00:00:04
if the US were to go to war with China
00:00:06
today there's a good chance American
00:00:08
fighters would be facing a missile
00:00:10
disadvantage just a few years ago now
00:00:13
China fielded their pl15 longrange radar
00:00:16
guided air-to-air missile with an
00:00:18
advanced new miniaturized radar seeker
00:00:21
and a powerful new dual pulse rocket
00:00:23
motor said to give this weapon a range
00:00:25
in excess of 200 km that's better than
00:00:29
100 20 mil now this means if this weapon
00:00:32
performs as advertised it can outclass
00:00:35
even the latest iteration of America's
00:00:38
longest ranged air-to-air missile the
00:00:40
aim 120 amram giving Chinese Fighters
00:00:43
the potential opportunity to engage
00:00:45
American jets from further away than
00:00:48
they can respond we call this first kill
00:00:51
opportunity and the US Air Force took
00:00:54
losing it personally in 2017 they kicked
00:00:57
off a classified developmental effort to
00:01:00
field the most advanced and capable
00:01:02
air-to-air missile on the planet this
00:01:04
secretive new weapon went into testing
00:01:06
in 2020 and appears to have gone into
00:01:09
production in 2023 and yet to date
00:01:12
details and specifics about this new
00:01:14
weapon and its
00:01:16
capabilities remain very difficult to
00:01:18
come by let's talk about the highly
00:01:20
secretive aim 260 joint Advanced
00:01:23
tactical missile and why it could be the
00:01:26
most dominant air-to-air weapon ever
00:01:29
fielded I'm Alex Hollings and this is
00:01:33
air
00:01:41
power despite what you may read in
00:01:43
arguments on Reddit it's always good to
00:01:45
be a bit skeptical of the reported
00:01:47
maximum ranges of modern air-to-air
00:01:49
missiles most people don't realize that
00:01:52
the maximum range of these weapons very
00:01:54
rarely coincides with their effective
00:01:57
range against maneuvering targets like
00:01:59
enemy Fighters the truth is the maximum
00:02:02
reported ranges for these weapons
00:02:04
includes two distinct phases of flight
00:02:07
the first is the powered flight phase
00:02:09
which is exactly what you might think it
00:02:12
starts when the missile's motor ignites
00:02:14
and continues until all the fuel on
00:02:16
board has been expended which may happen
00:02:18
a bit faster than you might think even
00:02:21
Europe's meteor air-to-air missile Which
00:02:22
flies under power for longer than most
00:02:25
other modern weapons expends all the
00:02:27
fuel on board in about 60 seconds but
00:02:30
once all that fuel is gone the missile
00:02:31
moves on to its coasting phase which is
00:02:34
enabled by all the speed picked up by
00:02:36
the missile while flying under power as
00:02:38
well as any altitude it managed to gain
00:02:41
as well during that coasting phase these
00:02:43
weapons can maneuver but to a much
00:02:45
lesser extent and any change in course
00:02:48
scrubs flame speed which reduces its
00:02:51
overall range in other words if you
00:02:53
intend to try to hit a Target at the
00:02:55
maximum range of your radar guided
00:02:56
air-to-air missile it better be a pretty
00:02:59
sluggish one one like a tanker or an
00:03:01
awax but certainly not a fighter now
00:03:04
before I talk about any specifics at all
00:03:06
I want to get two disclaimers right out
00:03:08
there up front the first is that it's
00:03:10
important to understand that just about
00:03:12
every air-to-air missile in service on
00:03:14
the planet today is the subject of
00:03:17
improvement efforts that will change
00:03:19
their capabilities over time the second
00:03:22
is that it's important to understand
00:03:23
that the circumstances of a weapon's
00:03:25
launch I.E the launching platform speed
00:03:27
and altitude atmospheric conditions and
00:03:30
more all have a significant impact on a
00:03:32
weapon's overall range the A10 like all
00:03:36
missiles will reach further if launched
00:03:38
at 700 mph and 40,000 ft than they will
00:03:42
if launched at 350 mph at 20,000 ft
00:03:46
that's just how physics works so when we
00:03:48
talk about reported and estimated ranges
00:03:51
it's important to remember that we're
00:03:52
talking in Broad terms and Pilots know
