God is a genius and really humble as the

title of it is the spiritual evolution

rediscovering the greatest story ever

Spirit everybody in this room wants to

meet Jesus not as a doctrine but as a

person and we want to meet him where we

hurt because we want to be free and

that's your specialty in your delight to

00:03:39

reveal Jesus not simply to us but in us

00:03:42

so we give you permission Holy Spirit to

00:03:45

work behind our watchful dragons and our

00:03:47

defenses and turn the lights on so that

00:03:50

we can meet Jesus all over again and

00:03:53

encounter him and in his face and

00:03:56

through his eyes see his father our

00:04:00

Father as he really is some of us need

00:04:04

to have physical healing all of us need

00:04:08

to have internal healing of our wounds

00:04:11

and sorrows we bring those to you Holy

00:04:13

Spirit we ask you to reveal Jesus in us

00:04:15

in his name amen hmm

the the undiluted gospel as I call it

the truth of all truths when you hear it

00:04:31

it astonishes your heart and it creates

00:04:36

an ignited conversation and when you

00:04:40

don't hear it and your heart's not

00:04:42

astonished you have to fake it you have

00:04:46

to pose and if you grew up in situations

00:04:49

like many of us have where you never

00:04:51

have seen an astonished heart you don't

00:04:55

necessarily know what you're missing but

00:04:57

our brothers and sisters in the early

00:04:59

church wrote about Jesus so that we

00:05:02

could have an encounter with him that

00:05:05

would blow our minds and astonish our

00:05:07

hearts and create a conversation that's

00:05:09

bigger than all of us

00:05:10

so my entire adult life I didn't know

00:05:13

this at the time but I can see looking

00:05:15

back my job has been rediscover the

00:05:18

gospel rediscover what this is about

00:05:21

what was it that blew Paul's mind what

00:05:24

was it that captured John in theater and

00:05:26

sent them preaching and teaching women

00:05:28

to sacrifice their lives of course it

00:05:31

was Jesus we all know that but somehow

00:05:34

our vision of Jesus has become so

00:05:36

watered down we can talk about him and

00:05:38

it doesn't do anything here are you

00:05:40

kidding me Saul of Tarsus he's spitting

00:05:44

nails he's angry he's got papers from

00:05:46

the big boys he's going to kill

00:05:48

Christians and he gets stopped in his

00:05:51

tracks and his entire world changes and

00:05:54

that man never once gave up after that

00:05:55

he saw something he encountered

00:05:58

something and it wasn't the theology and

00:06:01

it wasn't even news it was a person and

00:06:05

he discovered him in the least likely

00:06:07

place in the universe inside of himself

00:06:10

Galatians chapter 1 when God who set me

to reveal his son in me

that's the astonished heart that's the

undiluted gospel Jesus Christ is in you

and you're in him and he did that ask

him if it's true that's how easy it is

ask him if true so our brother John the gospel

writer and Paul and Peter have left us

stories in books so that we wouldn't not

miss the point

and we've missed the point and it's okay

because we're right on schedule

and this is this is coming from several

different angles at once we were told I

00:06:56

was told as a matter of the heart of the

gospel is that the human race is

00:07:01

separated from God well if you're

00:07:05

separated from God you've got to figure

00:07:06

out a way back which one is going to be

00:07:09

the right one most of you in this room

00:07:11

like me have tried two or three or four

00:07:13

different versions of how to get back

00:07:15

the blessed thing about where we are as

00:07:18

we know they didn't work they didn't

00:07:21

astonish our heart they didn't where

00:07:23

where is the truth that sets us free

00:07:24

where is this joy unspeakable full of

00:07:27

glory that Peter talked about all these

00:07:29

just terms no we were told were

00:07:32

separated from God which that is the the

00:07:34

ultimate fundamental lie in this

00:07:37

universe and we have bought in to

00:07:39

somebody else's idea of how to get back

00:07:41

and no matter which way it is it always

00:07:45

comes back to you you have to do

00:07:48

something to get across the divide and

00:07:50

even in Protestantism when we talk about

00:07:51

it's faith alone even then it's still my

00:07:54

faith and honestly I just buried my dad

00:07:58

in March he was that he had Lewy bodies

three years walking with my dad and I

your life many of us have spent a lot of

years trying to get there they're trying

to get there because you were told you

it risk in it and I want to show you how

John in his gospel how he understands

00:09:34

the nature of the problem of the human

00:09:38

race and how Jesus Christ is the

00:09:41

father's solution and I want you to see

00:09:44

this in the text of John because it's

00:09:46

been there for 2,000 years but most of

00:09:49

us have come at the story from a

00:09:52

different way that John does and we skip

00:09:53

right over some of these most amazing

00:09:55

statement being the first three verses

00:09:59

in the beginning was the word and the

00:10:02

Word was with God he was in the

