious SVM
00:25:08
with the standard springs and then the
00:25:10
fact was they'd actually weakened over
00:25:12
time exactly so they needed to be
00:25:14
replaced and we've just made in that
00:25:15
little bit strong exactly terrific well
00:25:19
that's been great see the engine you
00:25:21
know start going back together
00:25:23
how many months is that's about four or
00:25:25
five months isn't it yeah that's
00:25:27
something like that to get all the parts
00:25:29
together but it's just magic just I just
00:25:32
think it's one of the most beautiful
00:25:33
engines and to see it sort of being
00:25:34
reborn it's just great thank you very
00:25:38
much okay yeah there we go so I hope you
00:25:41
enjoyed this video as well I hope you
00:25:43
have because there'll be some more
00:25:45
videos coming along very soon
00:25:54
you