00:03:55
not to expect maximum performance when
00:03:57
launching a weapon from sub op optimal
00:04:00
conditions now with that in mind the
00:04:02
four longest ranged air-to-air missiles
00:04:04
in service today depending on your
00:04:06
Source are Russia's r37 M with a claimed
00:04:09
range in excess of 300 km or about 186
00:04:14
Mi followed by the mbda meteor with a
00:04:17
claimed range of 200 km or about 124
00:04:21
miles then China's pl1 15 with a claimed
00:04:24
range of around 200 km again about 124
00:04:28
Mi and finally the latest A1 120d am Ram
00:04:32
with a reported range of 160 km or just
00:04:36
about 100 Mil but again these are
00:04:38
claimed maximum ranges of how far these
00:04:40
missiles can burn and then Coast into
00:04:43
very sluggish non-maneuvering targets
00:04:46
and while these are the figures that get
00:04:47
tossed around the most what actually
00:04:50
matters is each respective missiles No
00:04:52
Escape Zone or Nez now a missile's No
00:04:56
Escape Zone is the area around a
00:04:58
launching aircraft in which the the
00:04:59
target aircraft cannot evade the missile
00:05:02
using maneuvering alone in other words
00:05:05
it's the distance in which a hit is a
00:05:07
pretty sure thing and you probably won't
00:05:09
be surprised to hear that the actual No
00:05:12
Escape zones for these weapons are
00:05:14
usually not disclosed in fact you
00:05:16
usually can't even get good data about
00:05:18
how far these weapons travel during
00:05:20
their powered flight phase before
00:05:22
transitioning to cotic but by using
00:05:25
figures that are widely reported in the
00:05:26
media I have long since assessed that
00:05:29
Russia's r37 m is nowhere near the most
00:05:32
potent threat in the sky despite having
00:05:34
an immense claimed range in fact if you
00:05:37
ask me the deadliest missile in the air
00:05:39
today is hands down the mbda meteor even
00:05:43
if it offers only 2/3 of the claimed
00:05:45
range of the r37 m and that is very much
00:05:48
because of the meteor's No Escape Zone
00:05:51
you see unlike most air-to-air missiles
00:05:53
powered by a solid fuel rocket motor
00:05:55
that once ignited just burns until it's
00:05:57
done the meteor breathes air it's
00:06:00
powered by a Ram Jet that combines fuel
00:06:03
on board with atmosphere to extend its
00:06:05
range with a throttleable output that
00:06:08
allows the meteor missile to fly under
00:06:11
power for a reported maximum distance of
00:06:13
some 70 miles which means it can
00:06:16
continue to make course Corrections
00:06:18
under power for further than other
00:06:20
air-to-air missiles can but even with
00:06:23
meteor's ability to fly under power
00:06:25
further than its contemporaries The
00:06:27
International Institute for strategic
00:06:29
studies still estimates its No Escape
00:06:32
Zone to be as short as just 60 km or
00:06:35
about 37 Mi now that may sound like
00:06:38
meteor is ineffective at long range but
00:06:41
what it actually highlights is how all
00:06:43
air-to-air missiles including what may
00:06:45
be the most capable one in service today
00:06:48
struggle to hit a maneuvering Target at
00:06:51
triple digigit ranges and that brings us
00:06:53
to America's Workhorse Beyond visual
00:06:55
range weapon the aim 120 Advanced medium
00:06:58
range air air missile or amram as well
00:07:02
as the game 260 slated to replace it now
00:07:05
the am Rams been in service in one form
00:07:07
or another for more than 30 years now
00:07:09
entering service in late 1991 just after
00:07:13
the close of the Desert Storm air
00:07:14
campaign the amam saw its first kill the
00:07:17
following year in 1992 when a US Air
00:07:21
Force F-16 took down the fastest fighter
00:07:23
in history a MIG 25 foxbat over Southern
00:07:27
Iraq not a bad way to start six then am
00:07:30
Rams have chalked up at least 16 more
00:07:32
kills and 13 more battles including the
00:07:35
most recent American air-to-air victory
00:07:37
in which a US Navy Super Hornet took
00:07:39
down a Syrian s22 before it could engage
00:07:43
partner forces on the ground now there
00:07:45
have been multiple iterations and
00:07:47
upgrades of the amam in the years since