00:10:05

beginning with God he was fully gone you

00:10:08

know I went back to check on a bunch of

00:10:10

different translations in John because I

00:10:11

expected John to say in the beginning

00:10:13

God was holy and humanity failed and

00:10:15

someone had to pay so Jesus had come and

00:10:18

paid for us I mean I mean where is that

00:10:23

where is that scenario laid out for us

00:10:25

that way I want you to see what John the

00:10:29

Apostle puts first not second not third

00:10:33

not fourth first and he never leaves the

00:10:37

thing not one second does he leave the

00:10:39

thing all the way through his gospel in

00:10:42

the beginning was the word and the word

00:10:45

is with the Father what the word is with

00:10:47

God in the word it was God many of you

00:10:49

see me through this illustration but I

00:10:52

want to deepen it the word translated

00:10:55

within our English Bibles cross into

00:10:58

Greek means to be turned towards it

00:11:00

means to be face to face

00:11:05

in the beginning was the word and the

word was turned towards face to face the

00:11:10

father are you kidding me why haven't we

00:11:15

been talking about this for 2,000 years

00:11:17

how have we even gotten beyond those

00:11:20

first verses this is the most

00:11:22

astonishing thing in the universe in the

00:11:24

beginning before creation was the word

00:11:27

he was there not just beside the father

00:11:30

not on a little chair beneath him he was

00:11:33

turned toward face to face with the

00:11:35

father himself son says this is where

00:11:38

you start this is where you begin this

00:11:41

is the truth he's not a Western

00:11:45

Christian he's a disciple of Jesus he's

00:11:48

an apostle he's telling you in the

00:11:51

beginning this is the beginning of the

00:11:53

story in the beginning was the word the

00:11:55

son whom he was turned toward his father

00:11:57

face to face and john is going to bring

00:11:59

us to understand more than anyone in the

00:12:02

new testament this person the Holy

00:12:03

Spirit but tonight I want to focus here

00:12:09

and I want to show you how John

00:12:12

understands who we are what happened to

00:12:15

us and how Jesus is the solution in the

00:12:18

beginning was the word and the word is

00:12:19

face to face with the father and then he

00:12:22

says all things came into being in that

00:12:34

person not one thing came into being

00:12:39

he's he's getting a prophetic word there

00:12:41

he's looking down through American

00:12:43

history he's realizing we're gonna have

00:12:45

we're gonna have to cut this nip this in

00:12:47

the bud as Barney Fife would say nip it

00:12:50

this idea of separation that you were

00:12:53

told is the truth about the human race

00:12:55

in the third verse of John's Gospel it

00:12:59

is obliterated in the beginning was the

00:13:02

word and the word is face to face with

00:13:04

God all things came into being through

00:13:06

him and not one thing came into being

00:13:09

apart from him you see this idea of

00:13:12

separation may make sense to us because

00:13:14

of the influence of Greek philosophy on

00:13:16

months but John is not starting with

00:13:19

separation John starts with face-to-face

00:13:21

this and the fact that we're included in

00:13:23

this in the beginning was the word and

00:13:25

the word is face to face with God and

00:13:27

the Word was God

00:13:28

all things came into being right your

00:13:31

name there right it I came into being in

00:13:34

Jesus I've never been separate from

00:13:37

Jesus

00:13:38

you haven't even neither has anybody

00:13:40

else now we're beginning to think like a

00:13:43

Christian now we're beginning to think

00:13:46

well maybe the problem here is not that

00:13:49

I'm no good maybe the problem is I have

00:13:51

no clue who I am maybe there's this

00:13:54

thing called darkness and maybe the

00:13:57

light is shining in the darkness and the

00:13:59

darkness doesn't understand it you see

00:14:03

how John's thinking relationship

00:14:06

face-to-face this other centric love

00:14:09

care not hierarchical relational Father

00:14:12

Son and Holy Spirit all things came into

00:14:14

being through this one and apart from

00:14:16

him nothing has come into being that has

00:14:17

come into being you will never go

00:14:19

anywhere on earth or even if you get in

00:14:21

a spaceship and go to the far corners of

00:14:23

the universe and meet anything that got

00:14:26

here and stays here in anyway a part

00:14:28

that did excuse me Jesus nothing all

00:14:32

things came into being through him in

00:14:37

him was life and that life was the light

00:14:40

of men light of humanity in him was life

00:14:45

now let me ask you a question based on

00:14:49

the first three verses of John's Gospel

00:14:51

what would you say is the light in the

00:14:58

beginning was the word son Jesus

00:15:01

face-to-face with the father in this

00:15:04

fellowship all things came into being

00:15:06

through him and apart from him nothing

00:15:08

came into being that has come into being

00:15:09

the light shines in the darkness and the

00:15:11

darkness doesn't understand what is the

