What’s up internet?
00:00:01
I am Manish from RebellionRider.com.
00:00:03
And today in this PL/SQL tutorial we will learn how to create PL/SQL stored procedures
00:00:09
with parameters in Oracle Database.
00:00:11
For those who are new to this stored procedure series, we have already discussed the foundation
00:00:17
theory in PL/SQL Tutorial 40 on Introduction to stored procedures.
00:00:22
We have also learnt how to create stored procedures without parameter in the previous tutorial.
00:00:29
You can find all the links in the description below.
00:00:32
Also those of you who are new to my YouTube channel a hearty welcome to the family!
00:00:37
Here on this channel we make learning Oracle Database fun.
00:00:41
So please do make sure to subscribe as many more interesting tutorials are on their way.
00:00:46
That being said, let’s start this PL/SQL tutorial.
00:00:50
Here I will do an example where I will create a stored procedure which will accept two parameters.
00:00:55
CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE emp_sal (dep_id NUMBER, sal_raise NUMBER)
00:01:02
IS Here is our procedure with name emp _ sal.
00:01:07
In the signature of this PL/SQL stored procedure we can see that it is accepting two parameters.
00:01:13
First is the dep _ id and the second is sal _ raise and both these parameters are of NUMBER
00:01:21
datatype.
00:01:22
Here I want to mention one thing; actually I forgot to mention this in the last tutorial.
00:01:28
whenever you create a PL/SQL procedure or a function without parameter, you don’t
00:01:34
put parenthesis followed by the name, unlike other programming languages.
00:01:38
Ok.
00:01:39
So let’s move forward and write the execution section of this procedure and find out what
00:01:44
is it gonna do?
00:01:45
BEGIN UPDATE employees SET salary = salary * sal_raise
00:01:52
WHERE department_id = dep_id; END;
00:01:55
/ So here we have the execution section of our
00:01:58
procedure.
00:01:59
By looking at the code of this execution section you must have understood that this procedure
00:02:04
is for giving a department wide salary raise to all the employees.
00:02:09
For a better understanding I have tried to make this code as simple as possible.
00:02:13
In the execution section we only have one DML statement which is UPDATE.
00:02:19
Using which we are updating the salary column of employees table.
00:02:23
As you can see in this update statement we have consumed both the parameters.
00:02:27
First parameter which is the dep _ id, is used to determine the ID of the department,
00:02:34
and second parameter which is sal _ raise will become the multiplication factor in the
00:02:40
salary raise.
00:02:41
You can write the business logic like this then wrap them up into a procedure and call
00:02:46
them in your app when needed.
00:02:49
This will give you more control on your app.
00:02:51
It will also save you from writing the same code again and again.
00:02:55
You can make this execution block and DML statement more sturdy as well as complex according
00:03:01
to the need of your project.
00:03:03
But for the purpose of demonstration of how to create PL/SQL stored procedure with parameter
00:03:09
I think this will suffice: Simple, Clean and Easy to understand.
00:03:14
So let’s execute this stored procedure and see whether it works or not.
00:03:21
Procedure emp _ sal compiled successfully.
00:03:25
Before winding up this tutorial here is today’s question for you.
00:03:30
Write a stored procedure with parameter for calculating 3rd highest salary of the employee.
00:03:36
Use the employees table of HR schema.
00:03:39
You can send your answers in the comment section down below or on my social profile.
00:03:44
All the links are in the description.
00:03:46
Hope this example helped you in learning the concepts of PL/SQL stored procedure creation.
00:03:52

00:04:05
That’s it for today on how to create PL/SQL stored procedure with parameters in Oracle
00:04:11
Database.
00:04:12
Thanks for watching.