00:07:49
and today's more modern am120 DS are
00:07:52
said to have a range of between 75 and
00:07:55
100 miles maybe even a bit better back
00:07:57
in 2021 the US Air Force announced that
00:08:00
an f-15c armed with an A10 Am ram likely
00:08:04
an a10d scored the longest recorded
00:08:08
air-to-air kill in history against a bqm
00:08:11
167 subscale Target drone now they
00:08:14
didn't disclose the distance of that
00:08:16
engagement but it has been widely
00:08:18
claimed online that it was in excess of
00:08:20
100 miles meaning the amram definitely
00:08:23
still has legs but with China's pl15
00:08:26
entering service with a claimed range of
00:08:28
some 100 24 miles or so the Air Force no
00:08:32
longer feels that the amram's legs are
00:08:34
enough and in 2017 they secretly kicked
00:08:37
off development on a new missile to
00:08:40
replace the famed amram now in those
00:08:42
early stages of development we now know
00:08:45
that the Air Force considered a variety
00:08:47
of potential propulsion systems
00:08:49
including single or multi-stage rockets
00:08:52
and air breathing Ram Jets not unlike
00:08:54
the meteor air-to-air missile but we now
00:08:57
know that because of size restraints
00:08:58
based on this weapon being carried
00:09:00
internally by stealth Fighters that Ram
00:09:03
Jets were ruled out at least according
00:09:05
to statements made by Air Force
00:09:06
Brigadier General Anthony genitempo last
00:09:09
year it now appears pretty likely that
00:09:11
the a260 will be powered by a
00:09:14
throttleable multim mode solid fuel
00:09:16
rocket now that'll give this weapon the
00:09:18
ability to accelerate like a solid fuel
00:09:21
rocket when necessary and the Air Force
00:09:23
has already stated that it will come
00:09:25
with a higher top speed than the Am ram
00:09:28
which has a reported top speed of Mach 4
00:09:30
but more than just fast that'll also
00:09:32
allow the weapon to throttle back its
00:09:35
fuel burn to fly under power for greater
00:09:38
distances allowing it to make course
00:09:40
Corrections under power further in its
00:09:42
flight path to engage maneuvering
00:09:44
targets at greater distances than ever
00:09:47
before effectively giving this weapon
00:09:49
the acceleration of the Am ram at
00:09:51
shorter distances and the extended No
00:09:53
Escape Zone of the meteor or likely
00:09:56
better at extended ones but giving the
00:09:59
AIM 260 the range that it needs is no
00:10:01
walk in the park for Lockheed Martin
00:10:03
because this weapon has to be carried
00:10:05
internally by stealth Fighters like the
00:10:07
F22 Raptor it needs to have similar
00:10:10
exterior Dimensions to today's A1 120s
00:10:14
so how do you double the range of a
00:10:15
weapon without more space to store fuel
00:10:18
well potentially through a number of
00:10:20
avenues including producing more
00:10:21
efficient Motors that use highly loaded
00:10:24
grain propellants that are already in
00:10:26
development for other systems and that
00:10:28
idea is not without precedent all the
00:10:30
way back in 2012 loed Martin was already
00:10:33
talking about their radar guided Cuda
00:10:35
air-to-air missile which would be about
00:10:37
half the size of today's amram while
00:10:40
offering the same or greater range and
00:10:43
more recently rathon followed suit with
00:10:45
similar claims about their paragan
00:10:47
air-to-air missile in other words if
00:10:49
these weapons can offer similar range to
00:10:51
today's amram in half the size then it
00:10:54
stands to reason that a new weapon
00:10:56
leveraging similar technology that is
00:10:58
the same size as the Am ram may be able
00:11:01
to offer twice the operational range and
00:11:04
recent expert assessments substantiate
00:11:07
that possibility it's now estimated that
00:11:09
the a260 will enter service with a range
00:11:12
of more than 185 miles that's better
00:11:15
than 300 km meaning the a260 will match
00:11:19
or beat the claimed range of Russia's
00:11:21
r37 M all while being able to throttle
00:11:25
back that burn and maneuver under power
00:11:28
further along its flight course than any
00:11:30
other inservice weapon making it
00:11:32
extremely dangerous not just for