00:15:13

light I'm gonna make you think with me

00:15:18

what is the light based on the first

00:15:21

three verses

00:15:26

is Jesus the light when you know we're

00:15:32

also say yeah Jesus like but isn't there

00:15:36

a little bit more to it than that which

00:15:39

Jesus which Jesus tell me about this

00:15:45

Jesus based on the first two verses of

00:15:47

John's Gospel is he alone he's in

00:15:52

relationship so the light is Jesus in

00:15:56

his relationship with his father and

00:15:58

what else

00:16:00

Holy Spirit and what else us so the

00:16:06

light of life is Jesus's relationship

00:16:08

with his father in the Holy Spirit and

00:16:09

our inclusion in him

00:16:11

well guess what the darkness is then the

00:16:21

darkness is the delusion that keeps you

00:16:25

from being able to see that this is the

00:16:27

the core of the universe the father-son

00:16:29

relationship and our inclusion in it is

00:16:31

the like anything that blinds us to this

00:16:34

reality is the darkness and what's

00:16:37

interesting in John he's telling us this

00:16:38

in the first four verses five verses and

00:16:41

what's interesting is he calls it the

00:16:43

darkness and I grew up hearing that

00:16:46

darkness is just the absence of light

00:16:49

it's not just the absence of light the

00:16:53

darkness does not understand now

00:16:57

whatever he means by the darkness it's

00:16:58

supposed to think it has the

00:17:01

intentionality one way of translating

00:17:04

that verse is the darkness not only does

00:17:06

it understand but it's not able to

00:17:09

overcome there is an aggression here

00:17:12

there is intent here so there's the

00:17:15

problem here's the truth here's the real

00:17:18

world everything is coming to being in

00:17:20

this relationship you have I have and

00:17:22

we've been lied to and deceived about

00:17:24

this relationship and about our identity

00:17:27

and when you are lied to you about who

00:17:29

you are who God is you don't see what is

00:17:31

you have to create something that you

00:17:33

can't see you with me and then you have

00:17:37

to defend it with a vengeance because

00:17:38

all that

00:17:39

think you have all the time all the time

00:17:44

you're sitting right here included in

00:17:48

this relationship create it in this

00:17:50

relationship the darkness is we can't

00:17:54

see who we are and so we treat create

00:17:56

something that we can't see and

00:17:58

wonderfully now wonderfully right across

00:18:00

this world right across the United

00:18:03

States wonderfully all these things that

00:18:05

we have created that we're calling

00:18:07

church and Kingdom and glorious life

00:18:09

these things have bored us to tears

00:18:11

because they're empty and now the Holy

00:18:13

Spirit's turning lights on the can it's

00:18:15

like oh my goodness me the darkness is

00:18:19

anything that blinds you and me from

00:18:22

this relationship

00:18:23

anything that blinds you and me from

00:18:25

seeing that this relationship is the

00:18:27

foundation and fundamental to everything

00:18:29

in the universe I don't care if it's

00:18:31

religious it doesn't matter

00:18:32

the darkness is anything that keeps us

00:18:34

from seeing this relationship and our

00:18:36

inclusion in it now how bizarre is that

00:18:39

how was our is it when you're looking on

00:18:42

2,000 years of Western Christian history

00:18:44

and we haven't been talking about this

00:18:46

relationship or what have we been

00:18:47

talking about we've been talking about

00:18:49

being separated from God and trying to

00:18:50

get back in building empires to prove to

00:18:55

everyone around us that our way is

00:18:57

working because God's blessing us well

00:19:05

we might as well gone and be embarrassed

00:19:07

now this is the truth now I want you to

00:19:12

see this verse 6 there was a man sent

00:19:17

out from the presence of God it's name

00:19:18

was John he was not the light because

00:19:21

this is the light and our inclusion in

00:19:23

it well if you want me to give you

00:19:25

another verse here is the light here's

00:19:28

the truth John 14:27 that day you will

00:19:32

know that I am in my father you're in me

00:19:35

and I'm in you that's the truth that

00:19:37

sets you free that's the light the

00:19:40

darkness is anything that blinds us to

00:19:41

those realities anything blinders to

00:19:44

that right there and John is setting up

00:19:47

his gospel and he's going to he's going

00:19:49

to pull the string and you're going to

00:19:51

get to see Jesus in a way

00:19:53

very few of us have to this point ever

00:19:55

gotten the chance to see the darkness is

00:19:59

anything that suppose John the Baptist

00:20:02

is sent out from the presence of God he

00:20:05

was not the light he was sent to bear

00:20:07

witness to the light because in this

00:20:09

world in this creation once Adam and Eve

00:20:13

were called into being once we were here

00:20:15

God the Father Son and Holy Spirit are

00:20:17

not going to do anything without our

00:20:18

participation because that would be to

00:20:20

pretend that we're not real and they