00:11:34
sluggish targets but for maneuvering
00:11:37
ones as well now initially it was
00:11:39
reported that the a260 would reach
00:11:41
initial operating capability by 2022 but
00:11:45
that year came and went and the a260
00:11:47
Never entered service it sure looks as
00:11:49
though fullscale testing began in April
00:11:52
of 2020 with at least 30 flights of
00:11:55
full-scale aerial targets qf1 16s we're
00:11:58
talking remote
00:12:59
number of f-15s flew into Desert Storm
00:13:02
carrying a10s and it wouldn't be a
00:13:05
tremendous shock if we learned that a
00:13:07
small number of f-22s are carrying a
00:13:10
260s today in fact just a few years ago
00:13:13
the Air Force spent $6.5 million on a
00:13:16
joint Advanced tactical missile storage
00:13:18
facility on Hill Air Force Base in Utah
00:13:21
just to store these weapons in a highly
00:13:23
classified and secretive setting to
00:13:25
prevent any ouling eyes from getting a
00:13:26
peek at them while they're in testing
00:13:28
and whatever else then there is at least
00:13:31
one more credible rumor associated with
00:13:33
the a260 that I think is worth
00:13:35
addressing and that's the possibility
00:13:37
that this weapon will come with a
00:13:39
multimode Seeker you see today's
00:13:41
air-to-air missiles usually come with
00:13:43
one of two types of guidance systems
00:13:46
either an infrared or heat seeking
00:13:48
guidance system or a radar Seeker in
00:13:51
fact today's most advanced radar guided
00:13:53
weapons actually carry a miniature
00:13:55
active electronically scanned array
00:13:56
radar right in their nose but looks as
00:13:59
though Lockheed Martin actually intends
00:14:01
to stuff both of those forms of advanced
00:14:03
guidance systems into this one missile
00:14:06
giving it the ability to detect and
00:14:08
track targets using its onboard radar
00:14:10
seeker at long range as well as the
00:14:13
ability to track those targets using
00:14:15
their heat signatures as well which
00:14:17
could be incredibly useful when engaging
00:14:19
stealth aircraft at long range which may
00:14:21
not always produce a sufficient radar
00:14:23
return to guide the weapon in and
00:14:25
depending on how advanced the hardware
00:14:27
is inside this weapon it may even be
00:14:29
able to fuse those two disparate data
00:14:32
sets into a single Battlefield
00:14:34
perspective allowing it to pull data
00:14:36
from both radar and infrared Seekers to
00:14:38
make sure that it stays locked onto the
00:14:40
aircraft regardless of what types of
00:14:42
countermeasures that aircraft May employ
00:14:45
now not all that long ago the Air Force
00:14:47
said that they expect a260 production to
00:14:50
Eclipse that of the amam by 2026 but I'm
00:14:53
not sure if they mean standard amam
00:14:56
production figures which usually floats
00:14:58
at between 500 to 800 missiles a year or
00:15:01
more recent amram production which has
00:15:03
ballooned up to 1,200 or more missiles
00:15:06
per year as conflicts continue to emerge
00:15:08
around the world but regardless this
00:15:10
means the Am ram and a260 will serve
00:15:13
side by side at least for a while as Am
00:15:15
ram production begins to slow and a260
00:15:18
production continues to climb eventually
00:15:21
seeing the Am ram phased out in favor of
00:15:24
its younger long-ranged sister currently
00:15:26
the F-22 Raptor is the first aircraft
00:15:29
slated to carry the a260 and believe it
00:15:32
or not the second aircraft on the Slate
00:15:35
are the collaborative combat aircraft in
00:15:37
development right now to fly as AI
00:15:40
enabled drone wingmen for the sixth
00:15:42
generation fighters in development and
00:15:44
it may be worth noting that there's at
00:15:45
least been some discussion of arming
00:15:47
drones including the mq9 Reaper and The
00:15:50
xq58a Valkyrie with aim 260s in the not
00:15:54
too distant future to support longrange
00:15:56
engagements using Target data relayed by
00:15:59
forward stealth Fighters like the F-35
00:16:02
the F35 is the third aircraft on the
00:16:05
list slated to receive this weapon and
00:16:07
from there it'll trickle out to the rest
00:16:09
of the fleet likely with the F-15 next
00:16:11
in line now as I've mentioned on this
00:16:13
channel before the a260 is actually only
00:16:16
one of maybe a half dozen air-to-air
00:16:19
missiles an active development for the
00:16:21
US military or by the military's Prime
00:16:24
contractors as we speak and in fact we
00:16:27
may yet find that the aim2 C even with a
00:16:30
185 plus mile range may not ultimately
00:16:33
be America's longest ranged air-to-air
00:16:36
missile in the not too distant future as
00:16:39
several oversized air-to-air missiles
00:16:41
that couldn't be carried internally by
00:16:43
the F-22 or F-35 are also in development
00:16:47
and just as we said for the a260 using
00:16:49
similar technology to the Cuda or
00:16:52
paragan an even bigger missile could
00:16:54
offer even greater range of course even
00:16:57
as the US continues development on all
00:16:59
these weapons its adversaries are not
00:17:01
resting on their Laurels China's next
00:17:03
long-range air-to-air missile the pl21
00:17:07
is also in active development and is
00:17:09
expected to be a Ramjet powered weapon
00:17:11
similar to Europe's meteor missile in
00:17:13
other words the race to field the next
00:17:15
generation of dominant air-to-air
00:17:17
weapons is very much underway but at a
00:17:20
certain point the challenge becomes less
00:17:22
about increasing the range of the weapon
00:17:24
and more about having accurate target
00:17:26
data at such extreme distances
00:17:29
but that's a topic for another video and
00:17:32
with that ends this edition of air power

Description:

Let's delve into the world of cutting-edge air-to-air missile technology with the AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile (JATM) — the highly anticipated successor to America's AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM). With air combat ranges continuing to grow, the United States needs a new beyond-visual-range weapon to stay competitive... But the AIM-260 isn't looking to compete... It's looking to dominate. 📱 Follow Sandboxx News on social Twitter: https://twitter.com/sandboxxnews Instagram: https://www.facebook.com/unsupportedbrowser Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/unsupportedbrowser TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@sandboxxnews 📱 Follow Alex Hollings on social Twitter: https://twitter.com/AlexHollings52 Instagram: https://www.facebook.com/unsupportedbrowser Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/unsupportedbrowser TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/404?fromUrl=/alexhollings52 Citations: https://www.airandspaceforces.com/new-official-art-reveals-advanced-f-22-capabilities-possibly-jatm/ https://www.iiss.org/online-analysis/military-balance/2024/01/air-to-air-missiles-push-the-performance-payload-envelope/ https://www.iiss.org/en/online-analysis/military-balance/2019/10/aim-260-missile-us-air-force/ https://www.twz.com/43235/testing-of-air-forces-secretive-new-long-range-air-to-air-missile-is-now-well-underway https://www.twz.com/28796/new-aim-260-missiles-are-so-secretive-they-will-require-a-custom-storage-bunker-at-hill-afb https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/trecms/pdf/AD1178142.pdf https://www.airandspaceforces.com/jatm-start-production-collaborative-combat-aircraft/ https://aviationweek.com/term/lockheed-martin-aim-260-jatm https://www.nationaldefensemagazine.org/articles/2023/9/1/air-force-completes-first-flight-test-for-latest-amraam-variant https://www.key.aero/article/usafs-new-air-air-missile-aim-260-jatm https://www.mbda-systems.com/product/meteor/ https://www.mbda-systems.com/?action=force-download-attachment&attachment_id=16346 https://www.airforce-technology.com/projects/meteor-beyond-visual-range-air-air-missile/ https://premium.globalsecurity.org/military/world/china/pl-15.htm https://odin.tradoc.army.mil/WEG/Asset/PL-15_(Thunderbolt-15)_Chinese_Active_Radar-Guided_Very_Long_Range_Air-to-Air_Missile https://www.iiss.org/en/online-analysis/military-balance/2022/09/analysis-air-to-air-warfare-speed-kills/ https://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/china/pl-21.htm https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/aviation/a46042683/china-shows-off-oversized-air-to-air-missile/