00:20:22

were not right here so he calls out who

00:20:25

will go this is Isaiah who will go who

00:20:28

can I sin who will go for us John the

00:20:29

Baptist says I'm in I'll go and I'll

00:20:32

bear witness to the light because the

00:20:36

darkness is so profound even when the

00:20:42

light is present it needs someone to

00:20:44

bear witness to it and then he says

00:20:47

listen there was the true light verse 9

00:20:55

which coming into the world enlightens

00:20:57

everyone he was in the world and the

00:21:01

world was made through him and the world

00:21:02

did not know him

00:21:04

where was the light where was this

00:21:08

relationship did you hear it I always

00:21:14

think if God is a spectator watching

00:21:16

from a distance it says here that he the

00:21:21

light the father's son the creator and

00:21:25

sustainer of all things is in the world

00:21:27

and although the world was made through

00:21:30

and in him the world did not know him

00:21:32

and in verse 11 he came to his own and

00:21:34

those who were his own received from not

00:21:37

you see verse 11 the receiving nots

00:21:40

getting a little bit closer to the

00:21:43

darkness did not overcome it there's

00:21:46

some kind of aggression that's going on

00:21:48

here that John does not spend a lot of

00:21:50

times as a philosophical theologian

00:21:53

trying to deal with the problem of evil

00:21:56

he wants us to see what's going on

00:21:57

because he's so excited about the genius

00:21:59

of God and how he goes about fixing it

00:22:02

so let me skip over to Chapter three

00:22:05

I want you to see this

00:22:07

and then we'll go to chapter 5 but for

00:22:10

God so loved the world that He gave His

00:22:12

only begotten Son that whoever believes

00:22:14

in Him should not perish but have

00:22:15

eternal life for God did not send the

00:22:17

Son into the world to judge the world

00:22:19

but that the world should be saved

00:22:21

through him he who believes in Him is

00:22:24

not judged he who does not believe has

00:22:26

been judged already because he has not

00:22:28

believed in the name of the only

00:22:29

begotten Son and this is the judgment

00:22:31

that the light has come into the world

00:22:35

and Men loved the darkness rather than

00:22:38

the light for everyone who does evil

00:22:40

hates the light and does not come to the

00:22:42

light lest his deeds be exposed now I

00:22:48

want to ask you a question is this the

00:22:53

conclusion of the story and this is the

00:22:57

judgment that the light has come into

00:22:58

the world and men love the darkness

00:23:00

rather than the light and were unwilling

00:23:02

to come to the light is this the end of

00:23:05

the story because I'm it's really

interesting how many sermons have you

00:23:09

heard Jesus laid down his life for you

00:23:11

and you're not willing you hate the

00:23:16

light unwilling to come to light this

all gets ratcheted up in John chapter

five and I want to read these verses and

pay attention listen carefully if you

want to know what happened in the fall

of Adam this is Jesus interpretation

what I'm about to read to you John 5 36

37 and following and the father who sent

me has borne witness to me you have

neither heard his voice at any time nor

00:23:45

seen his form and you do not have his

00:23:47

word abiding in your heart you searched

the Scriptures because you think that in

00:23:51

them you have eternal life and it is

00:23:53

these that bear witness of me and you

00:23:55

are unwilling to come to me that you may

00:23:57

have life I do not receive glory from

00:23:59

life from men but I know you that you do

00:24:02

not have the love of God in your heart

00:24:03

and I have come in my father's name and

00:24:06

you do not receive me how can you

00:24:10

believe when you receive glory from one

00:24:11

another and do not seek the glory that

00:24:14

comes from the one and true God you see

it's almost like Jesus is saying well I

came i'm delight i'm here and you didn't

want me dad

i lay down my life for him and you

00:24:36

vindicated me by resurrecting me in the

00:24:38

holy spirit but they didn't want me and

00:24:42

i'm like well maybe we need to retitle

this book it's not the gospel it's it's

00:24:47

how the light shined in the darkness and

00:24:49

the darkness did win in fact it just was

00:24:52

unwilling to come to the light you feel

00:24:55

that you feel it this is where we've

00:24:58

been stuck maybe maybe John is a as a

00:25:04

proto Calvinist and maybe what he's

00:25:07

doing here is he's telling Jesus is

00:25:09

saying guys there's two groups from all

00:25:11

eternity this group over here non-elect

00:25:14

not loved by my father never gonna be

00:25:16

loved I didn't come for them this group

00:25:18

over here elect loved by my father I've

00:25:20

come to them they are my sheep and my

00:25:22

sheep hear my voice sorry dudes you just

00:25:25

happen to be in the wrong group I'm just

00:25:28

giving you a heads up you have never

00:25:29

heard my father's voice you have never

00:25:33

seen his form ever you do not have his

00:25:35

word abiding in your heart you do not

have his love in you you with me
